The BRDM-1 (Bronirovannaya Razvedyvatelnaya Dozornaya Mashina, Бронированная Разведывательная Дозорная Машина, literally "armored reconnaissance/patrol vehicle") is a Soviet amphibious armored scout car. It was the first purpose-built Soviet reconnaissance vehicle to enter service since the BA-64 and was built on the chassis and drive train of the BTR-40 armored personnel carrier.
The primary advantage of the BRDM-1 at the time of its introduction was its amphibious capability, which was the main shortcoming associated with its BTR-40 counterpart. Another unique feature of the vehicle's design were two pairs of chain-driven auxiliary wheels, which could be lowered to provide additional traction on muddy terrain. The BRDM-1 was manufactured from 1957 to 1966, at which time 10,000 had entered service with the Soviet Union and its military allies around the world. It was thereafter superseded by the improved BRDM-2, which possessed greater amphibious capabilities, a more powerful engine, and a fully enclosed turret.

The belly wheels are a feature on all stock BRDM2s. They are made for crossing trenches.
MATSIMUS! Thanks for doing this on my favorite series of wheeled Russian vehicles. I’ve owned two of them. My current one is a Czech model in pristine shape. They’re superb vehicles with good mobility. They have a good gun, either a 14.5/7.62 or a 7.62mm turret. Some models carried ATGM models. They are pretty quick, easy to drive, decent visibility. I paid 16k for the first one and 40 for the second one. They’re a blast to drive, imagine a very heavy truck. When you push the clutch in you lost power steering. Quite the head turner! The front is rated to stop .50 at a few hundred meters, the sides .30 cal. Hit me up if you’re in the southern United States and we will go for a drive.
As a former U.S. Cav officer in the late 90's and early 2000's, I had a special opportunity to train on former East Block equipment so that we could act as OPPFOR for training. Specifically, we had BRDM-2, BMP-2, and T-72s. The BRDM was always fascinating to me because I thought it superior to our HMMWVs due to its armor, firepower, and amphibious ability. HMMWVs at this time were not up-armored and were mostly unarmed. Here's what I discovered: specs are one thing on paper and another in real life. o The armor made the vehicle too heavy. We had to "rescue it" many times b/c our drivers traversed it over terrain that was okay for HMMWVs and got stuck. o I don't trust it for one second for its amphibious capabilities. The video footages are short and controlled. If you actually worked the vehicle hard in the field and saw the quality of its construction, you would not want to test that capability either. o The turret traverse is manual, as shown in the footage. What the video doesn't show is how difficult it is to traverse the turret in just normal conditions and extremely challenging if the vehicle is on any sort of incline/decline. The gunner has to fight against the weight of the gun and the turret against gravity. This renders the weapon ineffective in any role other than providing suppressive fire in a prepared, defensive position; which is contrary to its offensive role as part of Divison/Regimental Recon. In short, I thought they were death traps. Of course, this is one person's opinion, and the vehicle may have improved since.

Imagine being a Bundswehr soldier defending the Rhine (west side), blowing up all of the bridges, thinking the enemy can’t get across, until they see an army of BTR’s, T-72’s and BRDM’s charging across the water.
There were few cars called "Żbik" (Polish for Wildcat) basically an end of XX variant of heavily modernized BRDM 2 made in Poland. The Polish Army deployed it to missions in Iraq, and Chad. It served in the role of the scout car. All of those were propelled by a modern turbo-diesel engine made by IVECO. Also equipped with air-conditioning system and as well as some modern optics, displays, radio, navigation, etc Kind of embarrassment to see it working in 2004, but hey, worked well. None were involved in enemy contact.
Probably the best Recce vehicle of the Cold War: quick, good in any terrain and armed with an effective weapon ( 14.5mm is basically equivilant to 20mm NATO). Beats the Scorpion/Scimitar and Wiesel by the ability to float. Also, looks pretty badass...
I think the lack of a powered turret holds it back between those other vehicles. Cranking handles to get on target with no stabilization can be a bear of a task. I would love to see a modernized version using aluminum and composite armor, a . 50 cal Kord on an RWS, with a Kornet launcher. Thermals, smoke launchers, drone launching platform, and a crew of 3 with 2 dismounts. The shape and configuration of the vehicle makes sense, it just needs to be modernized. Another great scout car is the Panhard VBL similar capabilities, but lighter, faster, and more modern.
I served as OPFOR at NTC in the mid nineties , we had 3 of these in the company , I was in an Anti Tank company , we would put TOW systems on top of these which made it top heavy and a little cumbersome to drive safely , top speed was slow, I had also seen other vehicles of Russian decent that we used , MTLB's and also MT-100 anti tank cannon , great stuff
The system continues to shine when used as a gun truck/technical in Iraq and Syria. Especially with a atgm, kpv, 12.7, auto grenade launcher, or recoiless rifle. Nice to see you upload.

I seriously adore the BRDM in Arma. It's always been super useful for scouting and providing infantry light armored support. No complaints on my end since it does it's job super well. I also quite like the ATGM version for ambushes and engaging enemy buildings from outside a town in support of infantry.

I remember getting lectures of warsaw pact IFVs while serving. The instructors mentioned these vehicles as most likely the first we would see if the balloon went up over in west Germany.

Sebastian Larsen I started in CFB Calgary with the lord Strathcona’s horse then CFB Gagetown, New Brunswick then over to West Germany 1976 to 1996 when I retired.
The Poles deployed modernised AT versions of these in Iraq, they apparently had an engagement with Iraqi ones. In Afganistan Soviet BRDM 2s were often used to carry troops(4x bloke sitting on top) into contact (acting as a fast response) by recon units.

As far as I know, the BRDM, BTR, BMP, and most of the tanks starting with the T-55 had NBC filtration, and overpressure system (rubber gaskets and a small electric air pump sucking air in through a filter can) mounted as standard.
Yes, they by default come with NBC protection systems. BRDM were used during Chernobyl operation, and estimated % of radiation it's armor blocks is ~33%.
As reported in here earlier, BRDM's were also used in the Angolan Civil war by Cuban and Angolan troops. In addition, they saw action by the Cuban (and Ethiopian?) troops in the 1977-78 Ogaden war with Somalia. During that last conflict a number of BRDM's were airlifted together with BMD and ASU-57's by Mil 6 Hook helicopters behind enemy lines in the battle of Jijiga. In 2015, I encountered the remains of a rusted BRDM-2 at the roadside on the outskirts of Praia, the capital of the Cape Verdian Islands.

This bugger was a nightmare in the ARMA games, it could show up and kill my squad before I even knew it was there. But using it at the same time was awesome. Would love a BRDM but would settle for a GAZ-69.

My friend has one. I drove this several times. Old, but pretty cool. At the moment, however, this is a museum. Escape from the inside ... after being hit is practically impossible.

This probably one of the best scout cars made because the fact it was amphibious. But becuase it would mostly likely run into AP from M60 machine gun , M72 or .50 the crew will have to abandon it . It can be destroyed rather quickly becuase of its thin slice armor .
A very good vehicle being adapted to keep up with changing situations. The centre mounted wheels is a great advantage over anything I have seen in western scout vehicles.
All t-72s has ability to cross water and rivers on the bottom. Simply put, all vehicles made in east Europe are capable of river and water crossing, because it geography. Also, there is a ambulance variant.
Not just the East. Snorkel kits are pretty much standard for tanks in the West too. One notable difference is that Western snorkels are big enough that the crew can evacuate through it in the event of problems.

My dad's platoon had a BRDM-2 (chemical and biological special force in NVA) as a commandant car. NVA mean not the northern vietnamese army. NVA means in this case the east german popular army (nationale Volksarmee-NVA)
Umm...was he in the army when the Unification happened? I know of a few germans who moved to my city in Russia who where former NVA they mostly left germany because they lost their jobs in the NVA and they decided to move to my city(Yekaterinburg) to study they married Russian woman and now mostly russfied they work in the Russian police now!

@@elusive6119 Watched a documentary about what were still essentially tribesmen in the Ural's that had apparently acquired a selection of old APC's, trucks and half-tracks from the Russian Government in lieu of cash for some land-use lawsuit or another.They turned them into mobile kitchens and used them to haul their camp from summer to winter hunting grounds and back again. Pretty neat, because these guys were doing the same thing they'd been doing for centuries, following the caribou and fishing the lakes and streams...all while driving around a steampunk-looking collection of soviet hardware.
In terms of function I think its top of it's class compared to Humvee or other scout vehicle. it can shoot 14.5mm higher then the.50 cal and of course can go over water by swimming and provided ok protection for the role it does.
The 10 day war was the Slovenian war of independence from Yugoslavia. Compared to other Yugoslavian wars of independence, it had very low casualties.

4:04 Do you see that "apparatus"? This is the navigational system, which is suppose to be able to point to an azimuth and distance to a set of way points even if you do not follow the direct line rout. To use it, you first start the engine (1xGaz-55) then you start it and wait for 30 min so the internal gyroscope can reach up spin up to 30000rpm. Very cool. The engineers just forgot to account for moving Up-Down so on uneven terrain this device will give you up to 20% error.(Just immagine 20% error of 360degr) БРДМ-2 is slow, low powered, weakly armored, electronics are a total mess. The only good thing about is the forever favorite KPVT! BRDM means Boyevaya Razvedyvatelnaya Dozornaya Mashina. I challenge you to say this :)
Well to be honest, we are talking about 1960 BRDM-2 here. IF you put inside a combined GPS/GloNass/Galileo receiver, a com sat up-link, $12K Canon w. optics, IR optic-electron station, NBC protection, gun stabilization in the turret, modern digital processor powered AM/FM radio with 1kW gunn diode, add a 2008 Audi A8 4.5 diesel engine and you get quite well-educated reconnaissance machine. But yet again you can do the same to a BTR-80 for less ca$ and + 8 grunts... @tvercetti1
It's a very old vehicle at this point. The concept is still great and it would still work for another 20 years if upgraded everything to modern standards. For example, france basically built a modern BRDM-2 in the form of CRAB. There's a reason why almost every NATO APC is made to resist 14.5mm guns from frontal arc.

There are more modern variants of BRDM-2, but my point is they still cost as as much as BTR-80, and there is still more to be desired from the com/nav equipment and from the power plant. About the NATO APCs, well I get the distinguished imprecision that they are protected from 30mm auto-canons in the important areas. But if you are a well-educated Russian officer you use KPVT on the tires, you make a recognizance with fight, you use it on trucks and trenches. Still I can't see, why you won't just use a BTR..

As for being well-educated Russian officer; you wouldn't bother shooting if you can, because alerting the enemy to your presence means the intel you gathered can quickly depreciate in value. (also because simply shooting at tires doesn't guarantee anything - just about any apc tires are designed to be able to run while flat and missing 1 or 2 won't kill the mobility)
@@EcchiRevenge 1. No! You attack if you are tasked to. Otherwise you hide in the bushes and observe. 2. BRDM-2 is a crew of 5. A driver, a commander, a gunner , and 2 recognizance operatives. With this forces a well educated infantry officer can mount up an simulated attack to disclose an enemy positions, by killing the the forward machine gun and pushing froward until the main platoon positions are revealed. It's called an simulated attack recognizance. 3. Such intell will not depreciate in value if the enemy is defending an important object like a power station or a home town. Otherwise, they will retreat and no harm done! 4. If you manage to shoot 2 tires on the same side of a 4 wheeled vehicle, it guarantees that this vehicle will not travel anywhere, making it an perfect mark for the Matsimus guys. If the vehicle still manages to move, this guarantees presence of a stronger force, which is the idea of a recognizance. Then you sent the recce tank platoon with the infantry company, from the brigade/regiment, to see who-is-who.

There's one in Russia that's used as a taxi. These things cost under 10k shipped, only need basic mods to be street legal (rear facing/ side facing cameras), and have a top speed of 55-60 mph on the road which makes them highway compatible
And if there's ever an accident, you'll usually win.

About 8:20, the vehicle has white stripes on it. I have seen this on many Russian/Soviet vehicles. Can someone tell me what that kind of marking is for? Thanks!
its usually on non Russian vehicles actually. its when 2 states that have the same weapons fight eachother. take for instance Russia and Ukraine. a Russian BMP-2 will be in its normal green/olive drab camo. whilst the Ukrainian BMP-2's have these white markings added to them. this is done so they can differentiate between their own BMP-2's and Russian BMP-2's from a distance.

@@eb3279 i believe in world war 2. it was used by certain regiments. or divisions. as well as by users of Russian made tanks. that were not Russian. polish T-34's usually had white markings. captured vehicles in partisan use usually also had similar white markings applied to them. though im not so sure about WW2 myself. it might indeed be a pattern decided upon to make identification by friendly aircraft easier.

No, it would likely only use it's amphibious capability in smaller bodies of water (e.g. rivers, ponds, maybe lakes). If it were used in an amphibious assault (which it wouldn't be because it's a scout vehicle) it would be deployed from a landing ship closer to shore - not just travelling on it's own over 80 miles of superbly rough open water.

The BRDM-2 is capable of forcing rivers and lakes without preparation (the cruising range is 180 km). On the water, the car moves with the help of a propulsion jet installed in the stern. The four-bladed screw (500 mm impeller) sucks water through the suction inlet located in the bottom and throws it through the hole in the rear sheet of the hull. While driving on land, this hole is closed with a special armored damper. Reversing is provided by changing the direction of rotation of the screw. The devices for turning afloat are the water rudders located in the outlet of the jet propulsion unit.
