In this video Alan Watts pulls back ‘the human game, digging into language, ethics, finding balance, and the art of the controlled accident. • It means if it's on your mind, it will shine with importance. When you put it on the back burner, it has reduced importance. When you no longer think about it, it has no importance. I'm referring to subjective importance opposed to objective importance. You still need to breathe if you don't think about it's significance, but basically it is the attention and intentions of the individual that determines importance and not the properties of what you find important. It's the relationship you have to the thing and how salient it is to you in the moment. For example, almost all people above a certain age have experienced a break up. In the moment of being broken up with it hurts so bad you can't stand it and you desire so badly for things to return to the way they used to be. Check in with that same individual 2 years later, and unless they've committed suicide or developed an unhealthy obsession or depression, they've likely moved on. Found someone or something else to give them purpose. In the moment of the break up that individual may say the pain is so unbearable and the break up was super significant but the same person 2 years later, if they deal with it in a healthy way, has probably boiled the relationship down to a few teachable moments and rarely considers the last person beyond that. Nothing changed about the events but the individuals attention and intentions changed, which changes what you find salient, and thus what was once the most significant moment in your life has been reduced to so much pillow talk.

In fact the more I think about how great this quote is, it intensifies in my mind until it becomes the only piece of philosophy I will ever need…until I start thinking about something else. In fact, now that I think about that- I just realized I’m 42 years old and have no idea what I wanna be when I grow up? Back to square one.

  • Classic Alan Watts :) He's the only guy i know of that speaks about the play of life, as a game, and like any player of music knows, the more knowledge and skills one aquires along the way and the more one can do with the playing, the more interesting and fun it gets, and that we do it for it's own sake, not to "get somewhere", but to enjoy living in a uniquely human way, right where we are. Trying to put this stuff into words isn't easy!

  • No different from dreaming. We dream about other characters and dialogue with them. We made them all up. We are just talking to ourselves in the dream. But we pretend we are not by dreaming these scenarios. Once you are lucid and see the dream is made up, the dream dissolves and you wake up, because the truth is revealed. Unless you can hold your attention and keep dreaming and playing the game. The trick is to know this is a grand dream and we are playing God’s game.

  • This is amazing. I'm really enjoying listening to Alan discussing the the nuance and meaning of our existence. However, positioning our reality as a zero-sum game where winning necessarily creates losing, while beautifully symmetric and easy to internalize, is problematic and possibly just wrong as a general principle. Using the marketplace analogy puts an obvious focus on this. When I buy something from a seller, is it true that he wins and I lose or vice versa? Buyers and sellers both winning is a regular feature of a healthy transaction.

  • Another comparison is we can take everything we learn in all of our many lifetimes in the 3rd dimension and see we have played every role, and in every way now know and understand what it's like to get by without the Love God and Creation meant for us and is our genuine state of being. Not so much for lessons, but for "experience." Learning love, as all we need is love.

But it's inescapable, and the biggest suckers are those who just go on in life accepting all they're told, all the norms, etc. Just some thoughts, I know there's no correct or most righteous answers. Most people tend to want to believe if they struck it rich, won the lottery, became a vice president, etc. It'd do Nothing But Good for their life. To hell with the simple way of life. More choices and power must equate to more happiness right???
