LYRICS
What's my problem?
Well, I want you to follow me down to the bottom,
Underneath the insane asylum,
Keep your wits about you while you got ‘em,
‘Cause your wits are first to go while you're problem-solving.
And my problem?
We glorify those even more when they..
My opinion, our culture can treat a loss,
Like it’s a win and right before we turn on them,
We give them the highest of praise,
And hang their banner from a ceiling,
Communicating, further engraving,
An earlier grave is an optional way.
No.
Neon gravestones try to call for my bones.
What's my problem?
Don't get it twisted.
It's with the people we praise who may have assisted,
I could use the streams and extra conversations,
I could give up, and boost up my reputation,
I could go out with a bang, they would know my name,
They would host and post a celebration.
My opinion will not be lenient,
My opinion, it's real convenient,
Our words are loud, but now I'm talking action,
We don't get enough love? Well, they get a fraction.
They say "How could he go if he's got everything?"
I'll mourn for a kid, but won't cry for a king.
Promise me this,
If I lose to myself,
You won’t mourn a day,
And you'll move onto someone else.
But they won’t get them. No they won’t get them.
Don’t get me wrong, the rise in awareness,
Is beating a stigma that no longer scares us,
But for sake of discussion, in spirit of fairness,
Could we give this some room for a new point of view?
And could it be true that some could be tempted,
To use this mistake as a form of aggression,
A form of succession, a form of a weapon,
Thinking “I’ll teach them,” well, I’m refusing the lesson,
It won’t resonate in our minds.
I’m not disrespecting what was left behind,
Just pleading that it does not get glorified,
Maybe we swap out what it is that we hold so high.
Find your grandparents or someone of age,
Pay some respects for the path that they paved,
To life they were dedicated.
Now that should be celebrated.

    • Growing up, Linkin Park was one of the first bands I became a fan of. There were even times when I would listen to nothing but LP. During the pandemic, I truly became a fan of Soundgarden as well, whose lead singer was the guy that Chester looked up to, Chris Cornell. And to think that almost 8 years after becoming a fan of Linkin Park, I’m here listening to twenty one pilots, who is pretty much the forefront of a newer generation of musicians who have the same messages that LP AND Soundgarden had. Sometimes, things come full circle, huh🥲 RIP Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell🙏🏼

    • @@blurryfacetm3616 @Brayden Swope Eh i think this song sticks out a bit from their other songs. I think it'd be actually really silly to say that a lot of other twenty one pilots are as blunt as this song. I mean, the last two TOP albums are literally built around metaphors. Some of their songs that deal with suicide the most use extensive metaphors, like Trapdoor, Migraine, HLTY, etc. I'm not gonna act like this song doesn't beat around the bush at points or make use of figurative language, but this song is still extremely blunt compared to other TOP songs. And that's a good thing.

  • The last verse is probably the most important; it is talking about how so many TOP fans glorify Josh and Tyler and not the lyrics/message: "maybe we swap out what it is that we hold so high" It is not about Tyler or Josh being gods of a culture, it's about living above the culture and bettering ourselves. The boys are just human like us; they never wanted to be worshiped and it's about time that we started taking their real message to heart... love yourself, not us.

  • He sounds PISSED in this, and I totally get it. He had a great chance to talk about this issue so directly, and he took it. I love that he cares enough to take the time and tell everyone that doing something so horrid and drastic of a decision is not the way out. This song doesn't feel like a song or rap. It feels like a speech or a discussion. It sounds like he sat down with a piece of paper and a pencil, wrote down every thought he was having on this issue, and spoke. It's so raw and almost vulnerable because it sounds like it was meant to be a poem rather than a song. It's almost as if he sat each of us down with him at a table and gave us a window to see into the truth.

Lately I been seeing a lot people glorying some mental disorders and younger generations using suicide as a joke when it should not be and I think that's what Tyler says here we are not scare of the stigma of mental health anymore so maybe is has become easier to glorify certain mental illness.

My grandmother died this summer and she was such a good example of someone who thrived even in the hardest of times (she lived the spanish civil war as a kid on the loser band, the republicans... she cared for all her brothers and her parents when they were really old). She was such a strong and wise woman... She was there when I was depressed too, always motivating and caring for my well being.I really miss her. (Sorry for my english, guys!)

  • On the other unpopular things to talk about are the unhealthy and bad uses of suicide. Well, the common instances are escape from pain but most of us seem to ignore that some use it to gain attention, or to threaten, or to gain something - which causes manipulation upon other people. And thats what Tyler warns other people not to use suicide for people to glorify and to romanticize.. it is never right. Rather, Tyler tells us, instead, to celebrate life as it happens and the way the elders paved the way for us and gave us lessons from their experiences. However, we often neglect our elderly and leave them alone in homes of the aged which deprives them of love and care... and that us what is also missing from us. Rather than giving love to those are still alive, we give them to those who are already lost.

I had been put on medication in august. The year before was the worst year of my life and I was still recovering. I just couldn’t do it anymore. That’s what I remember thinking. I wasn’t exactly stable on medication yet and I think that’s what made me go haywire. I took a handful of melatonin and wrote a Suicide note. I luckily survived, but I know some may not have been so lucky. This experience has put Suicide in a new light for me. I no longer see it as a solution, rather something that should never be considered. I never want anyone to make my same mistake. Remember to stay alive. ||-//

Was embarrassed and Grandpa said "I used to sing in the mirror too" to make her feel better) needless to say, once looked at like that mom stopped being a jurk. It's the same expression and emotion involved in the music, along with narcissism, (lol) it's just expressed on a slightly different platform. If we didn't have mirrors or Camera phones kids would sing along to music while looking in puddles or lakes.

  • “Promise me this, if I lose to myself, you won’t mourn a day and you’ll move onto someone else” this line was always hard for me to hear because of the way it was “twisted” in my mind for a while it was associated with someone who told me that all the time. It always meant to ignore the person and pretend they never were even here. When I was finally able to listen to this song all the way through, I realized what he meant. There’s a mic drop at the end of this song every time I listen to it.

    • When I was around your age, I never thought I could make it to 23. I was convinced I'd end my life by then because I was so miserable and in so much pain, the thought of living much longer with it seemed exhausting and impossible. I'm 32 now. I have two kids who are my everything. I have a husband who is also my best friend. I thank God every single day that I didn't give into that fear. I won't lie and say my life is completely better; I still have plenty of pain. But I now see the other side of it, I've gained perspective, and have reasons to be grateful to be alive. Life is a series of ups and downs. The ups make me so glad to be here still, and during the downs, hold on to those ups until the next one comes. I promise you; it will come.

  • The ending is so POWERFUL and I applaud Tyler for making this statement! The shows like 13 reasons why and other forms of “raising awareness for suicide” isn’t equating to prevention of it. It always paints this picture that the people around you didn’t try hard enough to save you so you should use suicide as a weapon against them. It’s toxic and it’s not helping in a society where we joke about wanting to die 24/7. Instead of glorifying death we need to put the focus back on how beautiful and worth it is to stay alive. |-/

    • You could interpretate the same message into "13 reasons why" though. Yes, it shows a person using suicide as a weapon but that person isnt the main character. The show mainly revolves around Clay dealing with the suicide->getting hit by that weapon.

"Promise me this: if I lose to myself..." verse was the first thought that flashed through my mind as I woke up today. now I believe that maybe I feel alone, but this song will come along with me. it will help me to get over all the endless pain and proudly carry my scars as a sign of my strength. thank you for saving my life, once again. |-/
