Money isn’t everything - A new definition of wealth | DW Documentary
Most investing is aimed at generating as much profit as possible. But that’s slowly changing. Some people are now working on a new definition of wealth. The idea: earn money and put it to good use. But how?
The Kenyan company BURN is developing a resource-friendly oven for the country’s rural populace. Large areas of forest are often cut down to meet the huge demand for firewood. The new oven aims to change that. The company needs capital if it is to expand.
This capital is organized by Olga Dickmann, through what’s known as crowdinvesting: instead of putting their money into anonymous funds, investors can choose this model to specifically promote sustainable, environmentally-friendly projects. And those investments don’t necessarily have to be big. Small sums from many backers facilitate larger investments. Funders receive their investment back at a later date with interest.
Investing money while doing good at the same time - an approach that’s also being pursued in the German city of Münster. For decades, the city has been a pioneer in local climate protection. It invests in what’s known as ‘climate trainers’: Local people who are trained to become CO2 experts, then go on to advise households and companies. The program has been an outright success: Since its launch, the annual carbon dioxide emissions of Münster households are a total of 2.5 tons less than that of the average German household.
The Engemann family from the region of Höxter grows organic fruit, vegetables and cereals. They’re well-connected and support other organic smallholdings in the area. In 2020, they compiled what’s known as a balance sheet for the common good. This not only shows the financial profits from their business, but also its social and ecological value.
It’s a model that’s gained a foothold internationally too: nations like Scotland, New Zealand and Iceland no longer want to measure their wealth by GDP alone, but also in consideration of new indicators of success such as social justice and eco-friendliness.

It's becoming rare to see positive role models on KZhead. Because good people don't scream for attention. These people have integrity.
for real. We need to focus more on this instead of these clickbait titles that invoke negativity
I literally have no chance at being recognized for my decades of hard work. No coin, no connections, no clout, no crews, no computer code, no nothing. 😁But, I just keep trying. I keep working. People will Know the power of silence and simplicity
These communities that people are starting and cultivating are wonderful and inspirational. The world would be in a better place I’d we had more like these.
Dignity and humility, not arrogance and lust for money. I respect these guys, and I'll follow them closely.
Health, experiences, family, friends, spirituality, and dictating your time can also equate to wealth. ❤
They don't equate wealth. They're different things. It's strange and a bit ridiculous that wealth and the pursuit thereof is so dominant in our society and culture to the point where we have to redefine wealth to include everything else.
You can't have health, experiences , a family , time with friends and dictating your time with no money when the billionaires start investing on services and products that benefit the world instead of just looking for more profit then I will follow suit.
Only if you have a comfortable bank balance. Being comfortable is the goal if one knows how to use the funds efficiently with little waste. I am a proud miser and can say what you wrote is my definition of happiness too but only because I have the discipline to minimize financial waste.
If you don't have money, you won't be able to spend as much time enjoying your friends and family, beacuse you need to invest time working hard to get the things that you need to survive.Paying for a house, medical expenses and food can be a hassle, so eventhough money don't buy happiness it does help.
Yeah u are right. But the things u counted like family and health are the most precious and priceless.can't be equated with wealth❤
Money isn't the most important thing in the world but money can affect the most important thing in your life😊
Lovely initiative 😊❤More power to these people.
Such a great initiative by the people and the government.
The BGM makes this look like an infomercial rather than a documentary, Feels like I'm being sold a product
Agree 🤣
Wonderful work! And a treat to watch this film.
I like this documentary. A new way people see what wealth is.

Very informative !!!
DW does very good documentaries to bring to light the various industries too. This creates awareness, happiness, sharing and learning. I believe the people being interviewed also feel very proud and happy for the work they do. We can all appreciate. You guys are the new UN!!!
Thanks for watching and sharing your positive feedback. We are happy to hear you are enjoying our content!
This all makes perfect sense - we do better when we work together. 'Success' needn't be measured, solely, on profit and material possession. Many are coming to see that doing good for others is a more rewarding investment, than simply seeing life as a scramble over others for 'more'. Humanity faces many challenges right now, and the type of economy discussed here, seems as good for the individual, as it does in contributing to the greater society. Shorter supply chains, sourcing and investing locally - all these initiatives - sound reasonable, as well as sustainable.
wonderful documentary ....it gave me so much info about how wonderfully a well being economy can impact people's lives.
Thank you for watching!
loved this! learn a lot of things.
The intentions of the "leaders" in this video is admirable. Their goals seem to align with that of their society's needs. I am sure accumulating money and wealth is not moved from the equation, but it is inclusive to the community. Wealth in family, love, money, health etc.
Think you so much it is great work 👍👍👍
So inspiring, all countries must follow this pattern to make the world better and happier place to live for everyone!
Why is it almost always those who don't have to worry about money that say that money isn't everything. The net time i see a homeless person, ill just tell them to get the laptop out and invest in some green company to feel good about yourself and someday, you may star in a DW documentary.
One of my friends worked for an EU project also trying to improve air quality by providing cooking stoves to african nations... What they found is that most of these families simply sold the system that was given to them as it was expensive and they preferred the cash / keep burning wood stoves. That man should have invested closer to home where you know corruption / greed isn't going to waste your money. Buy solar panels for your own roof for instance...
I don’t blame them for selling the stoves if they are desperate for money. It’s important to co-create solutions with all stakeholders to ensure the solution is viable.
thank you
Money is not everything but everything needs money
Much, much true, hope many people in the all world think and practice this good thinks for anyone.
Wonderful video!!
I feel like this is actually a much older idea of 'prosperity' than the neoliberal version.
So I think people are naturally good and caring for others. Profit driven ideologies like neoliberalism are unnatural.
This is great 👍🏾😊
That is the way to live our lives! Very inspiring video! Thank you 🥰
PEOPLE NEED TO REALIZE MONEY IS A IMAGINARY BELIEF!!! True wealth is being able to live off grid, having your own food, your own water, and electricity. Being dependent on yourself and others who share the same goals, which can help build a caring community !!
But to live of the grid you also need money if not everyone would be off the grid by now but even for that you have to save up a lot of money
And then the alarm goes off ........and you wake up. 😮
Earning money is not easy but how to spend it rightly is also a never -ending stories. Thank you very much for your concern and considered your actual and picked topics
Hats off DW Documentary my favorite channel God bless you all.

Still not convinced . A large portion of the alternative small organic businesses asking for serious money from the end consumer once the product is (mostly unnoticed) on the markets. In my hometown of Gothenburg (Sweden) there has been a explosion of very small private beer brewery's , someone told me they are about 50 (!) in this small town. All run by young enthusiasts (Lets call them Hipsters for the sake of being blunt) And so....their products sell for more than 4x the price as a commercial brand. I dont get it. I´m all for a "new" definition of wealth. But clearly you got to be a relativity wealthy consumer buying overpriced fancy stuff like that ??? So , I think its mainly a marketing ploy , a window of opportunity trying to change consumer behavior (Aimed at the relativly wealthy people). But not convinced that this is sustainable for a business idea in the long run. Lets say 5 years from now. Many of them will go bust and the business model as a company is wiped out completely, not transferable for a new buyer who may want to take over the concept of the business
Totally agree with you
will only make a change if the very wealthy are paying more taxes and are properly redistributed among society for all kinds of social benefits. AND ending factory farming
They also failed to show the actual berry pickeers. I wonder if african imigrants really have any say or at least fair pay.
DW has done a good work I watched it in pleasure and got a new point of view

Insightful
I can’t deny money is necessary for pretty much almost everything in one’s life, but the key is to not make money your only priority.
Here's the thing. For those who have no money, having it will solve all their problems. Even for those of us who have a comfortable bank balance, it is still important because I (being lower middle class) for 1 worked hard to maintain and grow my comfortable bank balance. I can say money doesnt bring happiness because I feel secure. I have friends who (make as much or more than i do) dont have the discipline I do and are struggling to start saving. Only for those of us who know how to manage our personal funds can we say we don't need any more than what we have. Having too much bring problems too.

But even if you have a little money you can invest in a lot of different ideas this spreading out the possibility of a bankruptcy.
@heathercampbell2045 I have the bulk of my money locked away in multiple long-term investments that i contribute to regularly. All of it has been built up little by little over the past decade.
Yep I worked very hard to pay off all my student loans so now I have to save up as much as possible to make up for how much I spent on my loans. But I did it and now I have no debt so that alone gives me a good sense of security.

Success is achieving financial independence without harming others - reaching a level of financial independence from which you can tell anyone at any time to go F themselves. That is success. Another definition of success is: leaving a legacy of created works which last through the ages, even if the creators have died penniless. (Remember what Tom Edison said: "I'm not interested in inventing something which will not sell.") There are many areas of human enterprise: family, career, political, personal, spiritual, etc. One can be successful in one area and a failure in another, but spiritual success is the foundation.
Better to die in a mansion than a shack. Money does away with many indignities. But I understand fully the visceral desire to make the world a better place. Sadly, good causes often don't make [much] money.
Mansion or shack we’re all going into the ground, dust to dust
Better if no one lives in a a mansion or a shack and we all have comfortable, safe and functional housing. It's shouldn't be about excess or poverty, it should be about having a basic standard of living. Some will always have more and some will always have less, but we need to eliminate the extremes.
I was taught better give and feel you have more rewarding existence that can't put a price tag on.
Im an organic farmer here in phils.also a climate change advocates.this video help me a lot. a small farmer with small capital value the health of customera than profit❤
Despite all these people doing incredible things I hate that this is necessary. Government and oil companies say it is "up to us" to solve many issues. NO. Perhaps the german gov should be investing more in renewables instead of burning more brown coal / coal. What we need is to double wind and solar energy production ASAP. Making renewable soap bars or asking individuals to think conscientiously may work for some but 90% don't care sadly. Incentive models need to change. The gov. needs to TAX meat consumption HARD. No more subsidies. Larger taxes on fossil fuel using cars, subsidize ev cars, solar systems for homes, heat pumps etc. Make flying more expensive. Every imported good needs a carbon tax that will be directly used to fund renewable systems / offset carbon.
Yes. I have a Burn-Jikokoa stove and its energy saving unlike the traditional stoves. This is personal climate deniers. And investing in climate conscious projects is way to go. Right now Kenya is experiencing winter like conditions, the US and Europe experiencing extreme heat waves. We need climate change consciousness to inform decision-making moving forward.
Thanks Stefan... I have a jikokoa here in Kenya in a town called Meru and i love it. Blessings to you and your family
Everything requires money... Just because you earn them legally doesn't mean that ethical investment should be generalized as Non-profits for tax exemption...
If its truly ethical and benefits a lot of people without hurting, damaging environment, being anti competitive. Why not ?

Strong civil society with voice and influence to balance and check commercial and political powers.. equate to wellbeing economy. The scary subtext here shows how many areas in the world have eroded their humanity/civil society to the extent that they cannot even remember how e.g. a church/ngo/public benefit company did good in exactly the same ways.. The more the world changes, the more we repeat the same patterns.. hopefully with incremental gains along the way. Blessings, peace and prosperity. Thanks for great positive content DW ❤
All money gained should benefit humanity and this planet. The era of greed and evil is over and those evil overlords will be charged with crimes against the planet and all of its inhabitants. Evil will not win, ever…
You are dreaming. It is a lovely dream, but just a dream. Money rules.
Yes of course we are heading even faster to environmental and societal destruction and the billionaires are spending hundreds of millions every year on propaganda instead of useful investments to help the world.
I wish but it seems they've been winning for almost a century now
Pallet heating using mirrors and compressed air. It's so sustainable,e g. Less co2 and thirty percent less costly. Great
so nice to see these initiatives, it would be great if they reduce usage of Paper (especially Germany 😜)
I have liked the ' Wellbeing Economy ' concept in Scotland.
When they talk about deforestation in Madagascar they attribute the causes to people cooking, but a quick look on wikipedia says otherwise: "Primary causes of forest loss include slash-and-burn for agricultural land (a practice known locally as tavy) and for pasture, selective logging for precious woods or construction material, the collection of fuel wood (including charcoal production) and, in certain sites, forest clearing for mining." Classic green colonial capitalism. It's nice that they are inventing better stoves, but don't sell them as if they are actually addressing an issue. But also where is the metal being sourced, and by whom, and are the workers compensated fairly, or are all profits going out of the country, etc...
Great documentary!! It can really help people have different insight about the capitalism. We can make our world better. I can see hope from this video!
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
Yes DW, money isn't everything only for middle class and upper middle class family. But money is everything for upscale family.
Bioland certified products are more expensive than the usual food prices. People pay for this and it's fine. Whereas in Ireland people spend other people's money according what they think it's the best investment. For sure there are many communities that need funds for their projects. Who decides to spend the tax money and is it really placed efficiently where it's most needed?

I don't consider this a new idea at all, but for some it may come as a surprise that money doesn't buy happiness. Coincidentally I just made a community post about this exact topic, whether business is better off working to improve society than to profit at any cost
Spending money is just as important as making it.
GDP won't smile, but people will. Wholesale won't smile, but wholesome will.

Of course not. There are things like social capital, cultural capital, intellectual capital, appearance capital, etc. Many other things than mere money can be considered valuable. However, for businesses, they always need to think about the bottom line, even if it is more long term. That is the nature of capitalism. Endless growth and interest on interest.

ery good video. Thank you for showing this direction, where manny can't imagine such way of living, because capitalism teached them not see it and not think about it. As well unfortunately capitalistic economic system makes no difference in TAX paying for such companies.
Money is not everything. Value is everything. Everything that has value makes a person very happy. Money is only a physical form of value indicator i.e. a medium of payment that reflects something of value. Money is a tool of public trust. Public trust is value. Public trust is about accountability and transparency. We use money i.e. public trust, to pay for our needs. Money has to be traceable i.e. tracked by the public because it is dealing with public trust. In short: 1. Money is not important. Public trust is important. Money is issued by the State using public trust. Public trust matters the most. 2. Value-for-money is important because value-for-money gives money its purchasing power. Without value, money is worthless. Again, worth is about public trust. 3. Money has to be traceable i.e. tracked by the public. Because using money as medium of payment basically means using public trust to pay for things and to buy things. Accountability and transparency matter the most. 4. The State has the power to issue any form of money. The latest iteration of money is digital currency in Euros. Currency is the metric of money. Digital currency in Euros is currency not printed in coins and not printed in banknotes. Not physical money. Conclusion: Money is not important but value-for-money i.e. value and public trust are important. 🙏🙏
Democracy is the greatest form of value-for-money creator and wealth creator. Economic democracy is what makes Germany rich. Economic democracy based on functioning market economy. It isn’t “new” though is it? I had a crew at Subway in the 90s which was my first job- I had always heard “the customer is always right” which I think was a hangover from the “it is ok to be a d-bag era before we were born” … they giggled and showed me in 10 seconds the customer is DEFINITELY not always right (though the person usually claiming so is not someone you really wanna spend time with) 🙂

yes money is SOMETHING but the SOONER in your life you realize money isn't EVERYTHING the sooner you will invest in activities and people that feed your heart and give you joy to be a human you only need SOME money, the mansion, the car, they are a lie, there is nothing in there but wasted time and spent money
The problem here is that poor people don't have the LUXURY to always invest in good things. It's WAY easier to say and do for richer people.
Selfishness work is a path to liberate
The title should be money can't buy happiness. And yes money should be affordable for everyone! I don't know why people associate money with something bad, money is good!
The ones saying that money isn't everything, already have everything. They say it to placate everyone else. when push comes to shove, when "the haves" have an emergency, they'll get airlifted to the nearest private hospital to get the best care. That's just one example.
I mean in this part of world everyone get lift by helicopter to hospital if its serious enought, in car accidents its almoast a standart
They say money isnt everythig, because they Just want to live happy lives, they dont Care About latest cars, private driveways etc.

'It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.
