It's like watching some kind of arcane ritual. I can totally imagine this being the section of a movie where they show how they finally complete the ultimate superweapon that will destroy the Galaxy, that the heroes will have to destroy, or something.

  • This is a scarp melting furnace using an enormous amount of electricity in the form of an electric arc. Blast furnaces can melt raw iron ore as well as recycled metal, while electric arc furnaces only melt recycled or scrap metal. Blast furnaces primarily use coke to supply the energy needed to heat up the metal.

  • 5:43 - it's not so much about moderately high "voltage" (below 1 kV, or 1000 V), it's the current (amperage) that does the heating - see Joule's Law, Q = R * I^2 * t where Q is energy (heat), R is resistance of the conductor, I (= capital "i") is the current (i.e. "amperes") and t = time. Notice that "I" is squared - hence this is the most important component in the equation And the current here (in electric arc furnace) is "in excess of 44 kA, or 44000 A" says Auntie Wiki, and who am I to question her knowledge or challenge her authority, eh? ;-) For comparison - regular stick or MAG/ MIG welding of such "I-beams" (or "H-beams" as some call it) would be around 200 A, maybe 300 A - with voltage about 30 - 60 V. 6:13 - that looks more like slag tapping to me, and the steel is not "filtered" - it's the added flux (CaO and MgO) that melts and absorb impurities, forming the slag (that floats onto the surface of molten steel, aka "the heat". Other than that, an excellent video : )
