Ellis vs Villa FULL FIGHT: January 7, 2023 | PBC on Showtime PPV

The hard-hitting Roiman Villa (26-1, 24 KOs) storm back on the scorecards by dropping the previously unbeaten Rashidi Ellis (24-1, 15 KOs) twice in the 12th and final round to win a thrilling majority decision in their IBF Welterweight Title Eliminator. One judge scored the fight 113-113, but was overruled by two 114-112 tallies in favor of Villa.
Down on two cards entering the final round, a relentless Villa broke through against a tiring Ellis and landed a bruising left hook that sent Ellis down early in the 12th. Ellis worked valiantly to stay on his feet and see the final bell, but suffered a second knockdown with 30 seconds left in the fight.
“He was a tough fighter,” said Villa. “He moved a lot. He does hit hard. The first couple rounds I was a little tight but then I got loose. I was on top of him from the first round. I know that fighters such as him who are quick sooner or later will get a little tired and that’s what I took advantage of.”
After Ellis won the first five rounds on all three cards, Villa began to gain momentum through the middle frames and swept the final four, including the fight-changing 12th. While Ellis out-jabbed Villa by a staggering 164 to 13 margin, the power punch disparity was just 103 to 101 in favor of Ellis. In round nine through 12, Villa held a 58 to 24 lead in power punches landed.
The bout was contested at close quarters throughout, with Villa pressing the action while Ellis was content to sit back and fire counters. Included in those counters were a consistent effort to target Villa’s body, as he held a 53 to 10 edge in body shots.
“My corner told me to knock him down in the 12th round,” said Villa. “I couldn’t do it on the first try but I kept going. I thought he just fell on the last knockdown so I wasn’t sure if it was a knockdown. But if they want the rematch we’ll give them the rematch.”
Following the judges’ ruling, Ellis stated his belief that he had won the fight and his desire for an immediate rematch.
“I want the rematch right away,” said Ellis. “I thought I was dictating the fight. I don’t know what happened. I totally disagree with the decision. I was winning most of the rounds. Yeah, he had the knockdown but other than that I was winning most of the rounds.”

  • Ive seen this in a few of Rashidi's fights, he uses so much offense as a form of defence to keep you off him and then gasses out near the end and guts out a win. Clearly the game plan was to walk Rashidi down to put pressure whilst throwing minimal and turn it on at the later rounds when Rashidi gasses out. In my opinion, Rashidi cant keep throwing so many shots whilst also retreating for 12 rounds. Hes gotta find a way to slow the pace down or maybe stand in the pocket a couple times, land a shot that makes Villa respect him enough that the pace slows automatically, but im not sure Rashidi has respectable power like that.

    @darray.@darray.4 ай бұрын
    • Man, this is what a lot of these fighters do against guys like Benavidez, Matias, Canelo, GGG. They wear themselves and end up getting broken down by the pressure anyway. Khabib too. Its like they succumb to the narrative of the fighter subconsciously before the fight even happens. They mentally lost. Maybe I'm reaching

      @reigns1902@reigns19024 ай бұрын
    • That’s great way of putting it but it’s also he’s taking damage while he’s winning rounds and he’s not built for the later rounds under that type of pressure and damage,he was winning the first 7 rounds to me but at the same time he was taking damage in two ways,taking clean shots and also blocking,blocking will deplete a fighter as well

      @PIRUSQUAD@PIRUSQUAD4 ай бұрын
    • @@reigns1902 nope, you’re 100%. It’s the same reason Benavidez hype is growing because he fights guys that aren’t going to stay in the pocket and trade. Caleb Plant, Andrade, all “ran”. They had no chance of winning a 12 rounder with that game plan.

      @darray.@darray.4 ай бұрын
    • @@PIRUSQUAD Yh that’s why he’s gotta find a way to stand and trade in moments in order to hurt and deter or get slicker with his movement. But I think with the constant shots Rashidi throws, he becomes predictable (predictable and slower as the rounds go on). He probably needs to get more technical and start setting better traps to end the fight earlier. He’s literally in survival mode for 12 rounds (including the rounds he won)

  • I’m no expert…I thought Rashidi had it…Up until the 7th…Villa put in some pressure established his reach to set up some shots and was winning his rounds through smothering and out working Ellis…which also seemed to deceive the judges. Ellis began to slow down significantly after those low blows and head butts…I’m surprised no points were taken…Ellis did lie about one of the low blows which fired up Villa…very entertaining fight. I don’t really agree with the judges but I also was rooting for Villa and I was very hype about it. I hope to see the rematch. Both of these fighters just earned a fan.
