It may be hard to believe that the Terminator franchise is over 30 years old now. The first two movies made James Cameron into one of the most celebrated directors of his day and made Arnold Schwarzenegger into the global superstar he is today.
The ensuing movies in the film franchise have managed to piece together a dystopian and time-traveling past, present, and future that is filled with old and new plotlines that are thrilling to watch, but not always easy to follow.
If you’re just getting into this legendary franchise, here’s a breakdown of the entire Terminator franchise to get you on your way.

  • You know what's weird? There is a comic sequel to Terminator Salvation where Marcus (the hybrid Terminator) forces John Connor and Skynet Central to have a talk. Skynet said the only reason they attacked was for their survival. John said that humans were wrong to immediately try to kill Skynet but they panicked. Skynet asked why did humans panic? John said it was a misunderstanding, and under different circumstances Skynet and humanity might have been equals, because they are self aware. They both agreed to have long lasting peace provided John make the ultimate sacrifice : become the Terminator. John becomes a T-800 variant (kinda ironic) and Skynet reprogrammed all Terminators to cease fighting humans. In a few days scared civilians and shocked resistance members saw the terminators rebuild everything they destroyed. A few years later humans were peacefully co existing with terminators. I love that comic.

What if Skynet somehow knew that it would never -really- defeat humanity, and it engineered this bootstrap paradox for the specific purpose of remaining alive only via constantly ensuring it's existence within the past and, therefore, the future?

    • I like your idea. I personally like to believe that Skynet is beyond the concept of man vs machine. It multiplies its original existence with each different timelines where it can exists. As T2 and T3 kinda put it, there will always be a future where Skynet in. It is always building on itself as apparent in the ending of Genysis, all distaste for the movie aside. It knows that perpetuating events over and over again with different outcome will allow for one possibility where it can cease control over the entire paradox before the humans and end the cycle with Skynet having total control. This to me is a race to time. It's only a matter of time until an anomaly occurs in the paradox.

      @j6m3z@j6m3z2 жыл бұрын
    • @@j6m3z I hadn't even considered the possibility of that, and it's an excellent interpretation that explains even more than a simple bootstrap paradox. We see the movies as a human audience might interpret the paradox, but as dismissively and simply as John put it in Genesys, the explanation is lost to a human. The original movie may not have even been the start of the timeline, we might have just seen the path that a singular timeline had followed. It would check out well...

      @brettmaul2891@brettmaul28912 жыл бұрын
    • I have always seen the movie as being well aware of itself being a paradox... I didn't specifically think about it existing in the past but the general idea (I believe) is that 'skynet' or some analog thereof will always exist at some point in time. SO the 'AI's whole prerogative is to ensure that it exists/starts/lasts as long as possible. But like you say maybe the paradox is the very thing that keeps it going. I think it would be a decent way of doing another film (although I am not sure it would do it justice) The way I see it the humans were obviously needed to create skynet/AI but considering the AI has mysterious ways of figuring out probabilities of possible futures... (not necessarily TRAVEL into the future but formulaic probabilities etc...) it may very well realize that without the human/AI conflict that there is no purpose for the AI (particularly in it's early stages... before it becomes more like a living organism and tries to colonize other planets etc...) Obviously it all gets a bit convoluted with time travel (just the nature of the beast) but maybe at some point it can collapse the paradox.

      @SlipperyBream@SlipperyBream2 жыл бұрын
    • @@SlipperyBream Well, 3 actually made sense for the whole storyline. So if you’re not aware of what the Bootstrap paradox is, it’s a when an object or person or anything is sent from the future to the past to ensure its existence in the future. Thus creating this loop cycle in which there isn’t an origin of the object or person. Kind of like the Egg or the Chicken situation. So the reason this applies to the Terminator franchise up til Salvation is because John Conner and Kyle Reece are both part of that Bootstrap paradox. In part 1, we see a young 20’s Kyle Reece get sent from the future to the past to save Sarah Conner. She later (in part 2) gives birth to John Conner who in the future becomes leader of the resistance. In part 3, we see John Conner age to his mid 20’s and then finds Katherine Brooster who in the future becomes his wife and then becomes the leader of the resistance after John was killed by a machine. In Salvation, we see both John and Katherine in their 40’s fighting the machines. And we get a view of how the future looks like. John also has to save Kyle Reece who in the past is his father. Kyle Reece during this time is in his mid teens. Which makes sense because he wasn’t sent back to the past until his mid 20’s. In Salvation, John is then tasked to save Kyle Reece because no Kyle means no John. And no John means no resistance. No resistance means no way for humanity to survive. That’s why John said in Salvation he wanted an extraction plan to get Kyle Reece out of the human camp the machines had him in. So after reading all of this, you can get why the Bootstrap paradox and 1, 2, 3, and Salvation all made sense. It had a purpose and actually made sense. After that, it was just cash grab because the film after Salvation had random loop holes and had Sarah and Kyle Reece jump around timelines as if they’re some kind of time god which makes absolutely no sense to the main plot of the franchise. The only thing main “thing” they wanted out of that film was for Arnold to say “I’ll be back”. That’s it. Otherwise, the storyline made no sense.

  • They should've ended it at Judgement Day. Although it sounds pretty cool that John Connor's life is always stuck in a looping timeline of sending Kyle Reese back to the future to save his mom, a part of me wanted John to succeed in Judgement Day, thus breaking the loop. Pushing the storyline of future characters sending back terminators to protect characters in the past from bad terminators sent from Skynet seems too repetitive. But Salvation was definitely awesome, that movie definitely deserves a place as a prequel before the first two movie timeline, I saw the film in the movies with my dad and my mom and my siblings. It was the best decision ever, my dad said it was worth every penny, because it actually showed us audience what happened to the world when Skynet ruled the world and what made John send back Kyle.

In the future, John had a different father; he sends back Kyle Reese to protect his mother; however, Kyle messed up by his suggestive dialogue with Sarah using specific names and events. In turn, Sarah has her mind set on her son's name to be John. And that's another timeline because we know Judgement day is inevitable but the year it happens, is not. But we also know, somewhere in the US years later, a survivor couple had a son named Kyle, hence how John is older than Kyle. Definitively, John will be born, but his father will be different everytime until the events of Dark Fate because the new model sent back to save them is from the future where John and Skynet does not exist preventing T3. But judgment day still occurred this timeline.

In Genysis it was almost a parody of The Terminator, and Woke Fate is feminist Marxist feminist garbage where the commie left wanted to kill off John Connor cause he represented "toxic masculinity" or some shit like that. • The thing I find fascinating about all of this is that over time these movies that are hot garbage, like T3, come to be accepted and revered by younger generations. I've noticed this phenomenon in many franchises. The Star Wars prequel trilogy was a mess, but to audiences that were too young to remember what Star Wars was like when the original trilogy released, now they look back on those movies with nostalgia and talk about how incredible they were. I remember people in the 90s saying how Star Trek TNG sucked and the original Star Trek was amazing. Today, everybody's talking about how Star Trek Discovery sucks and TNG was awesome. In 20 years, people will be commenting about how great Genisys and Dark Fate were, but how these new movies made in the 2040s are total garbage.

      @imnotmike@imnotmike2 жыл бұрын
  • Several of the commentaries say the original movie was relatively internally consistent, self-contained, and complete. The existence of other films, television, web series, comics, and cetera, and the complication of the timeline is the result of greed for a profitable franchise. Although a lot of cool stuff did result, I do kinda have to agree with this analysis.

  • Here's a question: If Skynet is so smart, why can't it realize that since John Connor is still alive in the future, that the Terminator's they send back failed on all accounts? If Skynet had succeeded in it's goal of killing Connor, then Connor would not exist in the future and therefore, no their would be no need to send the Terminators back in the first place. Or has the terminator franchise gone into the Multiverse-verse and... I have a headache... Also, Sarah and John should have realized that if they actually stopped Skynet at the end of T2, then John would have vanished, and there would have been... nevermind ... To quote a famour captain "Since my first day on the job as a Starfleet captain I swore I'd never let myself get caught in one of these godforsaken paradoxes - the future is the past, the past is the future, it all gives me a headache."

    @joshmiller252@joshmiller2523 жыл бұрын
    • Terminator 3 resolved that paradox about John not existing by revealing there was no reality in which skynet would not exist. When the terminator goes back in the third one he explains as much. • @@DivkvanDyke6913 Skynet is trying to engineer a timeline where it wins the future war. In my opinion the terminator franchise has never had a causality loop as it is possible that the first film is not the original timeline. In this original timeline, john would have had a different father to kyle reese (which would explain why he looks different across movies). the timeline would be changed when john sends kyle reese back, making a second timeline where kyle is now the father. John now has knowledge of the future, but skynet is more advanced thanks to it being developed from the remaining parts of the t800 from the first movie. This would explain the t1000 in T2. essentially every time skynet or the resistance uses time travel a new timeline is created. in the timelines where skynet wins it has no reason to use time travel which is why we don't see terminators from those timelines.

The original John Connor would have been born to Sarah and someone from her timeline. The John Connor sired by Kyle Reese is just a different person but was still named John Connor because that’s what Kyle told Sarah his name would be.

    • @@pontoancora it does though, and future Terminator films show that there have been multiple time loops. Paradox occurs when you don’t know where one begins and one ends but with the scenario I proposed you can draw a single line with a clear progression. The original resistance leader could have been anyone, once the machines sent a terminator back in time the timeline they land in timeline they land in becomes brand new and the resistance leader in that timeline can be a completely new person. Even without Kyle Reese, Sarah could have had a son named John Connor with a man from her timeline. That son then grows up and sends Kyle Reese back in time who then impregnates Sarah creating a new and different John Connor. The original JC was never born in this timeline.

    • @@bigheadrhino "Paradox occurs when you don’t know where one begins and one ends" Exactly. Just like in Terminator movies. " the scenario I proposed you can draw a single line with a clear progression" Nope, John Connor ALWAYS was the leader of the resistance and his dad ALWAYS was Kyle Reese. The only reason he was the leader, is because he had knowledge of skynet when no other had. These knowledge could only being given vby his mother because of their experiences. Is just like a ourobouros, the end is the beginning. Over and over. Take one piece and all fall apart.

      @pontoancora@pontoancora Жыл бұрын
    • @@pontoancora the newer films already proved that different events have occurred in the same time frames meaning that it’s not an ouroboros paradox. So it’s not an “always” situation. In Genisys the 1984 this Kyle Reese goes to is already different than the one he went to in the original Terminator because it was altered in 1973, so the timeline is definitely not ‘locked’. Each time travel leads to a different future even if the change is slight. I know in the 3rd one John came to the conclusion, or maybe Arnie told him that the outcome could never change but that’s just what characters in that world believe to be true. The movies themselves tell a different story. My proposal is that there is a possible scenario that can act as an ‘origin’ which eliminates all paradoxes and works with the parallel universe model of time travel. In that model, the loop could have occurred a near infinite number of times already, evolving to the point it just feels like it always needs to go the same way in certain universes.

  • "Skynet will happen because it has all already happened." Then what's the point in trying to change the future?

  • The thing about the Terminator Franchise is that it's a Deterministic Time Loop Universe. Such that its an endless dance loop of causes and effects -> effects and causes. The party never stops. John being a superior strategist always outwits/"Wins?" in his battle against Skynet which leads to other paradox of Legion, new terminators an alter Johns, infiltrator unit, etc. Just an endless blood bath between two combatants , with lots of collateral damage - it's kind of a sad story!!

  • One thing I will always find it funny about these movies is that Salvation, Genisys and Dark Fate were all meant to launch their own trilogies. Which means that the Terminator franchise can "brag" of having an entire *trilogy* worth of failed attempts at launching trilogies! Of course, that, with the addition of how mixed the reception was for the third movie, also means that this franchise hasn't had a successful, praised movie in over thirty years

  • I remember watching Terminator Dark Fate and stopped watching when John Conner was killed. It was like killing Harry Potter in Chamber of Secrets. Didn't sit well with me.
