I hate this penalty in general, it's literally based on how the ref feels that current day. You see players and coaches giving it to the refs damn near every game, especially when they get called on penalties, yet hardly any ref calls "abuse of officials" unless there's a physical altercation. It's a call that varies from ref to ref and they can call it whenever they dislike a player or dislike a team.

None of us know what was said, because Jomboy hasn't told us; however I do wish it was called this seriously more often in the NHL for words none of of us ever hear. The reason I say that is because what happens in youth hockey will never get the same level of international attention, I once had a coach tell me I (as a 16 year old) should make sure I get to my car before he got to me in the parking lot during a 10U club game. If words are punished harshly at the NHL level for abuse of officials, I think we would see it a lot less of it at the the lower, especially youth, levels.

Terrible call. Addison was well within his right to complain. As a ref when you make such a terrible call you have to eat it. Ref should be suspended for this. At some point a player needs to refuse to leave the ice/box/bench. There is literally nothing the refs can do, if they tried to call the game they would never referee again.
@edmurphy748426 күн бұрын
Right to complain where? What's he gonna say? "Fuck you I'm allowed to cross check him"?

These announcers are absolute clowns. These kind of interactions where players are upset and lose respect for the game, their teammates (2 minute penalty, 10 minute misconduct and a game), the referees and their self-respect is far too common. It’s this kind of abuse that refs take on a consistent basis from players that gets normalized and that co-signs parents losing their shit on their kids coaches and amateur referees. That being said, it just feels like there’s nothing we can do on an individual basis. It’s just disappointing to see it continue to poison a game that means so much to people.
@Sheldon-sl9fcАй бұрын
You are wrong. This is the highest level of simulated war, sport. That’s what you’re watching. Nothing verbal should ever be a penalty. Respect for referees is for people not playing pro.
@jacoblamb3535Ай бұрын
Agree, Sheldon. I played growing up and refereed (don't do either anymore after I graduated college). We'd lose around a third of the referees we'd gain every year because of abuse. It is so normalized and trickles down from the highest level, same with other sports. In few other context would it be appropriate to vituperously verbally abuse someone, but in a sports context, it somehow has become a tradition of deviance. Hope there can be change, but the outlook seems pretty bleak.

Appreciate your opinion and contribution to the discussion. I also used to referee and lines. Was one of my first jobs as a teenager. Pretty sweat gig at first; 20$ an hour, more time on the ice and got to help protect the sanctity/fairness of the game. That is until an incident in a playoff game where a coach from a AA Bantam team tried to assault the lead ref, myself as the linesman and my co-linesman (both 16 yoa) as he “disagreed” with the call the ref made. The chaos that ensued led to a tribunal for the parent/coach with him being barred for life from coaching and charged with assaulting two kids. Needless to say both myself and my peer quit referring shortly thereafter. I am hopeful that something changes, right? It has too. I feel like the mandatory conduct courses parents have to take in Ontario are a good start. We just need the leagues to step up and make the necessary adjustments to demystify the process of discipline and make the rules of conduct consistent and transparently clear.

You see players and coaches giving it to the refs damn near every game, especially when they get called on penalties, yet hardly any ref calls "abuse of officials" unless there's a physical altercation. It's a call that varies from ref to ref and they can call it whenever they dislike a player or dislike a team.
That's correct. If a player or team continually over time bitches at refs about everything and makes themselves unlikable, they put the bullseye on their own back.
@@petermain6791 Again, that should not matter. Refs, in any sport, should not ever have a call that they can make based on their own opinion of a player, that's beyond bullshit.
It’s the main reason I don’t like baseball. It’s like an umpire can throw anybody out because they ripped a bad fart.
Tort’s has entered chat.
Call was legit though, Addison helped him down with a cross check to the lower back.
Cooooooooley!!!!
I can tell you, as a ref, that there's one word that will get you the gate every single time. When I was a kid, it was a common taunt; now it's called hate speech. Any of the words considered in that category today will get you an early shower every time. USA Hockey and the NHL aren't playing when it comes to those words.
This Vid should just be called "What did Addison say? Wrong answers only"
Wild legend
It appears that he asked the ref if he wanted to go to Fuddruckers after the game.
That is a good call on the ref can we all just play like Wayne Gretzky
Love how sj is keeping their hc
That *was* a weak call. But the player needs to maintain control
I wish Tortatella was his coach
Could go either way. Torts might bench a player for a fortnight and maybe do a stint in the minors for taking undisciplined penalties. Torts is worse than the refs for getting butthurt and acting like a baby.
He just wanted to know what his thought process was
My Californian team!
I was at this game. The Sharks have a horribly toxic team which doesn't make you wonder why they are in literally last place in the entire NHL and the fans are just as toxic. Every time they received a call against them the fans began chanting "You suck ref." They booed at the refs when they first came out on the ice. If there was another team just as close where I could go see the Blues play twice a year I would go there.
When did they add a technical in the hockey world
seems soft in just this clip, but he was warned, not doubt, many times by that official to shut the f*** up prior to this call
"The jerk store called, they're running out of YOU!"
What has officiating become in this sport absolutely horrendous
They call the ref raymond on the broadcast it sounds like and he’s wearing #10? The box scores all say mitch dunning #20 and ghislain herbert #22. Call doesn’t have french accent, but jersey number is wrong? Just want to be sure it’s dunning.
Not sure about the box score, but the referees were #34 Brandon Schrader and #10 Kyle Rehman.
You can see in the video that the refs are #10 and #34.
His parents named him "Calen". Isn't that punishment enough?
Without knowing anything about what happened he probably talked to him.
Where was the abuse of official? I didn’t see him hit him or anything
He abused the refs feelings

"Hey Ref! Your mother buys sub par groceries!!"
Interesting the difference between hockey and baseball.
I get it if it’s late in a game when you wanna calm it down, but in the final minute of the first period that is a joke of a call. Tell him to shut up and move on.
Four penalties? Pick two.
Whatever he said i agree with him.
Rumor has it that moments before the call, the referee saw signs in the crowd that said fans paid to see him.
I wonder if Addison and the Wild would be in the playoffs if he didn’t get traded away
As a Wild fan I can say with certainty that they still wouldn't be in the playoffs if he wasn't traded away 😭😭
Things like this is why we’re 18-41 lol
He was just asking for water
Fuck yeah Kyle!
And that's what it should be: 2 10 and a game.
He didn’t even do anything. Officials can be emotional but not the players?? Hockey is just not the same anymore in every aspect👎🏽
I hate all refs in every sport. Especially NHL and NBA.
Softest call I’ve seen in my life. No surprise that ref couldn’t handle a little verbal abuse
Terrible call. Soft as Charmin.
How is that not a good call? Crosscheck to the back/hip, makes no other contact, uses the leverage to take out the player with the puck...
Lol, like maaaybe you complain about the other player taking a dive. Going down too easy. But telling the ref to F odd on such an easy call? What a dumb move
It was a good call. Addison just lost his marbles.
It was the 3rd penalty in a row against the Sharks, the were pretty pissed off by the refs.
@@drebk well then he should complain AT the diving player. if the player dived then they shudda both got 2mins cuz the crosscheck was clear
@@holliefitzzz Exactly. He let his emotions get the best of him. Undisciplined hockey. He literally forced the puck carrier off the puck and down to the ice using a 2-handed crosscheck. Some of these commenters are more blind than most refs
What a soft call and a soft response to being called out for it
A player can call a referee out but they shouldn't be abusive about it. I'm no lip reader, but you can see Addison repeatedly telling the referees to F off as he went to the box. Not good, and he overstepped the mark.
@@conorcahill5422 yeah he said it 5 separate occasions on the way to box, then the ejection whistle. def not a pro move when 0-0.
Soft call? That's a cross-check that downed the puck carrier
Addison is a baby
I didn’t know pushing was a penalty now. Might want to double check what a cross check is, because that wasn’t one. And while Kyle is at it, have a look at the difference between harassment of official and abuse of official. Terrible.
Somebody send this to Jomboy now
None of us know what was said, because Jomboy hasn't told us; however I do wish it was called this seriously more often in the NHL for words none of of us ever hear.
From what I can tell I saw “F*** off. F*** off. Every-f***ing-time” he said more after coming out of the box but it’s too shaky
Watch what you say
Seriously.... how often does this ever really happen. He quite obviously cross-checked the guy. Shut up and visit the box for two minutes. Spare us the theatrics.
When I read "abuse of an official" I thought Calen shot the puck at him or something. Turns out just another millennial/gen z got their feelings hurt.....
Called the technically a little quick. This is the NHL not minor hockey
You are wrong. This is the highest level of simulated war, sport. That’s what you’re watching. Nothing verbal should ever be a penalty. Respect for referees is for people not playing pro.
Hope there can be change, but the outlook seems pretty bleak.
boo fucking hoo... cry about it more you absolute loser. maybe grow a spine
These refs think they're the stars of the show. Call your penalty and stfu
