Is it possible to run a chateau without relying on outside income such as weddings, bed and breakfast or corporate events? Today we show you how we're using ancient knowledge and modern technology to create a financially and environmentally-sustainable chateau estate. We also make a big announcement about how we're going to continue on our journey so watch through to the end!
We are Marc, Amy, Clement and Juliette, a French-English family restoring a 33 room medieval chateau and huge estate in southern France. Follow our award-winning, historically-sensitive restorations and our journey towards self-sufficiency and sustainability, with plenty of laughter along the way.

    • @The Great Chateau Restoration Project That is so weird. I think it is one of your best videos. I used to make videos and had a brand strategy company. Maybe the shift in tone was a surprise. Don't give up.

  • What a brilliant idea, to have a seperate channel for other projects! Im really impressed with your resourcefulness and fortitude! Hopefully you get more subscribers when they learn of all your great alternative ideas for becoming self-sufficient! Good for you! As a 70 yr old great grandma from the USA, I find it appalling how wasteful weve become here. I'm like the only one in a huge family who recycles everything, and have for yrs. And try to live without plastic, almost impossible but im making headway! Very happy for this most informative video,,brilliant ❤😊 Esp love the wood-chipping furnace, wow. Never heard of that before.

    • I'm a bit younger than you and also from a large family - and I'm the only one that reuses, recycles, and buys carefully. What will happen when we are gone? I hope there is a reincarnation of the sustainable lifestyle we looked toward in the 1960s and 1970s. Remember The Whole Earth Catalog? I remember making water-heated solar panels in high school...

  • 2 smart people who I really admire, reading about the past isn't a thing people want to do, but even when life changed, the way to go is be self sustainable, especially on such a large estate. But most people do not have castle, chateau or mansion And you having water is like I already said once: its like having gold. Can't wait to hop by some day in the future on our way to the Ardeche.

Initially a huge undertaking but the research you are doing is really great supportive information to make the tasks go smoothly. You have obviously put a lot of thought into the planning of your systems, and it’s quite fascinating to get glimpses into what you’ve done so far. I find your videos so much more realistic than many others out there, and you deserve great success. I love seeing Clemente and Juliette as they are growing. Clemente was such a little guy when we began watching. Is he more like his dad, or you? And Juliette has teeth and a beautiful smile! She’s so adorable! Keep on producing videos as you are able, and don’t rob yourself of joy by comparing yours to others.

Seeing so many chateaus try to run as hotels, B&B's and event venues is fine, however your holistic view is fantastic and should be commended. • Fascinating historical episode... yet it also just makes so much 'modern' sense to simply use the resources that are already available to you! Your Chateau Estate is truly blessed with so many of these. Can't wait to see how you harvest these in an environmentally responsible way. I can tell you from my own experience (even in the suburbs of a big city) that my previously unused roof area is now providing for free (after PV installation costs, of course) nearly 2X the total annual energy used by my household of four energy hungry people. ie: I get credit from the power company! Soon, an EV will soak up some of that extra capacity as I will further reduce costs by eliminating my weekly petrol bills too! On a property like yours.... the sky is the limit.

I love your vision; I tried to live sustainably in the 70s. It was very "The Good Life." 😂 But, it worked well and I was almost self-sufficient with fruits and veg, and grew enough to sell to cover other costs.
