How Do Bees Sting? | Maddie Moate

One of the bee questions I get asked most is WHY do bees sting?! Honey bees rarely sting for any reason other than defence and needn't be anything to be scared of. So, I made a video and a DIY honey bee stinger to help me explain how and why they do it!
(This is a video about honey bee stings. Not all insect stingers are the same.)
Thank you to The Wildwood Trust in Kent for providing the perfect backdrop!

  • When the bee stung me, my hand was burning badly and I was in excruciating pain. My mother applied raw honey to my hand because she used Geohoney honey, and it worked and made me feel much better.

  • Hi Maddie, wouldn't it bee (had to) that the pressure of the stinger going into the skin, and pushing back on the sack with the venom in that actually causes the venom to squirt out? I only ask as how would the Bee know it had successfully pierced your skin? I believe that is how snakes squirt their venom by the fangs going in and then squeezing the the back of the fang to release the venom. Great video though as always

    @mulreay@mulreay4 жыл бұрын
    • You can see the muscles pulsing, pumping that venom. It maybe that upon being ripped from the the be there is an autonomous reaction.

      @9HighFlyer9@9HighFlyer94 жыл бұрын
  • The honeybee sting has 2 parts with barbs on, these slide backwards and forwards against each other pulling them into the skin. The venom sack releases the venom when it cools down, i.e. As soon as it comes out of the body of the bee the cooler air starts the muscles contracting and pumps out the venom. On a cold day the venom will get into you much quicker than on a warm day

  • Honeybees do not stop to ponder and ask themselves: "should I sting this thing??" , rather it is an inherit genetic trait to defend their colony. Also, honeybees do not always loose their stinger. Stingers are lost due to the thickness of the epidermis layer of our skin. Bees COULD die if they sting us humans, but they can sting other creatures multiple times without dying. Also, many times a bee sting wont go extremely deep. If you don't freak out and can tolerate the pain, watch the bee as it tries o free it'self. Often, the bee will move in spirals and "unscrew" themselves, which allows them to fly away to live another day 🐝☮️☯️

  • That "honeybees don't want to sting you" is bullcrap. They have no sense of self. They do what's required to ensure the survival of the hive. I've been stung by hornets, yellow jackets, honeybees, scorpions and bitten by a black widow. They all suck.

  • Great, positive video, as usual, Maddie. Didn't know barbs were called _barbs,_ though. ;) I've heard from _grownups,_ and reading Hergé's Tintin, The Castafiore Emerald as a kid (true :D), putting sugar on a sting, after removing the stinger, brings relief. Edit: Just thought to add that kids are really lucky to have your interesting, pedagogical and sunny videos.
