JAWS really set the bar high for shark movies back in 1975, and THE MEG tries to bring the shark genre into a new generation. It does this by basically having Jason Statham fight a 70 foot long prehistoric Megalodon shark in hand-to-hand combat. With a description like that, how did this movie manage to drop the ball? Why did the whole basis of his character make no sense? How did he “see” a giant shark BEFORE it was set free from the Mariana Trench? Why don’t we get to see a shark for like 45 minutes of the movie? Why does it feel like a high budget version of Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus or Sharknado? To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to THE MEG. It’s super easy, barely an inconvenience.
