Retro Orbital Sander | Restoration | Handle Repair | 4K

This orbital sander has been hidden in the corner of my workshop for so long that I have already forgotten that it exists. I only know that the previous owner gave it away, probably because of the broken handle. In addition, it was built from two different orbital sanders where possible, since some parts do not belong together or have been adapted accordingly. For anyone who would like to get an orbital sander, I recommend getting an random orbital sander because of the advantages they offer. Nevertheless, I think it was a good restoration project because the unique retro design made of complete aluminum is no longer available today.

  • i started my spraypainting apprenticeship when I was 16 I'm now 64years old and I remember seeing sanders a lot like that in dusty corners in boxes along with old spray guns and grinders and many stripped machines that were used for parts a long time ago, and indeed those old sanders were meant to last years which they did. I think it was mainly the weight issues that got them replaced because using them in a panel shop for hours and days on end, you did notice the heaviness, but as far as the older spray guns were concerned they were replaced by better guns in every way, probably every 5 years they got super seated. I purchased a Ryobi polisher /sander 2 speed when I was 19 and its done years of hard work and I haven't even replaced the bushes on it.I went online and got a cheap orbital sander new that is in the older style shape, and when I first tried to use it after a second it lost power and was sparking a lot so I stripped it down `and did what the assemblers should have done in the factory and its not going to last heavy hours of work day after day, but I am guessing that one that you restored will run faultlessly and outlast all of us !

  • Great Restoration with a gorgeous result. I particularly like the technique with the superglue (min 20:19 ) I've been using it ever since I discovered it by chance, I have the feeling, however, that it is still an insider tip. With repetitive sanding between applications, it can also be used as a high gloss, hard and waterresistent finish that can also stabilize wood. Nice to see that it is used here you can literally build castles that way... Kind regards from Germany.

  • Greetings from Chile! This came out astoundingly nice! Good as new when you were done with it! By the by, I wanted to know if you could offer some good advice on restoring things. My dad and I recently came upon an old brass National cash register Model 343 (I think, if I'm reading it right) from around the late 19th, early 20th century. Bought it off for about 70 bucks. This one was apparently owned by James Thomas Humberstone! We're unsure of how to go about removing all the rust and stuff without damaging it any further from the handling of the previous owners. What sorta chemical baths and solutions can we use to clean off the rust? Thanks in advance!

  • I purchased a used one as the piece is a bit pricey, but the machine kzhead.infoUgkxG6fbm3cHBd7CNTjk5D-dwYe9c9tCB9ZN has surpassed my expectations. We sand small parts by hand often, sized around 1"x1/2," and specifically look for a piece that's designed to be vertical. The motor has plenty of torque and great speed settings. The only inconvenience I had is that the disk measures 5" where we trim 6" stick-and-sand disks down easily by mounting it then cutting with a box cutter.
