    • To be fair, in most armies three people taking on a force of over 20,000 enemies, killing thousands of them over multiple sorties and coming back without a single casualty would result in those soldiers being given the country's highest medal of bravery. In Australia, that's just considered to be a failure.

  • For the RPG-2: strapping wood to the outside of the vehicle isn't a dumb idea (surprisingly). The RPG explodes on contact, but if the contact is a soft wood instead of a hard steel it may actually fail to detonate, saving the vehicle. This obviously only works for the RPGs though, as conventional rifle ammo will breeze through it, so it's a very niche solution.

    @stevehook7012@stevehook7012Ай бұрын
    • Even if it does explode having it explode against the wood defeats the effectiveness of the HEAT (High Explosive Anti Tank) round. These are shaped-charges design to explode on the surface of the armour - having them explode several inches away from the armour will stop the round from penetrating the armour.

  • 19:30 The purpose of the wood is actually not to provide stopping power, but to move the explosion of the rpg round farther away from the vehicle's actual armor which gives the armor a better chance of protecting everything under it. This concept is still used today in modern tanks in multiple countries in the form of metal grills over the armor.

  • The wood actually helped. Shaped charge warheads consist of an explosive that accelerates and liquifies metal, tipically copper at hypersonic speeds, but the speed significantly drops the more distance it has to travel. The wood detonates the weak warhead of the RPG pre-maturley at a distance from the armor, potentially saving the soldiers inside the vehicle. Shout out to Not What You Think for making a video on shaped charges and many more topics.

  • The thing with Caligula is that when he first came to power he was actually competent and well loved by the people and his soldiers. Then he fell ill with a severe fever that nearly killed him but he recovered. It was after his recovery that he started behaving the way he is most well known for so some historians hypothesize that the illness damaged something in his brain.

Also, I think RPGs explode on contact, so having the warhead detonate against the 'wooden ablative armour' as opposed to the vehicle itself might dissipate a lot of the destructive force. Or not. Also their skin is quite tough, their bones are very dense and they can take a lot of damage before they go down. Professional shooters often struggle to take one down with a single shot from a precision rifle which is why there's so much outrage about the frequent culls to keep their numbers under control.

  • So, wooden planks are the PERFECT defense for shaped charge warheads like on anti-vehicle RPGs. The wood doesn't melt under the high pressure stream of liquid metal shot out of the warhead and absorbs a large amount of the blast. Wood is also very cheap, easy to install and light weight. Soldiers in WWII on both sides used to place wooden logs on their tanks to stop panzerfaust and bazooka rounds. And it worked great.

  • Actually, the wood helps a lot against RPGs. RPGs work by concentrating the blast to 1 small point, making them really strong. But the same as laster cutters, the farther it gets from the main target, the less effective it is because the light or in the case of RPGs spreads from that 1 focused point. The difference is day and night by just adding those pieces of wood.

  • But... Wooden logs and planks DO work against old fashion grenade propelled rounds, No? From what I heard, Philippine were losing men to such RPG inside those vehicles, the idea was to force the round to explode OUTSIDE of the armor rather than ON the armor, which in my knowledge worked and saved many lives, allowing them to win over the rebels and their RPGs rendered less useful, as those rounds do explode on contact, rather than "Penetrate" in which the armor of those vehicles are strong enough to withstand blast shrapnel but probably not the blast itself, do correct me if I'm wrong~

  • Strapping wood or tree trunks to armored vehicles is a historically tested tried and true method of dispersing the explosive power of rounds against your armor. It was done often in WW2 as photos will show.

  • The rpg-2 is an older version of the rpg-7. The RPG uses a shaped charge which directs a metal jet to penetrate the armor. However the wood will put some distance between the impact and the actual steel armor and the jet of metal will have less velocity and more spread when it hits the actual armor allowing the round to be stopped. As a matter of fact they were genius and it is still used today in spaced armor as protection against heat and he rounds in tanks and slat armor in armored personal carriers and Humvees.

  • about the tanks armored with wooden planks: modern anti-tank weaponry are kind of precision instruments. they are highly specialized weapons made to penetrate steel armor plates off a certain thickness and then release high speed shrapnel or directed explosives at the soldiers inside the tank, killing them pretty much instantly. but what would happen if said directed explosives made for metal don't hit metal? well, a lot of their concentrated power would be lost, making even stacks of cardboard an effective countermeasure. if it looks stupid but works, it's not stupid. this is why modern armor usually has multiple layers with different materials and sometimes even air gaps in between. all of it is to make sure armor penetration weaponry has a hard time delivering their deadly payload to the other side of the armor. well, it is one of the reasons at least.

  • The wood armour makes the rockets detonate before getting through to the metal otherwise there would be a big hole and a lot of damage so have wood over the armour is actually quite smart
