Woodturning - I Can't Believe This Worked!
I haven’t made a vase or used this type of finish in a while so I thought it would be a good idea to combine the two. This finish always looks great and is actually really fun to do. The Ash log was sanded to 240 grit and then sprayed with ebonising spray, after this was rubbed down, I layer of gold gilt cream was applied.
The vase is over 245mm high and 100mm at its widest point.
Let me know what you think and if you want to see more pieces with the black and gold finish.

My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I am still relatively new to woodturning and some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest. When using any tools or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines.
Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.

Hello Harry! Here’s why I liked this video: I also use HSS tools and carbide studs. These are sometimes very useful. I liked the different phases of machining mixing HSS and platelet tools. And the finish is really very successful, you made a very beautiful object!

@@HarrySmithShorts I have expanded my knowledge of diverse subjects due to the pandemic. I work in a public library, so I love learning new things. I have very little experience in woodworking, but took a class in middle school in the 1970's, one of three girls to in a woodshop ever at the middle school. I never got the opportunity to turn wood back then. But I enjoy watching others create. So as for techniques, I have no suggestions at all, I'm just watching to learn and be entertained, but I love art!
Looks awesome. Maybe look into using an ebonizing solution instead of spray paint. If needed you can also boost the darkness by using a tannin solution on woods that don’t have a bunch of tannins before ebonizing the piece.

That came out beautifully! I really like how you stop as you work, it looks like you are seeing what the wood has to say about the finished product. That either sounds nuts or you know EXACTLY what I mean, I do the same thing with other art forms, even what belongs in a painting or drawing and what to leave out. :)

Great video Harry. Use of gold leaf on ebony background really brought out the veins of the wood. Do you build these items purely on inspiration or based on something that you have seen or liked? It seems that you create these items without lots of measurements so they are unique items.

What an awesome gaint vase you've turned and I like the black spray paint, I was abit weary at first. The grain is great and the gold finishes it off. Was it soft or hard wood to turn? Well done Harry

Interesting. How deep is the internal cavity? Is it protected with some sort of finish? We can’t really tell. Can the finished piece actually hold a bouquet of flowers and water?
Thanks for watching Gary! The cavity goes to the bottom of the vase and it is protected by sanding sealer, however it wouldn't be able to hold water 😊👍

@@HarrySmithShorts I'm always intrigued by hollowing. I can turn the shape you did (not as well) but hollowing still challenges me.
