The 5 Greatest Gatekeepers In The UFC

  • Colby isn’t the Welterweight gatekeeper. I honestly think that could be Gilbert Burns, because at least Burns is actually active and still taking fights against top contenders

  • I can’t call Colby a gatekeeper. You have to habitually be deflating contenders to do that- key being active. I’m only one in so I’m eager to hear the rest but Gaethje is the perennial gate keeper for me: the measuring stick, benchmark for which we compare title fight worthiness. Never understood why ppl view it as a bad thing.

    @CYMotorsport@CYMotorsport Жыл бұрын
    • Gaethje has been beaten a bit too much to be the effective yardstick. He’s very good and rightfully in the top 5 but he’s not the level of Max or Whittaker.

    • because he didn't really do as much to defend or earn his position while he was ranked no. 1, compared to the other ww contenders who kept fighting (burns, Belal etc.) Colby fought woodley (who was ranked 5, coming off 2 straight losses and obviously on a huge decline) after his first loss to Usman and then fought Jorge (ranked 10 and coming off 2 straight losses as well, one of which was a ko). Other than that he's just been sitting idle and not fighting anyone. He's leapfrogged other contenders because even though in the official rankings he's #1, in reality there are other fighters that deserve to fight for the title more than him. I like Colby, and honestly I'm really intrigued by the potential Leon vs colby matchup, but the truth is that it should be some other guy fighting for the title and he should fight someone else in the rankings. Not that it matters though because Dana white privilege doesn't give a fuck about what I have to say LMAOO

  • Dustin's status is kinda voluntary though. I can't read his mind but it seems to me like he knows he doesn't have the skill set to beat the current or any likely future champs so he's going after big names he can beat to secure his family's future. Good for him he's had a career 99% of fighters can only dream of but his choice of opponents doesn't tell me he's still hungry to be the champ. If anyone is really a gatekeeper at 155 right now Gaethje put Chandler on the money fight career track and knocked Fiziev back down the ladder and we all kinda expect the grapplers above him to make light work of him

      @GrubKiller436@GrubKiller436 Жыл бұрын
    • @@GrubKiller436 I think you're the confused one. I'm saying Dustin's status as "always just outside the title picture" NOW is voluntary because he's had 2 title shots and lost bad and he knows he doesn't have more than a puncher's chance against Islam, Oliveira, or anyone else likely to hold the belt before he retires but he's not a "gatekeeper" who can't seem to get another title shot because he is doing the smart thing and using his name and remaining brand value to go after big money fights he knows he can win instead of high-risk fights against hungry contenders trying to reach the title themselves. So in my humble estimation, he's not getting another title shot because he's not chasing it with the opponents he's picked lately and he hasn't been anyone's final test before getting to the title picture. He's mature enough to realize a belt is not gonna feed his family so instead he's fighting has-beens on losing streaks with big names and putting money in the bank for his family's future, which doesn't fit most people's definition of gatekeeper

      @mas72450@mas72450 Жыл бұрын
    • @@mas72450 Pretty dumb thing to say considering Islam is a very new champ and has merely had only one title defense, and we don't know what the plans are for his next title defense. You haven't shown any evidence to Dustin rejecting a title shot. And obviously Alex Volk was not gatekept by Dustin because he's a literal champ and was the UFC's #1 P4P at the time.

  • I don't think you quite understand what 'a gatekeeper' is. A gatekeeper isn't just someone who can't capture the title... A gatekeeper is a fighter who is past their prime and will NEVER capture a title, but they are highly skilled enough to turn away all but the most elite of POTENTIAL title contenders. A gatekeeper is someone who is no longer elite, but also hasn't fallen all the way off. You cannot be ranked in the top 3 of your division and be considered 'a gatekeeper", because you'd be "a contender", and probably no more than a single win away from another crack at the title. Also, if absolutely NO ONE can't beat you beyond the champion, you aren't a gatekeeper, because other high-level fighters should be able to hop the gate... So if no one can get past the gate, then that's a wall.
