BMW v Mercedes v Audi v Volvo: BEST premium SUV review
If you’re in the market for a high-end plug-in hybrid SUV, which should you go for - a Mercedes GLC, BMW X3, Audi Q5 or Volvo XC60? Well, Mat’s got his hands on each one, and he’s about to put them all head-to-head to find out which is the #1 plug-in hybrid SUV you can get your hands on!
So let’s see how they all compare. Starting with the Volvo, it’s one of the oldest cars here - but it can still keep up with these more modern plug-in hybrids! Since 2017 it’s only had a couple of minor updates made to the design and interior, but it still has a classy design, with chrome trim on the outside helping it to stand out. The interior is pretty minimalist, although controlling most features through the touchscreen infotainment system can be a bit annoying. It also has new digital dials, but they’re a bit bland.
The XC60 is powered by a 2-litre turbo petrol engine and an electric motor, the T8 is the most powerful car in this line-up, being able to produce 455hp. An entry-level XC60 will set you back £47,650.
Next up we have the Audi Q5. It may come with exceedingly obvious fake exhaust pipes, but it’s still one of the best-looking cars here. Just like the Volvo it comes with chrome trim on the outside, and all-in-all it looks pretty smart. The interior is well built as well, with soft-touch materials found throughout the cabin. Thankfully it comes with physical buttons for the climate control, and the digital dials are probably the best in this entire line-up.
The Audi Q5 is equipped with a 2-litre turbo petrol engine & an electric motor, and this 50 TFSI e edition can produce 299hp. The Audi Q5 range is the most affordable, too, with it coming in at a price of £46,785.
Next up it’s the BMW. Up front, it comes with a pretty huge grille (which will come as no surprise to our BMW fanboys & girls), but we think it makes it’s all a bit much. After all, it’s only a family-friendly SUV, so it could perhaps do with being toned down a bit. Thankfully the quality of the cabin more than makes up for this, with high-quality materials found throughout, and a pretty high-tech infotainment screen which can be controlled with a dial on the centre console.
The X3 is powered by a 2-litre turbo petrol and an electric motor, but it’s the least powerful hybrid here, with the xDrive 30e only able to produce 292hp. The BMW X3 range kicks off at £47,295.
Then finally we have the newest car in this line-up, the Mercedes GLC. Just like the Audi it has super prominent fake exhausts, but we still think it’s one of the best-looking cars here. It has a great side profile, and the elements of chrome trim and the running boards along the side enhance the look. It’s a positive story on the inside, too, with a large infotainment screen in the centre of the dash and a large digital dial display. You’ll find soft-touch materials throughout the cabin as well.
It’s powered by a (you guessed it…) 2-litre turbo petrol with an electric motor, and these combine to produce 320hp. It’ll come as no surprise that the GLC is also the most expensive car here, being the newest, with the range starting from £52,880.
But which do you think is the best - will the all-new GLC come out on top? Or does the classic XC60 stand a chance? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

Cheap ones at that probably snap off first B-road you're on. Abysmal reliability on all of these heaps even the Volvo is unreliable now.

The collision detection at least in my XC40 Recharge only triggers when you're going head on against an obstacle in front of you and I believe it takes into account your steering angle, that's why it didn't trigger. It knew at that angle you wouldn't collide with the truck otherwise it'll trigger at every corner.
XC40 and Mercedes Q5 for me are the most superior SUVs.
None of these are the best. The Tesla Model Y is actually the best. Too bad y’all didn’t include it since you are clearly paid buy these brands to include their cars. I’ve had the BMW X3 M40D for the last 3 years, should have changed it this year but I’ve kept it. 0 to 60 in 4.8 s, 42mpg on a long run, decent luggage space and I still like it as much as the day i got it👌

Nice. Keep it Bayerisch.
damn that m40d drives like a dream, can’t really get bored with it, have fun using it !
Wow! That is what i want to buy next ;)
I have the iX3 M Sport Pro which isn't quite as fast as the M40D, but more responsive due to electric power, and super smooth and comfortable like an S Class. The best thing is that it comes fully loaded - Head up display, adaptive suspension, 20" wheels, pano sunroof etc - all as standard. Stupendous car
Saying this as a PHEV owner, the Mercedes is seriously impressive purely because of its EV range. 130km of electric range (probably 110km-ish in the real world) is amazing for a PHEV.
Mandatory in Germany now. To be considered a real PHEV, the cars need to have at least a 20+kw battery and more than 100km electric only range. So expect new models from Audi and BMW with the same stats
What year and model mercedes?
I would go for the xc60 simply because of its sleek and unique design both interior and exterior and premium built quality with no hard plastics .Also the drive and performance seems superbly aided by the plush and luxurious cabins .
One of your best videos because of the balance, the logical and timely transitions and all the valuable information! Even if it is 27min which is not exactly KZhead trend, is justified covering 4 great competitor cars addressing a big potential market segment!
Love you, Mat Watson, been watching since 3million subs from Ghana.
We have a 2021 GLC 300. It is powered by gas only. We are very pleased with the overall performance and design of the vehicle. Ours is loaded with every option available from Mercedes which made it a little pricey. We owned a 2019 model previously without many options. After having a more base model, the loaded model is a pleasure to own. We have owned 3 Mercedes SUV models. Very pleased with their quality, design and performance.
I was waiting for this one!! Have x3 but thinking to change, thank you!!
Just bought an Q5 55tfsi E. Added horsepower really makes the car come alive. Unfortunately choose the adaptive air suspension and it is back at the dealer again

I agree entirely with you... I would choose the cars in the same order. I am quite happy with my current plug-in hybrid. But for sure in a few years I'll change it with one of those from the 2nd hand market, probably the Mercedes GLC300e. The Lexus NX plug-in hybrid is missing from the comparison and it's as good as the Audi in my opinion.
Now that I’ve seen Bender’s face on the Mercedes’s rear seats I just can’t unsee it 😂❤ quite cute though

Hi Matt, having looked in detail at three out of the four SUVs (no experience with the Volvo) I can second you ranking Mercedes - Audi -BMW. One area you did not cover, but which is important is the charging speed. The Mercedes comes with 11kW AC charging as standard, which means that you can charge back to about 100% when you go 2 hours shopping or do a 2 hour customer visit. WLTP range 119-130km depending on options. You can even upgrade to 50kW DC charging, which turns the GLC to an ALMOST electrical car which is a good option in countries where the charging infrastructure is not well developed (my impression was that this applies e.g. to the UK, but also many parts of Southern or Eastern Europe). Admittedly, the car does not make sense in the Nordics, Benelux, Germany etc. where the range extending ICE is simply not needed anymore. The Audi charges with 7.4 kW AC, but does not have a fast charging option. WLTP range 56-62km depending on options. I guess it delivers what is typical for PHEVs in that price range with respect to charging and range. The BMW charges with veeeeeery slow 3.7 kW AC. WLTP range 51-55km depending on options. Admittedly this was still acceptable back when the X3 was introduced, it is anachronistic by today's standards.
Thamks for the details
Volvo all the way, it's so minimalistic and I care about the safety of my family. :-)
BMW X3 and Volvo XC60 😍❣️
Always good videos 😊
It would not be superfluous to note that the Volvo battery is located in the central tunnel between the front passengers and has an independent all-wheel drive system. The gasoline engine drives only the front wheels, while the rear wheels are connected only to the electric motor. This has both its pros and cons. But this is a significant difference from other cars in which the electric motor is located along with the gearbox.
Great video! I do think you missed an opportunity to test something many potential buyers of phev always wonder about as the manufacturer never are straightforward. That is, testing how they drive in ev mode only. Can it they be "locked" in ev mode to prevent the engine from turning on, and if so what is the real world performance during highway driving. Some are very enimic in ev mode which is why the engine always turns on but to many, that defeats the point of a phev. I have not found one that can do this well and I will not make the move to phev until then. Full electric is not for me either due to infrastructure limitations where I am.
You've raised a quite important issue, and I'm interested in gaining an insight on this as I and my wife are contemplating going for one of these...currently with more preference for the GCL

The Volvo does have that problem with the back doors being part of the wheel housing which unfortunately has meant for a lot of owners that it doesn’t keep tight enough and let in dirt and dust into the back seat. A shame really. The car is absolutely perfect for me in all aspects.
We had that issue when we got the car from the showroom floor. My guess is that it stood there for some time and the seals got a bit dry. I put some silicone spray on them and it's not had the issue since!
@@KnallenN good for you! I’m just a bit suspicious of that body feature on cars. I don’t think it looks good, and it has the obvious flaw of making the door sensitive to wear and potentially causing rust issues.
I have an xc60 and there is an official Volvo wheel arch liner thing that you can add if you really want. I have as I live in a muddy area and no mud gets through any more. Not an expensive part either to buy from Volvo so yes it can be an issue, but also an easy and cheap solution exists 👍🏻
Hi Carwow Could you pit a Mazda CX-60 PHEV up against some or all of these cars please? Cheers guys 🙂🤞🏼
Hello, I purchased a GLC 400e with the AMG Premium package on January 26, 2023. After two months, I experienced issues with the transmission controllers. In fact, the gearbox repeatedly failed at high speeds, especially above 160 kilometers per hour, causing significant stress and concern for my own safety and that of my family while driving on the highway. This serious risk of an accident has put me and my family in danger. After four attempts to diagnose the problem by Mercedes, starting from June 21, my vehicle has been at the Mercedes service center in Aschaffenburg, Germany. However, unfortunately, they do not have the necessary parts for the repair, and I am forced to wait until July 31. Undoubtedly, this lengthy delay has left me extremely dissatisfied and angry with Mercedes. Until today, despite sending multiple emails to Mercedes and filling out their form, they have not made any contact or taken any actions to address my concerns and seek my satisfaction.
Great review. Will you ever review the Subaru Forester I’d like to get your thoughts

I love my Volvo. The most comfortable of all that I owned. I also love the Mercedes to. But wouldn’t give up a Volvo
I think you really understated the performance difference. The Volvo is proper fast compared to significantly sportier vehicles, has great ev range, and is driveable in ev only mode. Others are just boring to drive in EV. I don't think it's much of a contest for anyone who wants a smooth, powerful, fun, roomy suv. Volvo is the first choice. 😊

I'd chose the Volvo anytime. It's just sleek, and seat comfort is what really matters, especially on long trips. Interior is just beautifully blend together, and I prefer it over any of these cars. Volovos safety is also unmatched. But then, I might be biased because I'm Volvo owner. 😅
Maybe it was the camera angle, but on the drive, it looked like the B=pillar in the Merc could be a bit of a visibility block. It seemed to be level with your head, not behind you.
I was test-driving all of them + RR Evoque and LR Discovery Sport. Volvo is way better than other cars. It has electric range of 77km + the fuel tank of 71 litres, which gives you a real 900+km of the range on te highway. Non of the other cars will do it. Also, speaking about the basic version, Volvo has much better spec. Google entertainment maybe is not so good, and no physical buttons unfortunately, but Google system on Volvo works much faster than on the other cars. I love Matt's reviews, but this one was not objective at all. Looks like only Matt's personal preferences to the brands were taken into account. Also, for Google system on Volvo, you can bind shortcuts, instead of navigating through out the system.

Luxury cars are the ones, that give us a comfort ride for a long trip. Driving 30miles distance is not giving any tireness. Actually, luxurity of the cars is defined by the comfort - Volvo is 1st here, performance - Volvo is 1st here, Equipment - the same for all cars, amenities - I would give to Audi Q5 here. The only thing, that might be not so well is a status, because of not German car. I was awaiting for this Mercedes GLC 300e for a year, after it was announced. And I was very disappointed by its quality and comfort. I had 2 Mercedeses before (C class and E class) and unfortunately, they are losing their luxurity. It's amazing how much technology has evolved over the past generation. Not the price though, they are very expensive, but I guess technology doesn't come cheap.
Technologies always costed thousand of dollars for that.
Evolved? Mate a dual clutch gearbox is from a 1970s tractor, tractors are on 6 clutch 50+speed power shift gearboxes nowadays.. and the only other thing that's changed is tyre tech has got better to allow for a much faster 60ft. The rest of the tech is junk, laggy screens instead of interior and they are becoming less aerodynamic 😂 I mean a Vauxhall Carlton from 30yr ago has lower drag Co-eff. Suspension wise they run cars stiffer now with diabolically bad dampening and rebound that confuses them over bumps, cambers & potholes. Not really sure where the hike in Tech is when motorbikes have 6 axis systems that can even prevent highsides they and have much faster electronic polling so can react a lot faster and speed up or slow down the engine way way faster as there's no internal weight in the engine. These current car engines as still lethargic as it gets on rpm change so you won't break any handling or roadholding records while the car is weight transitioning all over the place to compensate for the lazy engines. Porsche have done probably the best job as they kept the smaller 6 block and lightened it up internally so it was more responsive, the results paid off but they are a long long way from being at motorcycle engine tech levels. Lorries have better engine and gearbox tech than cars by several decades so please 🙏 don't over hype these disposable junk heaps they need to sort the build quality out for a start, they fall apart in months modern cars.

It would be interesting to see what breaks down first in the Audi. The DSG or the 2.0 TSI? As a german who worked for Mercedes and VW and never liked BMW I would go for the Volvo. My V70 got now 400.000km and runs like new. Best car I ever had.
lol, if you'd worked for VW, you would know that Audi doesn't use DSG and TSI, they have S-tronic and TFSI
@@winfle S- Tronic and TFSI are only the Audi names for DSG and TSI.
