You are entirely too unique to be categorized in such a way. You’re a renaissance man in a much younger package. From your intelligence and what I consider ageless wisdom, to your choice of facial hair, you’re a cut above the rest. • Every time I hear someone refer to a 'British leader' or' British hero' its almost always an English person, who is usually hated by the majority of the rest of the country. As a Scottish person I know he did a good job running the country during the war and can of course acknowledge this but I can also recognise that he was a racist, sexist, homophobic bigot who supported slavery and the apartheid. From our modern perspective its easy to see how this has been overlooked and even covered up by historians to perpetuate the myth that he was an amazing heroic leader.

Bruh this man destroyed India totally. people were dying in bengal because he was taking all their food as reserves for the war. officials were saying to him people are dying do something but all he did is saying that "why Gandhi hasn't died yet"? He has as much blood on his hand as some of the worst dictators. This man is responsible for the death of 35 million Indians. This guy might be a great leader for British people but for us this guy is no less than hitler but you know british people not going to admit it anyway. He forcefully recruited Indians in british army for ww2 deaths and 1,500,000-2,500,000 indian lost there lives in ww2. “I hate Indians, they are beastly people with beastly religion"-Winston Churchill Quotes

  • Since Im neither French nor British and since this is the first time I hear about this story, I will give my [hopefully] objective opinion. I cant justify Churchill's actions against the French navy. His decision was difficult yes, but ultimately based in his distrust of the French. Besides, if the French didn't want to surrender to the mightiest navy in the world against the most powerful ship at the time as you claim, then it makes sense that they wouldn't have allowed the Nazi's to take over their fleet without a fight, since they would be even less afraid or intimidated by the Nazi's. The French knowing that their Navy stood no chance against the British Navi, didn't surrender out of principle. That should have been enough for Churchill to realize that the French would do what they promised and destroy their ships. The real heroes are the French, who despite being surrounded and served an ultimatum by their supposed 'allies', didn't open fire or try to escalate the situation in any way. Besides, if Churchill knew that Hitler would undoubtedly try to capture the French Navi, why didn't he work with the French together to set a trap for the Germans and possibly end the war altogether or at least end the possibility of their advance outside of Europe? Oh right, he didn't trust them. What a hero. Sorry I know you're British, and I dont mean to insult, but I think its way more objective to say that he was wrong, or rather, didn't exhaust all his possibilities.

For example he was very racist, and referred to africans as savages and he said that he was proud to have killed at least 3 of them. He would often use the air force to suppress rebels by bombing civilian villages and even suggested using poison gas against tribes in Iraq, much like Saddam Hussein did some decades later. It is also believed that Churchill was directly responsible for the great famine of Bengal in 1943, not only refusing to send them food from Britains own food storage, but also refusing to let other nations, such as the US and Canada, help them. The famine killed over 4 million people, most of them could've been saved if Churchill hadnt refused to help them

He instead decided to send all this food to his troops stationed in France and Dunkirk when it could have easily saved the lives of millions of starving people.

  • As a Russian I see a bit of a double standard here. What I mean is that if you read about Churchill in Russian history books, monographies etc you'll see him as a very gray figure and and quite thee good-doer you portray him in this video. And I am convinced it's a question of perspective. Churchill did good for the British people, which is natural, and good for the British was not always good for the others. That's why I was surprised to hear you credit Putin's popularity to plainly mentality and good PR. The reason Putin is popular is quite similar to the reason Churchill is popular: the man is doing good for his own country. I am not a huge Putin supporter, but you can't deny him success in lifting Russia out of poverty and "new dark ages", you know. So in my opinion it's a bit strange to first praise Churchill who did a lot of extremely questionable things including even the one you describe here and at the same time say that Putin is only popular because Russians value power (that's a very strange statement, by the way, but that's not the point). If you try to look at this issue form the perspective of the country's people, you can quite easily understand why people support Putin, Kim Jeongeun or even why Germans supported Hitler at the time.

Also, you skip over the fact that Hitler believed he was acting for "good" - not "evil". In fact, most leaders do. Even the communist leaders in the USSR, China, Cambodia etc. who killed millions of people of their own population, thought they were acting for "good". You also say that Churchill had no desire to invade and enslave other nations, but Churchill was earlier in his life actually quite active in the fights against the zulus and the boers in South Africa under British rule.

But what if d-day failed as they couldn't get enough men on the shores of Europe? Why is the lives of the Bengali always held in such high value compared to the lives his choices saved? Ok those ships delivered food now you don't have enough ships to supply the western front your Solders are falling by the hundreds thanks to limited munitions lack of tanks and basic medical supply's. your offensive failed and the 1m soldiers are stuck in Europe. Germany was able to force the allies off of the mainland and in doing delayed the allies by at least another year to regain the supply's and train new Men. you may even need to sue for peace thanks to public backlash. You also have to account for the soviets, they were not Britain's true ally and there was a race to Berlin look at what happened after WW2 imagine if they controlled more of Germany, Italy and France. Now if you had a choice between your country's and by extension the worlds future or the future on the other side of the world. i can understand his decision. im not gonna go over the point of the Japanese front as that has been said already. But it is what makes him a great man, he made the right choice, looked at the big picture. It is a horrible choice i pity anyone who has to make anything close to that choice.

How can he be great by the same token of 'good cause' or 'empathy for his people'? In the same official documentations, he ignored the dying bengalis because of his callous action of stockpiling grains for reserves and not providing relief for the workers who actually produced it, was his vile reply, "Why is Gandhi still alive?" Churchill was vile and I know the world probably needed him at that time. But the world, especially the English student in Britain, need to be taught of this too. In the film "The Darkest Hour" one scene stuck with me for ages and that was when he said " I will take full responsibility" and his opposition said "really?" Winston replied with "REALLY. YES SIR. IT THE REASON THAT I SIT IN THIS CHAIR!" which to me just shows that he knew what he was doing and that he was willing to live with the possible guilt of failure for the rest of his life if needs must just like he did with the Gallipoli situation and outcome. • I find the military history in this video was flawed: If the french warships were captured by the Third Reich, does not mean the Royal Navy would stand without a fight, and the loses would be too great for the Kriegsmarine to sustain, not to mention that the Third Reich managed their Resources for increasing industry output poorly. Just like how on paper the Italian navy had more ships (not supperior though) during 1940 than the British, but not the industry to make up for any of the losses. I am not saying that the Royal Navy wouldn't be very badly off, but it's unlikely that the Kriegsmarine wouldn't take a Heavy amount of losses. And even if the British would have the UK invaded, in Operation Sea Lion, it's very hard to claim that the Wehrmacht would do this without flaw, D-Day took several years to prepare for and even then a lot of problems were faced on the big day, so it is unlikely that the Wehrmacht would be different in that aspect. Not to mention the British home guard, standing quite strong. My next Point is just my opinion with out any real evidance (to my knowledge), but eitherway. I find it unlikely that the entire World would crumble if Britain had lost to the Wehrmacht. And if the Wehrmacht further would have attacked the USSR in better timing, it is still not likely that the Wehrmacht would have won a stagering victory, they were ready for a campagin of a few weeks, not a years long war, and it was still the Red army who defeated the Wehrmacht, not the Russian Winter. Anyways, great video, but what I Think one should be careful of; Making big what ifs is a dangerous zone to travel to, since we can't possibly ever know what would have happened, we can support our claims through facts, but we can never truly know. I know I am responisble of this myself, but to counter what I Think is unprobably I can only do the same. • Don't forget that Churchill lead the Gallipoli disaster which caused him to be fired from his job as head of the Admiralty. I don't think you can say that Hitler wasn't a great leader just because he had questionable morals. The defeat of Germany was a close thing. And don't forget that part of the reason for Germany's aggression was due to the way they were humiliated after WW1 by the allies. Look at the great Generals of ancient times. They are regarded as great leaders yet they often committed terrible atrocities.

    • Old plugin very good point. The man who defeated him, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, went onto achieve things that no one has rivalled yet if you ask me. Regardless of your opinion on him, as far as leaders go I'd call him great. Surprised he wasnt in the video.

    • Old plugin Germany's defeat may not have happened at all were it not for Hitler's hubris and refusal to follow the advice of his experienced military leaders, like Rommel. His insistence on Barbarossa led to what most historians agree is the turning point against Germany at Stalingrad. On the home front, the nazi bureaucracy was hopelessly inefficient and whether this was by accident or design - depending on what interpretation you follow - it is hardly a hallmark of good leadership.

    • The reasons for defeat weren't solely his fault first of the ANZAC's landed in the wrong place and although they fought bravely the terrain was massively against them, also the Turks we're fighung on their home soil, for their country. The plan was a really good idea though.

  • Churchill was not a great leader. He did not care about all his people. In fact he was wildly racist, especially towards the Indians. He was responsible for the deaths of millions of Indians during the Bengal famine.

    • Rory Ayland At the time racism was the norm. You cannot simply impose current political views on the past and the call them evil. It's like saying all medieval lords were evil because the majority of the population lived in poverty. To flip it around, surely the countless Indian rulers before the British raj were evil as well, they often fought wars resulting in thousands of deaths. What makes them any better? Is it because they weren't white?

      @finlaybullough499@finlaybullough4996 жыл бұрын
    • You say he was responsible for a famine? No those supplies were needed for the British Soldiers, which included over a million Indians who were fighting for their lives. It was a matter of priority and I am sorry to say but in WW2 and a war as desperate as that, Soldiers are far more important than civilians.

  • As a German I think that you overstated Hitler's rhetorical abilities. Of course he gave good speeches and understood how to manipulate the people but the way you described him it almost seemed as if he could control your mind through his super human speeches. I don't know how much you know about the German history and especially about the Weimarer Republik but I can assure you that not only Hitler's rhetorical power but more than that the general bad attitude of the public towards democracy lead to his rise. I find it really critical to glorify Hitler as a mad mastermind that tragically used his genius skills to do evil instead of bettering the world as you kind of did.

    @MeinsDeins11@MeinsDeins116 жыл бұрын
    • if you look at some primary sources from the time he was almost hypnotic. People who listened to him were in awe, even if they disagreed. While there were many many factors to the rise of Nazi party, Hitler's public speaking was undoubtedly a large part of the success, especially in the early years.

      @sam808tt2@sam808tt26 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, of course you could easily fall for Hitler's ideas back than while listening to his speeches. But that wouldn't be possible if not a lot of people were frustrated and disappointed by democracy or still were faithful to the German Emperor. They wanted a strong leader to substitute the fallen Emperor. That and a lot of other factors (eg the Treaty of Versailles) made his rise possible. That's why I think it is to simple to just say Hitler was almost like a magician controlling the masses. Because that kind of takes the responsibility from the people who systematically killed millions of people under his leadership.
