  • standard jeep axles are chromoly micro alloy and very high quality. the two piece axle in the front isn't anything to do with the locker it essentially does the same thing as freewheeling hubs. disconnecting the axle stops the front diff and driveshaft turning on the street to save fuel it's called a centre axle disconnect it's not necessary and is only there to help the jeep pass fuel economy and emissions testing. when you're doing diff setup in future get the backlash and pattern correct with no preload then add the preload thickness to the shims. the "tech" on wrangler/gladiator is well known and easy to deal with. there's plenty of information and products out there to bypass, tune or calibrate it.

  • As a Jeep JK owner i totally understand his opinion. Pros to go for a Jeep: cheap, fun, capable and lots of engineered parts. In Toyota does not sell the 70 series. It has to be imported and therefore is so bloody expensive. Can not afford a Toyota and have to deal with the reliability issues of a Jeep 😂

  • If Rueben has no mechanical noise and you hate repairing Jeeps. Install DANA 60's and 70's with chrome moly axles.

  • I engaged my rear ARB air locker for the first time in about 3 yrs WELL NOT HAPPY JAN 🤔 It locked up as it should, Upon switching it OFF it Released the Air, Sounded like everything was ok 👌 Turns out that the centre Didn't Unlock, Only discovered this when trying to reverse out my driveway, Turned the wheel and noticed that the Rear was still locked.. Turned it on and off a few times Still locked.. Turned very slowly in reverse until a Horrible Noise was heard it sounded like a broken Axel.. Which Freed it up now I'm too scared to engage it again lmao 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 Lesson here is use it more often.

  • Tons and be done, F250 axles or something similar. Don't know what options you have there in Aus.

    @JackAFlint@JackAFlint4 ай бұрын
    • Options are limited as US HD trucks are not very common, so you won't find lots of cheap 60's at the wreckers (junkyards). He could probably import new Dana axle assemblies but they are very expensive.

  • If you don’t have Cast diff covers best get on that. The diff housing will flex under load especially with steep gears, just like it stretches with the diff spreader, and cause gear deflection. The factory covers flex and don’t provide enough support. Cast covers from ARB or Dana/Spicer will provide the needed support to prevent gear deflection .

  • Good call on the 4.88s and going to Dana gears. The 5.38s were never going to last with that configuration and Reuben’s driving style. 😉 I don’t want to tell you how to suck eggs, but the break in procedure for these gears is critical. Too much heat in the first 1000km turns them to glass. Also, go with mineral diff oil. For some reason aftermarket ring & pinions in these diffs show a higher failure rate with synthetic oil regardless of oil weight. No idea why! Can’t wait to see the rig out on the trails again!

    • @@johnhannonHannodon’t let this stop you. I’ve had 60,000 trouble free kilometres on mine, hitting heaps of hard tracks all over SEQ. I’m running 37s with 5.13 gears and no issues. I know plenty of others with similarly modified Gladiators that are NOT pavement princesses with no major issues. The issues Reuben has had with gears comes down to going with too deep gears for a supercharged engine, compounded by improper (no) break in before abusing them. These failures are NOT typical.

      @ozian79@ozian794 ай бұрын
    • @@johnhannonHanno they are great rigs, as mentioned the gear set brand was poorly chosen, and break in might not have been right. The other thing the Aussies need to understand is the 4:1 tcase combined with the gearing of the 8 speed auto puts ( something like 80-90:1 crawl ratio where a Land Cruiser or hilux will probably barely have 30:1) a lot more torque to the wheels, combined with the high weights the rigs are built to there, and the added strain of 37” tires means you need to realize you’ve got a recipe to break stuff. On 37’s the gladiator is highly capable. Way more so than any of the Toyota stuff.
