Some great Quotes from the works of Alan Watts:
"The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.
To have faith is to trust yourself to the water. When you swim you don't grab hold of the water, because if you do you will sink and drown. Instead you relax, and float.
You don't look out there for God, something in the sky, you look in you
We cannot be more sensitive to pleasure without being more sensitive to pain.
Never pretend to a love which you do not actually feel, for love is not ours to command.
I owe my solitude to other people.
The ego is nothing other than the focus of conscious attention.
No work or love will flourish out of guilt, fear, or hollowness of heart, just as no valid plans for the future can be made by those who have no capacity for living now.
You are that vast thing that you see far, far off with great telescopes.
Trying to define yourself is like trying to bite your own teeth
You and I are all as much continuous with the physical universe as a wave is continuous with the ocean.

  • And the truly mind-blowing thing about Alan's teaching, is when we listen to him we are not really learning. It's already in us. We have just forgotten. We can't help but resonate.

  • I had a life changing experience not so long ago, and the way I looked at the world changed completely. Not just my values and ideals, but literally the way it looked is different. It's tough to convey to others, but it's somewhere between seeing the world through a third person perspective, and seeing my life as an infinite series of slides. I can't pretend things matter anymore. I can't go back to the way I used to be. I feel shell shocked, looking around at the world, with the veil lifted for the first time. I grapple with the idea that maybe I have had a psychotic break, that maybe I'm crazy or delusional, but I feel lucid, reasonable. It's as though I was navigating life as a maze, and suddenly I've been lifted over the walls, and can see the whole thing from above. It makes exploring the maze seem psychotic. It makes looking for purpose, happiness within the maze seem silly. In any sense, Alan Watts helps me feel comfortable with this revelation. Maybe the world looks very different to me, now, but that's okay. Throughout my life I will have many understandings of the world around me, some more useful, some less. Either way, peace, compassion, and thoughtfulness are admirable principles, and to work towards a better understanding of my own mind is a worthwhile quest. Thanks to Watts and the community.

    • I felt that the ego is the third person idea. When I listened to Watts I felt that I had up to now constantly been seeing myself from the third person, but that the real me is the subjective experience itself, pure "first person consciousness" that suffuses all life, the "I Am" of God/Atman.

Both sides of the mirror are both the source and the reflection. Nothing exists unless there is something else to observe it. Reflection is the only way to create another you, if you are the only one that exists. This is how ONE can become TWO, in order to bring the ONE into existence.

  • Some people say we live in a matrix, or a holographic universe. The better analogy would be, that we are living “as a reflection”. As a reflection of source(or God). ONE cannot know the color of ONE’s own eyes without observing oneself in a reflection. The reflection gives the illusion that two exist, thus giving ONE the ability to observe itself. To become aware of the color of ONE’s own eyes.

As we evolve, we develop potentials for greater realizations of that One consciousness. We develop concepts of it, all kinds of philosophies and systems of belief, but we always fall short of an accurate identification. Its potentials are limitless and the value, the real realization, is to realize that you are a part of it. There is no separation. Since you come from it, you are like a leaf on a cosmic tree and its not just you or a lower form of life... it is every atom in the universe.

  • Personally, when I use the article "I" in speech, it's used in such a way that the audience listening associates the concept being explained or the story being told as something personal. The article "I" is used as a frame of reference for the listener, so that they understand the data that follows is a personal interpretation of an experience rather than a repetition of an external influence. "I" is just a trigger word to symbolize it comes from within, rather than the world itself

  • This is straight from the heart. I have strone away from God at one point and leaned on the universe yet it did not work and that was because there is a God who made the creation and growth of this world and many others in other galaxies. The Lord breathed life into us that was the beginning of growth the lord God let us grow in earth therefore having the ability to explore our consciousness and other ideas. But there is a God almighty and I feel like I truly belong in his kingdom. I feel truly a part of a church in a spiritual sense like my conscious is breaking through and being lifted. I dont feel like I should be in church anymore once I received the spirit of jesus I feel like I am one with the church and that my being and myself belongs there.

    • Also just a side note, when I say "I myself" i feel a sense of entitlement, like I'm proving myself or that I myself stands out and is different

    • I haven’t listened to this guy a lot, idk if he ever received the Spirit of Christ or not? It doesn’t seem like he had a personal experience with Christ Christ saved my life. Changed my life 4/21/81

  • “Who am I”? Watts explains why God is as much a mystery to me as I am to myself. Every “I am” echos (manifests) the great “I am” of God.
