From Garbage to Stomach! The World's Largest Recycling Plant!
A recycling plant usually goes through the following stages:
Collection and Sorting: Recyclable materials are usually collected from households, businesses and public areas. These materials are then sorted at the entrance of the facility. Usually the materials are placed in different containers or belts, separated by type. For example, glass, plastic, metal and paper products are collected separately.
Pre-processing: The collected materials then go through a pre-processing stage. At this stage, materials may be subject to large fragments or contaminations (e.g. foreign materials or pollutants). In some plants, materials are first ground or crushed.
Cleaning and Sorting: Materials are then cleaned and sorted. For example, paper products may be cleaned with water and chemical treatments, while plastic and metal parts may be separated using magnets or specialized electronic tools.
Preparation: Materials usually undergo some preparation before they are made recyclable. For example, paper products are pulped, plastics are melted and metal parts are smelted.
Recovery and Processing: Once materials are made recyclable, they enter the recovery and processing phase. In this stage, the materials are made reusable. For example, melted plastics can be used to produce new plastic products, pulp can be used to produce paper products and metal parts can be used to produce new metal products.
Remarketing and Resale: Recycled materials are often marketed and sold. In this stage, buyers of the recycled materials are reached and sold. This process results in the recycled materials being used in the production of new products.
This process provides an overview and each recycling plant may include specific details or different stages.
