They work on the dirt and eat on the dirt too, they never use a table to take their food. Thats crazy
I have watched this video with great pleasure because everything I have seen in it is very familiar to me, now I am 75 but in my youth, I worked in the car and truck workshop that my father had, and I have worked and seen work in conditions If not the same, very similar to those in the video and I can assure that experience and skills mean that working like this, an engine is repaired to perfect condition. I know that nowadays everything has become very "elegant", and full of standards of neatness, safety and lighting and beautiful working conditions. But there is a third world where with great heroism and a lot of intelligence, perfect hand work continues to be done, and those of my age we know that years ago it was also done here, and the engines started, the cars ran, the trains circulated, and the ships sailed, without so many rules and verifications. nor so many experts in white coats who dictate how everything should be done.
Hand work was why everything ran smoothly. You weren't waiting for the mechanic to fix your car, who's waiting on Snap-On to fix their scanner so they can actually fix the car, who's waiting on some company in China to make electronics parts for it. (Happening to a mechanic I know atm. Snap-on told him it could be up to a year before they can fix the scanner, but if he had more cash, they could sell him a brand new one right now.)
Great respect for your experience and your descriptions! In my 20s I also repaired truck, boat and car engines, mostly outdoors, and they all ran perfectly without any hyper-pure conditions. And these so-called “experts” are the thorn in the butt of the economy anyway... there seem to be more of them these days than productive people... I don't think it will work like this for much longer that the good people allow themselves to be regulated to the point of vomiting by such specialist idiots . Soon there will be a bang.
I also can relate to this way of working i too rebuilt engines in the UK like yourself and these guys back in the day.
The same for me, my father was born on a big farm, outside the town, No question to go to the autoparts every two hours. He repaired, and he made his own tools. I keep the habit to do my mechanic outside in the driveway with fresh air and sun. His memory want to 1920s engine, me I add knowledge on electronic fuel injection. At our days we state that nothing can be repair, in this video people state this opposite : everything can be repair. I would like that he could watch this video. My grandfather made his last saw mill at 85 years old, he used an old English car engine and covert with wood, it seemed to be a yard house. He also built a tractor just for his potato field with nothing.

Начал смотреть видео ну думал щас парни этот прожитый блок ,поддон раздолбай колено и распред восстановят но оказывается есть двигатели которые даже они не могут воскресить 😂

For those who wonder what engine is that? It's a Big Cam 3 Cummins made under license by Komatsu for use in their own equipment. I spent 31 years with Cummins starting in 1970 and to see these guys rebuild an engine under the conditions they have to work in and WITHOUT a torque wrench apparently, goes against ALL Cummins would approve of, but I'm sure it happened and happens quite often in remote and/or underdeveloped areas. Yes, I see the casting "CECO China", but remember this block is not the one that came out of the Komatsu dozer, and even so, Komatsu might have foundries in China.

Thank you for identifying that engine. Throughout that whole video I could not help but think that it was the 855 Cummins. I started down the path of diesel mechanic over 30 years ago but never stayed with it. My Snap-on payment left me with probably no more than those guys were getting paid and the last shop that I worked in degraded to conditions that where not much better, not what one would expect working in Dearborn Michigan. I do miss those Cummins engines; they were the best all around.
ive done a headgasket job on this in cab for a tractor definitely some hard work but I feel spoiled because I have pneumatic and power tools xD then again it was a solo mission for me

I think the use of proper torque wrench is the least of that engine rebuild problems. How many engines have you seen overhauled where they replace bearings and rings but not pistons and cylinder liners

I would like to express my admiration for the team of men working on this truck engine. Although there is no concrete floor you guys work like anything to rebuild this engine, and you keep all parts clean of dirt. Well done guys and a special praise for the young man who worked just as hard as the rest of the mechanics. Keep these coming.

I'm very impressed. No fancy tools or clean fancy workshop, no safety equipment (no safety boots or gloves or eye protection) but they got that engine going again which for many other parts of the world it would have ended up in a scrapyard, so yes well done, especially to that young lad - he will turn out to be a very skilled mechanic.

They didn't really get that engine going again, though. They assembled a different block with a different crankshaft. So, yeah, they scrapped the exploded block and crank like everyone else would have done.
I'm still waiting for the "Expert Mechanics" to show up. Love the safety sandals. No EPA problems with that dirt!
Right…. No need for cam or crankshaft thrust. Forget about the fuel timing. It’s what some loggers i worked for “We don’t have time do it right but we do have time to do it over “
I mean... at least do the old loosen the rockers and tighten em' back in till they go quiet, then back it off a quarter turn... trick. Or was it the other way around? 🤔... In any case, there is no need for feeler guages under those rockers, cause they came out that way. But then, I'm sure those lifters will beat themselves right into tolerance, just before the main bearings get spun. You know... it keeps the shop buisy, and it's always good to be needed.

It is interesting to watch you guys removing every part with simple tools and without gloves. Does the Snap-On Mitsubishi show up every week? Lol. Seriously though, these are some of the hardest working people I've ever seen. They work with close to nothing. Their most technological tool is probably a lathe in the shop and that's about it. I'm very impressed, although I'm sure the longetivity isn't crazy, but they get it done.

These guys continue to work with rudimentary equipment, which shows their persistence, and that's admirable in my personal opinion.

This reminds me strongly of the first time I rebuilt a car engine, on the floor of my parents' garage 🙂 Yup, you can get a decent job done even without half the tools that you 'ought' to have.
Funny bc my kid and I are always joking about this: we have all the tools, garage space avail but somehow, we always end up on the floor turning wrench lol
I've mended heavy gear this way for thirty years and Arthur Penrhos and Estyn saer maen didn't know any other way I've changed a front wheel drive Simca gearbox on the side of a french road I always got my family back home safe but couldn't protect them against cancer alas!
I give those guys a lot of credit for what they can accomplish with so little under crude condition and few tools. It's unfortunate they have to work under those condition, but they do, so try not to be SO critical of them.

Wel done with limited resources and the condition they have very happy to see them working instead of wasting time here and there and much much better than taking drugs. Love you guys especially the little master. 😊

At 21:00 the installer shows how smart he is - he puts the bolt up to the engine to make sure it is the right size (if it was too long it would bottom out or worse - too short & your bolts wouldn't line up). DAMN NICE!

lol you claim how smart they are but look at 26:50 the guy on the right is using force on a bolt that is not even half way in meaning he didn't screw it into the right thread and now is just fucking up the threads by forcing it in anyway. when he removes the tool you can even see how the bolt is leaning to the right a little.

This kind of works with old engines, but modern ones would desintegrate as fast as they would be rebuild this way. i have full respect for those people and the work they do with such limited resources. Very skilled. God bless

My thoughts exactly. I was wondering as they were working how many injuries there must be. Who knows? Maybe fewer than we might think.
@@Jim-sh1zs - Maybe. But the injuries they *do* receive are probably much worse than seen in the US. I saw a valve spring assembly fall on the child's foot during the tear down.
Notice that most are young most likely because they die young from accidents,, not so perfect unless your either Macomb or the owner who doesn't give a crap about anything but the bottom line. There's a reason why child labor was banned in the 60s here in the USA and now Republican lawmakers want it to return for nothing more than profit... Bottom line is bottom of the barrel

@@CK-mt7om - I notice that there always seems to be a young adolescent male working in these Pakistani mechanical repair videos. We can't ever really know if that boy is the son of one of the mechanics or perhaps the owner himself, a situation that is often acceptable in our country. The conditions under which those mechanics is certainly primitive and dangerous compared to the US. And it is those conditions that increase my concern for the presence of children working in that environment. It's easy to judge a country from afar but that video begs many questions and I can't really condemn without knowing the full story.

That is how a remote location field repair looks like, skills, will and knowledge pass into next generation, kudos!!!. I'm sure one of these mechanics two helpers and one learner, having a shop and parts on hand could complete this task with the engine tested and painted as per factory specs, in no more than three 10 hr days. The important step on jobs like this is to have the right parts, and plenty of rebuilds to stay busy. I used to work on both conditions field and shop, to keep the iron turning. To solve the parts sourcing we cut the equipment diversity and it's auxiliary accessories per application, to avoid catastrophic failures like this, and field work, you need to keep one eye on the equipment and take them out in due time by condition and hours.

Reminds me of when America was great, A young man was able to start his assigned career fresh out of kindergarten and not waste those 12-16 years of productivity with formal education. Back when a happy child, was an employed child.

This film, just blows my mind. It sets new standards for backyard mechanics. I can't believe what these people do with the barest of materials. Using a fan belt to help hoist up an engine, use helper rods to break open bolts. I'll bet some of our shade tree mechanics couldn't do better.

I don't think that engine's failure was caused by an overheating. I say it was caused by a broken connecting rod. Judging from the hole at the side of the block, and the hole on the oil pan. That engine is a FUBAR.

I work in a official caterpillar dealership with all tools and manuals and specifications to perform an perfect job but i reckon this guys literally make miracle

@@aceofspades856 i can bet you've never built anything ever especially an engine. I built my first engine when I was 15 and it ran for a week but I rebuilt it again with new parts and it lasted about a month. Fast forward 26 years to today and I build my own ls and big block chevys constantly making 1000 to1200 hp and running for years so take my word for it just because it starts and runs does not mean it will last a week,month or year dirt embeds itself in the cast iron and it will appear in places you dont want it to be like bearings. It doesn't take much to spin a bearings.

I admire the spotlessly clean working conditions and the high level of PPE with special note of the safety flip flops! Why do these guys do everything on the floor? Can't the make a stand or a bench?
I used to be a Volvo truck technician. The liner seats should be checked visually and liner heights with a DTI. If they’re not in the tolerance you’d then cut the seats and shim up, if it’s not done the engine may pressurise.
You work to what a book/screen tells you, they work from hands on experience (good and bad). If something works fine 100 times, it's probabaly fine, even if it goes against recommended practices.
@RustyShackleford66 not good enough. The surface between the liner and its seat has to be within specific tolerances. If they aren't done correctly, over time the liner can move creating serious issues. If there's any pitting on the seat, just rubbing with sandpaper or a wire wheel isn't good enough.
@@RustyShackleford66 It's called a liner protrusion test. If you're off by even 0.001 of an inch, your head gasket will blow prematurely as you cannot contain the combustion if the liner sits at the wrong height or sits crooked.
