This is a long time coming. My first true buyers guide based on some very popular micro prism's from Primary Arms. All of these are very good for what they are. The big question is, which one is best for you?

  • Doing CQB with 20” rifles with ACOGs on top really shows that an offset dot isn’t necessary. Very basic practice can get you proficient at CQB with magnified optics. Save the weight and just run it.

    • It really depends on your environment. I have seen first hand that a camouflaged target at 200 yards is nearly impossible to identify with a 3x. If you’re training for a home invasion, then a red dot or 1x is all you’d need. If you’re training for SHTF, you’d need more magnification than a 3x because your opponent will be as far away as possible with as much camo as he could possibly use.

  • These are great do it all general purpose optics, I own two, 1X and 3X and really love them. The 1X is just really underrated and is absolutely a red dot killer, especially if you have any sort of vision issues. I would argue that you don't really need an offset red dot with the 3X. If you don't want another expense, and more equipment hanging off of your rifle then you can easily train with the 3X to make close up shots. Marines did it with 4X for years. The more equipment and high tech you get, the more logistics and support required.

  • I can’t believe I just found your channel. I have a handful of gun tubers who I subscribe to regarding firearms and accessories reviews. Yours is probably one of the best regarding optics! I just bought the GLX 2x prism based on your evaluation and my needs. Two things I’ll add as my go to rifles all have ACOG’s in either TA33 (3x) or TA31 (4x). Target Identification - for sure with higher magnification, better target identification. I don’t compete but use my rifles as tools and I carry a 8x monocular or 10x compact binoculars with me. This does a much better job of target identification in real world situations. Close Quarters Work - with ACOG’s and keeping both eyes open you can be effective at very close distances. And, transitioning to primary and secondary sides is just as effective with prisms if you train to it. Excellent reviews and I look forward to your future stuff!

What really shines is the PA 1x ACSS optic paired with the PA 3x flip-to-side magnifier. If the magnifier is flipped out, I can shoot both eyes open and have a huge field of vision. Flipped in and BAMM, you have super clear longer range vision and a much larger field of vision.

    • 100%! Same story here. I really was thinking about the new 3x to save weight, but I've seen instances of breakage on the PA when torture testing. I think people should consider that as you may not necessarily go to war with your rifle, but you could easily drop it one day...stuff happens. That version of the 3x, the older one has been put through the ringer and survived everything from drops onto hard rock to being run over with a truck! Just a consideration as I really do like these new optics and love Primary Arms, but I also try to think worst case.

I generally love the RDS+magnifier set up, but AKs have inherant height-over-bore and cheek-weld issues when mounting optics. So a 3x prism sight that can be mounted low and have as good of an eye-box as the SLx 3x seems like the best match for an AK

  • Evolution Gun Works makes adapter plates for the Vortex Spitfires which can allow mounting any other micro red dot--important if you're doing it for nods since the Viper doesn't have a good NV setting. Also, Primary Arms' older SL 5x has a much better pic mount for piggyback red dots. Heavier prism, but durable and still less weight than an LPVO.

  • I have the 1x on one rifle, two slots back from the front of the receiver. No, I do not get the full FOV through it. It doesn't matter, because I have both eyes open. The eye relief, and eyebox are forgiving enough that my head would have to be ridiculously out of position to make it unusable. It is as fast as my RDS equipped rifles, but allows better precision out to 300 yds. The 2x, although not quite as good close in, is still very useable. That tiny bit of magnification, along with the long eye relief, and forgiving eyebox, makes it a favorite. I don't want the 3x or 5x, I want a Glx 4x. PA, are ya listening? Excellent video!

This guy is the best optics reviewer on the KZhead with that CA Super Set guy second but I think he started a new channel. I need to try one of these but the next cheap optic I get will probably be their 1-6 LPVO with their Nova reticle. I hear the illumination is great on those. I have a Sig MSR 1-8 and a Vortex Viper Pst 1-6. 8 need an ACOG and another LPVO. I would love a Razor or NightForce but they are expensive as you know.

  • Having tried a prism scope for the first time last weekend at IWA in Germany. Besides making it clear, that i do have some form of a slight stigmatism haha. They are a very nice design and a good option over a red dot, also with the edged reticle it saves on needing BUIS if you dont have a battery or the battery fails for some reason. And this video is superb in showing the difference between the variants. But even more so by showing the different distances you can actually place a prism. That is one thing i was looking for, because i would like to put a 1x prism on my AK. At the moment can only place it on the front handguard right behind the rear sight (in time will have a dust cover option). And was worried that it would be to far forward for the prism. But looking at it in the video that shouldnt be a major issue at all.

  • I'm glad you mentioned cross-eye dominance this is probably the only optics review video I've seen make mention of that. I'm right handed and left eye dominant, although I've been training to flip my eye dominance, I still struggle to shoot anything magnified with both eyes open which is why I love red dots, so I'm almost wondering if the 3x might be fine yet as a sort of do-anything general purpose optic setup on something like a 14.5 AR, I'd say a large majority of my shooting takes place well under 100 yards but there's times I'd like to get out to 200-300, with my aging eyes I've grown to like my 5x magnifier but it does have very limited eye relief and very limited field of view. I'm thinking the 3x might be the good compromise I'm looking for.

  • I have the 1x for my ar15 and I'm planning on putting the 3x magnifier with a flip mount. It's the best of both worlds as far as I'm concerned. You have the 1x used like a red dot for me up to 50yrd and then the flip which makes it 4x over 200yrds with the ranging features that also magnify. The 3x magnifier by pa is small and short as well and with the different mounting options it comes with I really don't think the 1x will be positioned to far forward at all. That's what I'm going with my personal preference and most likely I'll always have the magnifier on unless close up and personal which doesn't happen that often but it's there when needed.

For that reason I have an NV compatible red dot offset with the 3x as my primary. Works really well. I also have astigmatism. • Another great video on the subject, great job C_Does. One downside of prism that rarely is talked about is having cowittiness iron sights as a backup. I don’t know if it’s possible with 1x prisms, but it’s impossible with magnified ones. Even a LPVO at 1x can be used with irons, but let’s be honest: if your glass is cracked to the point you can’t use the reticle, the iron sights won’t help you much.

  • I run a PA SLx 1x and a Vector Optics Paragon 1x16 on different rifles. Both with the Holosun HM3X magnifier behind the prism. Both function perfect when one matches the diopers for their own vision. I don't understand why many claim that prism+magnifier can't be used together. Perhaps it is because they tried the PA 6x magnifier which makes the image a blurry mess..?

  • Lightweight point aim and shoot optic is ideal for coyote hunting. Love this micro prism concept. I’ve looked through a 3x but have not looked through the 5x. I’m imagining the 5x should be better for aiming but not ideal for field of view on acquiring running coyotes. Wonder how last minute light is with the 5x. Also really want the 5x FDE color released for hunting. My painting scope skill is not desirable

  • Based on your videos, I put a GLX 2x on a Rossi R-95 lever action rifle. I love the optic; however, the height over bore is too high for that rifle even with the lowest possible setup. The GLX will end up on an AR soon. I came back because I just picked up a PCC. You are very clear about which one to get! Thanks.

    • @@CDOES Well today was Christmas and my wife allowed me to open up my H&R XM177 and PA SLx 1X with carry handle mount. I absolutely love that optic. It’s like it was made for the carry handle. My eye just goes to it naturally. Glad I went 1X. The whole package is light and handy. I’m going to buy more of the SLx line. Thanks for your reviews.

  • Bought a 3x thanks to this video. I was torn between the 5x and the 3x (putting it on a lever action) but the large view sold me on the 3x. I wanted something simple, mechanically, and i figure fixed magnification is fine with a wide field of view.

  • Specialist setups vs General purpose is a good discussion to have. General purpose is set by the geographic regions one lives in. Flat land with dense vegetation doesn't offer many options for magnification, while mountainous terrain or clear fields like prairies are very good for magnification. Inside buildings vs between buildings is also a factor.

  • I have a 5x, and while eye relief is supposed to be the same, I have a much easier time getting behind the 3x quickly, 2x even more so. I really wanted the 5x to be my solution, but I feel like I have to hunt too much for a clean sight picture. I thought about their full size 5x, but for the weight, you can get an lpvo... I'll add another vote for a glx 4x.

  • I’m really hung up on lpvo vs 1x +3x flip to side magnifying. Won’t be magnifying often as its home will be on til of a 12.5” barreled ar. Have offset flip up backups (magpul pro offsets to the right of pic rail….wanting mag to flip to left of pic rail. Have an astigmatism….and am right handed with left eye dominance. Everything that can go against me aiming properly already has happened. We’ll see I guesss.
