New Lexus RX: Better than the Germans?

This is the all-new Lexus RX! Mat’s got his hands on this mid-sized Japanese SUV to see if it has what it takes to compete with premium German competitors like the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne.
Well for starters, it certainly looks the part from the outside. Lexus has followed the latest trend of having the brand’s name written on the back of the car, but sadly it’s also accompanied by a number of fake vents. Along the side, the car looks pretty impressive, with a number of creases and bits of chrome trim. Then around the front, there may be more fake vents, but the large new grille is striking and impressive.
On the inside, the RX is super stylish. Soft touch materials and leather are found throughout the cabin, and there's a decent amount of practicality to store your items. There’s a big infotainment screen in the middle of the dash, which is pretty responsive but the system isn’t the best. Similarly, the digital dial system is ok, but there are much better systems out there.
In terms of engine choices, there are two self-charging hybrid options. The entry-level is a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine coupled with two electric motors to deliver 250hp. The alternative is a 2.4-litre turbo petrol coupled with two electric motors to put produce 371hp.
Alternatively, you can choose the plug-in hybrid car we have here. This comes with the same 2.5-litre NA petrol engine as found in the entry-level, and the power output is 309hp.
So the car looks impressive and is made of high-quality materials, but while the entry-level 350h starts from around £60,000, the price can rise to above £80,000 for premium editions of the 450h or 500h!
So is it worth it? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

    • I own an 16 NX F Sport 3 (top trim in Canada) and a 21 Macan GTS...the NX feels like the economy car it's based on (the Rav4) and has had a water pump go and has an intermittent starting issues right now (I think it's leaky fuel injectors) with only 38,000km on it. I can't say the NX has been brilliant. The Macan feels much more premium and obviously drives WAYYYYYYY better.

    • @@baronvonjo1929 I mean technically they're both luxury SUVs and their prices do overlap here, at least for a top trim NX and base model Macan. Point was more that the NX, at least the first gen, wasn't flawless.

      @SomeGuysGarage@SomeGuysGarage Жыл бұрын
    • @SomeGuy's Garage They are not in the same price range in Canada. The difference between the highest NX trim and the lowest Macan trim is almost 15k (without adding options on both). Interior wise I would go with the NX. It has a nicer infotainment screen and not just a tablet that's fitted into the dashboard, it has a nicer gauge cluster, it has nicer seats with comfier bolstering, it has a nicer center console with better buttons layout and not just some linearly sorted buttons. NX interior is more premium in general (we also own both). Performance however definitely goes to the Porsche - and by a good shot.

It has cool features for the year, extremely reliable, handles well for a 3700lb luxury sedan, looks nice, very affordable, not entirely slow, super quiet and smooth at highway speed but performs in sport+ as necessary. Ive compared it to multiple german "equivalents" that friends have owned and in my opinion it trumps all of them, especially for the price. I spend 8+ hours a week in the car and have no complaints whatsoever.

  • I would like to add my 2 cents as a person who used to have a new X5 4.0 d F model and as a person who now owns Lexus RX 450L and Porsche Macan GTS. ( the Lexus belongs to my brother but i often use it ).The BMW x5 i bought new ,drove it 150.000 kms. I always try to protect my cars in all the ways possible( service them regularily ,avoid potholes ,don't accelerate on a cold engine etc. etc.) yet the BMW while it had a sporty feeling for a big vehicle ,it was far from reliable.(even left me stranded few times) . The Porsche on the other hand, has a nice sound ,somewhat fast ,corners well and all the things you would expect out of a GTS Porsche .The downsides is that it has a poor riding quality ( which is logical) the ''sport +'' seats with alcantara would make my back fully wet on longer jorneys ( not to mention how much they squeeze you ) .Overall a very fun and decent driving experience but very poor comort.We all like to look at 0-100 times and horsepower and torque and looks and lap times and all kinds of shit that we do not care/use about 90 % (literarily ) of the time of using a vehicle .Now comes the Lexus;I have around 70-80 K kilometers on it ,made in about 3 years .I kid you not but on longer jorneys 90 % of the time i take the Lexus and ditch the Porsche.The RX 450L is decently fast ( never felt like i needed more power ),EXTREMELLY roomy and comfortable + an amazing ride quality.I have friends with the new S-classs... and tbh i cant sense much difference ( aside from noise canceling).One thing i dont like about the Lexus is that ''moany '' gearbox and the sound it makes .Truthfully i dont like that gearbox but after some time u dont even notice or think about it.I have driven many cars owned by me and lots of sports/luxurious cars owned by friends. My final words would be those :IF you want to be 100 % sure about the realibility of your car -get a Lexus .IF you want to feel comfortable on long jorneys - Get a Lexus .IF you want to have a decent power to MPG ratio - Get a Lexus.If you want to have one of the most SOLID cars out there that you KNOW will work and wont give you miner shit all the time + major problems from time to time - Get a LEXUS.If you are a self confident person who is not a slave to a certain badges or what people would think of you ,based on your car - Get a Lexus.

Love the video, except......As i live in rural Scotland the paddle shifters are perfect for "engine braking" as no manual or auto box to slow the car down without using the brakes. • With the hybrid, you're better off slowing the car with a light amount of pressure on the brake which will engage regen without applying the mechanical brakes. If you use engine braking, the electric motor will need to work hard to gear down the drive output in the eCVT which negates any regen benefits.

      @davisonthealist@davisonthealist Жыл бұрын
    • @RichBayley I use the paddle shifters in my Corolla for the same. They are not useless for that purpose! And answering @BenDavies, regen only works when there is capacity in the battery to absorb it. There are plenty of hills where you end up with the battery full, and do need some additional "engine" braking.

I'm also surprised that the rear camera has no washer since since they do on this side of the pond do but then again they are built in different factories.

    • @@Natethegreat200c Something went constantly wrong with The Mercedes, the Audi and the BMW that I had. Have friends with Range Rovers and they are even worse. Driving a Toyota now, I have put a ton of miles on it and nothing has ever gone wrong. It is not me saying it. Consumer reports has Range Rovers, Mercedes, Audi's, Jaguars, BMW's as unreliable cars and Lexus and Toyota's almost always on top of the list when it comes to reliability.

      @TheSportsPROgram@TheSportsPROgram9 ай бұрын
    • @@TheSportsPROgram you listen to consumer reports 🤮. Come on man 😂. The automotive community has to stop letting these outlets spoon feed you all information. However , you said something went wrong .. but were you left stranded ? You said reliability issues , if you made it everywhere you wanted to go, your cars were never unreliable. You never were scared you’d be stranded. Are you saying they were problematic? Or had little issues ? That’s different from saying the car was unreliable. A unreliable car is something I know I can’t count on to drive me from a to b. I’m sure you could count on your German cars just as much as that Lexus. And I know you feel the step down in quality in that Lexus. The Germans and Italians have the luxury segment on lock. Lexus cars are too Toyota like and skimp on the luxury experience. I don’t know how you can even look at a Toyota after driving a German car. Crazy.

    • I had about 4 lexus cars, 1 Benz, and 4 bmw's. I can say that Lexus is more reliable and cheaper to maintain. However, in my experience that doesn't matter as I never keep cars longer than 4 to 5 years and most of the cars don't break down or have issues first 4 to 5 years. I think that lexus on has a advantage if you are keeping your car for a long time. That being said I prefer BMW over Lexus when it comes to drive and tech.
