Messi scores a gifted penalty and an open net tap in from 4m away and gets MoTM award. 2. • France was completely dominated for 70'. No chance creation at all. Deschamps substitutions helped, but the tie was mostly Argentina's decision to close the game parking the bus in halfway manner and Mbappe. As soon as they tied and Argentina recovered from the hit, they started dominating again. Save the 5 m after France scored the second goal and Argentina was dazed, there is no point in the game where France played better. Scaloni was much better today. Perhaps he should have fully parked the bus (rather fall back timidly, but did not work with Netherlanda) or bring fresh legs earlier (but it was a tough decision, most Argentine players were having a good game). It does not take from the fact he completely surprised Deschamps with Di Maria en the left. Nobody before this game had thought of attacking the French right. They all attacked the left and France knew how to solve it.

  • Before the game, I was saying (to nobody in particular, haha) that ARG's best defense would be a *good offense*. Scaloni correctly identified that France's willingness to be passive early in games had yet to be exploited by a team with as much firepower as Argentina. England had come close, but couldn't fully capitalize. Scaloni took a bold approach with DiMaria and the 4-3-3 to start and it paid off - not just in 2 goals by HT, but in keeping France on their back heels and even forcing Mbappe to track back further than he normally does, which somewhat mitigated his speed advantage. Argentina's midfield were also aggressive as heck once again, clogging the middle and frustrating France's pace with the stop-go play from the fouls. Scaloni doesn't yet have the long resume of other coaches, but he deserves more props for his tactical flexibility through this tournament.

  • You nailed, Di María position was unexpected and created a penalty and a goal by Di María. France decision to replace Griezmann was a mistake in my opinion. It is true that Griezmann was overwhelmed at first, but he was getting the grasp and started to play well. However, MBappe was the difference from France. The first penalty was a clear defensive mistake by Argentina. But again, Messi showed why he is the GOAT, creating passes and finally scored at 108 min. Unfortunately, France got a lucky penalty (handball) at the last minute. Hence the tie. Both Teams played very well. It was the most exciting final WC game I’ve ever seen. Messi involved from the KO with Argentina and Mbappe who everyone is saying is this "amazing player" was ANONYMOUS, completely anonymous, for 70min of a world cup final!!! I don't get it. You have this guy who is as fast a lighting who won't press or track back so you have Giroud and Griezmann; no spring chickens trying to do the work of 3 cos the primadonna wearing no. 10 has just not shown up. What is the manager to do take off Mbappe??? Never happening!!! let's swap out the other two lads both who have had a massive tournament up to then. The French team performance only lifted when Munai was brought down in the box and out of a nothing attack the momentum switched when Mbappe scored. And what did the second goal come from? Messi being robbed at the edge if the attacking third; again Mbappe not within an ass roar of that effort. Mind you his eventual finish was top class. Mbappe had three finishing touches but did nt create a whole lot over the 120min. Contrast this with Messi performance throughout the while game. There is just no comparison. Mbappe bit of a Millenial performer. I d have been brave enough to take him off. The French as much of a goal threat with Griezmann and Giroud on board.

For me, the key was bringing in Camavinga on the 2nd half -- he eventually got the best of a tired De Paul, and that changed the game completely. Messi and Julian also stopped pressing. Around minute 60 I was hoping Scaloni would bring in some fresh legs (Palacios and Lautaro), or maybe Lisandro Martinez to sit deep with 5 defenders. That could have closed off the game, but oh well, we were born to suffer. Paragraph aside for Mbappe, after minute 80 he was a complete nightmare. This game is absolutely historical, likely one of the best (if not the best) world cup finals ever.

  • i think scaloni was kept being underrated (even by this channel) which kept creating the same pattern: scaloni comes with a plan, which puts the other team on the defense. the argentinian's high morale, running ability, and discipline!!! allowed them a very high tactical flexibility, which was later often countered or matched only by sheer tactical experience and often luck of the other teams. netherlands, croatia and france were all tactically between the best teams of the world cup, just to be eaten one by one by argentina. while the weakness of the team was also clear: often good and or lucky shots/moments destabilized them for just enough to get a second goal too, they kept coming back into the game. i would argue that saudis did argentina a favour: it made them stop and think, while other teams looked them down too much. and scaloni came with a plan. Scaloni always came with a plan. IF this nature of this team could be kept intact, and they actually find a proper playmaking replacement for messi, this argentina will be a tough nut to crack... even going as far as being a contender for 2026 too

His team ended up with a chance to win 4-3 when they shoulda lost 3-0. • I think that the mistake Scaloni did was indeed in the substitution of Di Maria, but not because he took him off, but because off who came in. In that phase of the match he should have adapted to a more conservative three center back with Lisandro Martinez instead of Acuna. Even if he was willing to keep the same formation, maybe putting Dybala instead of Di Maria's would have been a better option. In the end in football even with the best tactics it's the small details that win the games, Romero's mistake in the penalty kick, the ball Messi lost in midfield before the second goal and De Paul not covering in defense all the way down, Montiel blocking Mbappe's shot with the hands in front. But also the magical foot of Dibu preventing the forth of France. What a game! Argentina definitely like to suffer! And for me Messi is the GOAT.

  • French here: so sad to see players like Griezmann, Hernandes, Kounde that are doing a brilliant World Cup only to be really bad at the last game. I am not even talking about Dembele who was even worse. It took one player, Mbappe, to cause trouble to an entire country, just imagine if we had half the team who played a decent game. Lloris like always, amazing in game but absolutely terrible in Penaltys. We will come back stronger, we have an amazing generation coming with Kolo Muani, Thuram, Upamecano, Camavinga and others. The pressing of Argentina was too much for us, well played to them, Di Maria was a MONSTER, not sure why he took him out because from that point we started to have more room and the game switched. Congrats to Messi, this is the icing on the cake for him and his career. We see each other football fan in 2024 for the Euro ;)

  • I think there’s two or three main reasons as to why Argentina almost let France win. 1. Taking off Di Maria- this has got to be the number one reason, his ability and skill was just terrorizing the France right hand side. I bet even with a stronger player they subbed on Di Maria would’ve still caused problems. 2. Allowing pressure to amount - Argentina are the best at having possession and playing from the back, versus the Netherlands showed the whole world that Argentina are vulnerable at the back especially if you have strong, and faster attackers. Also overloading them is a very good idea. 3. Probably just giving away that first penalty, I know France were putting on pressure, but I think Mbappe scoring the first goal really was the reason why France stopped looking sloppy. In all honesty Argentina outplayed them for the first 70 minutes- I think we can all agree that. I think the first half they played may have been the best half they’ve played the whole tournament and the second goal was a perfect personification of the tactics and the performances from the argentine players. But of course France have the youngest, and fastest overran squad in the whole tournament, that is very dangerous. I mean I was so fucking anxious, I literally woke up twice in the middle of the night thinking I had messed the game and that France had beaten Argentina each time I woke up. But now I think I can rest way for the next 6 months knowing Messi finally achieved his fairytale ending that many thought would have been impossible even 1.5 years ago.

  • You're not taking in consideration that Scaloni actually updated the formation for this game, by using DiMaria on the left side for first time in the cup. That was also one very important tweak from Scaloni just for this match, Yes Deschamps was outstanding with his tactical decisions, but putting Di Maria was a high risk choice, that could bring everything down from one moment to another, that single choice was clever and gave the winning score during the first halftime.

Only Brazil and France have this kind of bench, and even Brazil's bench is not as all-arounder as France, since it's mostly a very offensive bench nowadays. Not saying that Argentina's bench is bad, it is not, but their spare players are not all-arounders like the french ones, but they all ahve their own peak attributes, as Paredes and Dybala's penalty potential

      @glennbooth3386@glennbooth3386 Жыл бұрын
    • @@brocklandersx87 By that logic we should abolish club football altogether. If it's about international football, Pele is ahead of Messi and Maradona combined. If it's about club football, Cristiano is ahead of Messi, Pele, Maradona combined. Messi has 3 champions leagues in 14 years, Ronaldo won 4 in 5 years. Regarding the World cup: 1. Ronaldo for some reason didn't have the whole world including referees, Fifa president, national team players/opponents, media cheering for him to win the World cup, Messi had. 2. Ronaldo didn't had teammates willing to die to win matches, they were busy trying to show individual brilliance in order to get a better club for themselves. 3. Ronaldo didn't get 6 penalties in 7 matches all at 0-0 which is basically starting the match at 1-0 already. 4. Ronaldo comes from a season where he lost his child, which led to a broken relationship with his club and affected his playtime & form. 5. Winning the world cup is more than skills, it requires tremendous amount of luck too, imagine having half of your final opponent's players injured, both of their starting defenders getting poisoned/ill just 2 days before the match, starting each match with a controversially given penalty and much more. Don't forget that Ronaldo has won the EUROs which is as difficult to win as the World Cup if you consider the opponents. Don't b*tch about Morocco beating Belgium, Spain and others this year, i'm talking about 2016 when Belgium was a top 3 team, and so was England, France and the other top teams like Croatia who competed. (I'm not saying EURO is as big as the world cup, it isn't, but in terms of difficulty don't BS me as Argentina literally played Mexico, Australia, Netherlands and an ageing Croatia to reach the final)

But Deschamps made some brilliant changes, like allowing Coman to roam inside and press, which is what won them the ball (off Messi no less!) for the penalty. Scaloni won the tactical battle, then lost the game management battle by subbing out Di Maria early for Acuna (though this may have been injury enforced seeing as Di Maria had just recovered) but leaving the battered De Paul and the increasingly under pressure Molina on. Feel that with Di Maria’s sub, Scaloni should’ve brought on Montiel for Molina to bring fresher legs against the double pace threat of Thuram and Mbappe, and maybe Lisandro/Palacios for De Paul to increase the control over the right hand side and solidify the midfield.
