Developmental Red Flags Every Parent Should Know About
Developmental red flags are certain indicators that health professionals look for in order to identify potential developmental issues or problems that may need intervention. Identifying these developmental red flags early allows you to seek treatment early, which can significantly reduce the impact the issue has on their development, as well as reducing the amount of treatment required to correct it.
It’s very important to recognise that the presence of one or more developmental red flags does not necessarily mean your little one has a problem. If you do notice one or more of them, it’s simply an indication that you should seek out professional advice and have a professional assessment done to see if there is cause for concern.
In this video I’m going to walk you through red flags to keep an eye out for at 3 months old. Because you spend more time than anyone else with your little one, you are best placed to pick these up early. For that reason it’s extremely beneficial if you’re aware of the red flags because you’ll be able to notice them early and get them assessed if needed. That early assessment and treatment (if necessary) can result in much better outcomes as mentioned above.

You can't treat social disability which u called a red flag. It's actually ableist to socially disabled ppl. And it's also inaccurate and shows how you ppl can think ppl can't be socially disabled if they're not doing the typical social "taboos". You can't fix social development. Some ppl are just different and that's okay and saying stuff like make sure they're normal is horrible. You talk and talk and it's all ableism. Wishing baby to be normal and this is how u view disabled ppl.I wish you could grow up

My baby was born at 36 weeks. Not quite premature but 4 weeks early is actually noticable in her milestone development.. part of it is she still has a wobbly head at 4 months, cant support her neck much. Hearing that im supposed to measure her milestone based on the supposed age of birth instead of her real birth gives her a month setback and it makes so much more sense. Thank you

My daughter had a bit of a stiff neck (and shoulder), which did lead to a slight flat spot on her head, because she definitely prefered her head on one side - but we got her checked out and treated and it was resolved super quickly! :D Gross motor are still her "slowest" milestones but she's doing so well I'm glad the stiffness was treated early before it caused too much trouble!

She had one or two appointments to massage her neck and shoulders, then by the time she could turn by herself and be comfortable on her tummy it stopped being a problem! She’s 20 months old now and I don’t think about it anymore! She’s been walking since 16 months.
Hi. My daughter is having the same problem. She prefers her left side, lifting left shoulder more than the right, has a flat spot on the back of her head. She is 5 months old.
@@aditigaur2929 hi!! :) i strongly suggest mentioning it at her follow up! We had a couple of appointments with an osteopath, and it helped a lot! My daughter hasn’t had any more problems, though at 2.5 years old she still prefers books, drawing and building blocks than climbing and jumping around ;)
Great video. My baby suffered of torticolis. Luckily my husband noticed it and we went to therapy. It was incredible helpful and the flat head and reduced motor skills in one side were corrected. It is extremely helpful to know what to look in our baby.
Awesome work on picking up the torticollis early. It is often really easy to miss.
I know my baby had it and sleeping in the Bobby pillow I mean I was right there, I wasn't leaving her by herself in that pillow. It was able to straighten her out and helped correct the trying to go to one side. She seems so much more comfortable in it. A lot of baby massage, to help straighten those joints out. It's caused because when the baby's coming through the birth canal it's a lot of pressure going on. And they're all jammed up and their back hurts and their neck hurts and they just went through something very traumatic. Being pushed through the birth canal. Coconut oil and a few drops of lavender was all I used for massage and in those moments where she was just screaming and there was nothing I could do to comfort her it seemed the lavender coconut oil foot and leg massage made all the difference in the world. It would turn those moments of being on the brink of insanity to calm and peacefulness. We can't be going to the pediatrician every damn day we've got to do these things ourselves! But yes see your pediatrician. But this is something that you can help Comfort them and relieve their pain. A lot of babies that are just colicky probably have a bit of this

For anyone in the comments that is wondering what the last red flag could signal (in regards to difficulty feeding and poor latching/losing milk) they’re common signs of a lip or tongue tie! I strongly recommend that if you’re experiencing these signs along with they latch and unlatch frequently, have gas pains, difficulty sleeping on their back (prefer upright or stomach positions), snore, hiccup a ton throughout the day, arent gaining a lot of weight or seem to be labelled under “failure to thrive” or youre experiencing lots of nipple pain and vv frequent nursing sessions, to ask for a referral from the babys dr to get a consultation done. Most pediatricians/midwives/family drs are not trained in identifying ties and that can make life v difficult in their development bc it affects so much. I just got my daughters ties fixed and it has made a world of difference and shes gained so much more weight in just 2 weeks and is a lot less fussy. You know your baby better than anyone, like Emma said, youll see the signs. And dont let your babys dr dismiss or discourage you from addressing the issue! Remember that it does affect their health and a dentist that specializes in the practice can determine its severity with much more accuracy than the untrained eye! Much love 💕 Happy parenting (:

@@saggcornio9307 Of course! Theres three different methods which is cutting, cauterizing, and laser. Im pretty sure that laser is the most common method now due to the most effective healing outcome and the least amount of pain inflicted on baby. In my personal experience they had didnt allow me in the room w her bc traumatic experience for both baby and parent. But they explained that they swaddle the baby and put goggle over their eyes to protect them and do the procedure from that point. My dr explained that adults whom gotten the procedure describe the aftermath as a pizza burn

My son was born tongue tied but was operated on it the the day I gave birth to him but he's still displaying all these symptoms you mentioned and snores and breaths heavily I have been so worried that's why I started searching for child development videos and all online he was born in 36weeks and 2months now 😢
I actually suspected torticollis when my baby was 5 weeks thanks to your video. Her pedia totally missed it but eventually assessed it when I pointed it out and referred us to PT. Turns out she did have torticollis and positional plagiocephaly. Thank you for such informational videos!

My baby girl was born 40 weeks and we were in NICU for 4 days. Baby was born with her right wrist folded inwards and half body celebral palsy after her echo, ct scan, xray, scans everything else needed to know if she is ok everything came back normal, and it was ruled out that she just squashed half her body up when she was still in my womb..she followed the usual growth steps but we were very patient with her as she eventually gets there on her own timing, what ever the doctors told us that would happen to my little girl 7 months later she has proven so much apart from her wrist she has changed alot since day 1 and her wrist is slowly getting better... I am still giving her tmy time exercise as her neck is still abit wriggly.

As a caregiver it's frustrating when I share my concerns with the parents and suggest they ask the pediatrician. Either they ignore me, or the Dr. Says "let's wait and see" then later there are ALWAYS issues 😕

Hi Emma! Your videos are a life saver. My baby loses a lot of milk when feeding. I didn't realize it was something to be concerned about. I thought it was just normal baby mess. He loses about an ounce, from his 6 ounce feed. What can I do about that? What does that indicate? Thanks in advance.
Hi @Haya Shamsi so nice to hear your find these videos helpful. Losing milk could indicate a few things. It is always best to check in with a doctor or paediatric speech pathologist who specialises in feeding, because they can see you little one in person and give you specific strategies if your little one is having difficulty. It might be as simple as changing the flow of the teat if your little one is bottle feeding.

Gosh you had me frantically researching craniosynostosis. I’ve been looking at my baby’s head for a while. I think it’s a funny shape and the plates look quite uneven to me. It also somewhat retained the shape he was born with, that long alien like shape. But I’m not sure if that’s normal or not. He just turned 3 months.
Hi @J A I hope I didn't worry you too much. Your bub's head shape could be totally normal, but if you are concerned it is always a good idea to check in with a Paediatric Physical Therapist (AKA as physiotherapist) or your little one's doctor just to be sure. Hope everything works out to be fine❤️
The constantly turning their head to one side is how my mom figured out my sister had no hearing in one ear. Back then newborns weren't screened at birth but it could have also been caused by chicken pox she caught at 2 (chicken pox vaccine didn't exist then).
Thank you for this! my son is a preemie baby but he can almost do the things that a full term baby can do. He just can't open his palm fully with his thumb tho i'm trying to exercise him with grasping something colorful and interesting in his eyes ☺️. I tend to get nervous when watching videos like this but happily my son can almost do normally. He can turn his head and has head control. I'm training him to roll over and have a tummy time. Hi Emma, my son is 3 months old and he is stretching his body like an arch always while lying on his back. He is pushing his right leg towards down and stretching and moving his head back. Is it normal or should I consider this activity?
This is very helpful! My 3 month old baby enjoys following toys by turning his head but never turns his head all the way to either side for the toy. He loses interest once it's by his ear even if it rattles. But he can turn his head all the way to either side cause he does it in his bed all the time. I'll bring it up with his pediatrician to be on the safe side.

Work with the baby. You'll be surprised what they can learn. At 4 months I thought my baby was getting behind and I started working with her cuz I'm staying at home there with her anyway LOL! And it made all the difference in the world. She's now 8 months and surpassing all her milestones
My baby will be 8 weeks in about a week ish and having a hard time lifting and turning her head while lying flat on her tummy, but if I prop her up on a boppy, she can hold her head up for a little bit but won’t really turn it while it’s up, is this okay? How can I encourage lifting her head more while in tummy time on a flat mat? I use toys and my voice and she still won’t really pick her head up , she’ll turn it sometimes without lifting her head and she cries a lot .. any advice ?
Anything about 3 months old babies crying incessantly for no reason and rejecting milk in spite of being hungry? Pee is normal if not heavy diapers, poop is regular in colour, temperatures are normal and everything is fine... But goodness knows why she keeps freaking me out it's becoming unbearable with that incessant crying... I am trying everything that I can and I have no clue what helps. Thank you for this video. My baby is 9 weeks old and the nurse just noticed that he turns his head to one side only. The paediatrician missed it and I missed it. I thought it was sth normal as he doesn’t have perfect head control yet. But when I tried to move his head to the opposite side, he cried. We are going to have this checked asap. How to correct it and how long does it take? I do believe it was from the car seat as it doesn’t have very good head support.
My son was turning his head to one side due to how I was holding him during the day, and how we sleep at night. I changed how we sleep at night so his heas is turned the opposite way, and I started paying attention when I hold him or put him down for a nap to have his head turned sometimes one way, sometimes the other. It took 5 to 6 weeks until his body seemed balanced, and we are still working to correct him using one side of his body more than the other. Probably going to continue with massage and helping him use the other side more.

Hi Emma, Big fan of yours. I’m not sure if it’s a valid doubt but my baby’s head is not in proper shape it’s little outward on one side. He always had a preferred side until 3 months of age but now he is 7 months old and can move freely. We do regular check ups at paediatric and they never came up with it.

My grandson is 4 months today and had a Dr's visit. They said he is fine bc he is all smiles but he barely has control of his head and he won't hold it up at tummy time. If you sit him up and he has to hold his head up as much as he can he goes into like a daze and then falls asleep. He doesn't like for you to touch his head or behind his neck. I'm thinking something is wrong but I'm told I worry to much. I'm trying to find home therapy I can do with him to help him. He also has that one crease in his one hand that is straight across.
Hey Emma, you mentioned at the end of the video about babies spilling lots of milk when feeding, this is the fist time I’ve heard of it being a red flag, could you explain why and maybe some times to combat it? My 1 month old started doing this at about two weeks. I’ve discussed it with my midwife, plunket nurse and a lactation consultant and the only explanation I’ve gotten is that she’s doing something odd with her tongue but no one seems concerned because she is still putting on weight 🤦🏻♀️
Could be reflux. My pediatrician said as long as baby is gaining weight and having wet diapers they are most likely fine. Our daughter had issues with vomiting and spitting up and it turned out to be reflux. She’s so much better on medicine.
My 2-week old just started being a "happy spitter" too. Some feedings result in a little to a lot of spit-up, which seems to be related to a more horizontal nursing position and/or my position (strong letdown). I keep his head elevated to about 45 degrees for 15-30 minutes after a feed and lean him back for a few minutes before burping gently, both of which reduce the frequency and amount of spit-up.
My son will be 6 months old in 2 weeks. He has spit up really bad ever since he was born and the doctor just wrote it off his acid reflux but it should have stopped by now and he's still spitting up and now it's like actual thick vomit and his pediatrician just sucks so he scheduled for a new appointment with a new PCP but I'm glad I seen these comments because I always thought it seemed a little excessive for spit up.
@@katchastain4984 acid reflux does not necessarily stop by 6 months. I would go see a pediatric gastroenterologist.
Any signs of digression look at the vaccines. Children's toothpaste is also very very toxic. It has a lot of neurotoxins. Coconut oil and a little bit of baking soda is all I use on those little baby teeth coming in

At this age they don’t have a lot of control of there arms. If you are concerned I would just arrange an appointment with the doctor who can see your little one in person.
Our premature son came 6 weeks early, his corrected age has him at 3 weeks and he’s already able to fully lift Head and turn side to side during Tummy time. So far he’s an extra strong little guy. He was a massive baby, he was 6 weeks premature but was already 7lbs. He measured 99%> the entire pregnancy. The doctors estimated if he’d gone full term he’d of weighed 11lbs
My son came 6wks early too and was also able to lift and turn their heads. I think he’s pretty strong! But he was a tiny baby, born at 3.4lbs. He measured in the 1%percentile. I’d like to think 6 weeker’s are something special

What could be the reason for a baby to not show hunger? My baby only had hunger cues in the first 6 weeks. After that I fed her every 1,5-2 hours during the day when I thought she must be hungry but without her showing any signs. Now she ist 3 months old and only breastfeeds right after waking up. If I am too late by just 10 minutes she won’t breastfeed anymore. This came suddenly. And at first i didn’t know why she would feed. That day she refused to feed almost all day long but never cried although she must have been hungry. Then I figured that she only feeds directly after waking up. That’s what we are doing know. She feeds very well. But I am wondering why she wouldn’t show hunger if she didn’t feed for 4+ hours

@@maryjoydeguzman1785 hi! I think around 4,5-5 months it changed to her feeding when hungry no matter if just woken up, tired or anywhere in between. The change came quite suddenly. She is 6 months old now and I breastfeed around every hour when awake. Usually she starts whining when hungry, bored or tired and then I always try breastfeeding first. When tired, she will nurse to sleep, if she isn’t hungry she pushed herself away. Everything is much easier now :)

Hi, I'm a newborn mom and also a single mom so it's a little hard to take care of little one bms. I noticed for a month now (he's 3.5month-old) that he has 1 eye in brown and the other seems a little gray (all of members from both families have brown eyes) so Idk of it's normal or not.

This can cause your baby’s breast tissue to become enlarged, which may cause what is medically called galactorrhea once they are born. It typically goes away around 2 months old.

Our LO used to look in 1 direction.. we noticed in every pic. But we worked with her in turning and such and she is fine now :)
My baby is 2.5 months old and we just realized he always looks to one side. Even during tummy time! Been trying to encourage him to look the opposite way more often. Thankfully I'm able to get him to sleep on the opposite side all night now. Do you know about how long it took to correct your baby from favoring one side?
What about not bearing weight on the leg at 6months??
Hi. My bub is 4month 8 days old. She has started grabbing her feet. However does it more with her left hand. With her right hand, she can reach upto her knees or ankle max. Often she keeps her right hand fisted as well. Also she can scratch her head with her left hand but never does it with her right. She can bring the head uo though. Also when she grabs toys with her right hand, she twists her arms so that the underside of her arms faces upwards while with left hand she often grabs normally. What is this? Should i be worried? She has good head control
Hi! My 2 month old does the same thing. He's constantly holding his right hand out to look at it, but never looks at his left.. Did you ever get answers as to why your lo was doing that? Did it correct itself?
Hello! Any updates on this? My 3mo uses mostly his left hand.
When my son did this, I worked to correct the imbalance in the 2 sides of his body. Massage, paying alof of attention to which way his head was turned when I hold him and when he sleeps. And I held up his other foot so he could see it and try to grab it. I put his other hand on the foot and he grabbed it. After a week or 2 he was grabbing the foot himself, and even not grabbing the first one....
So my baby’s head shake every time he sleeps. And he is only 2 weeks. Is that normal??

Did she get vccinated? Maybe she was brain injured by the toxic substances (aluminum, mercury, formaldehyde, etc) in them? Or maybe she can't hear you?
Omgoodness my daughter just turned 3 months she is premature. I had her 34weeks6days. She doesn’t enjoy tummy time & her head still wobbles when I sit her up or on tummy time. This past week I’ve freaking out that she’s going to be stiff & not be able to hold her head up. She does prefer left side but I’ve been correcting her posture for about 3 days now that I noticed. I wish I can send you a video of her during tummy time so you can see exactly how she’s doing 😭 I see her pediatrician in February & I just cannot wait 😭

Your daughter is 4 months now? How is it going? I had my 2 month old at 36 weeks and I freak out and worry a lot, but I do the best I can and learn as I go. If no one has told you lately, YOURE DOING GREAT!❤️

Hi Shirlette it really depends on the level of flatness. I would recommend you pop into the doctor who can see your little one in person and have a look at the flat spot and give you advice. Hope that helps!

Hi @J J it sounds like you have a lot of concerns about your little one. I would recommend popping into the doctor to discuss these concerns, particularly if the worms were in your little one's poop. I hope they can answer your questions.
My baby born at 38 weeks 4 days of gestation at 2.9kg wt which decreased to 2.6 during hospital discharge. Now she is almost 4months and 12 days of birth age. Her weight is less than the other babies of her birth age. Every medical reports are normal. But some of my relatives make me worried about her weight gain. Is her weight increment is normal
Hi i am writing because my baby is of the same age and about the same birth weight. She was 2.75 at birth. After discharge it was 2.6. She lost even more due to jaundice. However now she is 4 months 8 days old. And her weight is 5.3 kg. Which according to doc is great and he asked me to stop bottle feeding since she ought to double her by weight by 6 months but she already did that by 3 months 15 days.They calculate weight gain by birth weight so babies born healthy will def gain more weight over time. As for me i was top feeding which was unnecessary and i got scolded for it. My breast milk would hv sufficed. Now i have a question. My baby has recently started grabbing her feet. She does it often and quickly with her left hand and feet but not so often with her right hand. Infact she cant touch her feet with her right hand yet. She just stops at her knees or ankles at the most. Sometimes she keeps her right hand fisted as well. Is it normal?

My 11 week old looks in one direction even when sitting on my lap but she can easily move her head when laying down in both directions, not when sitting on my lap. Her head control is also poor, she hates tummy time. She was born at 36w 6d would I adjust her age? Not sure if that’s considered premature

11 weeks is too early for head control. Wait for another month. She might have gained partial head by now. Wait for another 2 months for complete head control.
Hi Emma, my son is now five months and seems fine but is struggling with tummy time. He seems to always default to the “skydiving position” unless I place his hands under him, he quickly goes back to skydiving position and cries. An hour of tummy time a day seems like a far-off dream at the moment. He tends to launch his face at things mouth-first rather than grabbing with his hands, and his arms are often stiff behind him when I pick him up rather than holding onto me for support. He is fine everywhere else with none of the flags mentioned here or elsewhere. Is this anything to worry about?

I got my daughter to start rolling over as a game. Like I got her to notice how far she got away from me when she I pushed her and kind of rolled her like a little log LOL. And after a couple of times like a few days of repetition she started rolling on her own. That was how I got her going it was trying to make her laugh trying to make a game they see the frustration or worry in you it passes on to them

It depends. If she is putting on weight then it is ok. But is she makes a clicking noise, continues to loose a lot of milk and fusses at the breast during a feed then it’s best to check in with the feeding consultant.

Hi! My baby is 4 months old today. She luckily doesn't have any of these red flags but there is one I am wondering about! She does prefer turning her head to one side, but she can easily turn her head the other way when tracking a toy or when adjusting herself while sleeping. Should I still be concerned?

My youngest has formula go out the side of her mouth and it appears to be 1/4 of an 4oz bottle but her doctor isn’t concerned. She just turned 4 months old.
Its great you have mentioned it to the doctor. If you are concerned you can always seek a second opinion or ask your doctor why they are not concerned. For example if she is putting on weight and generally happy then that might be why it isn’t concerning.
That explains why I’m so fucked up, 2 late now oh well.
