No one expected to see this inside!!! : Woodturning Black Locust
Black locust has a wonderful party trick which we exploit in this video giving some of the most amazing woodturning you will see this year. We turn the bowl using a UV light and the effect is stunning.

Thanks Joe and I hope I never grow up 😂
Man! I miss the 60's! The best time of my life growing up in the 60's. Will you make a lamp out of the Black Locust and put a black light bulb in the lamp? I'd Love to see that, and would want one.
Thanks, I was born in 69 so missed the good bits lol. A lamp sounds like a great idea 😄
@MikeHolton The 70's were great too!😉
@@AGRIV8TD1963 Haha 😀 yes they were
I recently cut down a beautiful Black Locust tree…… Two foot in diameter, solid all the way through……. I was so happy to get all of that beautiful wood……. I kept every piece of that log❤
One of the coolest woodturning videos I've ever watched. ❤
Thanks so much, it's about time I finished these off 😀
The glow under the UV light is unbelievable
It really is, not sure if you have seen it but I just finished this bowl off on a recent video. 😀
So glad to see this beautiful lathe turning……… I believe this video will put this beautiful wood on the map……….. Seeing this video will put everything about Black Locust into perspective ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks Patrick 😀
I like the combination of that glowing yellow/green with the deep purple under the black light. Who knew Mother Nature loved a good rave? 😂
Hahahaha 😂 thanks for that, 😄 Mike
I love how you always explain and then find new ways to do things. I'd never heard of Black Locust, but it was very cool! Nature never fails to amaze. Thanks so much!
I do my best to keep things interesting, thanks Mike 😀
Those shavings in a clear resin bowl would be INSANE!!! Thank you for the wonderful video and super satisfying black light turning!! Take care and much love from Colorado!!
Thanks so much and that is a great idea 😀
That’s a pretty neat idea! I have black locust shavings all over my floor and they light up like crazy when shining a UV light on them.
I love that you “teach” as you go. You make such informative and engaging content that people just relax and watch, whether they too are turners or not. I am not but love sharing your creative journey throughout each video. You make the lay person like me, really understand the love of what you do. A very rare gift. You create little treasures, and you Mike are one of life’s little treasures. You have the natural ability to give love to all who watch. Thank you. ❤
Thanks so much 😊 you say the nicest things
Very Cool Mike! I really enjoyed this video.
Thanks Robbie 😀
I'm just now getting into wood carving. I have loads of black locust on my property and never knew this. Thank you!
You are welcome, have fun and watch your fingers 😀
I love black locust, they grow fast with good rot resistance, bees love them, they make some nice acacia honey, and the wood grain is beautiful.
Hi, I had no idea acacia honey was a thing but there it is, lots available in the UK.
I never knew that black locus was like that. Learn something new everyday.
You do indeed, thanks Barry 😊
"GLOVE!!!!"...... Hi Mike, I'm late to the party as usual but I REALLY LOVE that wood!! Can't wait to see you finish those bowls off I know you'll do them proud 😊. Can't wait for my notification to go off for the first look at your new workshop..... not going to be late for that 👍. Maddie.
Thanks Maddie, hope you enjoy it 😀
Spinny, glowy wood?! If you add dance music, I think you may just crack that elusive teen girl wood-turner demographic! Very coo Mike!
Haha thanks Tom, not sure that demographic exists but lets give it a go. 😀
Brilliant project! The fluorescent ring for safety under the UV was a nice choice.
Haha thanks! All the best, MIke
By the way..... I'm still binge watching all your episodes.... Maddie.
Thanks Maddie 😀
Black Locust....Stygian...the best!
It is such nice wood 😀
Thank you so much for this fascinating video. I have never heard of this wood before. How wonderful to learn and see. Wonderful.
Glad you enjoyed it Rachel, it's pretty amazing stuff 😀
Fascinating! I never knew wood could be fluorescent.
A lot do it but this species is as good as it gets 😁
Excited to see the finished product. The grain looks amazing! Thumbs up
Thanks Melvin, a couple more months then it should be ok 😀
I had no idea that black locust or any wood was luminescent…very cool!
It's pretty amazing stuff! All the best, Mike
Those shavings might make truly awesome resin project!
A few people have mentioned this Linda, I'll have to come up with an idea how to use them.
Nature is full of surprises. Whatj a fun video to watch, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it, all the best, Mike
❤❤Nature❤❤. Beautiful bowls....I'm looking forward to the next step❤
Me too! Audie, it may take a little longer to get them dry enough 😀
Very interesting, I never knew that black locust had fluorescent properties in the grain. Nice project Mike.
Thanks so much, it is a very cool wood 😀
Hey Mark, I’m 72 years old so I am a child of the 60’s. I had every black light poster out and a 3 foot black light. We would smoke that weed and trip out in my bedroom.
Haha thanks 😀
I had a piece of that wood. I don't remember what I made, and I don't remember who I gave it to. It was a wow ago. I heard about this wood glowing like this maybe a year ago. I don't know know who to tell that they can have extra fun. Haha. Thanks for sharing. See you next time
@@albertdawson6814 see you next time Albert 😃
I'm 60 & I remember those cool black lights. My older brothers would smoke their stuff listening to the best of the 60"s Rock & Roll. By the way, I bet those wood chips would make an excellent addition to anyones landscape at night with black lights strategically placed. Refresh with new chips as needed.
Blessings, from an old man in Tennessee. Great content and cool and amazing artwork.
Thank you kindly David, all the best. Mike
i never new you could get fluorescent wood. it just shows you how incredible nature is
I know! There are about 70 different types that do it but this is the best 😃
I use uv glow chemicals to color and glow up glass. Natural fluorescence is totally new to me. This is so cool. And I looked on eBay and there's good amounts of green and dry pieces a plenty. Might have to gift a wood worker some
@@joshschneider9766 Cool, I would love to have a go at glassblowing one day, such an amazing skill. I got mine from ebay from this seller, very good and very fast delivery www.ebay.co.uk/usr/goodwoods_uk I have bought so much from him we have become friends lol
That fluorescence is so cool!
I know, it's way better than I thought it would be 😄
Coolest thing I’ve ever seen. Back in the 70’s you could of became a billionaire. They made lots of money with the posters.
Haha thanks Rex
I love Robinia/ Black locust and it is my favourite wood to turn especially as I was given a whole tree with numerous burrs. Great idea to turn under UV light. Cool effect. Thanks for the video. Lathingabout
Thanks so much my friend, this was my first time turning it and I love it, all the best, Mike
Interesting video. Was unaware there were woods like this. The UV light made it very interesting. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it, all the best, Mike
Very neat video! Who would have thought to turn under Black Light!
Thanks Jason, I had to buy three different UV lamps before I found one strong enough to be able to turn under so a costly experiment 😂
@MikeHolton well worth it!
I think these bowls should get a glowing review. 😉
10/10 for the pun 😂😅😂
That was actually quite beautiful recording with just the black light on.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😀
I thoroughly enjoy watching your process and decision making!
Thanks Mary, glad you enjoyed it 😀
I've lived most of my life with black locust trees and love them for their shade and character, but never knew they fluoresced.
I know, it's not really what you expect a tree to do lol 😂
The Honey Locust also glows ❤
Indeed, they are very similar 😀
I had no idea wood could be fluorescent, fascinating!
There are over 70 species that fluoresces 😊
Wow, i learn so much about wood from you. Thank you!!
Happy to hear that Donna, I do try to be useful 😀
You’ve brought us into a new era; Disco-turning!! Nature keeps amazing us, just like you Mike!! I wonder if the wood will still be fluorescent when it’s completely dry?
Thanks Peter 😁, I'm pretty sure it will be although I have been wrong before 🤣
Well...every day is a school day! My coffee went cold because i watched twice...WOW!
Haha sorry about that Chris 😂
😮YOU MEAN THATS A NATURAL GLOWING AND NOT A PAINT SOAKED INTO THE GRAIN OF THIS WOOD ???? THATS INCREDIBLE GORGEOUS
Nope that is the natural quality of black locust wood, there are over 70 other species that have some florescence but this is the most.
@@MikeHolton WOWWWW I NEVER KNEW THAT THATS SO AMAZING I LOVE WHAT YOU CREATE HAVE A BLESSED WONDERFUL PEACEFUL EPIC DAY TODAY FULL OF LOVE HAPPINESS AND ADVENTURES KIDDO
@@VeneraBerens Thanks so much Venera, I hope you have a wonderful day too 😄
Amazing ! Can’t wait to see the follow-up video.
Me too it will take a few months to dry but hopefully it will be worth the wait.
Never seen wood glow… that is awesome
I know Kennedy it is just mind blowing 😀
The black light thing is very interesting.
Thanks, glad you liked it 😀
Some 50 years ago, my Dad and I were cutting Black Locust for the fireplace and found a worm track in our cut in the shape of an M. He was named Merlyn and I'm Michael and we both went by Mike.
Wow that was some work by the worm! I hear Black Locust burns very well.
Look forward to see those when they’re finally done.
Me too Mick 😁
Man I want a guitar made from that wood that is so cool!!!
Must admit, that would look pretty epic!
What an unusual wood.... fascinating..... nice pair of bowls Mike......
Thanks Steve, can't wait to finish these off 😀
I watch a lot of turning videos as I’ve just started with turning wood . You videos are by far the most interesting for me .
Thanks Simon, best of luck with your turning and if you have any questions then just ask. Mike
As always a great insightful video. I’m learning so much about woods I’ve not heard about before.
You're welcome, it's nearly time to finish these off 😃
Another fascinating video !!! I never knew wood had a glow to it !! I used to work in a nuclear power generation plant in Maryland, USA. I was always fascinated by THAT glow as well. Really cool stuff Mike !!
Cheers Bill 😀
So interesting! When I was a kid back in the late fifties we peeled black locust for fence posts here in Kentucky. They lasted for ever. They are so abundant but I knew nothing of this property!
Well now you do, it is a great wood for posts, it just lasts so long!
Very interesting. I didn’t know black locust was fluorescent. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Brenda, it is just about the most fluorescent of all the woods.
I have never seen wood fluoresce before! That's really cool!
Thanks, nature is so amazing 😁
@@MikeHolton It really is! Thanks for sharing your creative talents!
@@rapturesrevenge you're welcome ☺
Hi, I am a novice wood turner I love your videos it is all ways a inspiration. I af from suny South Africa, Port Elizabeth. Thanks for the awesome idea I do have a lot of wet wood and hard wood. So i will be giving it a go
You are welcome David, have fun 😀
First her slow cooker is in the workshop then her kitchen scales and now the sun lamp from the bedroom... the sacrifices Mrs Mike makes so that we can be entertained and amazed. The fluorescent yellow was extraordinary. Thanks Mike for sharing your seemingly bottomless knowledge and experience with us. Do you have a big space and a system for keeping track of all these drying blanks and part turned projects etc?
Haha I do have a system, I find space for them on a shelf and hope I remember what it was when I find them again 😀.
never knew black locust fluoresces. very cool. If you are ever in the desert looking for florescent rocks at night, if it's orange and moves, its a scorpion!
Haha good to know but not many deserts in the UK 😀
wooo hoooo!!!!18.1K!!!!!!!!! and the wood doing this is fascinating - thank you so much for sharing. looking forward to seeing how the other bowls are doing. cheers!
Thanks so much Dee, the others should be ready in a few weeks 😁
Hmmm I can’t wait to see the final product. Thanks Mike
Another couple of months then I'll be turning 😀
How flippin amazing is nature! And so brilliant that you turned the bowls under UV light...like a firework display!!!❤
Haha thanks, I can't wait to finish them, may play rave music next time to match the lights 😄
This was such a fun video to watch! Hopefully it wasn't too hard working by blacklight
It was not too bad once I got used to it, all the best, Mike
I’m fascinated with the fluorescent woods as well. Staghorn sumac is one of my favorite grain patterns and colors… too bad it doesn’t grow any larger than it does
I've heard of it but never had the opportunity to turn any.
@@MikeHolton check it out. It is beautiful wood but doesn’t get very big. The largest I have ever seen is about 6” in diameter and that was huge for my area (southeastern USA).
@@joker747A I have after your message I've been hunting around for information 😊
Hi Mike, How COOL is this??!!!! Fluorescent wood. Who new? I am amazed. If I owned such a piece I would need to get used to living in the semi-darkness as I would like to see it under the Black light to enjoy the beauty of the wood. Remarkable, truly remarkable. Cheers, Bill Riley
Haha thanks Bill, it is pretty amazing, can't wait to finish these off, all the best, Mike
This might be your most visually striking video thus far. Beautifully done all the way through. Also, your verbal explanations as you proceed are excellent, which is why I watch your videos more than any other bowl turner on KZhead. Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much Patrick, I just try to be myself and have fun. I initially had dreams of this becoming my full time job but I don't want it to become something I have to do, I just want it to stay something I want to do if that makes sense?
Black locust is my wonder wood. I have no idea why here in North America it’s not more commonly known and used. My friend has a deck that’s over 30 years old and it’s still sound timber. I love it for all my green wood working handles. It’s the most harvest firewood on my property. The fact it grows so fast and has all of its other qualities just amazing me
This is my first time turning it and I love it. Luckily I have managed to buy a lot more so I'm sure I'll be having a lot more fun in the future. All the best, Mike
nature is weird and wild. thanks for revealing this
You're welcome Sara, this was a whole lot of fun!
Thanks for sharing something that most us did not know. I cant wait to see the finished bowls in a few months.
Thanks Bryce 😊
I’m about to copy your eyeball project using this wood. Love the videos!
Have fun Matt and let me know how you get on 😃
Amazing effect under the UV light. Just shows you what nature has got to offer us in different ways. Thanks again for a bit more education on wood. Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it Peter, all the best, Mike
Fascinating! Will have to talk to my arborist friend and ask him to keep an eye out for me.
Please do! It's great stuff to turn.
Amazing tree and information that I never knew....
Glad you liked it, all the best, Mike 😀
thumbs up for the wedding ring protection... have to admit while binging your older videos i was constantly a little bit nervous abou it :-)
Thanks, the protector works well, I was getting fed up of being nagged (quite correctly) about it lol
coolest ever.... looked like you were turning green slime with the chips flying off. Very impressed, now I WANT some black locust wood.
Haha, luckily it's fairly easy to get hold of 😂
Mike it's a shame that you have to wait a long time to finish these two beautiful pieces. Thanks. sharing sharing.
It is Tom but it is far better than having to wait 4-5 years to start 😀
loved the Radioactive shaving very cool piece and video
Thank you kindly!😁
That is absolutely cool! It looked like sparks coming off.
Thanks Mary, it was cool to see them coming straight at you when you were turning 😊
Never knew wood would glow under a black light.
There are about 70 species that will do it but this is the king 😀

Great vid, loved the slow mo
Haha thanks Gary, just a bit of fun at the end 😀
The end grain is gorgeous, especially when contrasted with the lower fluorescence of the sapwood
Haha I know, I did not expect that 😊

Fascinating - looking forward to seeing these in 4 or so months 😊
Me too I can't wait to finish them off 😊
Just picked up four big chunks of Black Locust that was recently (2 days ago) cut down. I was going to let it sit for a few months before I turned it but you’ve convinced me to rough turn it sooner rather than later. Looks like I have a weekend in the shed ahead of me! Lol.
Excellent, have fun! It's better to part turn it now before it get's too hard 😀
Love Locust wood
Me too, I can't wait to finish these off.
I love the smell of black locust! I cut up a downed tree while visiting family in Massachusetts and flat rate mailed some bowl blanks and little slabs to my house in AK. So far I’ve made a small bowl and a letter opener. While letting the wood dry in my garage it oxidized to a vibrant green on the surface. first I thought it was mold but after carving through it I realized it was the wood itself turning color. Have you ever seen that?
Not with mine, it's more yellow than green 😀
You can't beat a nice bit of fluorescence in wood! Fantastic work Mike, great video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks Tim, this was a whole lot of fun 😊
Isn't nature simply amazing Mike. That was incredible to see. Can't wait until it's ready to finish turning. Have a super evening 🙂
Thanks, you too Fiona. Nature never ceases to amaze me, there was a TV show on recently about a UK species of scorpion that fluoresced the same as this wood!
@@MikeHolton 😳 think I'm happier watching you turn wood lol No, I would be interested in seeing that. Will try to find it. Thanks
I had no idea there were fluorescent woods. Quite cool.
Apparently there are over 70 species of wood that does this 😀
I get Tim Burton vibes from this when you're turning! i.e. The scene at Oogie Boogie's place in The Nightmare Before Christmas, or the blacklight scenes in Beetlejuice. Very cool!
You are so right, I love those films, corps bride is still my favourite.
Well, Sir, apart from the really cool quality of being fluorescent, Black Locust is also resistant to borer. I have been told that it is possible to cut the tree, shape a post, and put it in the ground the same day. Very useful!
Hi Stephanie, I have heard the same, it is very resistant to rot! Do that with willow and you will probably have a new tree in a few months 😀
That's cool as hell!
Haha thanks Michael 😃
