Even in the barbaric old-school era, Roberto Duran was renowned as the most terrifying slayer of people’s hopes. He forged a path to becoming the greatest lightweight of the 20th century and headlined the pivotal confrontations in the history of boxing. Today, we delve into the epic story of the 'Hands of Stone'.
I met Roberto in the late 70s in Miami at a quality Inn. He used to stay in when he was in town. I used to work there one night after work at the bar called parrots lounge. He was there and I made a compliment about a gold chain he was wearing. He took it off and gave it to me. I still have it till this day. Roberto, if you read this, it’s Omar always thinking about you. You are fantastic person.

I met Roberto Duran during a trip to Panama in 2008. My taxi driver said he was always available (while in town) to talk to anyone who showed up to his door. Naturally, I thought this was bullshit but to my surprise when we pulled up to his pad he was outside talking to numerous people. The taxi driver then introduced me and I had an amazing 5 mins conversation with him. I also used to box in Los Angeles and knew one of Roberto's old sparring partners (Randy Shields). Ill never forget that moment. Even though my spanish was limited he still took time to talk to me. Great man inside and out the ring.
Why everyone always had "amazing 5 mins conversation" with celeb they met. It is just a white lie I bet.

June 20th 1980 My 18th birthday Went to the Akron Civic Theatre To watch my favorite boxer Roberto Duran The greatest night of my life After college I fought in the Golden Gloves 3 years later became a pro boxing judge. Had a chance to judge Hands of Stone ( he won) in my home town I have been sitting ringside in two states since 1989 Roberto you will always be THE BEST !!!!!
Duran could do everything. Fought like a brute with the mind of a professor. Brilliant.
He dealt with his grief by helping destitute children. What a beautiful soul.
Haven't gotten to that part of the video yet, but now I'm definitely looking forward to it. I don't know much about Duran outside of his in-ring accomplishments, so this ought to be good.

That part definitely hit me hard than he hit most of his opponents. The man grew up in a friggen doorway. Of course in his deepest moments he’d wander the streets of a city buying destitute children anything they wanted.

What Duran did for De Jesus, regardless of thinking that he might catch aids, at that time, shows the straight up courage that man has!
a real man from any angle. unlike some that go in the ring to clown around. His fortitude matched his built-in sense of pride, thus his decision to stop a charade of a fight and not allow more humiliation ( he had irresponsively gotten out of shape leading up to that match gaining like 40 lbs that he had to get rid of fast!). not healthy. The most spectacular fighter EVER!

I met Roberto Duran in 1989, the year of his rebirth and vindication with his panamanian public, after all his greatest triumphs and falls when no one gave any hope of success. At 37 years old, I still remember that night, he snatched the middleweight title from Iran Brakley, twice his size, reach and age. Great guy, I will never forget the legend Hands of Stone.
I think that was one of the greatest fights of all time, DURAN was magical and is my favorite of all time!
We were going through Jungle Training in Panama when I was in the army in 84. It was the year the Raiders beat the Washington Redskins in the Super Bowl as I remember watching it after our training was complete. Some of my army buddies asked me to go to Panama City with them to the casinos that weekend and I turned them down and just watched the Super Bowl in the barracks with some other guys. When they returned they told me they met Roberto Duran in one of the casinos. I was so pissed at myself for not going with them.

Roberto Duran was a true warrior and loved for his kindness and goodness by those he touched.
Wow, I did not know how incredible Roberto Duran was!, he is a true boxing legend!
Some thought he was arguably the greatest ever along with Salvador Sanchez, and of course Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson, until he was beaten by Leonard, Hearns, and Hagler in the 1980s and given all he could handle by Iran Barkley.
Despite Duran's reputation as a terrifying fighter Duran had a heart of gold. He is all class!
80’s baby(42-Tyson ish) era. I hear of these guys growing up and always had a love for the sport. This day and age and even the 90’s did not have fighters like this. Thought for a min the current HW division had it til all the BIG guys had L’s then did nothing with it to be in a class of the 4 kings. What an era to see. Not sure that style fighting will ever be seen again in such pure (lost for a word) athletic and beautiful boxing dominance. 1 word couldn’t do it. I am not a boxer but in comparison to yesterday, this age appears more aware(injury) and less abusive in speaking with their hands. Thankful at the same time I just don’t believe we ever see that again.

A severe oversimplification, but KZhead lost the lengthier reply I wrote before. Duran was set up to lose, entered the ring in no shape to compete nor could he have been on the unprecedented short time frame for a big fight that Bob Arum demanded and, while most including myself don't agree with his decision, one can. See aman of pride like Duran finding himself unable to compete with his inferior such as Leonard, wadhing his hands of it rather than give the inferior an apparent legit win.

Also Pacquiao defeating many legendary boxers that having a big names in boxing multiple times like Dela Hoya, Marquez, Morales, Barrera, Hatton, Bradley, Mosley, Cotto, Margarito.

Had Duran fought Hagler for 12 rounds as Ray, he would of got the win. And at this time Marvin was still Marvelous.
Duran was forced against Ray 2 and Tommys fights.

This is one of if not the best boxing doc I’ve ever seen. Roberto Duran is the embodiment of a true boxing champion. He really did perform for the people. Over 120 pro fights?! No modern fighter will do that. They are divas. Roberto made himself available in a day when the only way for him to be seen was on tv. A true fighter and performer under the bright lights.

Born in '64 im greatful to have been able to see boxing before May Jr. changed the sport. It was really an exciting sport.
I agree with you, back then boxers were masters at their craft, nowadays they are mostly clowns/showmen, it is a disgrace that the sport evolved into what it is now.
Roberto duran was a brilliant boxer. What he achieved was quite phenomenal really. He had a sensational career before the likes of Leonard, hearns , hagler came along , and even though he was older, still showed his brilliance. Duran is up there with any boxer that ever lived , he was truely one of the greatest.

Thank you for your introspective thoughts about the guy. I would say his recovery after Sugar Ray loss was most remarkable for me because like Hagler I thought he'd hung them up, nope he got back in and I think he was waiting for Sugar Ray to come back so he could finish where he left off(we all know Sugar Ray wanted no part in a healthy battle ready Duran), his last fight he was 50 years old and he lost to a gifted fighter in the late Camacho.

I boxed when I was young and followed this era of boxers, having said that i knew Duran would lose the rematch. The rematch was made too quickly ( 3 mo. later ) Duran partied from the night he won until the night before the rematch, I knew he should've waited for at least a year to get the win out of his system and get hungry for training again. After the first fight and his win, there were an estiamted 200K panamanians waiting for his plane to land as well as lining the streets. He was a national heroe and he partied like one! Kudos to the Leonard camp for requesting an immediate rematch.
This narrating is TOP TIER. YOU'RE REALLY GOOD AT THIS MAN AND PLEASE CONTINUE!! Hopefully one day you can be on ESPN doing a sports documentary such as these bangers you put out.
I love stumbling across these legendary boxers in videos just like this on KZhead, i dont know why but every thing 25 plus years ago is so much better than this day and age, from music, movies, sports, dating, everyday life, its was all so much better, im a 70’s kid so i can speak to the decades believing the 90’s peaked in every aspect of life, maybe its the internet, i dont know, but we had less back then, a family holiday was a trip to the local beach, no mobile phones, most families had 1 car, kids rode bikes and wouldn’t be found in their bedroom if the weather was good, heck even when it was full on storm outside we where outside in it seeking shelter in a hut we had built. Videos like this just bring back how much better life was back then, certainly for me. Duran was a monster in the ring by the look of him, deadly! I certainly can appreciate it when legends like Tyson who i got to watch growing up come out with the admiration for fighters like Duran, tells you exactly how special he was! Thanks for your efforts with this video, i will be subscribing and looking through your back catalogue and sense im going to love them!

Barney Ross was just as great. He just didn't have the advanced training methods that Duran had...nor the Press Coverage and audulation.
Benny Leonard was better. Undefeated as a lightweight over 19 years.
Marciano was never beaten. He is better than Duran in the pound for pound voting. So is Sugar Ray Robinson. He fought way more matches than duran. And...Marciano never quit in the ring.@@DemocratsReadMyBio

I had the Honor of meeting Mr Duran in Panama City when I lived there . A good friend of mine and I went to his Bar and had a few beers and laughs with him .One of the most humble men I've ever met .

In todays society that emphasises Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity many people have a hard time with the fact that Marciano...(a White Heavyweight) was better than Tyson....(A convicted Rapist) Marciano never lost but with todays political climate he is very often not listed among the best Heavyweights.
Me too. Since i was a little kid i use to watch boxing fights with my dad. My mom also liked to watch boxing. I remember "mano de piedra" Duran and one of the finest i have ever seen in my life : Sugar Ray Leonard. I was a kid then but can never forget this era. It was the best for me.

I remember, as a kid, the whole country of Panama come to a halt every time "El Cholo", as we Panamanian call him, would fight. My chest swells with pride seeing this video. Thank you Cholo for all the good memories. 1 in a million without a doubt!!! Qué viva Panamá y El Cholo Durán, carajo!!

Thank you for this doc. It has given me a new appreciation of Duran, not just as a fighter, but for the man, that I never had before. As a kid, I was as huge Sugar Ray Leonard fan!! I watched him wln the Olympic gold when I was 10!! He was my favorite fighter after Ali. So, when Duran beat him, i hated him, he was the villain! The embodiment of evil. Which was how boxing was frequently marketed then. You have shown us the flip side of that image: the real life man that was behind the legend.
This guy is a beast. Pure inspiration for those who need to start all over. Thank you, Duran. Another incredible video from the channel.
Robert Duran was the toughest around when I was kid. A hero to me!
This was the best era of boxing, in my lifetime anyway as I am 66. Roberto Duran, Alexis Arguello, and Marvelous Marvin Hagler are still my favorite all time fighters to this day. None of the fighters today could touch these guys. Had Duran took better care of himself and trained year-round without alcohol and too much food he probably would have never lost. Salvador Sanchez was another one of my favorites, too bad we lost him so young. He was only 24 I think when he died in a car crash. He is still one of the greatest ever also.

My mom was not friends with Duran but knew him. My family and his are from the same little village in Panama. She said that he never forgot the poverty he came from and always helped. He also helped another homeless man who was the only one to help him on the streets of El Chorillo. I don't know how true it is but she said Duran would not fight his first fight in NY unless that homeless guy that helped him was flown in to be there.

I am panamenian and I can affirm that this story is true. The homeless guy nickname was Chaflán. He did took Chaflán to one of his important fight in USA. Duran never forgot Chaflán till his friend passed away....

The best boxing documentary I have ever seen Duran was always one of my all time favorites
Duran was demon! Anyone who got in the ring with him and said they weren't intimidated by that devilish snear he always had on his face is lying. He truly wanted to hurt you in that ring. But beyond his wicked and ferocious demeanor was the secret to his long lasting success as a fighter: he was an elite boxer. Duran was an exceptional defensive fighter with precise counter measures programmed into his every move in the ring. Shoulder roles, riding with punches and counters assaults every time you thought you were on the attack, you found out you had just stepped in it! Pound for pound, he is arguably the best pure fighter I've ever seen in my 64 years!!!!

I was in Marine Corps boot camp when Duran fought Leonard the first time. The next day our DI asked us if we wanted to know the result! When he announced Duran as the winner I was so excited - on the inside, of course. Duran was my favorite fighter at the time. His movement, counter punching abilities, and inside fighting were a thing of beauty. Fun to watch.

He was the devil in lightweight, and went up to middle and welter, to fight to Hearnz, Sugar and Hagler. And still fight until 2001.
There's is record of Duran fighting in 1967 68,69,and all the way to 2001 that's an amazing stretch
Saw him training few days before a fight in Nuevo Jordan Gym (Mex), he grew a belly and was far from his prime. At the end of sack box training he threw one fast and strong last punch to the sack hanging from one of the bulilding beams, barely moved the sack box... but the building was shaking and the punch sounded almost like a explosion. Then I knew why he was called "manos de piedra" (stone hands)

Was my favorite fighter as a kid. My dad was old school and loved the fact I liked one of his favorites. We watched him win over Barkley at 37. One of my favorite memories as a youngin.

The greatest lightweight boxer ever! The closest I’ve ever seen anyone come to Duran in longevity and intensity is Pacquiao. What a dream match THAT would be!

I would kill to see them fight at 140. Funny Pacquiao only fought once there. But I think it was his best weight. Absolutely machine and a devastating puncher at rhat weight
The golden age of boxing loved every minute of that as a kid.
To me I see a man with an iron core. He's linking every punch to his core effortlessly. Amazing natural talent.
Duran NEVER punched himself out. Never got tired. Suge frustrated him, but Duran never got tired.
Duran gassed out badly against Hagler at the half way mark. Had that not been the case, he would have won that fight. Hagler only took it by a point on my card.
Just read "I am Duran", and it's amazing how brutal the reaction to him quitting in the rematch with Leonard was..... it's like in one instance everyone forgot who the hell this guy was and everything he'd accomplished... there's a funny bit though where he says that Johnny Carson said he was going to ask Roberto to sing the 12 days of Christmas, but was afraid he'd stop after 8..............ouch. But man, what a beast.... oh, the books well worth checking out too, if you don't know it

Get you're ass in gear, little while later I slacked off again, he took off a leather sole shoe and commenced to beating across back and head I didn't have on a shirt on either, I was about 12 years old, he screamed, this ain't shit, Roberta durans father whipped him with a leather jump rope and that helped make him a champion!

After watching this video I read Hands of Stone and, Roberto Duran has a chapter where he explains how his father would make him jump rope at the top of a mountain for agility training whilst he would yell at him to “dodge” mid jump rope as he threw bricks at him. If he didn’t dodge successfully, he would be beat with a switch-that was basically a log. That’s why his chin is so powerful and his slips are so sharp in the ring 🥊
Duran x S Ray Leonard, the first fight probably was the best fight I've ever seen. It was spetacular, both agressive all the time, a very dinamic fight.
That is my all time favorite fight. I was 13 years old and an amateur boxer myself. I was a fan of both but Duran was my favorite fighter. The fight more than lived up the the hype. They fought hard but with an amazing amount of skill. Every round was just about non stop action.
That one and The War are so unbelievably awesome. Can't imagine doing that.
@@WonderDerek The War was the best 3 rounds ever. I just wish it would have been a little more than 3 rounds. But at that pace it would not have been possible for it to last many more rounds.

This is the first time I hear about this great Boxer. After watching this video and reading comments here, I have to say not only he was a great boxer (probably greatest light weight boxer of all times) but he is a true gentleman. What a generous, humble and kind soul. God bless Mr Duran.
Thank you for this brilliant documentary on arguably the greatest Lightweight champion in history. Duran absolutely dominated and terrorized that division like no other. I'm pained to point out that the narrator is mistaken that Duran jumped from 135 to 147 implying it was his first outing to the division. Duran often fought above the 135lb division in between title defenses. He even fought Ezequiel Obando at 154 which is proper Junior Middleweight when he still held the Lightweight title. He had had many fights at Junior Welterweight and Welterweight long before relinquishing his 135lb title to campaign at 147.

He took a punch and closed in on the fighters, mono to mono. Tough fighter who could land a punch who could let his opponent feel like they were hit with a sledge hammer. Man he sure threw a powerful punch.

Maybe even the best. Considering his size and reach. He is certainly the smartest/quickest multitasker i have ever seen. There are other smart boxers sure, but they are focussing on one thing at the time, think and strategise. This guy just did everything at the same time. I think he was truly made to be a fighter. I am so happy to be alive and able to admire legends like him.
I have never seen a person jump rope like Roberto. He had his knees bent and jumped in a crouch. Amazing.

He came back from defeat/being called a has been multiple times. What a fighter.
What an unbelievable career. In this modern era (just like no one will ever remotely approach Cy Young's record of 511 pitching victories), nobody will ever come close to participating in 119 boxing BRAWLS like Duran did. So unfortunately, there will never be another fighter who fully compares to him. My hat goes off to you, Roberto. You are the ultimate boxing warrior of all time.

Roberto Duran was a great fighter, he was his on enemy, gaining weight, and not being in shape and staying in shape.
