The Real Reason WHY the C5 Super Galaxy GIANT Problem Terrifies Everyone!

The C-5 Super Galaxy strategic transport aircraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is the largest aircraft and only strategic airlifter in the U.S Air Force's vast artillery. For decades, this gargantuan aircraft provided airlift for U.S Forces as well as critical support for its allies.
However, the C-5's massive size means any concerns with the aircraft would most likely be of a massive scale.
Despite undergoing a relatively recent modernisation programme, the C5 still has a giant problem..

  • The govt. missed its chance to order 747-8Fs before they ceased production last year. Would of made a great addition or replacement for the C-5. Transports, tankers, hell even bomber and spooky variants were possible on a proven existing platform. Pound for pound the 747-8 is currently the most economical plane flying when fully loaded at 585000 lb gvwr. take of rating. It was actually tested at 1,200,000 llbs. Opportunity missed. Good vid!

  • I have a picture taken at Altus AFB Oklahoma of the very first C5A that Lockheed delivered to the USAF doing tower flybys while the crew tried to get the nose wheels down. They eventually managed to hand crank them down and the plane landed safely, but I have to wonder if this incident is in any way connected to the more recent problems with the C5M.

  • I used to live in Tacoma when my dad was stationed at Ft. Lewis and when the C5's would come in to land at McCord AFB they would use reverse thrust to make super fast landings so just about every day from 10am until about 6pm every 15 minutes landing jets would make it sound like being front row at cape Kenedy and that was from 92-96 I could just imagine the super galaxy

  • This is why you don't let the military dictate what they want. Smaller planes more of them.

    • hence the C17, the C5 carries more in one go reducing crews and airframes required for a given task but both aircraft complement each others capabilities.

  • WOW. it's a lowrider. Would be easier to make a ramp. High maintenance item.

    • It has a ramp. If it didn’t “kneel” it would require a much longer ramp that it wouldn’t be able to carry.

    • with a 10+ year additional life span and STILL flying twice as many as Russia does today, I would say it is a very fine example of Western cargo technology

    • They dont have such a good record either, and it seems the problem on the C5 is known so it is just a case of deciding if it is worth fixing
