While guiding in the Kruger National Park, me and my guests came across this breeding herd of elephants who were about to cross the road and we decided to stop and watch them cross. That's when this little one appeared from the long grass and had us entertained for a while. He clearly was frustrated with his trunk if you look at the way he was shaking it, blowing air through it and trying to step on it. The reason he is doing this is not known but it could be that there might have been something in his trunk that made it itch or maybe he just didn't understand this long thing on his face... either way it was very funny and made our day...

  • Elephants have over 40,000 muscles in their trunks and it can take up to a year, sometimes more, before a baby elephant learns to coordinate them to be able to use its trunk properly, that's what the baby is trying to do. Until they manage to do this they will just use their mouths to get fluids, rather than using their trunks to suck it up and blow it into their mouths.

What "fantastical "interactions just like humans. Wonderful creatures!!

They certainly command respect. Btw- have you seen the clip of the safari who came across several HUGE and lots of smaller and baby elephants? The photographer was on/outside of the jeep, they surrounded him and were within inches of this poor/lucky guy. The matriarch decided to let them cautiously back up and away, but omg.. • It's so sad poachers kill them for the ivory. Wonder how the poachers would like having their teeth pulled and sold on eBay?! That would make them think twice before poaching these precious animals! Or any animal!

  • Well all babies have to learn how to use their appendages. I imagine a trunk is harder to use considering the prehensile and length aspects of it.

    • An elephant trunk has 40.000 muscles in them, plus it's on their face, like an arm-nose, so it's no wonder baby elephants struggle in learning to use them. xD

  • At about 2:20, the other young elephant goes down on its front legs and rubs its trunk on the ground. I wonder if maybe they both had something in their trunks. Hopefully nothing more serious than hay fever.

    • +QZ Sue That's what I was thinking, too. They were acting like something was irritating their trunks. Maybe allergies? Insect bite?

      @annehaight9963@annehaight99638 жыл бұрын
    • Anne Haight These commenters don't know elephant behavior, especially of the young. They are playing, there is nothing wrong with them, nothing irritating them. Infant elephants have to learn to use their trunks, and for that, they mess with it. The older youngster was fine, and messing around exactly as that age group of elephant does. No hay fever, no insect in their trunk, just completely typical elephant behaviors for each age group.

      @cacatr4495@cacatr44958 жыл бұрын
    • I think the older elephants were trying to show the baby what to do! The bigger one sneezes and flicks its trunk, the smaller one gets on its knees.
