Broken Collapsed Vintage Garden Bench - Complete Restoration

I rescued this rusty and rotting Victorian style vintage garden bench, which had collapsed and was on its way to the tip! I really liked the look of it with the cast iron bench ends and with the lion head shape on the handles and so I decided to carry out a complete restoration and give it to my wife for Christmas!
This is my first time at getting into ASMR videos / autonomous sensory meridian response videos with no talking. I know a lot of people like ASMR relaxing videos to watch some interesting work and unwind on an evening!
The Victorian style cast iron bench ends were in pretty good shape but the loose paint needed to removed and the rest keyed. Some metal rust removal was carried out and finally a good rust converter used to ensure any remaining remnants of rust on the metal was removed. I used Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 rust killer for this because I also restore classic cars and have always found it to be good.
Once the bench ends and other metal parts were ready, I applied a good quality metal paint. The best metal paint that I have found is Rustoleum Combi Color and I used “shades of violet & purple” as it is my wife’s favourite color. It can be used as a direct to metal paint but for best results, I prefer to rust treat the metal and if necessary, prime it before applying the paint.
The bench slats that I used for the repair are Iroko hardwood slats. These should last really well, especially as I treated them with a few coats of Bartoli teak oil. In the video I show you how to apply teak oil. I tried a few different methods I the past (spraying etc) but to be honest the best way to apply teak oil is to simply brush it on. It brushes on easily and since it is quite thin, there isn’t a concern about runs in the finished item.
It wasn’t difficult to restore the garden bench but it was quite time consuming. However, I’m hoping you agree that the transformation was quite dramatic and satisfying.
I hope you like my work and the video. If so, I would be very grateful if you gave the video a thumbs up 👍
If you have any questions about the process, products I'm using or other stuff, just ask me in the comments. I read them all and I try to reply as soon as possible. 😊

    • Thank you! Yes, I would have been a real shame for it to go to the tip!

  • Super. I'm at the cast iron prep stage and was looking for tips and how to treat before painting the hammerite. I see you used Panel Wipe but white spirit also seemed to do a decent job

  • Wow, that looks amazing! Must admit I thought the colour was too bright to start with, but no, it looks fantastic! A really lovely restoration ❤🇬🇧

    • Thanks very much! I had seen a vintage bench with bright pastel coloured bench ends and thought I would go for something similar. Although the wood on the other bench was painted I thought the contrast of the paint against oiled hardwood would look better. My wife’s favourite colour is purple, so that also influenced the choice. 👍 Thanks, Phil

  • This is great. I'm doing exactly the same thing but my ends didn't come with the metal supports attached. So you know where these would come from?

    • Sorry for the slow reply! Sounds good, hope your bench turns out good! 👍 On mine, they are just strips of 2mm thick steel with a hole drilled at each end, so it should be relatively easy to make some up. Hope that helps! Cheers, Phil

    • Thanks! Yes, it was very rewarding to fix it up and should last a long time too! You should definitely fix yours up in the spring, looks great in the back garden and is a very comfortable bench with the profiled back rest 👍😎 Cheers, Phil
