LYRICS (from lyricstranslate.com):
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, my endless lake,
What days await me as a soldier,
You keep coming into my mind from time to time,
My amazing homeland, where I was born and raised
I wasn't riding, I was walking,
Even slower than walking,
Been strolling for 15 days
In the direction of Omsk
I'm at the age of two cycles, the year of the cow
By the will of Fate, I went farther away
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, you're left behind
From the hollow field, we are the only ones
I had parents,
Of progressed age,
Since this song was written,
It's been 16 years.
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, my endless lake,
What days await me as a soldier

  • The 2 stringed instrument is a kobyz, the strings are horsehair and it has 5,000 year history. The flute is called a Sybyzgy, the instruments on the wall are a selection of Dombra, and a type of Zither called a Jetigen. This is streamed from his home music room/studio in Astana Kazakhstan to the Jazz Festival in Tokyo on his 26th birthday on Sunday 24th May. He seems to have caused the usual stir as his videos are the most viewed, he sang SOS as well. Its on his official KZhead channel and so is his original performance of this song at the Silk Road Film Festival last year 💗

  • A couple of years ago, if you'd suggested to me that I would acquire a taste for Kazakh traditional songs and instruments, I'd have laughed. I'm so thoroughly Westernized, I sleep with cowboy boots on, put grits on my hot dogs, and hum Madonna songs in the shower. It probably *is* a bit incongruous for an old man to growl 'Like a Virgin' with suds in what's left of his hair, but oh, well. Then Dimash entered my life, and there's no going back. Only problem: I can't even begin to sing the songs he performs. My octave-and-a-half won't cut it, and if I dared to attempt his runs, my throat would spasm, which is good, because then no sound comes out. It would be much worse if sound came out. I'll have to leave the serious singing to the professionals. I love the strange (to my ears) instrumentals in this song, and Dimash somehow manages to deliver a true concert performance with a mic and two guys sitting behind him in an otherwise empty room. His vocal ornamentations are sublime, and utterly unlike anything we hear on Western radio. As usual, he's in perfect command of his instrument. It's easy to believe he has been singing this song for many years. The emotion of the song comes through loud and clear. Dimash doesn't use his enormous range in this song, and he doesn't need to. People who think he's just a gimmick singer with some unusual high notes aren't understanding his vocal virtuosity. Cheers!

I'm an Indonesian btw and I preferred watching the US versions than the ones in my country. I never missed any single episodes of them, ha! Then Dimash appeared in my life and now I'm not as interested watching those shows as I was used to. I'd rather watch his concerts or reaction videos to him than watching the newest episode of the voice on TV 😂 I can't sing any verse of any Dimash's songs properly and I wanted to whine about that but then I remember that his songs are meant to be sung by an angel or a king or a god himself. So yeah. I'm fine with it 😆😆

I agree with you, Dimash is much more than high marks. There are songs where he doesn't need to use his powerful high notes, just his great emotion and his normal voice make the music magnificent. Listen to a famous Turkish song GESI BAGLARI in the voice of Dimash, it is sensational, he sang at a very young Turkish festival, by copyright the video was blocked, without high or low notes, or the song KUSNI KORLAN based on real facts of the life of a famous Kazakh poet and musician ESTAY BERKINBAYEV. There are beautiful versions of Dimash singing this song. I send the link to the videos. SAMALTAU has a lot of presence, strength, is magnificent, but the others are also very beautiful.

  • "Samal Tau" It is a traditional Kazakh song that talks about a soldier, who is forced to leave his home, to march to an unknown land and fight in a foreign war, known as "The Great War" or "First World War" . Between the agony of that instrument that is listened to, which hits the exact tear of one who is going to fight a war and separates himself from his affections and where only desolation and death await him. Our beloved Prince with that genuine feeling, turns a song of so much pain into a story that claims the life of every soldier who perished. Brilliant Dimash, you are not only an excellent singer and great performer, but you are also a great storyteller of your ancestors. It is a blessing to know that there is a possibly unique BEING, who has the gift of transmitting the word in all its range, doing it with the passion that you do. I can't stop thanking you and I ask God for the opportunity at some point in my life to feel your vibrant voice close to me. greetings from Argentina

  • Dimash is a modern minstrel. Within his repertoire, he searches for and interprets songs with deep social / human content to make us reflect on the evils of war, exile, and death. Thus, for example, the song composed by him "war and peace", he rescued a song by a Japanese exile "autumm strong", by a kasajo poet imprisoned and executed "daididau", and several others. Different countries, different stories, a single origin, the horror of war. Dimash is an ambassador of peace, from his art. This samaltau theme causes me chills, a deep sadness ... there is a section that is heartbreaking lament. It's a thoughtful song Cheers!

    • @@casaspucon I think you may find the word among Kazakh historical literature: "Sal-Seri". Dimash is very much in the tradition of these historical nomadic persons. The origin of his song, "Dudaraz" is attributed to Birzhan Sal, the first of this group of what might be akin to western "knights", a culture of extravagant artist/warriors who defended the country and also traveled to entertain the people. It's a fascinating history, and I think Dimash is steeped in it. If you're interested, a good starting place is here: kzhead.info/sun/lKmLd6qaml-ZfYU/bejne.html&

    • @dakota Yes, "without borders", "modern musical genius" would be perfect. However, that word is so blurred that, over time, it has been so hackneyed that it can be applied to anyone who does something unusual. Genius goes beyond innovation or rarity. Also, I am referring to the PHYSICAL genius (his voice and show) INTELLECTUAL (his musical creativity and his lyrical preferences), along with the UNIVERSALITY of the space that is, as when troubadours went from town to town communicating feelings and events. ... and in this case, it is broader, because it not only goes from "town to town" but even navigates between countries that have micro and macro conflicts (even, I think he has avoided certain war) and with its EXAMPLE (cordiality, respect, love, desire to sing!) Was able to unite DEARS of all nationalities, races and creeds, I don't know if the same thing happens with another singer. AND TEMPORARY because it recalls historical events, many of them shocking / reflective, in the search for peace and understanding. And beware, I'm not idealizing him. It is better this way, because I think that he is not aware of the weight of his Being and genius. It's natural :) I spread .. I hope you understand (I speak Spanish and use a translator ) Regards from Chile

  • Hauntingly beautiful. Wonderfully inspirational. This song has touched me with the remembrance of the moment in which these words were born within my own world. Being a dual service veteran of the military I can close my eyes and feel the longing to the bottom of my soul as you head into a war, not of your own making. Wondering if you will see again the loved ones and places that you love so much. I can feel every note of this as if to remind me of my deepest fear of never being able to return from that war. Dear Dimash becomes a soldier that so desperately wants to return to the beauty that he is being forced to leave behind. I believe that there is no one better at taking us as listeners deep into a story, just as if we are walking there ourselves. I so love this song! Also being a musician with over 50 years of experience I honestly can say that I have never heard instrumentation so emotionally played. Wow!

Не хочу обидеть акынов, но современные "акыны"- рэперы - это просто чума для мелодий и музыки, порождение безголосых "менестрелей". Вот поэтому в мире все, кто еще думает, хотят величайшего успеха Димашу и ему подобным.

  • Hear the sounds of the steppes in the instruments? I hear the wind, sounds of water, a wolf howling, dogs barking (even yelping--I think they met the wolf LOL). A part of this young Kazakh's inner being is wrapped up in those sounds, but they exist now only in his memory. Dimash never looks directly at the camera (his audience) as he sings, unlike most of his other performances--he portrays the young man as turned inside himself somewhere, remembering. And the sound of running water at the end, like tears...

  • If you liked the intro to this, I bet you would also like "Heaven" by Tengri on Singer 2018. It starts out with Mongolian throat and polyphonic singing with Mongolian stringed instruments. Tengri uses unusual vocal dynamic techniques. After meeting Dimash when Dimash covered Lionel Richie's "Hello" on Singer 2018, Tengri later sang the duet "Swan Goose" with Dimash. I'd suggest seeing Tengri's "Heaven" first. Here's a version with Eng.subs under the name Tengger : kzhead.info/sun/iMeagNmBmn2Zea8/bejne.html

  • That's Olzhas Qurmanbek one of Dimash's greatest friends and musician colleagues. His virtuosity playing the kobiz is undeniable. He transports us to the steppe and the mountains of Kazakhstan. We almost can see the wolves howling at the moon light in the middle of a blizzard, we can almost feel the freezing wind. Dimash's voice is another story, he's able to send us centuries beyond into the past. He makes us cry while he tells the story, even if we don't understand a word we feel the pain of his ancestors.

I could go on and on. Dimash is at home right now planning an Album of Kazakh songs, he was just out looking at the beautiful landscape, looking for inspiration, then went back into his studio to work. • Thank you so much!❤ Yet again, I've found myself having to play through your Dimash reaction/analyses again and again, before feeling able to string a vaguely coherent sentence together, lol! The first time around, I was just too mesmerised by Dimash's incredible voice and charisma (charismatic voice?😉) to even think straight, so it was a case of having to go right back to the start again, to enjoy your genuinely delightful reactions in real time... and that's where today's third viewing became necessary, due to how many times my eyes were still being drawn back to what was going on on the left of my screen! Then *again* to replay the chat, and then a FIFTH time to see if I could scribble down a few notes (nerd that I am!)... but after all that, guess what - I've still been left (almost!) speechless! But you know what, I think that's ok too...🤗 So instead, let me thank you again for another great reaction, and wish you all the best ❤❤❤ - for now though, I think I might be in need of just a teensy-tiny little bit more Dimash? (wel! that's MY entire evening spoken for, then!😂)

  • Thank you for your reaction. Dimash is currently working on an album of Kazakh music. Not sure when it will be released, but I am patiently waiting for it. There he is sitting in his home studio cross legged on a piano bench, in a button down shirt, wearing no shoes, with three instruments and a sound board, but able to take us to the Great Steppes in his country, and feel the story. FYI the harp instrument hanging on the wall on the far right was crafted in Belarus for Dimash by SergeyChubrik Ales Chumakov, and presented to him by the Dimash fan club in Belarus. Stay safe and healthy! Blessings to you!

  • The tool is called Kobyz. Kobyz is the ancestor of the violin. Two strings, imposed on the kobyz, are twisted from horse hair. The total length of the tool is 60-73 cm. The double Cup of the resonator reflects the tengrian worldview of the nomads-the creators of kobyz-in which the dawn and sunset are reflected, and in two strings-the top and bottom of the universe. • This is one of my favorites, now. The two musicians totally invoked the sounds of Nature of those mountains. And it was thrilling to me to hear Dimash deliver such an impassioned "call" to that Nature, singing solidly and so richly in his midrange the music that is 'exotic' and mysterious to our western ears. It made me think of one of my favorite classical pieces - Borodin's In the Steppes of Central Asia. OMG - I was almost shouting at his last loud cry - don't stop it there, for the love of God! Hahahaha...but you went well back to catch that dramatic effect of him pouring out his very soul to echo off the mountains, then that soft resignation - wah!
