  • Phillip is such a ham - wonderful! From someone with a degree in English literature, I think we are both doing fine. Landscaping is a major task - weeding is a nightmare. Hours of toil with a mantra - "this will look great once we plant." I hear you on wisteria! It is such a romantic plant that turns into a stalker. Along with potato vine, jasmine - now it is hops for me. Add ivy along the way. I just keep some of these plants in my life ( for fragrance and torture) whilst acknowledging - they are trying to end my gardening life. OR my actual life. As I have said before, we step into your journey down the track and you have already done so much - amazing! One bit of advice with gardens - when I had 100 acres, first property here in TAS - I could not step outside without seeing work. I lost sight of the beauty and why I moved here in the first place. 20 years on - different space, I still have work but I can step back and celebrate the achievement and beauty. Enjoy lovlies, as I enjoy all you do xx

  • Phillip, for future reference, there is a procedure called ‘heeling in’. You take your newly purchased plants, dig a trench and lay them in the trench and fill it back in. This will keep the plants moist and viable for a couple of weeks or so. When you are ready to set them out, they will be easy to lift and plant into their permanent location. As an example, when I moved to my new house in the late fall of the year I was able to heel in my favorite plants in my friend’s vegetable garden for the winter. I was able to prepare their final locations and plant them in the spring. I did not loose even one plant! In the meantime, all the best to you and Anna and the girls. We enjoy your videos soooo much!!! Sarah and Michael

    • @@HowToRenovateAChateau Natural burlap around a root ball can be left in place after the top is opened once in the planting hole. To prevent drying out & damage on larger root balls, it's often better to plant them burlap & all. The natural burlap will disintegrate in the ground. Obviously this does not count for man made fibers that must be removed.

  • Here’s what I found re watering in the 1st year: Water Keep moist when first planted, watering deeply to help the shrub establish its root system. Once established, watering should still be deep, but less frequent. Most importantly, I would check to see if you will need to protect the Mexican Oranges in winter as they don’t tolerate frost or wind well. But they are a lovely choice to greet your guests! Their fragrance will be an added treat.

    • @@HowToRenovateAChateau I’m not sure they will need watering ever day. Just poke a finger in the soil and if it’s dry about 2inches down (middle of your finger), then you can water. A practical old wives’ tip.

  • Love the pallet-trick. I have used it to flatten my Potager garden too. I didn’t have a 3 year old (only have 6 and 8 years old 🤣) so I just put another pallet onto the other for more weight and that worked perfect 👌

  • The just, the dedication and hard work that you both have put into this home is absolutely astounding. Most people may have given up at several points along this journey. So glad to see how the land is changing. It must be so thrilling for you to see these projects come to life :)

  • That weeding tool IS great- just 'knock off' the excess soil back into the garden before tossing the weed. 👍❤

  • Thank you both for your entertaining and inspiring videos. Phillipp you are mad, bad and dangerous...! I am a professional gardener, and it fills me with joy to know that you have consulted a professional landscape designer. It's so important. Please go back to her and ask if you are unsure as you go along, it is so important to get it right, and Philip, always measure twice and cut/plant once. You just need a small file to sharpen tools, but come on you could even use a knife sharpener from the kitchen. Blunt tools are dangerous and hard work... , great job with the planting.
