For sure I would live in a tax heaven. As Javier Milei says "Tax heaven exists because tax hell exists." It doesnt matter what job a person does, each person works hard for his/her money. It is not fair to give a big amount of it to politicians. But I also think that each person has the freedom to choose where to live and who to give his/her money (like Nadal in Spain or Djokovic in Montecarlo).

Hospitals can be private and provide much better health service than a public hospital. You dont need the state to give you money when you are old. You can save money, invest it and get your own social security. Maybe you like to depend on the state, I dont.

No one can criticize that, but most of the money colected by goverment is wasted and even stolen. People is just stupid if they think paying those ridiculous taxes is necesary for hospitals, education, and all that stuff. Reality is much worse than that. Blaming wealthy people for going to Andorra, Monaco, Dubai, or Switzerland is being stupid. Its totally understandable. Specially when you live in spain where the goverment takes at least half their income and they still criticize rich people in the media. Meanwhile politicians take everything they can out of our pockets and avoid their own rules. They are SCUM

Basically, you´re admitting to being unable to imagine it any other way than to exploit a position of even moderate power to your own advantage. Or maybe you are in such a position, shamelessly exploit it, and try to justify your beaviour after the fact. @@lov6858 That's incorrect. To represent a country at Olympics, you have to prove nationality and NOT citizenship. Having an active Spanish citizenship status is ONE way of proving nationality, but there are other ways too. Other valid reasons include being born in Spain or having Spanish ancestry (eg mother was Spanish). Nadal would qualify for both. So even if he does move to Montecarlo, he could still represent Spain during international competitions.

You might add the Monte Carlo Country Club has 21 clay courts and great facilities and unlike other clubs as long as you have the money you can join aka no waiting list! Failing that, you can join Tennis Club de Monaco for 400e. If that's too steep drop down to Cap d'Ail where they have 5 clay courts for 20e per hour 🙂

Most places provide a tax credit for foreign taxes paid. Also when the video says “flat 30%” tax in the USA, that’s only a withholding tax. One can and should file a tax return and claim expenses against the income. Some of the tax will be refunded. I don’t think that in most cases it’s double taxation that’s an issue because of the tax credit. Where the savings are is in tax savings on endorsements, royalties etc that cannot be linked to earning money through physical presence in a foreign jurisdiction. Much of that money is only taxed in home jurisdiction. Think Federer earning 90 million in a year but only 7 million is from winnings.

I know it's a long, long time ago, but in the list of the tennis stars and superstars, you should have included Bjorn Borg, who in the late 70s and early 80s chose Monte Carlo as his base. IMG was his management Co, so they would've suggested this tax haven, instead of his home country of Sweden, where the taxes are insanely high (though they get lifelong social benefits!).

And he made a good decision, cause even at 60+, he is worth 40-50 Millions. That's great for someone who played Tennis until he was like 26 and he played in the 70s when the prize money wasn't that high. Good on him. All hail tax havens. i p, that's a good point, however he doesn't need to live in a tax heaven. He has enough money to build all the facilities he needs in his house, or anywhere else. Tennis players spend most of the year on the road playing in tournaments upto 50 weeks of the year. So he changed his residency so he doesn't pay taxes, and in monte carlo no one pays taxes, a playground for the super rich. Serbia is the 72nd richest country in the world, just ahead of the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. I'm sure the tax revenue from Djockovic would go a long way to helping his country. Just think about that.

I love Monaco and have spent a lot of time there for work and pleasure! But I am not rich! A couple additional facts. Monaco is not a tax haven for French people or Americans. There is also a big population of elite Tour de France cyclists because of tax and proximity to mountains! (Also Nice). Monaco is also home for many F1 drivers!

Not really. You don't pay taxes because you want to visit your home country. On the other hand US citizens are double taxed (in case you earn a lot of money, I think more than US$150.000 per year). It's not the same though for almost all the other countries in the world.

Are you sure about the Delpotro example? Will Arg double tax? Wont Delpo only have to pay Arg Tax rate % - 30%(taxed by uncle Sam). I think players like Novak and others make more outside of prize money. Those will be taxed based on their residency and hence Monaco.

Argentina doesn’t have a tax treaty with the US. There are ways to reduce the tax burden and avoid double taxation, but this was just a basic example and thought there was no point on getting too detailed

Not entirely true - taxpayers can buy government bonds or place their money in other tax-saving instruments. Besides, they're also allowed to book expenses against their earnings, further reducing their tax burden. Furthermore, the vast majority of european countries have DTAAs with other countries around the world, which means you aren't going to be taxed twice. In my view, apart from marginal benefits you cite, the main benefit of living in Monaco is safety and well-being for the family - someone like Medvedev would be the target of extortionists in Russia. Monaco is probably the safest place in the world. Another benefit is ease of doing business - you could place your earnings in a company, and then move it offshore with ease.

Other things to keep in mind: 1- Players cannot "expense" their coaches, travel, gear, etc. Those (huge) costs are not deduced from their prize money when they are taxed, which can make things really difficult financially, especially for those who don't earn as much as the top players. 2- A career in Tennis (or almost any sport) is much shorter than an average career working a typical corporate job until the age of 65-70. This means that Tennis players will have to live their entire lives off of the money they make until they retire (generally between 35 and 40). Yet they are taxed the same way each year as someone with a more traditional career path. 3- Switzerland is not a tax haven. 4- There are ways to dodge taxes even if you live in Spain. Just look at the scandals with Ronaldo when he was with Real Madrid, for example. So take Nadal's comments with a pinch of salt. Edit: I'm not sure about #1.

I would prefer to be based in Monte Carlo. And with that sort of money which you save, eg double taxation or the highest tax level for all your earnings, including millions in sponsorship deals, you can own homes in different parts of the world. Given that being a top tennis player means travelling constantly throughout the year, it means you're likely hardly in your home country in a year. So why pay millions of dollars in tax to a country you're hardly in.

And please don't give me Nadal as an example of how everyone else should be living their lives. Novak spent all his post Australia time in Serbia. And a lot of it prior to it. He has residence there and in Monaco. He has a villa built north of Belgrade as well as a tennis Academy where he personally mentors and coaches kids when he has the chance. Seven or so out of top 10 players have their residences in Monaco, some players live in Dubai, some in Switzerland, virtually all of the formula 1 drivers are in Monaco... So what? They are already taken about 30% of their winnings for tax purposes before they even get a paycheck. It is more important how they invest that money by giving back to those who are less fortunate. Novak's taxes surely wouldn't have been used to purchase the more than one million dollar worth of ventilators. But he bought them and donated them to the hospitals.

For sure I would live in a tax heaven. As Javier Milei says "Tax heaven exists because tax hell exists." It doesnt matter what job a person does, each person works hard for his/her money. It is not fair to give a big amount of it to politicians. But I also think that each person has the freedom to choose where to live and who to give his/her money (like Nadal in Spain or Djokovic in Montecarlo).

Having an active Spanish citizenship status is ONE way of proving nationality, but there are other ways too. Other valid reasons include being born in Spain or having Spanish ancestry (eg mother was Spanish). Nadal would qualify for both. So even if he does move to Montecarlo, he could still represent Spain during international competitions.

Failing that, you can join Tennis Club de Monaco for 400e. If that's too steep drop down to Cap d'Ail where they have 5 clay courts for 20e per hour 🙂

Most places provide a tax credit for foreign taxes paid. Also when the video says “flat 30%” tax in the USA, that’s only a withholding tax. One can and should file a tax return and claim expenses against the income. Some of the tax will be refunded. I don’t think that in most cases it’s double taxation that’s an issue because of the tax credit. Where the savings are is in tax savings on endorsements, royalties etc that cannot be linked to earning money through physical presence in a foreign jurisdiction. Much of that money is only taxed in home jurisdiction. Think Federer earning 90 million in a year but only 7 million is from winnings.

I know it's a long, long time ago, but in the list of the tennis stars and superstars, you should have included Bjorn Borg, who in the late 70s and early 80s chose Monte Carlo as his base. IMG was his management Co, so they would've suggested this tax haven, instead of his home country of Sweden, where the taxes are insanely high (though they get lifelong social benefits!).
And he made a good decision, cause even at 60+, he is worth 40-50 Millions. That's great for someone who played Tennis until he was like 26 and he played in the 70s when the prize money wasn't that high. Good on him. All hail tax havens. If I ever get a lucrative career in the future, I'll make sure to move to a tax haven as well.

I think that for Djokovic even bigger reason than money is the fact that living in Serbia would make it really hard for him to go out anywhere at all without people taking pictures with him :-)
i p, that's a good point, however he doesn't need to live in a tax heaven. He has enough money to build all the facilities he needs in his house, or anywhere else. Tennis players spend most of the year on the road playing in tournaments upto 50 weeks of the year. So he changed his residency so he doesn't pay taxes, and in monte carlo no one pays taxes, a playground for the super rich. Serbia is the 72nd richest country in the world, just ahead of the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. I'm sure the tax revenue from Djockovic would go a long way to helping his country. Just think about that.

I love Monaco and have spent a lot of time there for work and pleasure! But I am not rich! A couple additional facts. Monaco is not a tax haven for French people or Americans. There is also a big population of elite Tour de France cyclists because of tax and proximity to mountains! (Also Nice). Monaco is also home for many F1 drivers!

Not really. You don't pay taxes because you want to visit your home country. On the other hand US citizens are double taxed (in case you earn a lot of money, I think more than US$150.000 per year). It's not the same though for almost all the other countries in the world.

Are you sure about the Delpotro example? Will Arg double tax? Wont Delpo only have to pay Arg Tax rate % - 30%(taxed by uncle Sam). I think players like Novak and others make more outside of prize money. Those will be taxed based on their residency and hence Monaco.
Argentina doesn’t have a tax treaty with the US. There are ways to reduce the tax burden and avoid double taxation, but this was just a basic example and thought there was no point on getting too detailed

Monaco is probably the safest place in the world. Another benefit is ease of doing business - you could place your earnings in a company, and then move it offshore with ease.

Other things to keep in mind: 1- Players cannot "expense" their coaches, travel, gear, etc. Those (huge) costs are not deduced from their prize money when they are taxed, which can make things really difficult financially, especially for those who don't earn as much as the top players. 2- A career in Tennis (or almost any sport) is much shorter than an average career working a typical corporate job until the age of 65-70. This means that Tennis players will have to live their entire lives off of the money they make until they retire (generally between 35 and 40). Yet they are taxed the same way each year as someone with a more traditional career path. 3- Switzerland is not a tax haven. 4- There are ways to dodge taxes even if you live in Spain. Just look at the scandals with Ronaldo when he was with Real Madrid, for example. So take Nadal's comments with a pinch of salt. Edit: I'm not sure about #1.

I would prefer to be based in Monte Carlo. And with that sort of money which you save, eg double taxation or the highest tax level for all your earnings, including millions in sponsorship deals, you can own homes in different parts of the world. Given that being a top tennis player means travelling constantly throughout the year, it means you're likely hardly in your home country in a year. So why pay millions of dollars in tax to a country you're hardly in.
Whenever Nadal is not competing he is in Spain, that's plenty of time lol Not sure why you think that's hardly any time.

Seven or so out of top 10 players have their residences in Monaco, some players live in Dubai, some in Switzerland, virtually all of the formula 1 drivers are in Monaco... So what? They are already taken about 30% of their winnings for tax purposes before they even get a paycheck. It is more important how they invest that money by giving back to those who are less fortunate. Novak's taxes surely wouldn't have been used to purchase the more than one million dollar worth of ventilators. But he bought them and donated them to the hospitals.

If you are from Korea, China, Japan and west Europe and to some extent Australia, Gulf Arab countries it doesn't make much sense to move to Monaco but if you're from the developing world it makes lot of sense as most of your taxes are eaten up by corrupt officials
