    • Playing for a long time doesn't make you a better player, it just makes your career more successful. If you want to be the best, you have to reach the highest level and the best way to compare players is comparing their best seasons, bcs then you can see how high the level was that a player has reached. Until now, Messi in his 5th best season (10/11, 11/12, 12/13, 14/15, 18/19) was a better player than CR7, Mbappe and Haaland in their best season if you look at the average performance level p90. Until no one reaches this level, no one will be able to call themselves a better player, regardless of how long a player plays.

  • Short answer: it's much too late for them to do that Longer answer: surpassing Messi/Ronaldo has something more to do than just stats and trophies. They would have to display performances comparable to their best seasons (like they did in 2018 for Mbappé, 2023 for Haaland) for 10+ years straight, while setting an inhuman gap between them and the rest of the still-active best players of their era. (Oh and Mbappé still plays in a weaker Ligue 1 so there's that)

    • I think the best way to compare players is to compare their best seasons. Messi in his 5th best season (10/11, 11/12, 12/13, 14/15, 18/19) was a better player than CR7, Haaland and Mbappe in their best season, which speaks volumes. I think they can compete with the longevity and overall numbers, but nobody will reach the same level as Messi at his peak

    • Yep. Footballers start as early as 16-17. Mbappe is leading against Haaland right now, but he's nearing 25 and he's still at PSG. Haaland has some time to catch up, but he's missing quite some games with injuries lately. Both of them have something against them. Remember, this comparison is solely between Haaland and Mbappe. There are obviously many good footballers around, like Jude, Vini, Musiala, Rodrygo...

No player falls into more than 2 different main attributes of a well rounded player as the greatest or one of top 3 but Messi. Passing, assisting, playmaking, goalscoring, dribbling etc... Messi easily falls into at least top 3 of all those attributes in the history of football. Yes, it's possible to see another player with one or two of those attributes better than Messi. But no player with all those packages combined with a high and pecfect efficiency better than Messi will come along. As well as being much similar to Maradona when it comes to magic, Messi has more than the double of goals and assists recorded by Maradona. And to cap it all, Messi's longevity and consistency speak for themselves. No player like Messi(let alone better than him) will ever exist especially with the current trend of football where fanboys and fangirls are only obssessed with raw statistics, where pure strikers are seen better players than well-rounded players.

Messi is similar to Maradona in the style of playing of football and the comparison stops there. He didn't get Messi's career, raw stats, titles, longevity and consistency. Messi is a highly enhanced version of Maradona in almost every aspect of the game. That's why he's the greatest of all time. Ronaldo between 06/07 to 09/10 was a top 5 or top 3 dribbler in the world. And between 10/11 to 13/14 he was a top 5 to top 10 dribbler in the world. Ronaldo has MANY goals with both his strong and non dominant foot from 25+ meters out. Cristiano's range of pass and vision (once again with both feet) also FAR exceeds the levels of Mbappe and Haaland. The final point is that Ronaldo actually tracked back and pressed heavily for the majority of his career which is something NONE of the other players in this video ever did or do now. It was only in the second half of the 15/16 season when Zidane replaced Rafa Benitez that Ronaldo was no longer required to drop back to defend (except on corners which Ronaldo tracks back for even in the twilight of his career). It's not even an argument. I don't think Mbappe and definitely not Haaland will ever come close to Ronaldo and Messi. It's not a diss to them, but the bar is just so high. He wore the number 7 shirt for a reason because he would play and fill in the void of David Beckham (a midfileder) and people say he doesn't track back but he only stopped tracking back after the 2006 world cup. He played rm in his breakout season but was much more focused on goals and winning games. And because of that sir Alex took him out of midfiled and gave him freedom making him a rw or rm sometimes and even cf sometimes. Visibility, before many players with potential sould go unoticed, either because of home country conditions or other, but now most good players get snatched at a very young age...that's why football is as competitive as ever, the world cup was a proof of that seeing black horses all over, north kora / japan/ saudia / morroco...and with all the hype and the rise of quality of players haaland and mbappe still outshines the rest of them...the only problem is the longevity, however with the science behind football today, everyone has a blue print for a longer career, so yeah haaland and mbappé will for sure at the very least reach the heights of ronaldo and messi
