AEG | German Bench Grinder | Restoration & Modification | 4K

I have been looking for a suitable polishing machine for a long time because I always have to polish when restoring. Unfortunately, the compatibility of newer models is somewhat limited and older ones are extremely rare. Since I'm The Restoration Guy anyway, I decided to restore an older bench grinder and then modify it for my purposes.
In case someone is wondering why I have reduced the bench grinder from 380V to 230V, the connections in my workshop are very limited, for this reason it was easier to change the bench grinder as to lay new cables.
How to connect the electric motor 380V to 220V:

  • Nice restoration! One remark: Your earth (yellow/green) wire should always be the longest, not the phase (brown) or neutral (blue) wire. In case you accidentally pull the cable out, the last one to go is the earth.

  • Working with a friend (who had a lot more confidence than me) we stripped out the busted gearbox of a heavy old Holbrook lathe, to repair the reversing mechanism. It did not use many ball races, just bronze bearings all over the system. The solidified grease and oil was older than either of us. In order to do all this we had to remove the belt drive system, in it's heavy cast casing. That part alone was over 200Kg. We managed to fix the bodged up parts and get it all working again, as intended. It is still a good lathe with a taper turning attachment and reversing on the fly. It is amazing how solid and well made these old tools are. Once they are cleaned, with fresh bearings, they work like new.

So we regularly witnessed huge motors, some approaching 1000 Kg arriving, some burned out and being stripped and rebuilt It was fascinating. Being in Sheffield we had and used some very large buffing sets on stands in the polishing & grinding workshop; well away from Lathes and milling machines. It was a great place.

Also moving those motor end bells involves moving the shaft within the bearing - so it makes it much easier to to clean the shafts as much as possible of rust before doing that. Cheers, Craig

  • Subbing. There are a few things that I didn't enjoy and I leave here for you to consider: Using the vice to secure the screw, without any protection to not damage the treads. Not using a proper tool to remove the circlip and finally, the type of paint. If you had used hammerite metal paint the end result would have been awesome. And I guess you know this, you really need a sandblaster, even if just because of the mesmerizing effect that it makes when people watch something being sandblasted. :)

    @pedroteixeira4369@pedroteixeira43694 жыл бұрын
    • Thank you very much and thank you for your constructive criticism. Yes, because of the screws and the locking ring, I agree that I could have done better. I am also a fan of Hammerit. The problem is that they have a limited range of colors. Because of the sandblaster, I still have to see how I can organize it from the squareof my workshop is already pretty full, but yes, people love it and I think I will get one in the future because removing the paint is always annoying.

    • What a great reaction, i also like the common tools that were used. For the same reason. Sure you can grow but you did a really great job dude!!! Finally some video's about restoration of both function and looks. Most of restoration video's are about looks. Keep learning, keep restoring. Greetings from Holland

  • Looks great, first video of yours I’ve watched, the fact that it was done with minimal tools gives me hope. I am wanting to start refurbishing power equipment and have been collecting tools and equipment, I think I’m ready, though I still want a powder coating system and a lathe. Maybe I’ll start with my 3 phase 440v grinder, it could use some tlc

    • Thanks a lot. Nice to hear that my video helped you in some way. I also have to add a lathe to my workshop. Maybe in the future I will find one that I can restore and that fits into my workshop.

    • The Restoration Guy I’ve been refurbishing boats for a while but that is expensive and extremely time consuming, I’ve restored cars, houses, I got into upholstery simply because I enjoy making old ratty things look new again. But my biggest attraction to restoration and repair is that I’m sick of this throw away lifestyle we have. Even though I own a lot of Chinese junk myself I hate that that is what passes for consumer quality goods. I may not be able to change the world but I can save some of the great products of the past from the scrap yard.

  • 25:50 Your earth chassis connection is not good. You need to use a split washer above the cable end (to keep pressure always) and a star washer below, for a good electrical connection, Scrape the paint around the screw until you see metal. The way you have it, vibrations will make it get loose over time. Loved the video, hope you get another 30 years of use of this grinder!

    • @@TheRestorationGuy The protective conductor (ground) must be as long or longer as the others. In the event that the cable is pulled out of the housing, the protective conductor must be the last one to be pulled out to protect against electric shock.

  • The reason you had a hard time removing the last screw was because you removed all the other screws first and the last screw was now holding all the stress. Slightly loosen all the screws first before you start removing any of them out. You do great work!

Muchas felicidades ¡¡¡

  • Enjoy all your videos, but on this one, I caught myself wincing a few times. First, when you removed the paint from the inside of the grinder; second when you began using filler on that amazing texture on the surface; third when you selected a colour other than original (which was so great). Like I said, great videos, but my 2 cents on these few details. Keep up the great work.

    • Good to hear. Most people don't like the paintwork. The problem is that hammerite doesn't have the largest selection. I thought the vintage green would fit well and of course I have to prime for the spray paint. But thanks for your criticism, I probably have to stick to the original color more in the future.
