MINI Keeps Things Quirky With All-New 2024 Cooper
The iconic British city car enters its fourth generation with more tech but the same fun driving dynamics.
The MINI Cooper is back for 2024, continuing its decades-long tradition of offering cheeky styling and a quintessentially British driving experience in a right-sized city-friendly package. This all-new fourth-generation model promises more interior space and the latest technologies, but MINI fans will be relieved to know the automaker hasn't abandoned the car's playful personality.
Quirky, Upmarket Styling
At a glance, the 2024 Cooper seems instantly recognizable, retaining its stubby proportions and distinctive circular headlights. But a closer look reveals an edgier, more modern design with sharper creases and a larger glass area for improved visibility. The interior takes a stark minimalist approach, replacing traditional analog gauges with a large circular digital display.
While it's slightly larger than its predecessor, the Cooper remains a subcompact at heart with limited passenger space, especially for rear riders. But fold-down rear seats aid practicality, and the uncluttered cabin makes the most of the Cooper's tiny footprint.
Potent Engine Options
Buyers can choose between gasoline or electric motivation for their new MINI. The Cooper and Cooper S gasoline trims offer a punchy 156-hp 3-cylinder or 204-hp 4-cylinder turbo, respectively. Both are paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic - sorry enthusiasts, there's no manual gearbox this time.
The electric Cooper E gets a 184-hp motor with up to 190 miles of range, while the Cooper SE bumps output to 218 hp and can travel up to 250 miles per charge. A 95kW rapid charging option replenishes the battery from 10-80% in around 30 minutes.
MINI promises its iconic go-kart handling remains fully intact in this new generation. We'll have to get behind the wheel to confirm, but if history is any guide, the 2024 Cooper should serve up a healthy dose of driving thrills.
Premium, But Attainable Pricing
Pricing starts at $23,800 for the base gas model, with the electric Cooper E opening at $35,000 before incentives. While not exactly cheap for its size, the MINI delivers a premium look and feel that help justify the spend over mainstream subcompacts. Plus, its driving dynamics could make it worth the splurge for enthusiasts.
The MINI Cooper faces renewed competition from stylish new electric models like the Renault 5 and Fiat 500e. But if MINI has executed the redesign properly, the 2024 Cooper's unique personality should keep it a strong contender among fashionable city cars.
