All of the GREAT British Super Middle Weights and Cruiser Weights were damn near blacked out here in the media and by promoters. We were also deprived of the likes of Nigel Benn and Chris Eubanks. • @@hillarymathers6322 You’re talking about Manny Pacquiao fighting Joe Calzaghe?

      @brandnew9834@brandnew98343 жыл бұрын
    • @@hillarymathers6322 If are you are talking about Pacquiao fighting Calzaghe, I honestly it’s tough to imagine how that fight could ever happen. Manny started at 106 pounds, that’s light flyweight. If I’m not mistaken, Joe was a legitimate 168 pounder for the vast majority of his career. Manny is about 5’5” compared to Joe’s 6’1”. We’re also talking about a 6” reach advantage for Calzaghe. We’ve seen Pacquiao have varying degrees of success all the way up to 154 pounds. But a small fighter can get away with getting up to 154, and still have height and reach that are relatively comparable to the opponents there. But once you get to 160 pounds, most of the top guys there are naturally a lot bigger, and stronger. I think Manny is too small for Joe. Pacquiao does have good power for his size. He can hurt guys a 154 and below, but I don’t think he could hurt a natural 160 or 168 pounder. I don’t know that Manny would be able to keep Joe off of him. Also Joe is not really a brawler. A brawler is a guy like Ricardo Maygora, Brandon Rios, or Carl Froch. Brawlers usually can hit pretty hard, but they aren’t usually technically sound. They usually have longer, looping punches that can be pretty easily countered. They usually can only move forward, and they are flat footed. Joe can actually box, his footwork is legit. He’s not the biggest puncher at 168 or 175, but he could definitely hurt a smaller fighter. Joe threw a lot of punches, but he threw them in beautiful combinations, they were crisp and accurate shots. I’m pretty sure Calzaghe would stop Pacquiao by the championship rounds. If you want an example of how that kind of fight probably works out, check out Bernard Hopkins versus Oscar De La Hoya, Errol Spence Jr. versus Mikey Garcia, or go way back to Roberto Duran versus Tommy Hearns. Calzaghe would land a lot of punches on Manny, Manny would probably land as well but his punches wouldn’t hurt Calzaghe like Calzaghe would hurt him. To be in the ring against a naturally much bigger guy who has pretty much the same hand speed and skill, with about 25% more power is really hard task. It’s almost an impossible matchup to win. The only smaller fighter I would consider betting on to beat a bigger man would be Floyd Mayweather because of his boxing IQ, footwork, defense and speed. I could have seen him being able to outbox a GGG. But Floyd is the greatest pure boxer who ever lived, and started out about 24 or 25 pounds heavier than Pacquiao at 130 pounds. Manny is a legend, and he’s a greater fighter in terms of accomplishments than Joe, but he’d be in real trouble against Calzaghe in a actual fight. That would almost be like asking Canelo Alvarez to fight Anthony Joshua. Every fighter has their limits.

    • ThunderDomeBoxingTalk I doubt Joe feared him. At one point during the fight, Joe went to his corner and said "He can't hit for shit!" I think that if Roy Jones and Calzaghe fought at their best, I believe Roy would barely edge it out or Joe wins a bit decisively. I love RJ as much as the next guy but RJ lacked fundamentals and relied heavily on his athleticism. Plus Joe had more heart since Joe has been in trouble multiple times and when RJ got in trouble, he often lost.

  • Super Joe is one of the most, if not the most underrated and underappreciated fighters of all time. It really is hard to understate just how good this guy was. At his peak when he fought Lacy, it would have been real hard for anyone in the history of boxing to beat this guy... Remember when he fought Jones and Hopkins he was 37 & 38 YO with lost of hand injuries and past his prime by years.

    • @@oldl6655 Yeah, it’s the documentary is trying to act like his 3 biggest wins against Lacy, BHop, and Roy came when they were in their prime, or out coming off of shoulder surgery (Lacy). Calzaghe was a great fighter, but assessing his place in boxing history is difficult. I would have liked to see what he could with a 30 year old BHop or Roy. I wished he’d have come to America to fight more, I would like to have seen him fight Sergio Martinez.

      @xaviervega468@xaviervega4683 жыл бұрын
    • @@xaviervega468 I agree. He really short changed his legacy by now coming over. The reality is that the U.S. is the Mecca of boxing. The U.S. has produced the majority of P4P Greatest fighters of all time, and more importantly the dominant STYLES in boxing that can only really learn from the American trainers. Joe had the athleticism and the hand speed to be competitive with most fighters in America. He probably would not have been 46-0, but I’m confident he would have been a World Champion. He would have probably made more money in America because American casual boxing fans have a history of really warming to Caucasian fighters. Ricky Hatton had a lot of American fans. Guys like Arturo Gatti and Kelly Pavlik drew fans. I think that some people get bored of seeing black men dominate sports in general, especially boxing. I think Calzaghe would have been embraced, I think he would have had several PPV fights. He may have gone 43-3 or so instead of 46-0, but he would be much more respected by the boxing establishment. We would hear his name a lot more.

    • Hopkins twice in the later rounds tried to fake low blows because he knew he was losing on points, there is no other reason for that. A fighter like Hopkins knows when he was losing the fight. Now he claims he was robbed, but during the fight, he knew he was getting beaten there can be no other reason for the simulation.
