World Battleground, 1000 years of war in 5 minutes

For the new project, please visit jordic.com/ffracer
This animation shows all important battles that took place over the last ten centuries. The sizes of the explosions and labels are proportional to the number of casualties. The music is "Ride Of The Valkyries" by Richard Wagner. The data comes from the wikipedia article, List of Battles.
Most of the activity seems to happen in Europe, this is because the english wikipedia was used. In a future release of this video I will merge wikipedias in different languages to solve this bias.

    • It's a very Euro-centric video. You'd think there was no war in the Americas until 1521 when it's quite the opposite. In fact, one factor in the Inca defeat was the weaker military, because they had just ended a war with neighbor tribes.

    • French and Indian, and the War of 1812 (Both of which it was still mostly a British colony) are the only ones that come to mind, excluding Native American skirmishes. Most of the wars Canada has been in is because the UK went to war. Canada being a commonwealth nation had an obligation to join them if they did, right up until 1982, though I guess technically they still have to due to both being in NATO.

    @jimfar2008@jimfar200810 ай бұрын
    • Well that's if you put two people together for eternity without anyone else existing for them. They're not just gonna fight, they're gonna express all the feelings that are bond to human nature; they'll have sex, they'll express anger, they'll cry, they'll smile... basically everything. And, among that, they'll also fight for sure. Because fight and war are also bond to human nature. On the day humans become advanced enough to be able to understand their own nature and handle it, many problems will disappear as if they never existed.

You are right on that it would be like a fairy tale, but that's only because we are used to see starving children, genocide and mutilated corpses on tv, we see it so much so we aren't worried or horrified by death until it hits enough people for us to care. And because it happens so often, a lot of people have to die before we give a damn.

  • Don't so naive guys, the Europe seems so warlike from the beginning, because the european history is well known and recorded. Do you believe that the native inhabitants of Africa or both Americas were peaceful hippies? They were constantly trying to beat the shit out of each other, remember that the Cortez conquered the Aztecs with the hands of their neighbours. The struggle for power was also strong in so called Far East, the Japans, Mongols or Chinese weren't playing chess with their adversaries to resolve their disputes...

    • East asian histories are well documented too. Just that the maker of this video is probably a European who studies only European history and so knows very little of other parts of the world. That being the case, the title should be renamed to "wars of Europe", instead of "...the World".

    • IgnacM991 Actually Americas natives weren't attacking other tribes unless they did something affecting theirs. So no Europeans really took that gold power really seriously and stealing China's invention of powder to make guns only to control and dominate other lands and wash in more gold affected the world badly in terms of wars. Cortes* convinced the neighbor areas because he promised important positions and gold for them again there is the greediness of mankind affecting in the world and who did it? Europeans. Since powder didn't exist in the Americas I bet if the fat greedy invasion wouldn't happen it would be a more peaceful place.

      @brendanrisney2449@brendanrisney24499 жыл бұрын
    • Brendan Risney Yup, look at Britain in the 1640's. That's when we had our civil war. The Democratic parliament against the absolute monarchy of the king. Eventually parliament won and chopped the king's head off and got rid of the monarchy for a decade or so before realising we weren't ready to give up the whole monarchy just yet, only that git of a king, so we restored the monarchy but on our terms and they knew their place ever since as just a symbol and a figure head without having much power at all. During that time without the monarchy though, the puritan religious movement took control of the government and got all religiously extreme about things. They even banned Christmas at one point, wankers. So eventually we had enough of the religious nut cases and sent them across the Atlantic to America. The rest is history... you're welcome to them. the clip on here of Greg Proops "America is England's fault" explains it so well, lol. Worth a watch and a laugh.

We know about these battles just as well as European battles, they just aren't included in the video. Many of the explosions are misplaced. For example Dien Bien Phu is no where near Vietnam, many battles in Scotland are placed in the North Sea.... It's far from perfect or complete but still cool.

Just as the 1800s started around 3:40, she said "Here comes Napoleon!" and then the continent of Europe disappeared under explosions. If anything, I think this video conveys the idea of the waste of life that is associated with war better than any book or documentary. You see large explosions, signifying tens of thousands of deaths and you ask "what was THAT for???" A pretty sobering experience.

  • Why Europe has the most. 1: Europe had an obsession with writing everything down, they have the most written history. 2: Europe had organized armies and large-scale battles, while many other regions were still having tribal skirmishes. 3: Europe was the most technologically advanced region for over 1000 years (And thus a more efficient method of killing others). 4: Europe was very compact and densely populated, so fighting over land and/or resources was more likely to occur. 5: From the ages of the Celts, Vikings, Germanic Tribes, etc. up until the end of WW2 European culture has been very battle-centric. I am aware the Mediterranean and Middle East beat Europe to a lot of those, but Europe took them to a whole new level.

    • Australia became its own country in 1st January 1901, in WWI Australia and New Zealand teamed up to help UK, by fighting in Gallipoli, lots of them died from drowning in the sea. In WWII we did help our allies, but we were bombed by Japan on 19 February 1942 at 10am which was called the bombing of Darwin, but many of the civilians living there moved down south because of the war going on in Asia, but a few did stay, we lost more than 200 civilians that day, but we fought back and stopped Japan from taking that part of Australia, which really is hot and dry. Australia also helped in Afghanistan, and a lot of wars, but since we are apart of the commonwealth if we get attacked, the UK and other countries of the commonwealth will help. (I live in Australia so I know my history)

      @patwana4496@patwana44968 жыл бұрын
    • pat wana Iraq invaded Kuwait, America saved Kuwait. Saddam committed genocide, America ended his reign. Al Qaeda destroys World Trade Center, America is launched into a depression and the only way to create jobs and revive the economy is taking revenge. To prevent further wars and make sure America isn't the country having to keep the Muslims in check, foreign aid is given to powers loyal to the West (Israel, Lebanon, etc.) America is not responsible for what is going down in the Middle East, Muslims are. Their outdated culture has laid without major Western influence until recently which has sparked these conflicts. Their ways are brutal by today's standards and therefore, countries like America are trying to make them what we consider normal. Blaming America for problems that they didn't cause and are trying to fix is ignorant. Let's see the real outcome: America becomes richer and ends its depression *THAT MUSLIMS CAUSED*, and the Middle East becomes a civilized landscape not a bloodbath of religion.

      @kurf4122@kurf41228 жыл бұрын

    • Texican Gentry America has been its own country for 239 years and out of those years its been at war for 222. Your country is based on the slaughter of 100 million native Americans and the enslavement of 11 million Africans and yet you still point the finger at other nations. I could list all the nations your military has intervened in but it would probably crash your computer. You guys are the ones that put these leaders in place in the middle east and once you take them down it sparks the uprising of militant groups such as Isis. America is the biggest threat to world peace and if you do some actual studying on Islam you will find it is a peaceful religion so stop listening to fox news which fills your head with propaganda. Your government hides a lot from the people so i encourage you to do some reading into the whole America-Islam thing.
