It is hard to find manual transmissions without electronic door locks anymore if at all. I do still insist on cruise control and will take an automatic if required but spare me the expensive to replace key fob.

  • The most expensive car I ever bought was $12k, so a new vehicle running at only $10k sounds like a dream. And even if it's fuel economy is lower than the standard, it would still be leagues better than my run down Xterra. If this comes to market, even at a couple thousand more than this, I'm still stoked.

    • I'm not sure about the US, but here in Europe we have had these kind of trucks since ages, they're built by Iveco, Ford, Renault... The cabin is standard but the back is modular, and they all have a body on frame design, instead of the car-like unibody of most American pick up trucks. The thigh is though, they are commercial vehicles, they pay lower (or no) taxes compared to a "civilian" vehicle and are only bought by people who use them to work (also because they usually cost more than a car).

  • It makes perfect sense! When Toyota 1st introduced their pickups to the US, they were solid and inexpensive. My parents bought one and we used to take it up into the mountains, the real mountains above 7,500 ft elevation, & would go where the big 4X4s couldn't go. In fact, one time dad pulled out a big 3/4T 4X4 out of Boulder Cr., Blaine Co., Idaho when all others couldn't. Loved that 'Yota. And the new Land Cruiser is nothing like the original. The original was fun, strong, and simple. Bring back modernized FJ Land Cruisers & Toyota pickups as they were originally. They will sell! I'd buy one.

    • Guy I used to work with had an ancient Toyota pickup. He had to put a quart of oil in it every night before he started home. "That doesn't sound like a Toyota to me." "Well, when you have 500k on the original engine, even Toyotas burn oil." He and his buddies put new rings in it over a long weekend. No more smoke or burning oil. I had a 1981 Toyota Corrola 2 door sedan. 5 speed and rear-wheel drive, so it was sort of a sports car. Bought it for $400. It had been sitting in a field for two years. I turned the key on, and there was still juice (Interstate brand battery.) So I poured a little gas in the carburetor, tried the key- and it started. Took it straight for an oil change. The mechanic pulled the drain plug- and nothing came out. He ran a screwdriver up through the hole, and what came out- even with a warm engine- looked like tar mixed with mollasses. Amazing the original owner got over 200k out of it without doing regular oil changes. Burned a tiny bit of oil, but I just ran 20W50 in it during warm weather and it was very happy. Tried to beat it to death for over two years, drove it hard and fast, offroad, even used it to fight grass fires (me, another firefighter, and two backpack tanks.) Only reason I quit driving it is because my buddy's station wagon the same year lost an engine. They were flat broke, so I gave them my car for the engine. They drove it for years afterwards. I bet it had 500k on it in the end.

  • Is the customizational back end of the truck already added when you’re buying the truck and just a box you have to check for what you want from the factory or is that something else you have to buy? I’m already interested in buying one now because it’s cheap and customization that makes me want a couple of them. Something for work and then a small home in the back I can just camp out in for long work days or to actually take a vacation in.

    • @@senatorjosephmccarthy2720 It doesn't. EPA sets fuel efficiency requirements based on gross vehicle weight. As the weight goes down, the required efficiency goes up - fast. If you make a truck like the f-150, it only needs to get something like 20 mpg to make the line. If you tried to make a 1985 Datsun pickup today it would have to get something like 60 mpg, which the automakers basically can't do. This is probably stuck this way until electric vehicles become practical at that size, which I suspect is the goal. The problem is a little more complex than that because the EPA grades the entire lineup of a manufacturer's vehicles, but that's the gist of it.

      @evilrobots@evilrobots3 ай бұрын
  • I love it. Not electric and it's customizable! The only problem I can see for this is " not sold in USA" where the truck market is BS we don't have any small trucks. We're talking about men who were everything from fishermen and farmers to fire fighters. Were great for carrying gear and equipment, towing utility trailers and even packing us kids around in those little extended cabs. Even carried small campers that we would go up to the lake with every summer for weeks of fun in the woods. I would use the remainder of the the bed, to put an enclosed unit, to transfer my dogs. They go pretty much everywhere with me. They could be safe, secure in the rear unit. And not messing the interior cab up. I really like this modular concept. Surprised it hasnt been available sooner. No one should pay $50K or more for a SUV, Truck or Car. That's just crazy.
