  • There are 45,000 castles in France, unfortunately, it is very difficult for us to renovate and maintain such a large number of properties. Thank you so much for coming to France to help us preserve this heritage.

  • At last. Less emotion, drama and pseudo show business than the postings from other chateau owners. So thanks for an intelligent, interesting and educational experience. A well worthwhile watch.

    • Yes, Chateau de Gudanes in the Pyrenees is a case in point. After five years still no restoration of the facade but plenty of gushing about the chabby chique crumbling interior. All by rich trendy people who think its all so elegant in its decaying state.

  • I know how much it costs to save a minor chateau. This is a national treasure chateau! Big difference! Many were big plantation houses, French style with farms that supported them. Then there are chateaus like yours. Ultra rich people’s homes. I would never attempted such a project as I have close friends who divorced over way smaller Reno’s. I hope through the government and grants you will get the money you need, over time, off course to save this “Real” chateau. I admire you being able to break it into smaller bites. That in itself is a talent! I won’t live long enough I’m afraid to see it finished. But I wish you all the very best!

  • I would have had my doubts about this place, but with the French historical architectural grants behind you, anything becomes possible! It is still a monumental task! You are well on your way! I hope you are able to save the 💒 chapel! The place is magnificent! Cheers! Thomas!

    • video so very interesting but 'well on the way'? does not sound like it. a shame too much ruin in the bldgs on this property. Whoever voted to allow this as a historic site must have been bribed by all the contractors who will charge a fortune to line their pockets next 100 years.

Pauvre homme... triste homme... homme?

    • With consistency, love & dedication it will get done. It will take a colossal amount of money to maintain it, but with the restoration at least the next holders/residents (we all residents in this thing called life...here for a "short" while & to the earth we return) will be getting it in great restored condition.

  • The garment ... emotional 🤍 ... as are the letters. Imagine a global effort to restore our collective past - these precious buildings and ruins. Transformation and healing comes of it. Such a different pathway to politics (I had to say it - Australian here - however moving to Europe too). Your story here, accentuated by your beautiful choice of music, is so touching. Yes your lives are the restoration - ongoing - and I would too. The idea of passing on is comforting - to family, community and France. A legacy. I hope to secure two properties in Slovenia that will need restoration. I watch you, and others, with much respect. Of course I look forward to visiting in the not too distant future. Purnon is so fortunate that you found her.

  • So, you need labour's. I know a few veterans who could be taken off the streets of the country near their. They only look for a roof over their head and some simple work. What a way to renovate a gardeners house and save a vet. Think about it. Good for both. I can't wait to see what is next. Great work so far at conversation and restoration.

  • The outbuildings could be renovated first and turned in guest cottages that people could rent for the weekend, thus generating some income for the renovation of the main house. The remnants of wallpaper and fabric could be also a source of revenue, their designs could be licensed and reproductions could be manufactured and sold under the license agreement to designers or directly to the public.

  • Outstanding presentation on the connection between Château de Purnon and FOUR wars of the 19th and 20th centuries! You covered four wars! I especially appreciated your digging into the First World War. Many people would have stopped their research with, "The front was hundreds of miles away, so no impact," but Tim dug deep and learned about the military service of the son of the Marquis. The story about the war in Indochina was fascinating and eloquently described, the German newspapers from the summer of 1940 were extremely cool, and the story about the court martial of the soldier from the Franco-Prussian War will delight visitors to the Château for decades to come! Thank you for this information.

  • You should have the suitable oak trees logged and rough cut for the future use. It will take a couple years for them to season (air dry) so they can be used in the restorations to come. Stone walls can be restored enough to keep them from failing. Many many holes in the dice that need fingers to stop the leaks I'm sure. I admire your commitment and support you.

And also think it's such a pity, it seems to be usually left to foreigners to save the heritage of La France. I can imagine the fun you are are going to have in doing it, the things you will learn, and beauty you will behold as each part comes back together. Slightly envious, although i'm happy having a smaller project, in France, much more modest, that i will see the end of. Looking forward to a visit at some point.

  • As a fashion historian i was thrilled to see the fragile garment you found in the fabric room and evem though i didn´t see it first hand i can already tell how old it is :D the shape of the sleeves, the waist form and the long down dropping shoulder line indicate that it was made between 1840 - 1860. worn over a bell shaped gown with a full skirt over several layers of starched petticoats if not a crinoline hoop skirt (but these came late in 1856 - 1869ish) ... the lady might have combined it with a spoon bonnet and a silk parasol. if you google ladies fashion of the time I´m sure you will come across some fabulous fashion plates in which you can find similar garments. (here is a thought: take it to a tailor and ask to make a copy of the pattern - tailors can craft you a wearable replica for display or special occasions 🤩)

    • Yes! Late 1860s, I think. It looks like a bodice and over-skirt which would have had a coordinating underskirt worn over a crinoline and/or early bustle. I collect 1850s-1860s clothing, so this was especially exciting to see!

      @kimberlyearly8918@kimberlyearly8918 Жыл бұрын
    • @@kimberlyearly8918 I have not watched any of the other videos so I am not sure. I have a place that I am restoring and sometimes a good portion of a place might not be up to snuff but good enough to live in. It maybe actually better than what other are accustom too. As long as it doesn't have black mold, rats, and bees nests you might overlook a crack in some window glass or doors that don't close. Chateau de Purnon is so beautiful that I could put up with a great deal of dust just to spend a couple nights there. The stories they will have over the next 15 years will be worth putting up with the faded wallpaper and cracked plaster. I'm in the process of restoring a much smaller house for sure. When I remodeled my kitchen I used a hot plate, microwave, and a toaster oven. The most important room is a bathroom. As long as you got hot water and the tub, sink and toilet are not gross it is not a big deal. An old ball claw iron tube is nice, and a funky old sink is fine as long as you don't have separate down spots in the sink.

  • Even with all the work to do the Chateau de Purnon takes my breath away. What it was, in my mind, and what will be, is overwhelmingly stunning and doesn’t seem real but a fantasy. I know it and all the exhausting work is very real to you both! Thank you for including us in the journey ❤. I live in the US and would love to see it someday.

    • Thank you for your comment and your interest in our journey. We are thrilled to share our adventure with people from around the world. If you travel to France from time to time, we are are always open for the weekend of Les Journees du patrimoine (Heritage Open Days) in September. This is a wonderful time to visit. We open as much of the chateau as possible, the weather is normally good, the grounds are carefully prepared and there are many activities and displays by our craftsmen, local bakers etc.

  • Hello to both you lovelies & also to your gorgeous furry kid. Not many would have the courage to take this huge step forward, to simply follow one’s dream. Thankfully you both decided to go ahead & oh my … what a dream come true. From the very beginning when your keys were handed over I could already imagine how unique your chateau would eventually look. The glow in your eyes reveal to me that we have so much to look forward to. With your intellect, positive energy & stamina to move forward I’m looking forward to continuing your journey. The one thing this chateau has that makes it all so worthwhile is the love of life that reflects in each room wether it is finished or not, you don’t need much of a imagination to see the beauty it adorns. No matter how hard the decisions become, who gets the hard work going or what monetary means it will take to complete, its your dedication for each other that will get you across the finish line, making it all wonderfully worthwhile. The last I’d like to say to you both is this…. Be proud, be very VERY proud. 💐

  • The exterior looks more like the end of the 17th century rather then the 18th century. The high arch of the roof and the stone work and design of the windows all look more like 17th century. I am sure you know more than I do and it would nice to understand why the house was built this way at the end of the 18th century. Thank you for sharing all your wonderful work and dedication to this project. The world needs more people like you. Thank you.

  • When we asked what the plan was. I don't think we meant a plan like you described. It was more about what are the priorities. Obviously, the roof first. Then what? Will you want to do more interior rooms? More foundational work like electrical and plumbing like you mentioned. Or saving the stables and chapel?

    @rachbryant@rachbryant Жыл бұрын
    • I think due to the building's heritage status, it's hard to have an organised plan. Each step requires research, waiting for an answer from the government, etc. Seems like many things will be happening simultaneously.

    • @M. M. I felt they had made that clear. Maybe i haven't been clear. I meant a list of what ideally THEY want to prioritise. They are in charge of starting the investigative work after all. The timeline after that of course cannot be known. But surely they know as an overview what their priorities are and where they will put their budget first?

    • We are in the process of completing an internal diagnositc and floor plan so we have a clear idea of what will be the use of each room. Once this is completed we can start working on the plumbing & electricity - especially on the ground and first floors.

  • This has got to be a lifetime undertaking and i really that you shall accomplish all that you wish to restore this grand old lady to her former state. Thank you for saving the French patrimoine and history. I was really happy to learn that you will restore the château in the style of Louis XVI.
