The fact that you're still releasing videos with improvements to your grinder speaks to your dedication to making this the best grinder available. I would caution anyone looking for a motor to check the duty cycle; this one is listed as "air compressor duty", which in my experience means NOT continuous. Great video and grinder, I'm in the middle of making one for the metal shop and one for the wood shop.

@@HouseMadeUS comp motors have a high power start circuit to start under load.belt sanders have low start loads so no problems
@@HouseMadeUS Also air compressors are geared by pulley size to pull the max (name plate amperage)at full pressure. That is a hella load. I doubt a belt grinder will ever get that hard loaded. They also use 1.25 s.f. motors so no problems. Recip Air compressors themselves, are not "rated" to run continuous because it shows its undersized for the most part. (You should buy slightly larger capacity than your using) Also because it causes life expectancy to drop drastically. Like driving a car 24/7 365 vs normal.

having 7 VFDs In my shops, I understand and appreciate 3 phase. But for those complaining that they don't have 220VAC, you certainly CAN run one a VFD on 120VAC. Just need a different VFD. 2 hp is easily enough run on a 120VAC circuit. (marginally on a 15 amp breaker, but still will work, nicer on a 20amp.)

I built a wooden frame 2x72 with a treadmill motor a few years ago - I never realized how useful it would be for so many things. The old (underpowered) DC motor recently gave up the ghost so I’m pretty keen to get it going again with an upgraded drive train. Very useful information - thanks. BTW of the many things I’ve learned in my 60 years - sadly, welding isn’t one of them. Thus the wooden framed grinder. I DO know how to work the wood though so it’s robust and works great - even if it’s pretty ugly. To anyone wondering if they really need one - you do. Mine gets used as much as my table saw, drill press or chop saw - my top 4 machines.

One side note about DC motors. In the old days when people first started using SCR drives the motor manufacturers started an info campaign regarding the ripple content on the SCR drive. They also launched new motors that were rated for SCR DUTY.. The reason was dual -- the ripple in the current increases eddycurrent and hysteresis losses in the laminations as well as the arcing at the brushes. The idea about a need for an SCR duty rated motor has since the been forgotten, but is still valid. As an alternative, you can add an adequately dimensioned choke, which probably is as expensive or even more than the motor.. As an additional concern is the TEFC construction. The integral fan does not do really anything, when the motor operates at low speeds! That adds to the ripple generated heat and and also speeds up the brush wear. Changing to a separate, external fan can solve that issue, but again add cost. The fan probably is cheap, but you also need to build the air ducting.

Wow thanks so much. I've been wanting a 2 by 72. Instead of my 2 by 42 grinder. Ya the prices for 3 phase motors and controls are quite expensive. Around $650.00 to $800 plus shipping. I understand why it costs are so high, around $1800 to $2500 for a belt grinders. Most people have a hard time paying so much for 2 by 72 that there only using once in a while. Thanks so much for sharing.

I would look on used markets for 3ph motors their very cheap because companies have to get replace them every so often and they usually work fine and you can normally get them from 50 to 100$ and 2hp to 5hp

I've been using a modified 2HP *single phase* 240V that I got for free and a cheap $100 eBay Chinese VFD for a couple of years now.. The way I got it to work was to remove the capacitor and series the start and run windings, and bypass and remove the centrifugal switch. The windings are connected to the VFD as a delta config but with one missing winding (wasn't sure it would work, but free motor, nothing to lose; it's been working fantastically for more than two years now). The only signs that it's not a true three-phase motor is that at low RPM it isn't as smooth, but it has plenty of torque all across the range and the motor and the VFD both stay cool over hours long grinding sessions.. If it dies, I'll definitely swap for a true 3PH motor, but until then, I'm very happy with my fortuitous discovery that you can series the windings in a single phase motor and get it to run with a 3PH VFD..

I think DC motors are a viable option, IF they are industrial aka not a treadmill motor, but the motor and controls will run as much or more than the AC version. I have fried my controller for a treadmill motor, building them cheaply is great but it's kind of a dirty way to do it. There is a reason the control board in the original treadmill looks like an over sized PC lol. KB makes a full line of DC controllers but they are on par price wise with their AC counterparts. I do like that VFD option you showed, does that one have the long tether for the removable face? Seems like a great way to go by simply mounting the controller face by the grinder and having the VFD enclosed and tucked away.

Changing belt speeds is really important when grinding carbon steels. Mostly because of temperatures. You don’t want to lose your temper. 🙂

No not necessarily. I’d say it’s more about your heat treatment phase and where you are in the process of your project. If you’re doing final grinding you want to keep that blade as cool as you can, sharpening your want slow speeds in reverse.

Have you ever considered making a version of the grinder that could be powered by a shopsmith? The powerpro headstock isn’t cheap but it would be a great power source for your grinder, it’s multi purpose, and for those who need to be budget minded used units are plentiful.

Mike is the only guy I know that successfully has grinders running off DC. I've had a few other guys claim they have DC motors, but then you find out they don't make many knives or they just built the grinder. I always wonder about installing circuit breakers in a house, insurance wise, if you aren't certified... That VFD, I know i sound like a broken record & because of warranties, I was sent 3 for free, but out of 5 only 1 survived(mainly cause I invested in NEMA4). Hope all is well, take it easy.
Yes that has been my experience also. If you make sure to install your outlets to code insurance wouldn’t know the difference if it was installed by you or a contractor. I always do everything above code now just to make sure. Hope you’re doing great Dave!!

@@jakie996 Interesting, are you sure about that, because I've known him for quite a while & all his grinders have 3 phase now. Even when he 1st got his KMG over 4 years ago it was on a 1 phase belt driven Ac motor. His homemade grinder was a treadmill motor, but that was replaced pretty quick.

What, in your opinion is the optimum SFPM on the belt for GENERAL use? I know it's nice to have the ability to up or lower the speed.
It's really tough to generalize that -- I'd say 3600 but I like to have the option to go at full blast [7000sfpm] on it. I'm always adjusting the speed depending on what I'm doing, the belt grit, and the material I'm grinding on.

@@HouseMadeUS Hey! Good Lord....I'm so soŕry about not getting back to you!! So I purchased a 5000 watt 110-220 step up transformer for my air compressor motor and it works great! Finding the proper pressure valve was more of a challenge. 15A 175 PSI was pretty hard to find. But I found it and my air compressor works great now.

1. Check out the last video I made on wiring up a VFD, that may help but it is hardware-specific to what I'm using there. kzhead.info/sun/YNCIkc-KjoqOoqc/bejne.html If you go with the cheaper VFD you will need a 220 outlet. There is no option for 110 [that I know of] other than the KBAC-27D. 2. I've not done it -- but I don't think you need a 2hp motor to achieve that, i would guess that 1hp will suffice. Brian, does the longer motor affect the cantilever, making it want to flop to a horizontal position more violently than the balanced iron horse motor, or is there little difference?
No balance difference at all. I joke about this all the time but literally that was a surprise when I first built this. The balance is so smooth and it wants to live in the vertical position. I rarely use the locking mechanism on the first hinge.

Hey Brian, this comment is somewhat unrelated to the video, but I'm curious as to what kind of belt you find best for FAST material removal? I haven't tried low-grit ceramic yet, kinda headed in that direction. Also, do you find certain sfpm/rpm ranges work better for certain types of belts?
36 grit ceramics are amazing and will chew through steel. I like the VSM line.
Are these Chinese vfds able to run motors over 65hz ? I purchased a 4 pole motor which is rated at about 1350rpm so the torque was better at low speeds I believe your original speed controller is able to over speed motors but not sure if the Chinese ones have that option ??
Some motor specs are highly "optimistic", but the one shown at 10:12, is surprisingly honest, stating that it consumes 6A at 230V. Each hp at 230V equates to about 3.25A, so this motor is in fact pretty close to 2hp. I've seen "6.5hp" air compressors that draw 10A at 230V. This is complete BS because 10A only gets you about 3hp. BTW, the same marketing BS happens with shop vacs.
Yeah I would agree that in this specific application (high continuous speed, excessive dust) your typical brushed PMDC motor is probably not the best choice. They’re great in drill presses, and I’m going to try a bandsaw next (stored in a enclosure).

There is one VFD series out there made by KB electronics that will upscale single phase 110 to 3 phase 220. It’s the KBAC-27D. The downside of utilizing this VFD is that you will lose 1/2 hp.
With both these motors out of stock is there another motor you know of that will work well and attach to your kit?

Long time follower first time subscriber. I'm very impressed with your skills and your attention to details. I'm inspired to build your version of 2x72" belt grinder. I already have a 2HP, PH3 Electric motor but the RPM is only 1745. Do you think it'll work or should I get a more RPM motor?
My preference is to have a 3450RPM motor with speed control. 1700 won't give you the speed you will want for hogging material
What voltage are the motors you're running? Most of the treadmill motors I've seen have been anywhere from 48 to 90 volts. Doesn't the power supply you built provide 110 volts?
These are not DC motors. These are 220 3 phase motors. The VFD handles the conversion from either 110 single phase or 220 single phase to 3 phase 220.
A bit confused. AC motors can also be magnetic. If you get a TEFC DC motor would it not work?
Totally enclosed DC would work. Yes. Good point.
No brushes in a 3ph motor. You can always use the Iron Horse 2hp 1,725 RPM motor and set the VFD for 120HZ. The 1,725 RPM motors are a lot more common so stock should not be a problem.

Is there any advantage to the $357 VFD or should I buy the cheapest available VFD for $95? Wondering if the 220 Volt single phase AC motor will work OK on our Aussie 240 Volt Single Phase AC 50 Hertz supply? Do I need 10 amp or 15 amp outlet to run it? I’m also guessing that if the motor will run OK, that the VFD will likewise also work here. I do have 3 phase supply available 440volts 63 Amp. Is there any reason not to just buy a 3 phase motor & would a VFD work on 440V 3 phase supply? I looked online locally once and VFD’s for our 440V 3 phase supply started at over $1k 😳😳🙄
I would put it on a 15amp circuit, 220 single phase and let the VFD do the 3 phase conversion. This would be exactly how I have it in my shop and it works perfectly.

Is there any option where you just ship everything needed in one box? The 220V 15 amp motor & VFD, the wheels & bearings, the Tube & Angle Iron etc. I have a welder, & angle grinder. No lathe as yet so won’t be turning my own wheels yet for eg. Same with the round stock - supply an already turned piece since I have no lathe to turn my own? I’d sooner pay one person for everything than order parts from all over the internet from many different suppliers. With Covid supply chain problems all over the world the compound effect of trying to source parts from every man & his dog just means you could be 6 months plus waiting on just one part to be able to complete your project. Heck I ordered a rubber drive belt off Evilbay for an electric mower & that was 7 months ago, turned out it was coming from Spain and never arrived. One transaction with one supplier & everything comes in the one box works when your supplying outside the USA. Just a suggestion.

You still think it’s worth going for 220v if your shop is 75 ish feet from the circuit breaker on the house? About 40 of it is open ground to cover. My old man ran 110v to it under the dirt but idk if it’s in a conduit or what so I’d probably have to dig a whole new trench. I have concerns with what I means for power train options to nerf myself at 1.5hp and still have the ability to switch to 220 at a later time.
I do like having 220. Especially for my welders and such. For the grinder it's optional.
all tho i agree with you in many things ...the only thing I am iffy is that I have had treadmill motor setup and has worked for years still running like a champ, but most of all the motors come free! you can simply go to offerup and facebook or 5miles and letgo someones always throwing away a treadmill and they always work...its always something else besides the motor that fails its usually the board that controlls the functions to start it and all that but I have only ran into one treadmill that the motor was dead but my collection of free motors all work. So to me you cant beat free ever...if it fails in a few years well hmm get another free one if you already collected some even better simply replace it and try to make that part that holds the motor adjustable.

@@HouseMadeUS Man only when I'm reallly leaning into it. I guess I'm a "soft" grinder because it hasn't been an issue for me yet. I have it running on a KB Electronics VFD. It's a 1H Leeson. I imagine a 2HP with reverse would be pretty legit!

The label of the Motor is realy nice. The motor is not full enclosed. Particel smaller then 1mm went in... be carefull.. But: ISO 9001 ? LOL, nice to know :=)

You only have 3 phase or do you have both single and 3?
Most VFD's are meant to be connected to 3-ph supplies. Some of the smaller ones rated for up to a few hp are built to be able to work with single-ph inputs.
We are only talking about 2hp here. I run single phase to 3 phase all the time and it works great. 3 phase is not needed for this application.
@@HouseMadeUS you are correct that a VFD with a 3-ph input is not necessary at these low power levels. Since the person asking does have have 3-ph available in his shop, he has more options available. Some VFD product lines are only available with 3-ph inputs. Many of the ones where there are versions with 1-ph and a separate version with 3-ph inputs, the 1-ph version is less common and more expensive.

so i have a error code on my vfd 19103 no clue nothing in the manual
Brian, I made a mistake. I bought this motor because it became available and the Iron Horse is still out of stock. I had already cut 9 inch risers. Is there any reason I couldn't put a 1 inch square tubing frame under the base plate to give me another inch of clearance? Looks like the motor clears the base plate easily in this video.

For the longevity of any motor being run on a VFD, the motor needs to be Class F insulation in order to deal with the spikes. It gets more and more pedantic when it comes to inverter ready motors, insulated bearings, etc. But Class B insulation motors (especially cheap ones) aren't going to last long on a VFD, unless used infrequently.
Those ratings assume the motor is running 24/7/365. Intermittent use in a belt grinder, even if used by a professional knife maker, should be acceptable. This advice comes from a former coworker who was the motor R&D at a large multinational that manufactures 3-phase motors from a few hp to over 2000 hp.
One could just make a spacer under the base plate. Looks like the motor is to the rear of it. I built my own design but I got a 3hp industrial beast of a motor for $50 Canadian. VFD for $110 US. Balance, what's that ?? LOL. I use a lock pin to keep it vertical because it is heavy. There is also a lock bolt.
Awesome man, yeah an used motor would make this build even less expensive. I am really trying to keep folks from making the same mistakes I made with DC motors. They work for certain things but this application they really don't make much sense. Buy once, cry once!

Its running well but when you put pressure against the belt it stops an error 006
220? 110? Which VFD? Also check your wiring at the motor. You may have a T Wire swapped.

I have two different models, but throwing the error means it’s probably the cheaper one. Check hour wiring at the motor. Might be a T wire switched up

This VFD .... KBDF-27D (IP20 housing) is actually better capable, same brand and over 100 bucks cheaper than the KBAC-27D (IP65 housing). It just doesnt have the "enclosed" housing. If you use the Asian brand... its the same rated housing (IP20) but is even cheaper.
For use with a metal grinder, you NEED the IP65 rated one since it is dustproof and splashproof. The IP20 one will accumulate the dust inside. Since the metal dust is conductive, it will eventually short out the IP20 VFD. I know people who have gotten away with using IP20 VFD's for a while ... until they blew up. It is possible to put the IP20 VFD in a sealed box to protect it from the dust. The box has to be large enough to have enough surface area to dissipate the heat generated by the VFD or it will go into thermal overload and shut down (or blow up). It is likely that one would spend most of $100 to do this.

I know this is and older video but I just purchased the iron horse motor was planning on getting the cheaper vfd. There are two versions when you go to order. The general and vector vfd. Should I go with the vector or the general?

I wonder if you could make yourself some money by contacting the manufacturer of the product you’ve decided to recommend on your channel? If you can prove you e caused sell outs before, maybe you can come to an arrangement where you give them a week or 2 to stock up, for a kick back on the units direct from the manufacture or they reserve a few units to sell through you for your channel with a promo code?
Yeah for sure. I was thinking about reaching out to a motor company and just have them send me 25 or so for stock. The motor I recommended had 11 in stock when I recommended it, sold out in 20 minutes. WOW.
House / Work ya that’s pretty cool, I see this a lot with youtubers that go above and beyond to try and find the 1-2 possible sources of high end Chinese products, just to have them either sell out right away due to low stock, or have their amazon sellers just hike the price so high it’s no longer worth it. Always figured the manufacture themselves must be capable of (and likely happy to) increase stock if they only had a week or 2 heads up. Like your example of 11 selling out in 20 minutes, it would be great if you sold your 20 or so, but I imagine that meant that a few 100 people must have wanted them. So getting a kick back on 100+ without having to handle orders yourself could have been pretty profitable and just easy? That's correct. No need for 3 phase with this setup. The VFD is single phase input to 3 phase output.

Totally agree. I run them on two of my grinders and they are made in Florida. I just get so many emails about people trying to reduce the cost of any grinder build. This is a good happy medium.

I'm wondering why bother with a VFD at all. What not pick the speed most often used and buy a single-phase motor and wheel to meet that goal? Would save a lot of money and simplify the build, especially for the cost-conscious, which we all are since we're here...
You cripple this machine by making it a single speed. For another $100 you can work with a wide array of materials. It just makes sense.

A DC motor is a bad idea long term. Unless your gonna pay for a brushless the brushes will wear out fast due to the high rpms. Though speed control is easier on dc motor its still not as reliable long term

So this even sounds dumb but, could we instead use a gear ratio with a well secured angle grinder that should end up generating 3600 RPm along with the horsepower instead of the motor? Corded of course.
Oh man, I doubt that could give you enough torque to work properly.
I only just ran some numbers, the angle grinder would need somewhere between 75kg 165lbs and 125kg 275.5lbs of torque to actually gear ratio into 2 horsepower
It definitely isn’t enough to get the right speed and torque, the average torque is on average 34 kg or 74. That said it would reach the torque with a slightly lower rpm.
