Hey folks!
In this Restoration Video I restored an old 'Tarantella' Razor Blade Sharpener. The marks on the tool say 'DRP' which means 'German Reichs Patent', so this tool must be at least 80 years old!
I purchased this Razor Blade Sharpener online and the condition was bad. So I restored it! I started with disassembling the whole tool, and took care of every single part. I used sandblasting, filing, sanding, painting and many other restoration techniques to get this old beauty to its former state!
I hope you have fun with the video! If you have any questions on the used tools, materials or the processes, write it in the comment section - i´ll try to answer as soon as possible!

One helpful tip I've learned for working with cold bluing solutions, heat the metal to be blued to about 70-75°C. It makes the bluing solution get deeper into the steel and is less apt to leave streaking. It also helps the oil get deeper into the metal for curing the cold blue. It's helped me quite a few times to get parts "just right" after fighting them looking terrible after cold bluing room temperature steel.
Hey man, thank you so much for this tip, I really appreciate and will try it 🙂👍
@@misterpatina if cold bluing is toxic and it is a good idea to wear gloves while applying it, some of the toxic chemicals must persist after it is dry, no?
Good to know
At that point why not just heat it another few hundred degrees and rust blue it in oil? I thought cold bluing was made so you didn’t have to worry about heating the steel to a specific temp?
Yeah I thought the same too lol, cold bluing but.. hot?
As a mechanic, I wholeheartedly approve of the massive amount of brake cleaner used in this video. Absolutely marvelous.
Haha, theres never enough!
Brake cleaner is like liquid duct tape
Yaeyyyy finally a new video of my favorite friend-with-a-restoration-channel-on-youtube-who-is-also-named-kai. Now we can start our secret project challenge 😜😍❤️
Hold up... Your secret what??? You had our curiosity, but now you have our attention
You’re such a weird person but I love you! Yes, BUT there will be a video on my second channel the next days…wait, what?
@@LB-oh2bw pssssshhhhhh 😄
Wait a second how did I suddenly become the weird one? I present the court exhibit 1: a specific video frame at 6:56. Does that ring any bells Mister P 📹🔔🕷️?
Secondly wait another second regarding your second statement, what second channel are you talking about?
i love the way all the metal sparkles when it gets sandblasted, makes me happy.
Who else watched the entire video wondering what was glued to that bakelite component? Great restore. Love the channel.
Grandfather had one of these...he always used to sharpen his blades on a piece of newspaper.
Hello from France Beautiful object. The ancients knew how not to waste. It was better for the planet, now we have disposable razors, once used they go in the trash.
I totally agree...! Merci!
The spinning motion sharpening is cool. Guess that's where the name "Tarantella" comes from (referring to the dance, not the spider).
Oh wow, that makes sense! Thanks! :-)
The dance referred to the spider 👍😉
Not sure if it’s something different, but the close ups of sand blasting look really good! Also, love a good spinny boy
Thanks a lot, iam glad you enjoyed!
I thought I'd never see one of those again, I remember being a kid in the 60's and we had one in a junk drawer. At the time we didn't know what it was. Dad told us it was his dad's and it sharpens his razor blades and that all he knew about it.
Love me some mister patina
The little tarantula jump scare was very funny! I love all the little jokes you add to the videos
Haha, I couldn’t resist here 😄 Thanks!
In the Italian town Tarantos (from Tarantas) it was believed that the 'lycosa tarantula' (a wolf spider named after the town and not to be confused with what we know as tarantulas of today) had a highly venomous bite which would cause a condition known as tarantism. The original tarantella was a graceful courtship dance whereas the tarantella associated with the spider was a frenetic and said to last hours or days with music played to match the pace of the victim
That was one of the most satisfying sand blasting footage I think I've ever seen.
Hey man, iam glad you enjoyed! Thanks for your support! 🙂❤️
Excellent tool
Thanks! :-)
Nice tip with the washer to protect the handle.
How funny you doing a razor blade sharpener. I hadn't seen one of these in years. My Dad use to have one of those double sided razor blade sharpners. I'm pretty old now but I can remember it from when I was 5 wondering what it was. At 7 I thought it was a cigarette roller as some people had these fancy rollers. A couple of years later I finally as what it was.
Reminds me of our next door neighbour during the war. He always sharpened his razor blades with some sort of accessory. You knew when he was about to shave because you could hear the “clip clop” of his razor blade flipping over at the end of each stroke on his strop.
This guy put a twist on the end when polishing that shaft.
I really never knew about this item. How convenient to was back then. Thanks for video
The end results are DOPE AF, @misterpatina!
Spinny boy! Lol Another good show.
I appreciate this as someone who collects old razors and accessories. I have a few different types of sharpeners/strops, but have never seen this style.
That fight club level splice image of a tarantula was epic!
Haha!

I've never seen that style razor sharpener. This restoration came out beautiful. And the simple thing of putting a washer on the rod to protect the wooden handle falls under the category of "why didn't I think of that". 👍👍
Thanks a lot! Never stop learning is a good thing...:-)
Awesome tool and great restoration. It was cool to see the old days tool where mass production was not present, therefore people had to care for their razor blades.
Enjoyable video. Thanks 👍
Iam glad you enjoyed!
idk why i love this thing though. clever lil design
Oh that was surprising for sure. Never heard or seen anything like that, I knew Gillette blade sharpener did exist in Italy (and surely elsewhere as well) until stainless steel blades lasting 10x more than carbon steel were introduced. But this 'stropping' tool is nice and surprising! Great work as usual, really enjoy your restorations.
Thanks buddy! Yeah, back in the days it was more economic to sharpen the old blades, instead of buying new ones. I guess that’s why I like this old stuff so much. Thanks!
All the way to the end, I still had no idea what this little thing was for -- a one-handed stropping tool?! Really amazing, I had no idea such a thing might exist!
Haha, i first didn’t know how to handle it because the leather was missing. 4 days of research and I knew 😄
I enjoyed the video. I am leaving this comment to support your work. I am subscribed. Thank you.
Hey Wiley, thank you so much!
LOOKIN' GOOD..
Thanks!
Well done.
Thanks!
It's good to see the original doce de leite grease reused at 14:45.
I love your restoration work. It is obvious that you have experience and the necessary tools. Congratulations ❗
Perfekt Job thank jou for the Video very good
Thank you so much!
Oh WOW!
Greetings from Petersburg! Interesting tool for blade sharpening. I have never seen such a thing. But the more interesting your work. You manage to find and improve ordinary but amazing things. Thanks buddy! True, this time for some reason you did not restore two screws. And, unfortunately, I just now saw that I forgot to like the video "1 YEAR OF RECOVERY in 1 VIDEO | BEST OF 2022". I wrote a comment but forgot to like. That's probably why you didn't read my comment. I fixed my mistake (better late than never).
Haha, hey Alex! Iam glad you enjoyed! The 2 screws werent forgotten, i just cold blued them offcam. You can see one screw in the "zinc head" part, while sandblasting. The screws were in good condition, so i just didnt show the cold bluing process. Hey, man, dont worry ! Iam pretty thankful for your support..!
@@misterpatina Bro, mach weiter schöne Sachen. Gesundheit und Frieden für Sie und Ihre Familie! Kopf hoch, die Vernunft wird eines Tages siegen.
At first, it didn't look that effective but I can see the principal behind it. Great restore!
Thanks a lot!
Wha I have never seen this before it's amazing engeneering tool
Super 👍 😎
That was cool 😎👍
My dear Mister P! Thank you very much, brat! Keep up your great work!!!
Oohhhh Spasibo bratan! 🙂👍
I have no idea that such a thing exist/existed. Just throw away a dull razor and get new one... This is brilliant. And fantastic video! Good job!
Thanks a lot! Iam glad you like my work!
Very Nice!

Here's another tool I didn't know existed. Great work
Thanks 🙂
Pretty cool.
Thanks! :-)
איזה כיף זה!
Thanks!
It’s perfect
WOW! Never knew such a device existed. Another fantastic video.
Thanks!
Try using glass bead for your blasting material, it is easier on the metal, though a bit slower, and leaves a finer finish.
Unusual device I never seen or heard of before. Learn something new everyday. Thumbs up!
Thanks Gary! :-)
i dont think a single craftsman would disagree, that the most Loathed tool in the whole caboodle, is the wirebrush when scrubbing small parts.
Sweet
Nice! I had no idea that devices like this existed.
There are several different devices, I think there will be more in my upcoming videos 😉
That is awesome how you restored the razor sharpener. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Excellent work.
Thanks George!
Nice vid. It saves my sunday-breakfast ! Thx !

Fantastic tool (I've never seen anything like it before), and fantastic restoration. Bravo.

Absolutely beautiful restoration as always, Mr. Patina! I love the old "DRP" patent "Deutsches Reichtspatent" I have always had a soft spot for razor blade sharpeners and this one has a very clever mechanism Love the video :-D
Hey Martin, thank you so much! Haha, somehow these little beasts catch me, too. I have another one, but in way better condition :-) thanks for your support Mr.! :-)

Another very interesting restoration Mr P!
This was a really interesting piece - I was trying to guess how it worked and was surprised by the demonstration; but you could see how it would be more practical to pack in your toiletries case than a full size strop. Very enjoyable and yes - I did clock that tarantula😆
okay but how many blades could you fit in the space this thing would take up 🤣🤣
