@cameronreece55694 жыл бұрын
What some people don't tell you, however, is that 4wd can also lock your wheels up. If slipperiness exceeds your grip, you will begin to slide regardless of whether you are using engine braking or standard braking. In icy conditions, stick with standard braking because you can modulate that much more easily and smoothly than engine braking. Yes, on big, hills that can get your brakes pretty hot. But if it is that icy out you should be avoiding hills like that to begin with. Something my dad (a pilot) used to tell me sums it up very well: "A superior pilot uses his superior judgment to avoid situations which may require his superior skills."

@@tml184 lol Tell that to the new Rubicon owner who took his dad and two sons up above larch mountain and got stuck in a wide spot in the road at maybe a 7 percent road incline. When I went up past him in my old Chevy van I was a bit concerned. When I came back 30 minutes later the kids were done having fun and we're starting to whine and he was closer to going over the edge into the big trees than earlier and he looked defeated. No cell service up there. It actually sorta a giant switch back right before grouse trail or some such wide spot in the dirt trail. My van had 235/85r16 on it. Blizzak of course because they make a huge difference in snow. I hobbled my winch and a spare battery and chain together and winched him back up on the packed trail. His jeep was brand new. He had no recovery gear with him. I hadn't yet hardwired or hard mounted my winch at the time.

Yes it is possible to go into and out of 4Lo while stopped but there may be difficulty getting clutch teeth engaged. Quoted from my 2014 Wrangler Sport 4dr manual page 442: "Shifting into or out of 4L is possible with the vehicle completely stopped; however, difficulty may occur due to the mating teeth not being properly aligned. Several attempts may be required for clutch teeth alignment and shift completion to occur. The preferred method is with the vehicle rolling at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h). Avoid attempting to engage or disengage 4L with the vehicle moving faster than 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h)." Trust me - this works. That aside - I live in NJ and there wasn't anything I couldn't drive through this winter in 4HI with the stock tires; never needed 4LO. Jeeps are way more capable than a lot of people give them credit for.

Fellas think about the jeep tires used traveling over the Alps in heavy snow, thick mud, ruts, and water during WW2. Those tires were tall and narrow with deep grooves. Today you can't find a tall tire that doesn't get wider with height. Wide tires push the snow, narrow tires have less resistance while cutting through the snow, mud or water. Get yourself a good set a meats.

@wranglerlife4ever424 жыл бұрын
WhiteNuckle ChargerR/T mail trucks are no longer jeeps and haven’t been since the 80s. That mail truck is a Grumman. It is based off a 1982 S10 with a quad 4 and auto. It has the rear suspension of a 4wd 82 s10 and the front end of a 2WD 82 S10 (which is why the track-with is different in the front vs the rear. The last one was built in the mid 90s with a scheduled 20 year life cycle. However due to the US Post Office being broke, they have now extended the life cycle to 30 years. Many of them are on their 3rd or 4th engine and trans with well over 350,000 miles on them (I’ve seen some that are pushing 500,000 miles). It costs the post office $300 million to repair the fleet every year, but it would cost $5 billion to replace the fleet. I know all this cause my shop fixes the 2 local post offices’ trucks (as the post office outsources the repair and maintenance of their fleet to independent repair shops, though they supply the parts as needed).

Neither were any amount that I would of worried about if I was driving my camaro. It’s disappointing. The snow is the only chance I have to have some fun in my Jeep since there are no trails that are close. The state park owns most of the woods around here (no motorized vehicles on trails. 638 acres and you better be walking or on a horse or bicycle if you want to enjoy them) and the rest is privately owned and they don’t like people on their property. The closest OVR is 1.5hrs away and costs a fortune for what it is.

Second curve it was non responsive, straighten out the curve, went off the road down hill until I arrived at another road. The snow drift on the oft side of the second road stopped me! Next stop would have been down a hill, through a fence, and into a pasture with the cattle! Switched to 2WD and no further problems. Seems that when i slowed down in the curves the engine compression in 4WD caused loss of traction.😳

Me too!! SATX!!
Watching from Texas as well
Same! 4WD on a Whataburger run now!
The thing I use my 4 Low most for is going down hill in snow where I might encounter ice. I find going 4 MPH without having to ride the brake very helpful.
4w low helps with ice?
@@bigcsbigbrother3685 yes and no hes saying for down hill using engine braking instead of your regular brakes and locking the tires up and then you lose steering
That’s the best tutorial I have seen so far. Great job keep more videos coming. I just bought a new Jeep and didn’t know how to engage the 4wheel drive now I know. Thank you.
Alejandro Bermudez the first thing to do when you buy any vehicle is read the owners manual cover to cover (or download it and read it). A lot, if not all of your questions will be answered.
Great info, I wish everyone in the snowy areas would watch this! I watch so many people with 4 wheel drive think they are invincible.
I never drove in the snow, but will be this holiday visiting family. Thanks for explaining how to use the 4L and 4H. It's definitely gives me the confident to tackle the snowy road.
Very educational! I'm finishing the paperwork at the dealer to buy my 1st wrangler the 2016 unlimited and seeing as I am running on 1 hour of sleep and it's about 5am due to my excitement, I am glad I ran across this video. :)
PrinceJuvy how did the jeep turn out?
It turned out Amazing! I got the Sport, but since getting it I put 33s on it and lifted it 2.5 inches. Drove it through a dried up creek bed before I lifted it which was pretty fun. I do not regret my purchase :D
PrinceJuvy still love it?
PrinceJuvy I just bought a 2007 Sahara
Congratulations! Don't forget to practice up on your Jeep wave? lol
Thank you. Very helpful. I'm about to take my 08 wrangler for a drive through the snow during this Blizzard of '16.
Step one: Make sure your 4 wheel drive has winter tires on it. Trust me all tires are NOT the same. Step two: Drive slow for your conditions, well within the limits of your tires. Always remember some idiot out there will be driving in the snow on summer tires. They will slide into you or in front of you. Look out for them.
Wranglers tires are perfect for the snow especially the Rubicon ones. No need for snow tires.
@@consaka1 My 33in BF Goodrich 285 KO2's are amazing in the snow though. Very strange that anyone would put snow tires on a Wrangler.
Jeeps are way more capable than a lot of people give them credit for.
musicman8942 I own a 2012 wrangler sport manual. when the 4Lo is needed. in what gear I should launch? I was told to do it in 3rd gear. is it right to do so?
Thank you for the tips and advice. It really helped me out.
Thank you for this video. I purchased my first jeep 2015 JKU a month or so ago and have not yet went through snow, can't wait lol
We got our first Jeep Wrangler late last year, and I had wondered about the "hop", but now I know it's a normal thing. Thanks for the tips!
Got 10 inches in St. Louis today. Thank you for this video. I’ve never used my 4L before so this was very helpful. ☺️
new to the jeep life....thank you
Excellent job on the multi-camera video editing! Your edits are smooth as silk. Having worked with editing suites & footage blending from different angles myself, I know how much post-production work you had to endure. A seemingly simple 7m:22s vid can take in excess of 6 hrs work at the computer. And all that in addition to handling the Wrangler like a boss! 😎
Pretty awesome info. Got my wrangler a few months ago and it's been awesome in the Massachusetts blizzards and storms. Haven't had to use 4low yet because it seems 4high just goes through everything. I will try to engage the 4low one of these days and see what it can do. Thanks for the info.
When you need to use 4lo the first time you're gonna be so glad you have it and amazed at what it can do! Glad I helped!
Thanks for sharing this knowledge. I just got a 17’ Jeep Wrangler and I was worried I was going to need to put Sandbags in the back For winter here in MA. cuz my rear was fishtailing in rain when was going around a bend a couple weeks ago.
Love my 2015 wrangler unlimited. Had 8inches about 3 weeks ago drove around everywhere in 2wd no prob!! Love it!
Cool thanks for the demonstration.
Thank you for the great explanation.
Excellenbt, informative video lesson. I just recently got a 2012 Wrangler and am glad to learn a few things about how to pilot it best.
I just came across this channel and I am getting my Jeep in 2 weeks! Definitely a great reference!
+Elliott Walsh did you get it?
+Fidel Castro Yes I did! 2013 Freedom edition unlimited! Does really look like the freedom edition anymore!
Nice! I'm still on the hunt for that perfect one.
Sweet! It took me about a month to find it! If you have Instagram @ElliottWalsh94 and I'd love to see your jeep when you get it!
+Elliott Walsh Congrats on the new Jeep Walsh!
Very helpful, thank you!
Nicely done....4wd Low is the awesome stuff of 4WD vehicles.
Thank you very specific and concise instructions.
I got stuck in the snow once in my Jeep Wrangler. 4Hi, 4Lo, Front & Rear Lockers didn't help. Glad I had my winch. :)
Only once? You should get out more.
Rookie
Why you guys such assholes lol
@@joesantos7196 its a jeep thing you wouldnt understand
@@camarofreak68 wow havent heard that corny line before
Thank You. Well articulated. I just got a 2020 Rubicon. So excited to “conquer” the Maine terrain this winter.
M M Nvm Ll ok lol Bbnml looks kn I’ll
Shoulda got a TJ
This was really helpful. Thanks friend.
Thank you, for explaining, This will be a first winter for me driving the 2016 jeep sport . I needed to see what the Jeep can do. 👏👏👏
this video is a blessing. I didn’t think I would get any results about this
You are Aaaawsome!!! Thanks so much for this video.
loll, just cause you got 4wd, doesn't make you indestructible LOL!!!
😂😂😂
Thank you for this video. Brand new to MT and had my first snow this morning. Within minutes I was stuck spinning my tires at a stop sign. This will be helpful when I get stuck tomorrow. ;-)
Biggest problem get rid of the MT tires, they're junk for anything but mud they're Mud Terrain tires not snow terrain tires, they're terrible for snow/ice. Buy a set of winter rated tires not M&S, but actual snow tires and you'll find yourself very rarely needing 4WD at all.
Thanks for the demo.... I have an old 1999 Cherokee and now I can take it places!! Good vid!
Very informative. Thanks for sharing.
Ok thanks for letting me know, I'd hate to find out the hard way so glad I asked.
Thank you so much for this informative video!!❤️🙏🏽
Thank you for the information, I need this
This video was so informative, thank you!
Hey thanks for the video! Question, is your exhaust stock? If not what did you install?
Good job. thank you! I am getting my first Jeep Wrangler X. Bob
Congrats!
Try to get the TJ rather than the new JKs trust me you won't regret it! Oh and don't forget to wave ;)
+Vance Dunsworth 2012 and up JKs have the new 3.6L that makes 285 HP. It's incredible especially with higher gear ratio. Makes the jeep comes alive.
+Christopher Robles Thank you for your input, greatly appreciated! I bought a 2007 Jeep Wrangler X, 38,450 miles. It has a 3.8L V6, 6 speed manual. I am not sure of the HP. I do love my Jeep! :-)
Just earned yourself a new subscriber, Clear, concise information , Thank you,
Thank you so very much, Tom! This really helped me!
Hi sir . Just say ( thank you ) for show us this video how to use 4 hi and 4 Lo . I own a 2014 rubicon but haven't use once in 4 wd yet . Sincerely . Shawn
Hello . Great video. One question... do I need to deflate my tires to a specific PSI when driving in snow? I have 33” KO2 BF Goodrich
Is it ok to switch into 4 wheel low when stopped, or should you be moving slowly?
The mail truck is like “yeah I do it all in 2wd in my RHD Jeep”
I know all this cause my shop fixes the 2 local post offices’ trucks (as the post office outsources the repair and maintenance of their fleet to independent repair shops, though they supply the parts as needed).
recently bought the wrangler willy edition. i live in MN which has really bad winters. So in the ice roads do you recommend 4 low??
Good video for people new to 4x4/jeeps. One should have pointed out, however, that you should disengage 4wd when pulling out onto a paved road that's clear. Even with open diffs, turning on a dry surface causes unwanted strain on the system
The 4XE can be driven in 4 high at any time. Winter and summer.
Thank you so much for this vid and demo
that exhaust sounds good!
This is my first Jeep (Wrangler Sport) my dream car, but I reply would like to thank you. I feel like you have taught me how to drive...
I'd also recommend a small or folding shovel to dig a 45% trench if really stuck, instead of spinning wheels in 4 low!
4L is not to get unstuck but to clear obstacles with CONTROL and not speed, like going over a hill and not over shooting it causing you to fall in a ditch.
Thank you. At least 1 person understands what's going on.
I thought 4L helps you get unstuck when 4H can't help you get out. That is what I heard, but I tried to get unstuck using 4L and failed but I don't get the opportunity to use all wheel drive very much anyway so my knowledge isn't to great on the subject. No trails around me to practice just dirt roads like a couple of my video's on my channel.
4 low is definitely for getting unstuck in something like sand. Need the additional torque.
4 low is for any situation where you need precise control with limited tire spin, i.e. getting unstuck, navigating rough tight terrain, shit like that
Thanks for the video. Definitely a big help for a noob like me.
Sweet ! I just moved to Montana for fire season 2020 and I just recently got a Jeep Wrangler and I’m nervous to drive around but boy will it be a experience!
man the new wranglers are so Luxurious.
awesome! I run a 97 tj sport :) ive had it since 99 ahaha
Great Video. Question #1: We're getting some snow here today. I put it into 4H on the way to work. As I was backing into my parking space, it was like all locked up. I had a hell of a time parking. What's that all about? Question #2 How do I switch from 2H to 4H if I'm stopped. Stuck on a hill? I have a 2020 Sahara automatic. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the video! I thought there was an issue with my Jeep when it jumped a bit when turning on normal road. Appreciate the information! Keep up the great content Brother!
Good Video,thanks
Most useful video instruction on youtube. Thank you, sir 😎👍🏼
Thank you for such an awesome video
Really helpful. Thanks man
that first comment about braking is what i always say to friends with SUVs. they think they are indestructible because they can start faster, and they always forget that they also have to brake.
Ehh the ditch will stop their uncontrolled slide LOL.
Preparing for Lake Tahoe winter here.
Couldn’t find anything in the owners manual that says if it needs to be in neutral or parked for switching from 2WH to 4WH, only that it should be done stopped or going up to 50mph to switch. If I do it in park could I run into problems?
What gear was this filmed in mostly?
Ty for the Advice ✅
great video man thank u
What exhaust is on your jeep? Sounds good!
With the pedals and the steering wheel???
Thank you sincerely....very helpful advice! :)
what kind of tires are you running?
what tyres you had on?
So when I drive in Snow do I have to use 4wd? I live in an area woth very rare snow and I am not certain of when I need to use it? I've had my jeep for a few years but I don't use the 4wd much. It rarely snows and i just got a tone of it.
Really enjoying the videos. Just got my 08 Wrangler last month.
Welcome to the jeep club #jeepwave
Mine started burning oil at around 60-70k ???? '08 X unlimited...
well explained thanks alot
Thanks for this
Do you have to stay in 1st or 2nd gear in 2L?
So with 4low with a manual are you supposed to be in neutral to put it in? I’m new lol
I use low gearing and engine braking to slow down with light touches of the brake pedal. Forget ABS for a second...if you hit the brakes to hard and lock up the wheels, not only are you sliding but now you can't turn. The front wheels need to be spinning for the car/truck/jeep to turn.
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH...I have a 2017 Jeep Wrangler and I didn't get a chance to use my 4 wheel drive yet this year (2018-2019)...I was trying to engage it without applying the clutch...I went outside right after watching this and it worked!!!!
Sue Ackehurst it snowed twice since I bought my TJ a little over a year ago (the afternoon I bought it and once this year).
When in 4 wheel drive hight should you turn off the traction button?? Also should you turn it off in 2H??? Please help me out. New Jeep owner
Do you lower pressure for ice?
Super helpful Thanks
What a great video
thanks I learned a lot
I have a 2015 wrangler sport 6-speed manual too, however I don't engage clutch when shifting from RWD to 4H, nor do I do it when I switch back from 4H to RWD. I don't think the manual says you need to use it either. I only press it when switching from 4H to N, and to 4L. I know the manual says you can roll up to 2-3 mph when switching to Low Range, but for me it's best to do it when completely stopped.
Yep no need to use the clutch to shift between 2WD or 4WD high range, only for going into or out of low range.
what gears does your JK have?
I like how you have the special stop signs that are for rolling stops, no full stop required. :D
honestly 4 lo I usually use on the trails all the time. but, we do hit hard trails
Was driving a 4WD suburban on a road that was ice covered with new snow on top. First curve the suburban's steering was having very little effect, but made it OK.
Been saving for 7ys. Think I’m finally ready to buy 2017 rubicon or maybe the new rubicon JL😁👍 going to be fun in the snow ❄️
What year model is the car?
Anybody what if my rear drive shaft was broken and I only use front wheel drive on the highway 4H would I get excessive wear on the transfer case and front differential? Or would it run just fine?
What year is that wrangler
