Mazda CX-60 review: Better than the Germans?!
This is the Mazda CX-60!
It’s the latest SUV to come from the Japanese manufacturer and currently sits as the largest vehicle Mazda offers in the UK.
Starting with the design, this SUV is striking - with sharp LED headlights, alloy wheels up to 20-inches in size and a tidy rear end. Prepare to experience a little fakery on the bodywork, though…
The CX-60’s quality shines through inside too. You can have it with classy white leather on top-spec models, and some impressive technology on-board.
There’s the question of practicality though, as well as what’s it like to drive. Plus should you go with a hybrid, or one of the rare big diesels? Stick with Mat to find the answers to these, and to see if the Mazda CX-60 is worth the price tag!

Matt comparing the noise levels and suspension to luxury cars speaks levels about how upmarket Mazda has moved with their new CX-60. I think these will sell very well for those looking for a more luxurious CX-5, similar to the Lexus NX and Rav4
Imagine if CX-60 also has an engine from Ford GT...

Just watched the review and I’m completely blown away by the sophistication and elegance Mazda has instilled in the new CX-60 🤩! What do you all think, can it truly rival the Germans, especially with its compelling price point? Also, who else is intrigued by the 6 cylinders? 🔥
As a car enthusiast, I find fake exhaust tips horrendous (just like Matt does). I wouldn't ever buy a car with such fakery, regardless of how good it is otherwise. Matt had a pre-change model to test. Mazda is soundproofing the doors differently and there is no longer a strange sound when closing. The same applies to suspension work. As for acceleration: strange, but the CX60 has the best acceleration time in off-road mode.

The tinny doors have been rectified on the 2023 models, and 2022 models can get the added door suppression free of charge, they sound like they should after the work....all in all the car and for the money will outdo most German equivalent, and not forgetting..it is a Mazda, and will never let you down, unlike some German offerings....great review....
"never let you down" Only mine did. It had this horrible thrumming sound between 25 and 45 MPH - sounded like a window left open a bit and the resonance that you get. But it seemed to be from the transmission. They tried to fix it (prop shaft replacement) but failed, then no-one seemed to know what to do. Not just my car - they had some others with the same issue and people on forums were reporting the issue - some dating back to December 2022 and still no fix. Only on the PHEV. I ended up returning it. Shame as it was a really nice car but I lost confidence in the technology and the support processes.
Not heard of this issue, on a forum too, no talk of this one, which forum was it on?
I've had various Mazda's including a couple of Mazda 6 models. Great cars. Brilliantly reliable.
@@jdmguy44 Soo.. why do you think I bought the CX-60 PHEV? I had expectations of using it as a retirement vehicle. Sadly that did not work out. When something (that the dealership and Mazda network) could not resolve after a couple of attempts in my car - and others - I lost confidence in tis vehicle being a long term proposition. The issue appeared to be that 'something' in the drive train (apparently) seemed to be 'wrong', assembly issue, misaligned parts, out of balance shafts, no-one seems to know... then you have to wonder if the vibrations underlying the 'thrumming' will leave the owner with a series of transmission related issues down the line. after warranty has expired etc. It's a new and very cool drive train (one of the reasons I bought it - I liked the concept) but it does have an ICE with clutch in line with the EV motor and another clutch and the 8 speed gearbox. Great idea (you always have 4 wheel drive irrespective of EV / ICE / Hybrid drive) but it seems that if it has not been assembled well or there is a duff part then you have issues.

Mat, the PHEV CX-60 doesn't have turbocharger or supercharger. It uses Mazda 2.5L naturally aspirated I-4. I don't know if they use an ISG on the PHEV, but that whine definitely sounds like some sort of belt whine.
Fun little quirk: you can "rev" the electric engine. The electric motor is actually spinning the drive shaft, instead of the wheels. So you can keep it in park and rev it up and you'll get that turbo like charger noise
I think this model will do very good. Quite comfy, good materials, good sound, pretty good looking, and did not have any brake issue (cough cough).
Yep. CX-60 despite its quite dull to drive like Ford Expedition and Chrysler Phaeton, its still enjoyable tho.
Proud to say I own one and it’s such a beauty to drive, so relaxing, only gripe I have is rear end over speed humps, feels like a bucking bronco lol. On the other hand the sport mode brings out the dragon in the car!!

The Jeep Avenger was not only so bad it broke down 4 times, the video was also removed from carwow's channel.
Holy crap you're right!! that's not good for Carwow integrity! I review wrist watches on my channel and had a brand threaten to sue me if I didn't remove a review of one of their watches as they were not satisfied with what I had to say. YES, FINALLY, A new Mazda review on CarWow, as a Mazda fan I have missed you reviewing them :')
I was amazed how little suave there was in the rear seats, felt very cramped for the size of car
How far does the EV mode go in the PHEV and how efficient is it city/highway once it switches to hybrid mode?
Been running one of these CX- 60 PHEVS for the last 3 months and have nicknamed it "The Bungalow" as it is a big SUV. Bad points, very firm suspension, never really feels planted, particularly on motorways, so not overly relaxing to drive and the combined fuel economy (I charge it regularly) has never bettered 39mpg and it has safety features that annoy, two in particular, for no real reason it will sound a warning and flash on the screen "Distracted Driver Detected" which means if you weren't you certainly are now and when driving on a road that has parked cars on both sides and you reach a slight bend it sounds an even louder warning and a big "Brake" appears on your screen as it believes a collision is imminent, this has the ability to scare the bejesus out of you and any passengers on board. Good points, lots of space, great standard spec (although I agree that ACC should be part of that) great driving position and with a fully charged battery, Sports mode will see you surprise more than a few drivers on how it can move, particularly the mid range acceleration which is somewhat brisk to say the least. Overall a good value for money SUV which can be seen as a credible alternative to the likes of BMW and Audi.
Hey. Did you experience any issues with your car? Especially 12v battery warning?
@@pawkaster Nothing on the 12v battery warning but plenty elsewhere. For clarity I am running this as a company car so the issues have had minimal impact on me personally but could on a private buyer. The initial CX60 went back to a Mazda dealership as the steering was faulty, which I believe is a known fault with a particular batch of cars, which involves a complete replacement steering rack that has to come from Japan and can be anything up to 3 months to arrive (after my first had been in the garage for 5 weeks I rung and they simply could not tell me when it was likely to arrive and the repair completed) Spoke with the lease company and they sent me a replacement, which promptly broke down on the way to my house with a complete electrical failure and the dashboard doing a good impression on the Blackpool illuminations. Back to the lease company, another one was to be sent, this one had an issue with the bonnet not being able to close properly, back again to the lease company and I am now on my 4th CX60 which, in the 6 days and 450 miles driven is seemingly holding together although for how long who knows?? One thing I will say is that, through all of this, Mazda have been really "on point" with their customer service and this is the main reason I have stayed with the brand and model despite being offered a variety of different cars via the leasing company.
Couple points, the 3 pin plugs are optional, and as much as the spec down is technically a spec down, its not really. The equipment level is the same. Just because it's a little cheaper its identically equipped. I imagine the price differences are the interior materials and the diamond cut wheels. It's also not turbocharged like you said at the end of the video. The engine is NA, like 90% of the other engines in Mazdas. The only turbo engines are the diesels

Feels like Matt is being a bit biased agaisnt Mazda here. I have an Audi A4, latest gen(b9) pre face lift. My neighbour has just bought the CX60, and it is goergeous on the inside!!! I prefer it over my A4. Don't get me wrong, the A4 has a nice interior, but it doesn't wow you like the CX60, maybe cos mines is all black. And for some reason the CX60 felt huge too, the dimensinos aren't honestly that much bigger, a few cm's here and there, but just feels and looks chunky. And mind you, I chose an A4 over a Q5 since the A4 felt a bit nicer.

Mazda hands down has the best interior quality for its OLD competitors. However, targeting higher-end market, it needs to do a little bit more on the materials and feels such as the door-closing sound and driving feels for a comfy, luxurious vehicle.
Compare the prices though.

Totally agree about the fake exhausts. So ridiculous, when will they stop??

I’m seeing these everywhere in the UK at the moment. Does Mazda have a 0% deal on for these or something?
oh Mafffew (🙃)... You know why manufacturers do not put real exhaust through the body cladding? You notice that particular Mazda has the real exhaust outlets pointed downwards. The manufacturers don't want to have to resolve issues with potentially melted body panels and trim bezels. They also don't want sooty deposits on the rear (especially with the Euro diesels). Try not to be so disappointed next time...😀
I love Matt keep saying he needs his own late night show here in USA he would be a hit❤
It looks so good good job matt
LMFAOO THAT SUPERCHARGER NOISE
Can you do the review of the diesel 3.3. AWD ?
It's like an interim proposition from main stream to luxury. Given the price point, why spend the extra cash for just a little bit more. Also the interior looks absolutely well built and well thought off as to be in the luxury segment.
It's been quite some time since the last Mazda review. Happy to see one again.
Will you be doing a review of the Renault Austral? Love to see that.
Matt surely loves his Garmin. Had to switch the Citizen for it for the B-roll.
