In this Video I restored an old Tap Holder!
I purchased this Tap Holder online to give it a nice restoration. It didnt work properly, since the chucks of the Tap Holder were pretty rusty and stuck.
So I disassembled it in every part and started the restoration. Goal of this restoration was a nice Satin Shine finish on the metal parts and to let some signs of history on the wooden parts.
After hours of filing, sanding and finishing i gave every metal part a nice nickel plating. The wooden parts were finished with some linseed oil. I made some small parts offcam, for example some pins, springs and a wooden block for closing the end of the handle.
When the restoration of this old Tap Holder was done, it worked perfectly fine again.
You might can see some small parts with a little bit of rust on it - dont worry, this rust is a result of the cold bluing and will disappear by adding some grease.
I hope you like it!
I hope you have fun with the video! If you have any questions on the used tools, materials or the processes, write it in the comment section - i´ll try to answer as soon as possible!

Nice work. I remember as a child watching a grandfather take items apart at his unfinished basement workbench. He placed multiple layers of old bath towels on the floor beneath the vise. I asked if the towels were there to protect falling items from damage. He said, no, they were there to prevent grandma from yelling at him when items made noise when hitting the concrete floor. I like this memory.
Hey man, thanks for this short and heartwarming story! I really apreciate!
❤❤
Smooth like a stingray? 😄 see you tomorrow buddy. I'm so glad you used this magnificient piece in the end, wouldnt have known whats its use else. The light in your new workshop is awesome
❤😊
Thanks my beardy friend!
Those zoomed in close up shots are really cool to see. Also your filing game was on point! Very impressive stuff all around.
Thanks Elric, iam glad you enjoyed! This was the first time ive tested my new macro lense :-)
👍❤❤
Agreed on 100%
MR.PATINA, I HAVE SEEN MANY EXPERTS DOING RESTORATION 'S ON ( YOU TUBE ) BUT YOUR WORK IS OUTSTANDING BECAUSE YOUR WORKMAN SHIP IS SPEECHLESS, WITH EVERY MINUTE DETAILS.
Hey, thank you so much! Iam really glad you like my work!
❤❤
hi , the glue that you used in this restoration was one of the famous and one the best twin glue in my my country IRAN , i'm so happy that i saw it worked for you . best wishes
I love that glue! :-)
❤☺
It is a privilege watching this craftsman do his work. Absolutely brilliant.
Thanks John! :-)
That's exactly what I thought to comment while watching this video, and here it's already written. 😄 And it's not only the work. Even the filming is brilliant.
Thanks Monty! Iam really glad you guys like my work 🥳
❤👍👍
Another job that looks better than new. It did show where the "wrong" tool was used and "marked" the spot. I could watch you all day, but then I wouldn't get any of my little projects done, nice one.
Hey Wayne, youre right! Some spots were totally abused with a hammer -.- Thanks! Iam glad youre enjoying my work :-)
☺❤
You got me on every first countersinking scene
WOW¡¡. Saludos desde MÉXICO.
making that spring was probably one of the more interesting parts i'd like to see.
😊❤❤
Love watching your videos. I usually watch as I’m turning in for bed. 1 video will last me 2 days usually…something about them gets me sleepy. Thanks!
😊❤
Iam glad I could give you a new dose of calming videos 🙂
4:00 "Some filing" - if "some" means "a lot"! You totally re-finished that piece, super nice!
Haha, youre right here! Thanks!
😊😊
Ahh yes, the old "endmill in a drill chuck" One of my favorite moves to make! It's a perfect combination for (re-)installing gate latches on a cedar fence 😁
❤😊😊
Fantastic job on an old tool that now has another hundred years of work ahead of it...👍👌🇺🇸
I have watched many of this kind videos but honestly this one was more perfect and in detail
Iam glad you enjoyed!
❤👌❤
Yet another sick restoration! Way to go Mr. Patina!
I calculated that you filed on that nut for 67 hours straight, impressive work as always! 😉
👍❤
Haha, how the fork did you do that??? You’re right 😄
Welcome back 😊
Ho ho ho!
Wow! What a stunning outcome ... as always!
Mr. P, you outshone yourself here. Not only was that a lovely restoration, your videography and editing shine! Your storytelling was spot on and kept me fascinated for the whole video. Lovely, lovely, lovely. How was the new shop? It looked like everything was working, including the air gun!🤣Thanks for sharing this. Have a great day.
Hey Vickie, iam really glad you saw some differences :-) Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate! Workind in the new shop is such a upgrade, not just because of the tools, bute because i now have some real walls and a ceiling :-D Thanks for watching!
👍❤
That is a monster-sized tap holder. Thanks for the video!
It really is! Thanks for watching 🙂
❤👍
Two thumbs way Up on the Restoration !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much! :-)
❤😊
I find it interesting that the cold blue areas don't take the nickel plating... Excellent restoration!
I really had to watch this one because I've never heard of a "tap holder" before. Another great video, I love the work you do.
😊❤
Iam glad you enjoyed!
Another silk purse from a sows ear. Beautiful.
❤😊😊
What a cool tap driver. Nicely restored beyond it’s former glory.
Thanks! :-)
❤❤
I found a ratchetting tap holder in that style years ago in a garage sale and after a cleanup got it working again and for tapping holes in confined boat engine-rooms nothing comes close. Have driven M20 taps with it without too much drama. Beautiful job on this one. The Bluing and Nickel Plating contrast is so so good.
Thanks a lot, iam glad you like it :-)
❤❤
I hope the irony of a guy whose channel is called Mister Patina, taking every last atom of patina off this tool, isn't lost on anybody watching.
Yeah but my name isn’t 'Mister I leave a little Patina'
❤👌❤
Pretty certain it never looked that amazing even when brand new. I especially appreciated you keeping the history of the original wood handles. Great work!!!
Thanks Chris!
👍❤❤
I find watching these videos to be very relaxing.
👍👌❤
Excellent use of macro photography.
"Smooth Like a Stingray" is a new expression to me.😂
Haha, glad you like it!
I Liked & Shared on all my social media! I even emailed this to many of my friends. Come on Folks - - -> Let's do our part in getting this guy a Million Subs!!! 20k Views and only 2.2k Likes! What? Great Job on this Restoration !!!

Thanks a lot! :-)
I agree with others that the close up shots add to the video. Any chance you may make a matching handle for the threaded hole on the other side of the ratchet head. We can’t get enough of your projects
Nice close up shots. Painstaking filing and sanding.
Thanks!
❤😊
Loving those macro shoots. You, sir, are setting up the standard!
Iam glad you like it :-)
So glad you're back!!
☺❤
Iam glad you’re still here ❤️
Great work on a neat old tool!😃👍 Cheers!😃👍🛠️🔧
Totally awesome to keep the old stuff around for another few decades of punishment.. great restoration 😎 well done
Thanks!
😊❤❤
One of the most interesting tools I have seen restored.
😊❤
Before watching this I read "Tape Holder Restoration". So at the end I expected a big rol of tape being placed òn the apparatus , but it appeared to be something totally different ;-) Marvelous restoration, Mister Patina! Thank you for sharing this with us.
Haha, ive never seen it with that eyes..funny :-D
I used to have one of these when I was in school for metalworking (A good 10 years ago.) It was a really old piece, but worked flawlessly. This looked like it was brand new! Lovely job, and I could tell that you had extra fun editing this and adding the subtitling. I appreciate the extra layer of subtle humour! Keep up the good work.
Thanks my friend! Pretty interesting to hear that you know this type of holder. Any idea which brand it could be? I couldnt find anything... Thanks for your support, iam glad you like my work!
@@misterpatina Sadly I don't know the brand. It was already pretty beaten up once I had it. But I know they did exist in different sizes. I can definitely try and search though!
My grandfather, who was a mechanical engineer and did a lot of his own machining, had one of those. He got it in the 1920s and passed it on to my father who was also an engineer. I have no idea what happened to it. It was probably made in the US a hundred or so years ago.
❤👍👍
Who knew watching something I'll never need being restored would be soooo fab, but it is ... being hmm mildly ocd everything being made perfect is my happy place .... thanks for the relaxation ... I'm sure it was hard work. Best wishes 😊
❤😊
Thank you so much Steven, iam glad you like my work! :-)
The persian glue was a suprise for me 😂
Simply a joy to watch especially those zoomed in shots ...
Thanks Charlie! Iam glad you enjoyed 🙂

Haha, thanks Bill!

The extreme close-up shots are so well done (more, please). Distinguishes you from other great restoration folks on KZhead.
❤❤
Thanks, iam glad you enjoyed them! I will use my new tools in upcoming videos for sure 🙂🥳
Congratulations! I never thought that one day I would say that about any other KZheadr, but it is now official: you have unlocked My Mechanics level 😄 Oh, and the quick close up shot at 1:17 was mesmerizing.
Wow, hey man, I dont know what to say! Iam glad you like my work! :-)

Die Feile ist immernoch das beste Handwerkzeug der Welt, ohne Elektronik, immer einsatzbereit und gehört zum letzten Schliff dazu!!!!!
Maybe Santa will bring you a nice big belt grinder/sander for Christmas. Nice work.
Haha, thanks John!

As an Iranian, I was very happy to see that the product produced in my country is so trusted that you used it in your processes. I really enjoy seeing your content, please keep up the good work ❤❤❤❤👌👌

Nice to see you back again. X
Nice to see that you’re still here ❤️
You've really upped your game
☺❤
Thanks for your feedback 🙂
these tools are also used by boatbuilders for drilling holes in places difficult to access, like in between frames down near the keelson. they were also used by electricians for drilling holes through joists in loft spaces. obviously, they use jennings pattern wood - drilling bits, or similar types. here endeth the lesson ! lol
❤☺
Very inspiring! Thank you 🙏🏼👍
Love your shots and attention to detail. Thanks for a great video!
Thanks Mile, iam glad you like it!
❤❤
Great job and an amazing tool, I've never seen one like that before
You did an amazing job on this Mr P. One of your best I think.
Hey Dave, thanks for your feedback! Iam glad you enjoyed 🙂

Thanks, mate, that was a lovely video. My daughter and I loved it
Hey man, iam glad you 2 like it :-)
❤☺
ANOTHER awesome video Mr. P!
Thanks Alan!
❤👌❤
It seems to me you have a sculptor's eye/feel for the more organically shaped parts. You always seem to be able to discern what is both functional and beautiful. This restoration is a case in point.
❤❤
Not only are your restorations impeccable, but also your editing. Definitely one of the best on KZhead.
Hey, wow, thank you so much for your words. I really apreciate!
Great work! My only input would be that the wooden parts definitely need more work tho.
❤☺
Neat job restoring the tap wrench. It looks much better and works like a charm too. Great work.
Great restoration, that is a rare tool.
Yes it really is! Thanks Larry!
👍❤😊
Excellent job! Mr. Patina is a guaranteed...
Thank you so much Giuliano!
👍❤
It's great when you find an obsolete or obscure thing to restore. Love seeing how engineers solve weird problems :)
Thanks! :-)
Great video and I WISH I HAD THAT TOOL!!!!!
That was absolutely fantastic sir best one yet thanks. Take care and stay safe. Tom
Hey Tom, thank you so much! :-)
❤☺
The inflatable foot air thingy! 😂
Best tool in the shop :-D
😊❤❤
The Iranian twinn glue 😍 Nice job
Beautiful restoration job. Like from India 🇮🇳
Thanks a lot my friend!
❤😊
Your patience and dedication are admirable..//
Sweet restore and another useful tool for the shop is a bonus!
Yes 🙂
😊❤
That tool is good enough to use today. Well done for a great restoration.
Like all your work my friend…….outstanding !!
Thanks buddy!
❤😊
Oh shit, the sandpaper wrapped around the file is a brilliant idea: why didn't i ever think of that?
Give it a try, it’s super effective! But be careful, sometimes the paper slips away and you give it a nice scratch 😄
@@misterpatina I'm serious: such a simple thing that I don't even think about makes me doubt myself. This thing can make you need only one file for every job.
I don't even know what a tap holder is or does but it's certainly pretty when it's been restored!
Haha, thanks Paul!
😊❤❤
What a joy to watch ! And what a craftsmanship !
Hey Peter, iam glad you enjoyed!
❤☺
Pardon my ignorance here but….I don’t understand how the nickel plating process works but it blows my mind every time.
Very, very nice. Well done, Mr. P.
❤👍
Thanks man!
Love your new macro shots. Great video.
Thanks Eddie, iam glad you like it!
❤❤
Fantastic restoration job. Sir, you are the one.
Thanks a lot
❤😊
Loved the close up shots. And glad you showed what it did!
Iam glad you enjoyed :-)
❤❤
Enormous effort to grind and file such pieces with endless angles and surfaces. Wow, respect! The attention to detail, the craftsmanship and the dedication... There is not a handful of people that reach that level. Love it.
I really appreciate your words man! They really motivate me for further projects 🙂 Oh and I can tell, the next one will be really sweet 🙂
👍❤❤
Confidence is the first step to success 😄 Awesome restoration, beyond perfect, and I love the new shop! Beautiful shots and editing, you are an artist my friend! Thank you for sharing 🙏🏼 Nice compressor btw 🫡😄
Thanks for the glue my friend!
I very much enjoyed watching, I love to see very old & vintage tools restored.. On the clamping pieces, I think they should have just been tossed and mill up two more, they looked to me to be to far gone to work very well, unless it's just going to be a display piece and not going to be used.. Thank you for sharing.. Merry Christmas to you..
Thanks! The same for you and yours :-)
😊❤❤
