  • If you have an old engine with some sort of vvt its fine to use a slightly thicker oil, specially if you live in hot weather, if your oilcap says 0w-20 use a you can use 5w-20 no problem at all, this is good not only for hot weather since thicker oil transfers heat better ut its also good if your engine is burning too much oil, thicker oil won't find it's way into the combustion chamber as easily.

I do it before heat wave hits. Fall, put in psi. Vehicle has 218,000. I put 5/30 oil, every 5000 miles. And I have to, remind the scotty mechanic to put on a new washer. Of course he charges me $5.00. I'll bring my own.

I'm just going to replace all of them, both upper and lower. There goes an afternoon... but it sure beats hundreds of dollars for mechanic's labor cost. The parts were less then $300 dollars. I can only imagine what a mechanic would have charged.

Maybe as a suggestion, when you are ready to retire from being a mechanic, perhaps you could purchase a couple older cars and you can do one or two more series doing full Restorations. That would give you something to keep the motor ticking and we could continue to learn as you wind down.
