We've lived w/an EV for 5 years now and can't wait to give up our hybrid(Prius) because we are tired of putting gas in it, oil changes, spark plugs....yada yada every few thousand miles. The only thing we had to have changed in our EV was THE INTERIOR HEPA FILTER and wiper blades after 50,000 miles and it was supposed to be 30,000.

We have to do an alignment and once in awhile bleed the brakes. Our windshield wipers actually have lasted 6 years, but we ceramic coat the windshield, which we suspect is the real reason they've lasted that long. It's sad that so many people are brainwashed by all the disinformation. EVs, at least from Tesla, are so easy. Updates come over the air, the cars keep getting better, we only have 8% battery degradation after 6 years and we've had suboptimal charging practices. These things are so much better than the crappy polluting ICE vehicles that it's not even funny.
What's the resale value on the EV vs an equivalent age Prius? For many EV's the dollars saved on servicing and fuel are more than offset through depreciation and insurance. How is the battery health now? What is the replacement cost of the battery in comparison to the car?
Once the 1000 km battery happens, PHEVs will be irrelevant.
So now your ev is 5 years old. What's the battery life like?. If you want to trade it in on a new ev what will they give you for your old car? Will you have to spend 50 to 60 grand for a new car after 5 to 10 years? I have a 2007 Toyota Tacoma truck. I paid 16000 for it 9 years ago. I have put 100k kms on it. Its worth 18000 now. I would like to see the trade in value of your ev after 16 years....

China attacked the Petrodollar directly by setting deals to purchase oil in different currencies too (mainly its own Renminbi, which it already uses for buying oil from Russia and Saudi Arabia).
China is not only reducing its petrodollar dependence, China is tackling its severe urban air pollution problem which is mostly due to ICEV emissions.

Agreed but Japan is far worse. Just got back from Tokyo and only saw one Tesla and a couple of other brands. I only saw two charging points. One near a main station and the other in a Freeway services area. Each one only had two chargers !

That could be a big problem for the nation, if the whole car industry will fall behind in a few years. Equally impressive is how gas cars are still outselling EVs and they always will, because people who are realistic about their cars do not want an EV and it will never fit their needs and lifestyle. And no amount of bitching from the governments will force people to buy one. The infrastructure is not there, and the governments are too slow to focus on building it. Because they want their money from gas companies so they will restrict EVs.

And when you add the fact some of these trucks have been in the lots for 2 years and are now starting to suffer lot rot, prices of a long way to fall before people will start buying these vehicles. It is amazing or unreal every time I went back to China in recent years, the quality of roads, fancy service stations, massive rapid charging stations, green number plates on the roads, the quiet of traffic, like in Shenzhen, there seems an invisible sound barrier between you and the traffic, absolutely unreal. Now the low attitude eVTOL start commercial route two weeks ago, no pilot, fully automatic low noise and comfort, just out of imagination. The speed of rolling out new models is way faster then we can approve them on the roads.
In 1990, California passed a law requiring 10% zero emission vehicles by 2003 (which was 21 years ago). There are now 31.3 million cars registered in California. The number of plug-in electric cars registered in the state in the past 10 years is 1.7 million. That's 1 in 20, or 5% and California is the state with the highest EV adoption rate ... by a HUGE margin.

Go to south east Asia, countries like Thailand and Indonesia. There are no rules against ICE cars, and EV charging stations are not as pervasive as in China. Yet there you can see sales of ICE cars tanking, but sales of EVs are surging. Brands like Tesla, BYD, and other Chinese brands are out selling all brands of ICE cars.
SEA is in a transition from ice to EV , just like the cellpphone to smartphone era.

Can't speak for Thailand but your Indonesia claims are 100% false. ICE car sales in Indonesia continue to be stable & many times multiple over EV car sales, which has just begun being introduced to the masses, in just a few of the big cities & in just the last couple of years, led mainly by Wuling's Air EV (introduced in 2022 & leader in EV sales) & Hyundai's Ioniq 5 (also launched in 2022 & helped made EV's popular). Teslas are very rare as they are only sold via 1 luxury car importer (no official dealerships or direct sales in Indonesia) & their cars are very expensive. BYD just started selling this year & no cars have even been delivered to customers yet. The other Chinese brands that just started selling EV's are Chery & Neta. Indonesia new car sales are a little over 1 million units in 2023 & EV's made up less than 20,000 units (so EV's were less than 2% of all new vehicle sales). On what basis & data sources were your claims based on?

@@morbid747 While I'm excited for EV's, they are just being introduced in Indonesia & priced significantly higher than their equivalent ICE counterparts. Hopefully they will take off eventually & reduce the horrible air pollution in big cities like Jakarta but, unless there's price parity, transition will be a lot slower than the Nokia to iPhone & Android phones timeframe.
I'm in Australia and ordered the 2024 model 3 performance on the day it was available to order, it won't be delivered for months though but I'm sick of fuel prices going up up up

This is only 28% of total NEV sales. At, 4:45, Sam says EV sales have grown 64% year-on-year in China. The only mention of 64% in the article is the aforementioned monthly sales of PHEVs. The only longer term EV trend mentioned in the article is "Mediocre EV sales versus growing bets on an all-electric future underscore slowing demand in China despite a protracted price war that has drawn in more than 40 brands."

I suspect that there has been a conspiracy led by Toyoda roping in other Japanese OEM's as well as manufactures in Europe and the US. Viking, you need to move away from the trap and calling hybrids different than "combustion* vehicles. As long as a car has an engine in it, it is a combustion vehicle. An ICE vehicle. That's exactly what hybrids are.

ICE mechanics get benzene, and don't forget asbestos from break pads. Tesla break pads should last 20 years with regen braking. EV adoption by itself is not the biggest disruption. It is the electricity going to those EVs that is important. We hit a 30% energy production by renewables this year. It will be over 90% by 2030 and that is the real disruption.
Its becoming apparent that we have all underestimated solar for a start.
China has the best hydro, wind, solar, nuclear power generation technology
90% of Chinese electricity is generated with coal, and they continue to build more coal stations.... They may be 'reducing oil dependency' ( because China has no oil ) but they are not reducing their use of dirt coal ( which China has a huge amount of ).....

Only because the government over there heavily subsidises their own cars, as well as put barriers in the way of imported cars, not to mention their influence over the population and what they can and can't do. In most real economies EV sales are in decline, or growing at a snail's pace. Sure, there's a few, like Norway, but they're an outlier. In New Zealand, EV sales have tanked to about 7% of new vehicle sales.
That's just "Tech bro" talk. Meanwhile, Toyota records very high profits, and Chinese companies are burning their government money.

China April car sales were 2.36 million ,which was up 9.3% vs April 2023. First four months of 2024 saw sales of 9.079 million cars , which was up by 10.2 % vs first four months of 2023. 2.94 million , or 32.4 % were 'new energy vehicles'. Meanwhile , manufacturers outside China are all experiencing 'waning demand' for EV's. In Australia , EV sales declined by 5.1% in April , to only 6.4% of the market. Even if they were half the current price , most people simply do not want one.

In China, a gasoline car costs 70 yuan for 100 kilometers, an electric car only costs about a dozen yuan, and charging at night only costs a few yuan, so the sales of gasoline cars will become less and less.
80% of Chinese electricity is generated from .... "thermal" sources - i.e. coal!! This is undoubtedly a huge win for people who care about the environment....

I’m driving my 10yo ICE Benz into the ground with the expectation that I’ll be buying he BYD Seal, in 2026, hopefully when larger capacity faster charging batteries are the norm.
270 to 315 miles are happening today and 10 minutes for 170 miles or you charge at your home or apartment!!
It’ll take more than 10 years to run your Merc’ into the ground. The bloke 2 streets up is still driving his 1965 220 SE. Beautiful thing. Don’t buy a Seal mate, in fact don’t buy anything built in China. You will regret it, appalling quality control. Go for a full US or European build EV with no Chinese battery.

why do you need a bigger and heavier batterypack, if you don't need the capacity daily? To be honest, how many people drive more than 300 Kilometers daily? Most of the people drive 300 Km a week, so it's about to charge the EV once a week, or after about 3hrs of driving on vacation or road trips, to use this 30 Mins DC charging stop to rest, take a short meal or visit the toilet.

Shell themselves said in 2018 that peak oil demand had passed, and the figures have since shown a steady, measurable decline in demand.....

when ICE market crashes in China, the effect will be felt world wide cause the overall cost of ICE will then go up. the gap between ICE and EV will widen in favour of EV.
What's missing in this video is what the insurance companies are doing when EV get into an accident as most of the time they simply total the car out instead of fixing it. What this is leading to is a pile up of EV's in junk yards and people are starting to notice this which is why EV sales are starting to take a dip. Who can afford to keep buy car after car when someone rear ends you or you get in some sort of seemingly minor accident that causes the car to be totaled by the insurance companies? As time goes on I think something totally different is going to rise above all of these as this something does something all these others do not which is put the individual in full control of their own energy needs.
That's why BYD has built its own insurrance company in China.

In South Africa, a market of 500K car sales annually, dealerships of Legacy Auto are closing one after the other. They been taken over by Korean and Chinese car manufacturers. So sad to see this play out because the good thing about the American auto manufacturers is that they open factories and manufacture locally and thus create many many thousands of jobs

My reading of the article is that of the 43.5% sales that are NEV, the majority are PHEV, with "pure" EV's comprising only 12.1% of total sales. Furthermore NEV sales also declined in April 2024 (compared to March), and while the percentage of new sales is a record for NEV's, the actual volume of NEV's sold was well short of any record. The real China story is in the export market....

China's PHEV sales are growing faster than BEV sales, but BEVs still sell more. From the data I've seen that seems to be because a good PHEV from a Chinese brand is now not only cheaper than the corresponding BEV, but even cheaper than the corresponding ICE car from foreign brands - so a lot of buyers that intended to purchase an ICE car are bringing home a PHEV instead. After all, with PHEVs now cheaper than ICE cars, it means the very last advantage that ICE cars had over PHEVs is lost.

At 2:20 Sam said 60% of NEV sales were fully electric, but the article says, "EV sales are still far slower than those of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).' and "EV sales quickened to 12.1% in April from 10.5% in March, while PHEV sales jumped 64.2% against a rise of 75.4% in March." This is only 28% of total NEV sales. At, 4:45, Sam says EV sales have grown 64% year-on-year in China. The only mention of 64% in the article is the aforementioned monthly sales of PHEVs. The only longer term EV trend mentioned in the article is "Mediocre EV sales versus growing bets on an all-electric future underscore slowing demand in China despite a protracted price war that has drawn in more than 40 brands."

I have been driving an ID4 for 3 years and every time I travel I notice that the existing charging stations are insufficient, if I now I read that in certain cities in the Netherlands the charging stations are closed at certain times, then I wonder how they do that in China?

Heinlein sifi books I read had the main character in a conversation with an auto worker about "big Eisenhower" cars being built and then scraped and recycled to start the process all over again. No one was buying them but if they stopped building them it would cause economic havoc for the workers. The fact the manufacturer was losing money didn't matter. Sam, what disruption? I am here in Guangzhou China and the disruption happened already. I see mainly EVs. Even trucks and buses are EV. I did see a stinky Nissan. A few noisy VW. Was is you that said lithium is about 66$/kWh now and the sodium batteries could cut that to the 40s? If we say a 50kWh pack of lithium that's only 3300$ and at 45$ it would be 2250$. That's not a huge cost item to hide in a car product. Especially when you can throw in strong acceleration basically for free because electric motors and power electronics is dirt cheap. You can make the identical car with 3 software limitation trims. And car dealers might offer a package of 2 solar panels and inverter for the garage roof with the premise that it will power all moderate driving. Which 2 panels actually can. Say 10km of driving per day. Or 4 panels for 20km per day. Solar panels are dirt cheap too.
My ordered product is coming on "a slow boat from China" was never more true than today. Whilst the whole world will be driving EVs, the USA will be like Cuba used to be; driving old gas/diesel vehicles.

When new battery has 1000km ramge at reasonable price .. likely cheaper to buy and clearly maintain. ICE will be absolute... however for 4WD and interstate normaids the plug in hybrid is still in game.. no chatging in the woods or out back or in the village in Borneo. But the ev to ice ratio will reverse by then. 20% hybrid and 80% ice.

you are kidding,The power consumption of car air conditioners is very low. Even in cold weather, there is a heat pump to protect the battery. What really affects the battery life is that the battery will drop quickly when the speed exceeds 120km, but only a few people will drive so fast.

@@stefan2796 Battery degradation is a myth. Ev will not lose more than 10% in 10 years, and about 20% in 20 years. The current cruising range is about 500 km in market which can meet daily use, and the charging problem will be solved with the development of super charging.There are only two problems with ev: too fast power loss at high speed (above 120km/h) and depreciation(because technology updates quickly)
Once they hit that steep upslope of the s curve, the next stop is 80-90%. China is starting that part of the s curve. I’m Really looking forward to see how it affects oil demand and usage, and as more EVs are sold, EVs get cheaper and cheaper to make, so even closed off markets (US for example) will eventually crack (unless they take even more extreme actions to block EVs)

I was at the FT's Future of Car Summit last week. European Manufacturers are worried.... very worried but there's narrative being spread that no one wants EVs. This was centered around cost which is about to be removed. I've spent my lifetime working in tech and I just see this as one of those moments where the disruptive force (Chinese EVs) are going to destroy the incumbents.
Many legacy auto makes have a good range of EV’S, I can only speck from my own experience that tells me that two years ago the only electric cars I saw on the road were Tesla, today I see more EV’S other then Tesla on the road. Legacy auto makers are in transition, so Sam give them a break, they far from dead and gone.
I have an EV and found that they are perfect for handling traffic jams ! Period.

The legacy auto industry is about to collapse. Give it another 12 to 24 months, once EV super charging market becomes ubiquitous, competitive and cheaper than gas stations. At that point it will be near game over for new ICE vehicles, which will then depreciate even more rapidly.

Sadly this is not likely to happen in North America because of protectionist policies. Even in Europe, there are European brands such as MG under Chinese ownership that can sell cheaper EVs. In North America, there are no cheap EV choices. It's one horse race Tesla here, and I hate Tesla.

Search for reconductoring existing electrical transmission lines. It can be done quickly and easily just not that cheaply. Cali did a 180 mile stretch a couple year's back and added 40% more continous capacity to existing infastructure. Also turning off all the oil pump jacks, oil pipelines and refineries is gonna open up or free a LOT of Existing generating capacity! As others correctly pointed out, overnight capacity is more than equal to daytime usage. And evs parked like most cars are for 95% of their lives. Can be plugged into smart chargers and v2x chargers. Able to absorb energy at anytime and even feed it back into the grid as needed. 😎

EVs are still too expensive to repair. Just look at how many of them get totalled by insurance companies over a sideswiped. Not enough trained mechanics and I can see why none of them want to be computer engineers to fix a cellphone.
The CEO of xpeng predicted this correctly in the summer of 2023, he said he felt nevs would hit 50% market share by 2025 at the latest. And that would make many ice manufacturer's unprofitable as they no longer would sell at high enough scale. He was laughed at by the ice making gasholes. Then in Oct China's largest oil refiner publicly said gas consumption for transportation peaked over there at the end of 2023! Now the iea says emissions will peak globally by 2028 or sooner and oil consumption could peak by 2026. 👍🏻😀

I’m most impressed by situation in (oil rich) Norway, and their EV-adaptation! This was only caused by the fact that their fuel prices hit world records. Everywhere with low gas/diesel prices, will see slower adaptation. People might say they “are green”, but their wallets sing a different tune.

Costs: 2 euro /(liter of benzine) , on average 6 liters/100 km. 0.3KWh (electricity price), one average 17kWh/100km. To make de 10k euro difference you need to drive the electric car 150,000 km (around 10 years). Practically the buyer or the government pays for this!
EVs depreciate more. And the insurance costs are much higher, because of the expensive repairs. So, it's not the best choice at the moment.

I really wonder why that it’s, because they what to sell outside china to get their money back. There is not enough raw materials to replace like for like with ice cars, they cost the environment issues far more than ice cars, has been stranded that you have to drive an ev 70,000 miles before the footprint is beneficial. Pass repair cost are too high as their isn’t enough trained qualified repairers to fix them.

In China, if you have a parking space downstairs or in the basement of an apartment, it is easy for you to apply for installing a (private)charging pile, just through the mobile app. In addition, there are a large number of (public) charging piles.
Saw something similar in Paris even 5 years ago. Streets had kerbside chargers on short metal poles the kind used to separate parking lots. Any place you can park a car overnight can have a charger installed. It just needs local regulation to make it easy for the EV owner/ operator.

What’s missing in this video is how China is providing the electricity to charge all these EVs. There are currently over 3100 coal fired power stations in China operating 24/7 and more are being built. Between January 2024 and December 2024 another 60 will become operational. China puts a lot of emphasis in the media about their solar, wind and thermal power projects but in truth these are totally outstripped in capacity by coal power. Hardly an environmentally friendly way of powering your EV.

You failed to mention the fact that when they build a solar power plant they also need to build coal fired power plant as the backup. So most of the new coal fired power plants are purposed for backup of solar energy. So in other words, more coal fired plants also means more solar firms and more solar power plant

absolutely not. even in a country that no longer manufactures cars locally (NL), the government has consistantly made it harder and more difficult to go electric. The power grid is strained because private companies had no incentive to invest in infrastructure, there are not enough publicly accessible street charging points available to meet the projected deman, people that received subsidies for installing solar cells are now having to pay exorbitant fees to the electric companies in stead of getting for the excess power they produce, electric cars cost an average of 40% more than gas cars, all subsidies and tax benfits on EVs are being rolled back, heavier battery powered cars are going to be levied by weight, etc etc. China is a planned economy and in no way a model of EV adoption for the rest of the world. Excessive Capitalism and "Boomerism" will hold back any form of transition.
Ever driven on an Australian road? You live here right? Australian and US roads are full of 4WD and SUVs, I need one and I'd love an EV but I'm not willing to don a Terminator suit before driving to the shops... When we get PRACTICAL 4WD-EV the Australian and US markets will follow China. Till then it doesn't matter how many electric shopping trolleys are offered, we need something that can carry tools, metal, wood and concrete...
