Bambu Lab X1 Carbon: What NOBODY Is Talking About...

Soo... it finally happened. Bambu Lab, after seeing my evil plan video, decided that they wanted me to experience their flagship product firsthand, and they generously sent me an X1 Carbon Combo 3D Printer... Which most would say is the absolute BEST 3D Printer of 2023. They only had ONE condition: Despite the fact that I generally don't like to say negative things on my channel, and I prefer to share my feedback as constructive rather than outwardly critical, they absolutely insisted that I give my raw, unfiltered feedback both about them and their product.
Well, I've been playing around with the Bambu Lab X1-Carbon Combo for a little while now, and I have to say, there have been some surprises. I thought that I would know everything that there is to know about this printer, and yet there were a lot of things that really did surprise me. Things that I couldn't believe nobody is talking about... (Or, at least, nobody was talking about when I recorded it...but there are SO many videos coming out about Bambu Lab and the X1 Carbon, that some other great content creators beat me to it!)
And in this video, I'm going to share them with all of you. Who knows? Maybe even those of you who own a Bambu Lab product like this didn't notice these things. Let's find out.

This looks like a wrong shutter speed.. like 1/16 or something like that. :) See the hands. Thay have lot of motion blur. :)
I guess your camera might have tried compensating for less light, or there was a slight mismatch in capturing frequency that didn't scale naturally to the video's frequency, or anything else ofc 😅🙃

If you reduce multiplier under "Flushing volumes" from 1.0 to 0.3, it works just as well, you just save a lot of plastic.

The thing they don't tell you: customer service is horrible if you aren't an influencer. I've had one for months and it's literally been a brick taking up space and wasting my time fixing it, troubleshooting and repairing. I'm going to give them one more chance and if it doesn't work, I'm going to recreate the office space printer scene.
You should upload a video talking about your experience and showing all the problems with your Bambu Lab 3D printer.
I saw a video by the 3d professor where he kinda covered this . It's an interesting video to watch.
What level were you using it for? Selling a bunch or just normal home use? There is a difference.

It’s really impressive to me that they are investing hard into getting critical reviews. Much more impressive than paying out for everyone to put out suspiciously positive reviews at the same time like others do.
DEFINITELY. Agreed.
Based on what I've seen, they have been taking feedback to better improve their system, such as the AMS issues that Maker's Muse had.
Research and development is usually the second most expensive part of creating a product right after marketing. If they can outsource a good part of it to dozens or even hundreds of 3d printing experts with an incredibly large pool of experience, needs and usecases, it worth every penny of printers handed out for testing or they might lose on a bad review. Their product becomes better and will be prepared for the real life needs of real life users. It's good for them and good for their customers.
The best “raw, unfiltered” comment will be that it is a Chinese company and their products are made by underpaid workers, working many hours a day. It is also a company in a oppressive country where EVERY company is required to give the government all the information they have on their users. So having to register an app based in China is per definition a bit suspect.
Thanks, this is a great video of the X1C. Having mine since end of December, I can tell that it’s a really great machine and ecosystem. One often overlooked feature of the AMS is the automatic capability of switching to a new spool when you finishes one. Having two spools of the same material in it will ensure that your print will complete without any manual intervention! No more trying to figure out if you have enough filament to do a print…. Genius!

@@rightsdontcomewithpermits7073 I don't know how to use that feature, but the ams will pause your print when it runs out of a spool. So it doesn't fail :)

It does work for me every time; in the AMS two spools setup with same material and same colour and it perfectly detect end of one and switch to the new one. You have to set check the AMS auto switch filament in the AMS Settings. I've done it now four times with PETG in gray, black and translucent. Are you on the latest firmware on both AMS and X1C? if so, and it does not work for you, you might want to contact support. Take care.
@@robdel99 so you have to use same color? Bl told me that it is only needs to be same type of filament next in the row. I guess I'll try to impute same color on ams. Bl is very responsive in their response but not helpful most of the time.
I ordered a P1P in January. Worked flawless and so fast. I ended up buying an X1C with ams a couple weeks ago. And it prints perfectly too. Amazing printers. I used glue on the first print on the cool plate, haven’t needed it since. I use it as a tool for prototyping and prints are dimensionally accurate within a few thousandths using PLA. I don’t have time to tweak and adjust stuff and this printer delivers.
You are paying $700 + $1500 to print PLA!!!!??? Dude, with a little tweaking, you can do the exact same thing on an old Ender 3!!! I put my Ender in a a heated tent, did all kinds of upgrades, didn’t pay anywhere near $700, even after all of that, and can print ANY 3D printing material perfectly!!!
@@slipspectrum9253 you are either new to 3D printing or like to tweak/adjust settings constantly depending on media. I’ve been doing this years and multiple printers. Printing isn’t my hobby, I need parts fast and right the first time. I’ll pay 3x if my parts are perfect every time. What is your time worth?
@@slipspectrum9253I don’t think you understand. The ender, is likely slower, needs upgrades, and probably not as reliable. It would likely cost him more money in the end to run an Ender vs running the Bambu . Let’s say you make $100/hr. And I make $25/hr. And we need our car fixed. And the mechanic charges $50/hr. For me it’s cheaper if I DIY, but for you it’s cheaper to keep working and pay the mechanic. In the end, I would ridicule you, saying you could have saved money, but I just didn’t understand that you made way more than the mechanic and would actually lose money.
That "Walled garden" is the one thing I fear in the near future. We already saw a first gen wave of "We gotta stop the physical piracy" back during the first generation hobbyist printers. We saw it again when the "printable object for ejecting plastic at a high speed" (not sure where youtube puts that, so I'm not gonna use exact terms here) was released, and I guarantee we'll see it again when access to systems that wall off options become the mainstream. The thing is, each time before we've had the advantage of simply... ignoring it. Custom parts are relatively easy to make, and there are things like Printables, Thangs, and Thing-a-verse. And they all use a single, accessible format, STL. STLs aren't encrypted, they aren't licensed, and if a slicer accepts an STL, you can put in *anything*. But with this walled garden approach, it takes a single update to simply... take that all away. Perhaps they move to requiring using their own model site, where they can take down anything they want. Or they start requiring a license for each part. The thing is, all that will fail... for now. And that's because we can quickly and easily just jump back to something like the Prusa line. But if proprietary "walled garden" printers knock out existing market forces, if Prusa, Ender ,and the like are made obsolete, then so goes our defense against this walled apocalypse. So does this mean I recommend boycotting Bambo Labs? No... not really. If it fits your system perfectly, then it fits. But I keep seeing this touted as the "Prusa Killer" and the like. Don't make this a fight. Don't put it on a pedestal to supersede Prusa. When we do that, we spell our own doom. It's a great example of a well integrated system, and *certainly* good for market pressure. But if we encourage people to belittle Prusa, and throw these more open systems away, we throw away any hope of clawing back when these companies (and *many* other companies who would rather license a part than let you make it yourself,) decide to push out the rest of the open systems. ADDITIONAL (as I finished the video I noticed this): that RFID spool sensing is scary. On an open system where the choices and firmware are up to me, that's an amazing feature. And if all it was ever used for was to help automate filament types *when present*, that would be a good feature. But combine that with the above walled garden, and am no longer comfy with this feature, because it would take a flip of a switch to turn this "feature" into a blockade. I guess the point in all this is, if your focus is exclusively using parts that you bought from a company to print, then none of this matters. But if you use it to make your own things, this wave of walled garden printers should be scary, and you should *not* be considering an exclusive focus on such printers. You're just begging to be thrown under the bus. Instead, make the market work for us. Let's take what we learn from these new systems, and try and open them up. The filament loader is amazing, and I'm certain we can learn a thing or two from it. Prusa, if your out there, it's time for a MMU MK3. The rest of you, I think the Voron 3 has a new level to stand up to. Lets keep the 3d printer revolution open. Make Bambo a tool, but don't let it turn you into one at the same time.
There are a couple of things that come to my mind reading your post, which does bring up valid points to watch. First is the walled garden. The printers are popular now and garnering a lot of good press. However I think that perhaps Bambu labs created the walled garden to protect themselves being a startup company. Both the x1 and the p1p do things that most other printers don’t. I’m guessing that in the future you would be able to use other slicers with the Bambu labs printers, because once the other manufacturers start to catch up Bambu labs advantage would diminish assuming the other manufacturers retain open source mentality, which there isn’t any reason to assume they won’t. Also limiting what a person does with a printer would be a mistake as well, nothing would stop you from just reverting to older printers and slicers. I think the thing to focus on now is what everyone else does over the next year. Every other printer manufacturer now will have to do something to compete with Bambu labs, especially assuming they continue to improve user experience and costs stay relatively where they are at. If they start to move away from open source then I would start to worry more about some of the issues you’ve brought up. If anything the printers from Bambu labs are a wake-up call to the other manufacturers. The features, speed and cost of the Bambu labs products should concern the other manufacturers, and if they want to remain relevant they will have to improve their products. Truth is over the last several years FDM printing has stagnated with a few outliers introducing better printers. Though it does seem costs have come down some on many printers they are lacking in real advancement. Most of the real innovation has come from people that tinker and tweek and upgrade their own printers. And while that is commendable it makes the hobby unattractive and out of reach of many consumers. I wouldn’t say Bambu labs products are the pinnacle or the best, however they seem to be a decent product that meets a desired want from many hobbyist and that’s fast printing and decent quality.
You forget though that china DGAF about western laws and diversity bs so you won't have your chinese 3d printer not able to print 'the moustache man they lied about' or something like that.
So... You actually *can't* use any slicer other than their own, right? I see they've now mostly-open-sourced their slicer (which is a PrusaSlicer fork...), but there's still parts of it that are not open-source and I wonder if those are the parts that deal with things like the RFID scanner etc. The Walled Garden thing really is a worry. I, for one, will be sticking with open software as much as I can...
Repetier Host had a live printer UI with Solidoodle 10+ years ago. It would track machine motion in 3 dime signs (way beyond octoprint in 2d), with a full suite of control for speed, temps, temp monitoring, z axis offsets, etc. That said, 10 years of casual printing under my belt. Tons of Creality machines, a couple Prusa, and now an X1C, and I am BLOWN away. This is the future. Coming from an engineering and manufacturing background, I don't even know how Bambu is making money with this product at this price. Absolutely blown away and would purchase 10/10. It's still 3d printing and still has some 3d printing quirks, but light years ahead of Prusa and everyone else....
Love your content, just wanted to throw out there that I am up for and really do like content that is "as long as it needs to be" targeting 8 min or 20 min isn't as useful to me as getting all the info in one or two places clearly. Thanks, this is helpful. People have told me to split my videos at 15 mins, so I've been doing that, and I love it, because it takes the pressure off of me... I can write as long as I want and say everything I need to say, but my editor and I can also see our wives and children ;) So, I'll keep the multi-parts coming.
@@thenextlayer Some people have short attention spans, most prefer that they not have to watch 3 or 5 videos to get the information. If I have to keep coming back for additional videos on the same topic or product, I tend to not come back at all. You don't unreasonably stretch videos out just to get more ads in or go off on long rambling tangents so a longer video now and then is fine with most people.
I use a CR10 S4 and I love the fact I can print large chest pieces for cosplay. This would be great for helmets and other smaller items. I do love how it has an excellent finish to it. I hope people can enjoy this printer!!!!
Nice overview! Looking forward to your next video. Regarding them not including their PEI plate: it might have to do with its difficulty to work with the lidar. I dunno if 3rd party pei sheets have the same problem since they seem to be mostly goldcoloured. One thing that has affected me and lots of other people: the main controller board fan has bad bearings or were overheated from factory it makes a LOT of noise unless thwacked. Bambu sends out replacements easy enough though.

Great video… I’ve fallen in love with the filament cutter and now always having clean spools ready to be reused. Also… 🤯🤯 why didn’t I think of loading up the ams with my 4 most used filaments and just choosing from them when slicing when not multi color printing 🤘

That's actually the reason why I'm pondering getting a second AMS. One for laziness loaded with the most used filaments, and one for more special stuff :D

I have been watching 3d printing videos since 2015 before i got my prusa in 2016. I can tell you put a lot of thought and work into your videos, and as a KZheadr on a travel channel, i appreciate the effort you put in. You are great on camera, i can tell you work from a script because you are so precise and concise on what you say, which I appreciate getting the best info in the shortest period of time. If you continue to put this kind of effort into your videos, i know you will be challenging some of the biggest 3d printing channels within a year. I have only watched 2 videos at this point, both X1 videos, but I subbed and looking forward to more great content. Larry

I have been running one for 7 months commercially 8-10 hrs a day. Awesome machine! I can get prints as good with my finely tuned Enders, but with 10X the effort and 10X slower. Now I have a hard time going back home to my 4 personally owned Ender hobby machines.

One of the best 'newb' friendly reviews on the net. If not the best. You explain all the critical stuff especially for someone like me who is used to running 5, big 3 and 7 axis dual turret lathes with automated production. This is the closest 3d printer to the auto loading 50mm lathe we have.

Long time Prusa MK3s user here, been waiting for the XL for over a year and now Josef is saying at least another 6 months so am starting to explore alternatives. You video was informative however I get the feeling you glossed over some rough patches so as to not sound too negative. Any chance to get a bullet by bullet breakdown of things that work great and are differentiators from the competition versus stuff that works but requires a lot of effort and support versus stuff that just doesn't work at all? I'm encouraged by the feedback that BL is responsive to issues but my experience attempting to assemble and use the MMU on Prusa (twice- ordered the kit twice in hopes of an improvement) makes me worry what "aw crap's" await a new BL buyer?
I just ordered an X1C, after returning my K1 to microcenter; i had heard about the carboard filament spool issue, and was lamenting because i have a lot of them and was getting ready to find a good respooler gizmo... I had no idea there were RAILS and one for every brand on printable! wow! thank you so much!!
Thanks for the info, much appreciated. Have you ever used a makerbot method? Do you have any kind of comparison for print quality and ease of use for the built in slicer compared to the Makerbot Method? Speed, swaps, size, and price all seem to be much better than the Makerbot. Considering selling my Method Carbon to get one of these..... worth it?? Also curious, did they fix the large amount of waste between filament swaps or do you still have to adjust that manually?
I finally broke down and ordered one last night. I've owned a Crealty CR-10S for several years now. While I enjoy 3D printing, the CONSTANT tinkering with settings, bed leveling (even with the BLTouch) and endless Marlin firmware updates suck a lot of joy out of just PRINTING!!! When we buy normal paper printers, do we have to "tinker" with them to keep them working? No! I'm glad SOMEONE (Bambu) finally "got it" and delivered a "set it and forget it" type 3D printer, even if it's more expensive than a Crealty. It's a price I'll happily pay since I too, would like to send a print job to the printer and sit back and watch TV, knowing the job will be correctly printed (and MUCH faster to boot!). Subscribed!
I like your idea of choosing a textured plate at checkout. I think they didn't include the textured plate on the X1 because it messes with the lidar. Since the P1P doesn't have lidar, the textured plate isn't an issue.
Yeah, textured plate will make a lot of noise for lidar scan.
using 99% of the time the textured plate and have no issue with the lidar.
As they say in the textured PEI plate product page, the texture itself will create problems to the lidar when trying to read the print surface and do calibrations, that's why is not included.

I make lots of production parts where the first layer is the face and needs to be perfect. I've only been able to achieve this with a hilbert curve on a textured bed, tuned precisely. When the part is the faceplate for a monitor, you're going to see any imperfections. This incompatibility would render the machine useless to me. I'm kind of surprised that isn't a huge deal to everyone.
Bambu slicer isn’t actually the only one that integrates multi machine controls into the slicer, Flashforge has been doing it for years. 6:45

Outstanding video with very constructive feedback for Bambu Lab. They are innovative and paying attention. I knew I was taking a risk buying a Kickstarter printer, didn’t expect it to be perfect, but it has easily exceeded my expectations and is only getting better as they listen and responsively update their firmware and software.

This is a great video. I've had a X1C with 2 AMS for a month and love it. If you're reading this and on the fence, don't be. For me, the X1C truly brings the joy back to printing.
I definitely am on the fence at the moment simply because I saw an issue on servicing the heat bed cable from another KZheadr. I contacted Bambu Support to see if they addressed the issue and they ignored my question the first time. When I asked them again they simply said yes. Which made me skeptical. My only concern is having to service this printer - have you had any issues with the heat bed cable failing ?

definately agree its a bit weird not having the textured plate im looking at getting into 3d printing again after selling my machine years ago, id definately like this optiono along with recording cameras and lighting my concern with the app and such is what happens if they go bust/sellout and shutdown? can we still have access without them shutting us out? the thing stopping me from buying either machine is unfortunately working area size, i would have thought by now a 300-350 bed would be the norm
So many of these convenience features sounds familiar to me since my first printer is a CEL RBX01 I bought on a Black Friday whim. Tight software integration (automaker), auto-calibration, flawless filament loading, etc. It's a shame that 1) COVID seems to have permanently ruined their supply chain of custom parts and 2) they didn't invest in R&D of new printers to keep up with the latest developments and demand for a larger build area. They had a very affordable turnkey solution for people who just want to print and not geek out on every minute setting and adjustment, but it looks like they've gone under and it's going to be quite a shock when I trade-up to a different brand printer.
I was hoping from your video title that you would cover some stuff not seen in other machines/slicers. One that comes to mind is the fact that you can select a texture pattern for the top and bottom layers. This works really well, especially for the top layer. Bottom layer pattern does show up, but not as prononunced (assuming you are not using a textured plate).
2:50 I believe you're wrong about the reason for the Cool Plate, in fact I think it's quite the opposite: Bambu Lab knew full well that most people would print PLA. But they wanted to make an enclosed printer for the advanced materials. So they needed to have a build surface which sticks at very low temperatures (keeping the chamber temperature low to prevent jams due to premature softening of PLA). That's why the Cool Plate is included with the (enclosed) X1 and not with the (open frame) P1P.
I've been struggling to find the correct settings for silk on this machine. I want that ultimate shine while still being able to print at a decent speed. Would you mind sharing a basic setting profile for silk pla and pla+? I'm currently using Sunlu silk pla+ if that makes a difference.
I have a MK3S+ that I have put shy of 4K hours on, we have a raised 3D unit, along with the new Flashforge Pro 3 at work. I don't really care for either of those 2 work units, My Prusa has run circles around them. This looks pretty promising I need a larger printer for home use. Once I can see some solid reviews hit on the Prusa XL I am going to decide what my next unit is.
I agree with you on many points. I was surprised in many ways when I bought it, even though I saw a lot of videos. However, I was very surprised at how much was never addressed in the videos. The main point, Bambulab the loading and unloading you mentioned... it's a massive improvement but still, Bambulab still sees it too much as a multi color print and not enough as a storage system, at least I found a setting that allows AMS to switch to the same material when one runs out. It was a big surprise how little was taken into account to use the AMS as Storage system - since I'm more used to the industrial standard. I didn't even occur to me that that wasn't taken into account of a storage system. There's still so much potential..... The other is the texture plate - First layer check is switched off by textured plate... well they work on a soluten and still not reason and no reason not to buy it. But playing around with glue really doesn't occur to me. Well they will fix, I`m sure but there was many unknow suprisses for me. I won't make any videos there, I've been a KZhead partner for 12 years, I think the old videos are enough.

I just got my Ankermake M5 printer, and I absolutely love this printer. Ive been printing nonstop for a couple days. I can't wait for their color engine module which allows you to print multiple colors at once.
How well does this printer do single wall prints? So a vase mode single wall print? I print rc airplanes. The wall is single line on just about everything. And lightweight pla is the most common used in rc planes. Does this printer work with this filament?
My main question about investing in this is how bad the vendor lock-in is going to be. My current printer is a CR-10s but it is a frankenprinter with all the mods and aftermarket parts and improvements over many years. But it's long in the tooth now. Good for prototyping with PLA at this point and that's it, even if I used to print ABS and PET-G almost exclusively. I don't want to only be able to buy uber-expensive proprietary parts or be limited. This is the decision point for me between an X1 Carbon and a Voron 2.4.
Hi! Just want to tell you that alot of Cardboard spools is no issue at all in this printer. There is alot of different brands and cardboards out there and many of them are working great. Ive used a ton of'em :)
is this printer a good size printbed? i have a 200*200mm bed now wich is on the edge of being too small, and was wondering if the bambulab is decent?

This was a great video. Thank you. One thing I would love to know is if the heat bed cable issue has been resolved. I saw KZheadr Modbot ‘s review and he mentioned that there was a known issue that takes the removal of 40 screws and over two hours to service just to replace the heat bed cable - I own 4 MK3 units and they have been working flawlessly for years with normal maintenance and are so easy to service. Did you have any issues with the heat bed cable failing? I contacted Bambu support and they only replied with generic responses - the first time I asked them they didn’t even address my question then when I pointed out that they did not answer my question they just responded with it simple yes. I have no reason to be skeptical but it just did not sit well with me and this is the one thing that is preventing me from buying this printer at this time. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Great Vid, one of the things I ran into was that Overture cardboard spools have been working perfectly in my AMS system. The printed plastic rings fit but make them too wide to move.
Raise3D does a similar integrated suite with their printers through Ideamaker! Love having all (most of) the controls right in Ideamaker vs having to go to a browser.

Nice review video on the X1 carbon. You touched one single thing that is quite new to many other reviews I’ve heard. But it’s quite understanding why other reviewers left it out. But with any new designed mechanics going into 3D printers these days; such as the lidar sensors and smarter computing power there is certainly going to throw a curve ball on a user that was fixed on another configuration; ie the user interface etc. I have been around 3D printers, since their infancy way back from 1999, and used some earlier models from way back then for jewelry fabrication and machine parts.
All they have to do is add two cameras to eval the color of the filament pre and post nozzle during purge to stop purging at the right time or give the user a way to extrude manually and Calc esteps for purge setting. Then enter that value, its not that hard to figure it out.
I can guarantee you when they started shipping the Carbon, they could not get the current textured plate to play well with the lidar setup, I assume they had to develop the dark textured plate to correct this issue, as I have already tried to develop lidar and infra red level systems, and the "gold" coloured texture plates diffused the light and it cause all sorts of issues.
12:12 Would be also useful if 3D printers had a sort of deposit (for each type filaments) that made the wasted filament reusable, similar to old waxing machines.
yea bambu should sell a little filament recycler so you can put all the waste in to make new filament
@@WhimsyCottage it would take years for that to pay for itself, and even then the colours will just be an inconsistent mix of brown and grey
@@justinc2633 it's not really about paying for itself but being able to recycle any leftovers and failed projects into new ones. Also it depends on your printer how easy it will be to separate the different colors.

@@WhimsyCottage IF you have no thought process sure. You may want to spend thousands of dollars to recycle some filament but at the end of the day it is cheaper to throw it away and buy new. Filament making machines are expensive as hell for what you are talking about. You don't even have room for them unless you have a shop lol.
Really good review. I really like how you take a practical look at how you use it and really nice feedback to bambu Labs on what has "room for improvement". That Bambu Labs are listening so much at the community feedback does however take me yet another step towards buying one - even with low WAF. 😉 All that said - for the follow-up - could you please clear up the need for a internet-connection when printing? Have just heard rumours and brief mentions. Obviously the app will not work off-LAN - but will the rest work within the LAN? Also, have they made any construction updates on the AMS? Early AMS seem to have had problems with easely crack/break during shipping. My extended reflection about the texture-issue. Strange that the X1c comes with the cold-plate that (now) is only intended for PLA - if the printer is focused on printing things like ABS, ASA etc. - and that PEI hotplate have been sold-out for quite some time now. 😞 Again, excellent review - look forward to the follow up and have subscribed! 👍 Cheers!

As for video production, consider using c-stands and ATEM Mini Pro ISO. I use my permanent video setup everyday for conference calls, then content on the weekend. Always works, always.
You've successfully convinced me I don't want one before halfway through the video. The last thing I want is to be confined to a specific "ecosystem" - Seems like they are taking a page from the Apple book to keep their customers captive. Comparing it to IT, the vast majority of non-technologists can navigate and operate the apple systems, but the vast majority of Apple end users are unable to operate easily in other systems. We can all be impressed at what it can do, while being restricted to what they dictate. As a lifelong tech, I simply don't understand why the concept isn't resoundingly rejected.
Overall I loved the review. You've actually convinced me to purchase the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon Combo. The only thing that bothered me a bit was you comparing the Bambu Lab X1 with an MK3s+ for "automatic filament loading" ( 10:40 ) when you know there is a MMU2s available. I just didn't think it was a fair comparison. I don't know how many printers you have available, but it would've been better (imo) to compare that annoyance to another printer that didn't have the option/possibility to automatically change filament for you. Anyway, keep up the good work & good content!
From what I’ve heard, the mmu2 is horrendously bad, the voron ercf is decent. And AMS is the best by far
@@Aikano9 He's talking about the "automatic loading". You don't have to pull out and push in the filament, you don't have to cut the filament. You also don't have to push some knobs to pre-heat the filament. All these things are taken care of by the MMU2s flawlessly. What I think you're referring to is the actual multicolored printing which can have its issues if not calibrated well.
Bambu created a experienced comparable to a 2D printer. You simply send a file choose a couple of settings and that´s it. This truly is amazing.
I'd like to hear more about the quality of prints as the print speeds increase, which is a major selling point of the X1 Carbon.
I laughed out loud when you mentioned having all those little filament strands kicking around the office. Oh my gosh, they're everywhere ! And robot vacuums do not like them. Thanks for sharing your information and experiences. I should have my Bambu Lab X1 Carbon Combo in a couple of days. My Prusa MK3 with the MMU has served me well, and long overdue for a major overhaul and upgrade. It sat unused for almost 4 years, and has been moved around a lot. When I finally dusted it off and fired it up. I was shocked that it printed the first try, with no adjustments. And with very old, soggy PLA no less. I have too many hobbies (lazy), and decided to get the X1.
Great video - Ummm - I am having a love / hate relationship with my CX1 at the moment. Let's just put it that way for now. (mostly concerning consistency in print quality and adhesion issues when NOTHING HAS CHANGED in the settings on repeat prints) - I have not had ANY problems with my PRUSA MK3s over the past 4 years. So was going into this purchase with certain expectations. So far I have had a hotend assembly JST connector break when changing the hotend - and many failed first layer prints. I started using the engineering plate with PLA and bed temp of 65 and so far so good. (though they tell you that the engineering plate is not for PLA) - also I don't like the fact that I can't adjust the z-index live or in the machine settings like every other printer I have used. Adjusting the z I think would fix the adhesion issues I am having at times. Thanks for the video.

I'm glad it shipped with the cool build plate, I would not have tried it out unless it shipped with it and I am sure now that I use that almost exclusively I'm saving a lot in electricity by not wasting all that energy heating the build plate. I have bought dual sided PEI Bambu build plate as well as after market PET and PEO build plates with designs left in the bottom of your print that looks like carbon fiber or diamond pattern.
Being closed source is a deal breaker for me and it goes against everything the 3D printing community has been built upon. Who's to say the software still works in 10 years or they still sell spares when stuff starts to break and your very expensive printer then becomes useless.
thats the same thing for me! i remember purchase a Zymatic brewing machine from Kickstarter... then they had a few years of success and boom.. they are out of business and the machines stopped working!! very expensive brewing machine useless... ;( Open sources is a must, with a large community. Hopefully the open source guys step up game to match this. that is what I will wait for.
I own a broken Creality Ender 3 Pro FDM printer. I could fix it, but I also know that it's horribly out of date with the release of Bambu Lab X1 Carbon and similar manufacturers giant leaps, so I've really been considering whether I should fix my Ender 3 Pro and just run with that, or if I should get a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon first and then fix my Ender 3 Pro later, giving it some much needed upgrades in the process, but I've had my doubts about how trustworthy they were, since they've really just stepped on to the scene and overnight caused a major leap forwards and massive recommendations from the vast majority of all content creators, right after having a successful kickstarter campaign. Tbh, it sounds like a recipe for disaster, but after watching this video and hearing that they're patching any problems at the same speed as their printers can print, I now know I will save up for the X1 Carbon. Great video and congratulations on getting hold of the X1 Carbon. Yeah it’s not perfect. No 3d printer is. They all have their quirks. But it does do a fabulous job in short time. And although the poop is quite a bit when you visualise it if you weigh it up you’ll find it’s not a massive amount. I’m saving all the poop so I can melt it down and reuse it for another project.
Same, trying ti separate it out by materials. But yeah. This thing is freaking awesome.

I love my Bambu X1! I just started printing and modeling in November ‘22. It has helped me get better at 3D modeling because I can quickly see the results!

There is information I’ve not seen in other reviews, so thank you. And overall I’ve not heard anything really negative, and many of those things could be updated and fixed. Some of the issues I’ve seen people have is with cloud sending, I agree it’s an issue, but not even on my radar as my pc is literally next to the print station. It’s only used for design, slicing ect. I’ve grown so accustomed to using the sd card and have amassed so many of them it’s really a non issue. I’m looking forward to your next video. I’ve been waiting to purchase an x1 to see what issues come up. Starting to see update videos now. Thanks for your honest and objective view.

You should definitely revisit cardboard spools. I use them in my AMS extremely regularly, and very rarely do I run into problems. Even when the spool isn't constructed very well and the spool wobbles inside the AMS, I still don't experience problems. The main issue I've ever run into is if the cardboard edges are broken or dented. Then I'm SOL and gotta respool.

What is recommended to order on top appart the X1C Combo? I also prefer to avoid to order multiple times if it’s possible to get the most used parts in the first order. Same for extra parts the will be needed to replace after some time of usage. Any advice or help what to put extra in the shopping 🛒?

I generaly use Cura for my slicing apart from my MKIIIs which gets sliced by Prusa Slicer, I dont like using Prusa slicer, not because its bad, it isn't, its a good slicer! its just I am so used to Cura that when I use Prusa Slicer its like having my right hand tied behind my back,. I have a deposit down for a Prusa XL which I was hoping to get for Christmas 2022 but will be lucky if it shows up by Christmas 2023, I have resigned myself to getting an X1 and an AMS if I dont get a definate release date within the next quarter but that means I have to learn another piece of software, I am also trying to learn Fusion 360 with not a lot of spare time to do so, I think I may need to choose my definative slicer and stick to that one slicer but that would mean not getting an X1, I am in a quandry!

I've had one of these since the Kickstarter was fulfilled and have used Polymaker spools without any issues. I have two AMS units (one of each revision) and have experienced no problems whatsoever. But hey, you do you.

Howdy! One thing you might ask BambuLabs is if they plan to expand the availability for other countries in a reasonable time frame. It’s not available for Brazilian enthusiasts, for example.
I know they're working hard to get more retailers - they just signed 3 up in Israel, so surely Brazil is coming soon.
Great video, and it's refreshing to see a Prusa owner acknowledging the areas where Prusa has lagged, and acknowledging Bambu's faults. I appreciate the objectivity, especially in this age of fanboys. I own both, and appreciate them both for their strengths. Now, a couple of points: 🙂 The reason for not including the PEI plate with the X1 series is because the LIDAR doesn't work properly with the textured PEI sheet. That's why PEI is stock on the P1P and the cool/engineering plate is stock on the X1 series. As for cardboard spools not working, that's not exactly correct. I have had minimal issues with them, and, I find using vinyl electrical tape on the cardboard spools is far easier and less wasteful in time and materials than printing the spool rings but to each their own based on their own needs and use cases. On a video production note, the different recording sources is kind of jarring. The main video isn't smooth at all or the usual quality of your other videos, but the couch scene and future you talking about the problems being fixed is much better. It's almost like the main video was shot on a Raspberry Pi cam, while the others are shot on a much better camera.

They should implement a "purge within non visible layers" functionality.
Your video makes me thing of something I'd love to see regarding calibrating the amount of filament flushed when changing colors. It would be nice if you could do a test print on the build plate where it prints while flushing filament and changing between colors. You could look at the line on the build plate and decide how much filament actually needed to be flushed to fully switch colors and use that value to program in the flush amount for that change in the future. In a mere 16 lines printed on the build plate, you could calibrate flush amounts for all permutations of the types of filament in an AMS. The printer or studio could save those calibrated values for the same filaments in the future. Heck, if they tracked specific brands and filaments instead of just "generic" they could probably gather the calibration information from the community and train their own estimates. For example, it could, based on the calibration and feedback from the community, recommend 150 mm3 of purge from a black Overture PLA to a blue Anycubic PLA.

Good video. I have had my X1 for about 3 weeks and had the same problems. Took a while to figure out the slicer and moving the files to the printer. A couple of things that I don't like, you save the 3MF file, but not gcode, so you have to reslice to print again, you can't just send the gcode. The cloud is always involved. You can select LAN mode, but have no camera access. The AMS should include a Y spliter for the external spool feed. I printed almost 10 before I found a good one
There are only 3 things to worry about. Flow of the input material. Heat of the nozzle. And speed of the extruder. Then you have other things. But no one mentions this. Can you modify everything?! If its slightly dry that day or the bed isnt heating well. Or its humid.

I recently got the flashforge 5M pro and love it. My only "dislike" is that I can only use one color. I'm not super skilled at painting and I use the printer mainly for decorative items around the house. How would you compare the quality of the 5M pro to this printer? The quality of the 5M pro is really good, and I don't want to "downgrade" just for colors.

I do have a carbon X1. Initially I had a problem with the webcam not working. I started contacting costumer service and was expecting to solve the issue in minimum a week. To my surprise in less than an hour someone looked into the issue and after about 2 hours the issue was solved. Their costumer service is top notch!
Good review. My team at work looked at this printer but we went for the ultimaker 7 full kit with material bay, this machine has a lot of the features that Ultimaker has. This looks to be a really great bit of kit for the price, a tenth of the Ulti 7. I really like the nozzle cleaner, the ulitmaker just releases excess filament to the side of the bed, which builds up under the bed.. The dual nozzle, multi-filament print option on these printers is very wasteful.
