    • This is the perfect way to say it. I grew up with the Infinity Saga and will always have fond memories of it, and even revisit those films from time to time. But Endgame gave me all the closure I needed in an extremely satisfying way. I don’t need anything else, especially if the two Disney Plus shows so far are any indication of the quality moving forward. I’ll likely see Spider-Man and Guardians, maybe Strange too... but beyond those established characters I don’t really care. I’ve mostly just moved on to other things, as you said.

  • What the MCU needed for phase 4 was actually an exercise in restraint. For phases 1-3 to span that many years, with that many high-quality movies, with so many perfectly-cast characters that became fan favourites and to then wrap it all up in the juggernaut that was infinity war/endgame was truly a remarkable feat. It was also, unfortunately for marvel, a once-in-a-career kinda thing. They wanted to ride the momentum into phase 4 but they actually needed to give people a break. Fans had been so emotionally invested in the infinity war saga for so long that it was exhausting, and endgame seemed to signal a time to just *breath* and let go, recover from superhero-movie-fatigue. It was way too soon to expect people to start being as invested again into so many new characters so quickly. They seemed to rush into phase 4 (despite all the COVID delays) and it all feels a bit directionless. The mostly uninspired casting choices haven’t helped. There’s a reason old-favourite Spider-Man has been their most successful release post endgame. I expect Strange 2 to do quite well too for the same reason. A break before launching into phase 4 could’ve given audiences a breather, and also themselves more time to actually plan a proper structure and direction. Also the fragmentation has been odd. In the infinity war saga it was easy; watch the movies released in cinema and you were up to date and could follow all the in-jokes and callbacks. Now tho they’ve had storylines expanded and introduced on Disney+ which isn’t available in a lot of regions around the world yet. I haven’t been able to see the shows so anyway they try to link the movies with the series would be lost on me, and I’m sure many others. The streaming shows are also saturating viewers with marvel stuff; now you gotta follow half a dozen marvel shows as well as their movie releases…it’s just a lot of marvel at once!

    @bobs_sa8480@bobs_sa84802 жыл бұрын
    • lets be real most of phase 1-3 was not high quality, Id say 2/3 were either shit or average. I think the problem is like you said, we needed a breather. Endgame was and is the end. We grew up with that story and those characters and it ended. Theyve been coming right back in but at least personally the only MCU movies I am looking forward too are obviously the team up ones - f4, xmen, avengers 5, while the only solo movies are about characters we already know about. Strange, thor, guardians. The disney + shows are straight ass. Your right that phase 4 having movies and shows is just too confusing and most of us arent watching average joe action/comedy shows. The only show Im remotely excited for is the guardians holiday special. No way home proved marvel can still make great movies, but the hype/excitement of marvel is gone until they get the russos back for a new avengers imo.

      @barkley8285@barkley82852 жыл бұрын
    • I respect your opinion. I for one, am not burnt out at all. They are literally following the same formula that comics in general follow. You definitely don't have to see everything but you will understand it better if you do. If you need a breather, take one. It's that simple. Come back to it later; or not. You shouldn't feel in any way obligated to watch this stuff. It's all for fun. If you're not having fun for whatever reason, stop watching. I don't understand why people complain about the MCU so much. Movies and shows that are meant to just chill and enjoy... but people want everything to be The Dark Knight and/or Logan (Thought provoking and nuanced)... but like I said, I get it. oversaturation is real. But I (and many others) would have been upset if they took that break. We all have the option of taking a break from the MCU, if the MCU doesn't take one, by simply not watching their stuff.

Don’t get me wrong I love the character appearances in the movies and I also like Cumberbatch, but I still feel the same way about his standalone movie, in that it doesn’t really have anything to do except say "well, here’s our new character". The entire movie feels like a wiki page section about a character background that you read out of necessity because the character is going to appear in the future again and not because the movie itself is particularly interesting. So I’m not against more Dr. Strange, I just don’t think there’s really enough to make a standalone movie while arguing that no one in the Avengers can help him and he has to be the main character, but maybe Raimi will convince me otherwise.

Like what happened with Ant-Man and how he's complete shit at his job compared to the side character, or like how the kid in Black Panther is somehow way smarter than anyone else, including Bruce Banner. Characters that were introduced earlier should be more powerful or better in some way than brand new characters. I get that for a prequel to work, there needs to be a risk of death for someone who's not the main character obviously, but you still can't have that side character be more important than the main character who's actually been in multiple movies. It seems like Marvel is going to do the Black Widow movie incorrectly because they don't realize that for a prequel to have tension, you don't HAVE to overshadow the main character with some new person that never existed until now.

  • When Iron Man 1 came out, it was so fun and exciting. Finally, a decent, entertaining and soulful superhero film with consistently solid special effects, writing and acting. There have been plenty of other superhero films out in the past, but this one seemed to be a tipping point for the snowball to fall down the mountain. Not the best film of all time, but a solid door opener to a new world of movies - superhero flicks. The issue now is that the room has been fully explored and every possible hero, protagonist, story, effect houses, actors etc combination has been attempted to the point of stagnation. The film industry for the superhero genre is a money bleached, exhausted, dead horse, and it needs to be left alone to recover. The fruits of their labour has been reaped and sowed too many times and the soil from which these types of movies come from is so nutritionally raped that forcing shit into it, funnily enough, only gets shit coming out of it. I can remember growing up seeing so many new ideas in films and often not liking them but at least my mind was expanded into new places that encouraged my tastes to grow. The safe space these films have created will end up being their own undoing.

Make him the main villain through most of Phase 4, then bring in an even bigger threat that forces him into a redemption arc. Maybe Knull, although I'm not versed in Knull's power levels enough to be sure if he'd be the right existential threat to force all supers to rally together. My point is, without well thought out villains going forward, MCU will stand for Mediocre Cinematic Universe

    @lancemaltby895@lancemaltby8952 жыл бұрын
    • The thing is much of the hype and passion for Phases 1-3 came from a historically misdirected genre- superhero movies- finally being done right but in separate forms. Then the sleuths started to piece together the existence of a novel and ambitious macro-narative- the cinematic universe. The same way some find fun in conspiracy theories or mysteries for piecing together small seemingly unconnected events, the act of uncovering the new genre was much of the fun. Now however the novelty has worn off and any new phase is expected to be a "wheres waldo" for its connection to the rest of the films. Unlike Captain America, Thor or Iron-man, phase 4 is a game of stuffing new characters into the constraints set by the past rather than growing boundaries for new characters. GOTG worked because it was a disconnected stand alone series initially- You could worry about their fates because for all intents and purposes it was a separate universe and anything could happen. But with the Loki show and Shang-qi, the scale of what qualifies as MCU material is literally the multiverse. The cast in Shang-Qi has far less room to develop into their own mythos without Doctor Strange or Kang being in the back of your mind. I think the best move is to start focusing on villains as the source for new stories because that's fresh and untapped. But because of this I think DC will finally take its potential and start a functional DCEU because Villains are its strong suit. TL;DR The MCU's success came from its vitalization of superhero movies and capitalizing on novel story telling frameworks, as audience tastes and demand for depth grow DC has the upperhand in utilizing its darker Villains and fresh setting

The whole point is now for Marvel to be able to add new characters while creating a coherent and interesting plotline and obviously ascend the value of the ones that have been here from the start like Thor ,Hulk , Loki, Bucky Barnes , Sam Wilson and so on (something that it is already happening and it's still vague if it is going to be well handled )

  • I started reading Marvel Comics in 1963 and by 1968 I was buying them all, searching for old issues in used book stores. The Marvel movies that are successes are the ones that lifted the stories, dialogue and all, straight from the pen of Stan Lee. The problem was that they got too greedy. The first Spiderman movie took pieces from the first 90 issues. Too soon, the MCU ran out of Stan Lee stories and had to make up their own. Stan Lee was a genius. It was his idea to give superheroes human problems, Peter Parker being the original mold. Even Sgt Fury had personal issues, losing his best friend at Pearl Harbor and the love of his life in the Blitz. The DC comic heroes originally had none of this, but eventually, by the end of the sixties, had adopted these conflicts into their stories. The writers of today's Marvel movies aren't as bright as a birthday candle compared to Stan Lee.

    @goldbug7127@goldbug71272 жыл бұрын
    • Nah, the mold were the fantastic four. They had human problems from the get go. In fact, that was the entire reason for stan lee to invent the fantastic four to begin with. And i know that because he says so ;) Peter parker "just" was the first character where that concept was tailored to the youths reading those comics at that time. While fantatsic fours human problems were tailored to adults.

    • Why did the MCU *HAVE* to stop after Endgame. There's a lot more story to tell and books that need to be opened and closed.

      @Antwannnn@Antwannnn2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Antwannnn Harry Potter ran for eight films and then ended. Fast/Furious have eight films and a spin-off. The only other one I can think of, that really compares, is the James Bond franchise. They're about to release the 25th. If there are any other film franchises that have 20+ entries, I can't think of one right now. That said, the MCU released about as many films as the Bond franchise in _one-fifth_ of the time. Not to mention, the sheer scale of the MCU blows Bond out of the water. Bond is about one dude having lots of adventures. Marvel has lots of people, lots of adventures, lots of threads, lots of stories, and it goes beyond films to TV series too. What Marvel has achieved is staggering and the fact that they did it with, at times, D-list characters is even more incredible. Some of these characters have never even _been_ in films and now they're household names. Guardians of the Galaxy, in particular, was an unused, almost unheard-of property, but it was so successful (because it was so damn good), the marketing for next unused unheard-of property - Ant-Man - was advertised as being "from the studio that brought you The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy". GotG went from people saying "Guardians of the what-now?" to being on posters next to the fucking Avengers. That unprecedented success is not a fluke either; just look at the success that the Daredevil series achieved. The Ben Affleck film was released in, what, 2003? and was almost universally reviled and panned. Yet the Netflix series went from strength to strength. And their success stands out not just in and of itself, but also in the fact that every other damn studio tried to push a shared universe. This also extends to television, with The Walking Dead having multiple spin-offs and several being produced for the Game of Thrones franchise. Everybody wants to copy Marvel's formula, because it's a formula that worked. This isn't to say that every Marvel film has been a masterpiece, far from it. There are a few that I definitely have no intention to watch every again. But the overall franchise is an incredible achievement. They can rest now.

When T'Challa came to him for aid M'Baku realised that T'Challa did not believe himself to be above M'Baku's clan and truly Valued M'Baku and his people. • I've gotta be honest you had the worst take about Thor Ragnarok and Thor Love and Thunder. Jane Foster is a character that's existed since Phase 1 and in the comics, she becomes Thor at one point. Valkyrie is a comics character who serves Odin as a Valkyrie and the only reason she "beats" Thor is because he has a shock collar on. That's like being confused why Tony couldnt catch Pepper in Iron Man 3 even though he didnt have a suit on. Also Hela is a recurring villian in the comics for Thor and she's not even supposed to matter, she's just a figureplace for the need of Ragnarok, it's to push the plot forward. I mean Tony probably didnt need to have the glove on directly he couldve made a hulkbuster type suit to snap with the stones but his contract was up so they needed a natural way to progress the story, they needed to get rid of Asgard and have the Asgardians in space so they had Hela so they needed to do Ragnarok. Not every female character has to be "Strong female character"

She's the main villain of course she has to be a legitimate threat. Because Valkaryie cheap-shotted him once? Again so what? Thor was already cheap-shotted and incapacitated by that mob before she even got there. And Thor being captured is what leads him to Sakaar and everyone he needs in order to save Asgard.

And even if that wasn't the case, so what? It's not like Thor lacked serious moments, agency, and importance in Ragnarok. He's even given a powerup that he learned to control after having an internal and poignant conversation with Odin. If the comedy wasn't your cup of tea (quality or quantity-wise) then that's fine. But Thor wasn't relegated to playing second fiddle to anyone in that story.

    • Yup, that's what made WandaVision worse. Not Wanda, but Monica Ramboe who's a can do not wrong always innocent Black woman who has to deal with a grumpy old white guy in a suit who barely had a character and was more of a caricature. I suppose you could apply it Wanda because she's so powerful that she just learned magic without being taught instead of Doctor Strange or even Agatha Harkness training her. I'm also sick of every villain being tragic or an anti-hero. I want Loki to be a villain again, but he makes Disney's adult femals audience wet, so he has to remain a tragic villain. I haven't seen Captain Marvel and I refuse to. I know enough about it to not want to watch it. They made Nick Fury into a joke, a pussy, and his scarred eye was from a cat scratch. I was picturing his injury as him getting stabbed in the eye or something while fighting criminals. Something insane. I guess if they had a Black man getting an actual injury it'd be "racist." Or maybe what's racist is having Nick Fury be a scared bitch so that Captain Vagina seems stronger by default. Lady Thor, She-Hulk, Iron Heart, and I'm pretty sure they were gonna replace T'Challa with Shuri even if our King had not died. R.I.P Chadwick Boseman Wakanda Forever *rips off Wonder Woman's arm thing* But really, even if Chadwick was alive and well, I'm pretty sure they were gonna have T'Challa retire. I don't mind female superheroes at all unless they're just "this male superhero but a woman." It shows that they don't care about the characters, they care about the characters being women. It's why DC possibly making a Superman movie with a Black Clark Kent instead of adapting Calvin Ellis is fucked. Calvin is arguably a big role model for Black people than Clark is, considering he's based on Barack Obama and the US President. Oh, and Braniac is his bit- I mean secretary. They don't care about having a Black Superman, they care about having Superman be Black and only Black. Same goes for Marvel with those female characters. Although, I don't think She-Hulk was ever a problem, and Lady Thor actually sold well because of the mystery. But Iron Heart is trash.

  • I think that, while Marvel works on adding new and more "diverse" heroes to their movie series, they need to work on actually making their characters and their stories diverse. Most, if not all, of the Stan Lee supervised Marvel movies benefitted from this. Iron Man, Captain America, GotG, Ant Man, Thor, and so on each had their own more or less unique plot structures and distinct character styles, even if some of them might be considered archtypical. Looking at the newer heroes and their movies, specifically Captain Marvel and Shang Chi, I see a pattern developing, which seems to reduce the depth and individuality of the heroes, and the character themes all seem to start blending together: 1. Story starts with minor exposition that provides setting but usually doesn't explain enough for the audience to truly understand what's going on. 2. Introduces character who has some kind of history, but not enough is told at or near the start, so the audience needs to struggle to piece together this new character, and eventually failing because the character is primarily presented as being shallow with no strong feelings or ideals about anything. They just kind of get pulled along by the plot. 3. After quick introduction of main character, side characters are briefly introduced, then hero is thrust into an action scene, revealing how capable they already are, and largely showcasing their lack of personality. 4. Intense situations are sullied by attempts at comedy, some of which are not really funny at all if you think about it for more than 2 seconds, some of which play on stereotypes which Disney pretends it avoids. (For example, Shang-Chi was stuffed full of Chinese/Asian stereotypes. Parents planning their child's future and forcing them down a career path from an early age, Asian children excelling in education, enjoying karaoke, drinking and staying out late but still finding time to get just enough sleep to be functional at their job, and so on.) 5. Main villain is revealed or introduced, but not fought. 6. Hero has some kind of revelation or awakening, which pretends to be character development. 7. Side characters do something to show that they're still in the film. 8. Expectations are subverted, even when they're not. 9. Villain is fought and defeated with no lasting impact because they were pretty shallow as well. 10. Hero just moves on with their life, with the promise of being roped back into hero stuff. Altogether, this makes the movie feel rushed and shallow. Crammed into a 2 hour movie are many dangling threads that should have been woven together into multiple movies, to truly build a character for their plot. Each character should be having their own unique kind of struggles, as had been shown in earlier Marvel movies: Tony Stark struggles with responsibility and guilt when he sees with his own eyes, and feels with his own body, what the weapons his company makes are doing. His first movie, and a part of the second, are about him stepping up to use his money and power to be a positive change in the world, rather than just to defeat an enemy. The third movie builds off of this, and has Tony struggle with the consequences of his past behavior and actions, making the audience wonder how things might have turned out if he hadn't been such a prick for most of his life. Steve Rogers struggles with being powerless, and by a twist of fate has the opportunity to gain power. But then after doing so, he struggles between doing what he thinks is right, amd being what others want him to be. He gets tired of being a tool for propoganda (And in turn sees the difference between that propoganda and reality), and steps up to use his abilities for change. While the character does have a clear enemy to fight, Hydra, the setting and build-up are already taken care of by actual world history. Everyone with a basic education has been taught how horrible and cruel the Nazi's were, so the movie didn't need to spend much time detailing that to build the enemy's character. Again, real-world history builds the way for the second movie, as Nazi ideas were brought to the rest of the world by the scientists Russia and the U.S. took from Germany after WW2. The second and third Captain America movies further exemplify Steve Rogers' theme of choosing between blindly following authority, which can change based on the times, or doing what he himself believes is right, even when that may be more difficult and make him more enemies. The Hulk is The Hulk. He smashes. GotG focuses on characters who feel they have little or no clear purpose in their lives, about deep down really want some. So a group of differing individuals bumbles around together until they naturally form a bond and focus their varied efforts toward a common goal, finding what they wanted all along. The second movie builds off of this by forcing Quill to realize how important his new family and friends are to him, compared to the illusion he'd created about his biological family. Ant-Man is about a father who made decisions in the past that society didn't approve of, and this caused him to be removed from those he loved. He's given an opportunity to fix that, and maybe make a bigger positive difference in the world, but it's a risk. If it goes wrong, he could permanently lose that which he wants most. So he needs to make a choice about whether or not he's willing to take that risk. Doctor Strange is a unique character compared to the others. His movie is all about seeing the bigger picture beyond himself, and how the material world is not necessarily all there is to life. He's later portrayed as someone who has knowledge of things beyond normal human comprehension, and a plethora of magics (Though this is unfortunately heavily underplayed). The main appeal of his character is the nearly incomprehensible nature of the other dimensions and creatures that he supposedly protects humanity from. He's meant as a supporting character to the Avengers, first and foremost, even as a Deus ex Machina. I'm hopeful that Multiverse of Madness, coming out in 2 weeks, will double down on these themes, but I'm certainly ready for disappointment. New characters have basically no sign of a unique struggle, unless you consider Captain Marvel's anti-masculine-man message or Shang-Chi's weak family interactions, to count as such. Thus most of these new movies feel rushed and flat, when they should have been split into 2 movies with seperate plots with actual depth. It's really a shame, because a diverse cast of characters opens the way for many unique stories and inspirational or thoughtful challenges to overcome. Characters like Captain America and Spiderman can largely avoid spending time on charcter development and setting in their first movie. Captain America because his character is simplistic and straightforward, and Spiderman because there'd been like 10 Spiderman movies and shows in the previous 20 years so everyone and their uncle knew what his general backstory is. Unfortunately without someone of vision and depth themself closely overseeing future Marvel movies, they're destined to become and remain bland and repetitive.

    • Tbf it's hard to know which Hulk movie is technically canon at this point, but the whole "hulk smashes" misses a whole lot about the nuance of the character. There's a lot about self control, what makes someone human, dealing with a conflict of your nature vs morality. I think that (almost) every character created/introduced before 2018 has full character development. Hell, Wanda, Vision, Sam, and Bucky were all good until recently...you either die a hero or live long enough to become a villain I guess.

    • They know the movie is going to flop big time because it's trash. They put agenda over telling a good story. The best they can say about the movie is that they arbitrarily changed race and gender of most of the characters for forced diversity, two men are shown kissing, and there are nice shots of the outdoors. That's all nice, Kevin, but what's it about? What can you tell me about the story, setting, or characters? _Crickets_ They would have released a trailer by now if it were actually a movie capable of being hyped up. They are hiding their embarrassment until the last moment. Then, when everyone laughs at how terrible it is and it doesn't make any money, the media and Disney employees will rant and rave about imaginary -ists and -phobes.
