  • 1:14 The hooks are actually used to grab the sandworm's scales, not its mouth. By pulling up a scale the rider exposes the vulnerable tissue underneath, making the worm turn itself to keep the exposed tissue free of the sand. By pulling up scales located in different areas, you can choose which way it leans and thus steer the worm.

    • This is one minor change Denis did from the book. In the movie, the rider need to jump on top of sandworm, therefore starting from the higher ground. In the book, the rider latch the scale from the side, and the worm will twist away pulling the rider toward the top.

    • It’s probably a hint that Paul’s visions can also turn out in a slightly different way than he sees. As with his visions in part one where he is fighting the holy war . The fight of his vision is mirrored in part two where it actually happens, but instead of Paul fighting it’s Shani. So much great stuff in these movies…

  • I think the idea is that pauls ability allows him to see multiple futures based on the choices he makes. The first scene with the flag is just a possible future in his visions and not a continuity error.

    @rohitsamuel1479@rohitsamuel1479Ай бұрын
    • This I agree with. I realise that the visions from the first movie were essentially a possible future but there have been changes made due to Paul’s actions. He has seen possible futures and he’s made the choice where he doesn’t exactly fail, thus changing certain aspects of the fights different. I mean, we shouldn’t forget it was Paul in the final battle vision during Dune 1 but we saw Chani in the final battle following the exact same camera framing in Dune 2 instead.

      @electromagnumsplaylab@electromagnumsplaylabАй бұрын
  • The flag isnt a continuity error, it's part of how Paul's vision works. In the same vision we see Jamis along with Paul and Chani in the ship, meaning Jamis survived and became Paul's follower in that vision. This means Paul see's different timelines and futures simultaneously (like he's stated multiple times already). So in that future the followers of Paul used a green flag, but in the timeline he chose, the followers used a white/brown flag with green croppings and the atreides symbol on top.

    @Despotic_Waffle@Despotic_WaffleАй бұрын
  • Paul isn't able to see the future, the spice allows him to see what will possibly happen because the capabilities of his mind are incredibly increased, so I wouldn't consider any difference a continuity error, I would say it was a slight miscalculation Paul did.

    • Yeah, they simplified that for the movie. Paul wasn't sure, going into the fight with Feyd-Rautha, that he'd win. Another thing they changed/left out was that some Bene Gesserit who drank the Water of Life *weren't* able to nullify the poison, and they died. The movie sort of takes it for granted that Jessica will life.

      @Karin_Allen@Karin_AllenАй бұрын
    • Ah.. this is a wonderful point... I actually love that approach so many times better then describing it as a seeing the future or having visions. He is a mentat with an incredibly good genetic heritage and in constant contact with spice while on Arrakis so his ability to analyse things is superhuman. This is so much better then presenting him as a seer.

  • The Maker hooks grab the seperate plates/scales of the worm not the mouth, as you see he pulls up the plate and the worm rotates so the exposed part is away from the irritating sand so the rider can get on top and use the hooks to direct them. Small nitpick but I love this part of the book and now the film. I loved the Fedaykin burning the Sardaukar/Harkonnen at the end, not bothered about their water just brutal revenge. Also in the book Chani's blue headband means shes a mother aswell. 3rd edit, Good catch with Pauls skin colour change after drinking the w.o.l.👌🏾 Long live the fighters ⚔✊🏽⚔

  • The black cape idea is exactly like Return of the Jedi. In ROTS, Luke wore black dress, which made everyone believe that he is going down a dark path. But at the end it was revealed that he is still good inside. With a white piece of clothing underneath the black dress. Same for Paul. He is transitioning to a cruel leader. The subtle change starts from now. The black clothing and I hope he will wear more black by the end of the 3rd movie.

    @mrinalsahanoyon3370@mrinalsahanoyon3370Ай бұрын
    • I don’t think it’s necessarily about him turning cruel-it’s more of a way for him to stand out amongst all of the muted sand colors. I think it’s kind of like a mantle he takes on as the Kwisatz Haderach. He is no longer just one of the fremen or like any other person. The costume change can also be said to reflect some growing darkness within him perhaps-I suppose it doesn’t need to have one meaning.

  • Also something I noticed on second watch: Stilgar pretends to be totally falling for the messiah stuff but he’s actually just as manipulative as Jessica. He basically forces Jessica to become a reverand mother to conform to the prophecy, threatening to kill her if she doesn’t. He confronts Paul when Paul denies his messianic status. He convinces other Fremen that even Paul denying he’s the Maddhi is proof that he is. He tries to find meaning in the the Mud’Hib name which Paul chose because of how harmless it is. And this is the best one: he tells everyone that Paul rode the biggest worm ever seen as was foretold, … but he also tells Paul that HE tuned the thumper himself. And exclaims “not THAT big” when the worm shows up. So he probably overtuned the thumper because he wanted to attract an unusually large worm so Paul would fit the prophecy, and just overshot it a bit and got an unsafely large one. I don’t know if Stilgar truly believed in the prophecy, but I definitely think he manipulated the situation to force the prophecy into coming true because he believed it would be best for his people.

  • I caught the black cape on the first watch and was instantly impressed at the production team’s inclusion of this detail. Paul is trying to find his way, he sees multiple paths, but he embraces all the different qualities he possesses: Atredies; Bene Gesserit; Fremen; muad’Dib; and now Harkonnen. Honestly, I think this series so far has encapsulated what I see as the human condition. I felt all the emotional swings throughout this movie and that is what I want: not just entertainment, but a movie that expresses the human experience. On a side note: some people don’t like this movie bc of the way it ended and I would have to disagree. This is party of the journey and yeah, it sucks, but so does life sometimes and it’s not a fluffy happy ending like most movies or stories. It reminds me of infinity war and how I felt afterwards, my emotions were all over the place, but it was good! Only had to wait a year for the resolution though…this next movie will probably be 2 years. 😅

  • My favorite "hidden detail" is the way they honor the book with the Baron's death even while altering it. In the book, it is Alia that kills the Baron with the "Atreides Gom Jabbar." Well, obviously in the film they couldn't use Alia since they compressed the timelines, but when Paul kills the Baron, he slowly slides his Crysknife into the Baron's neck, where Rev. Mother Mohaim held the Gom Jabbar to Paul's neck (and Lady Fenring to Feyd's in Part 2) while commenting that he "dies like an animal" again referencing the Gom Jabbar. Also, Paul taking Feyd's blade so that he can make the killing blow can be seen as Paul's willingness to sacrifice his own well being in pursuit of the greater good. It show's that Paul is willing to sacrifice himself upon the alters of history to provide a better future for humanity.

  • Awesome work. I could also add that indeed , his whole demeanor changes after drinking the water of life and unlocking all his potential, he's much more aggressive and resort much more to fear than respect in his interactions with others (when he addresses the whole Fremen army, and especially the skeptical man, which he lists all this thoughts in front of everyone, to instill fear as much as adoration ; the way he SILENCE'd the Mother reverent ; and the way he belittled the Emperor himself, dangling the threat of unveiling the Emperor treason of House Atreides to all the other great houses). You can tell he's already becoming a manipulative tyrant at that point.

  • I have a detail which I have been meaning to discuss. In the first movie, we keep seeing a certain vision where Chani is in a mud-like long gown, a few times it even indicated there’s blood on her hands. In the second movie, we see a few very similar visions but we come to realise it’s actually Lady Jessica in the same mud-like gown from the first movie, pushing Paul towards the Holy War which, I’m guessing we all know, will eventually end billions of life. What I believe is, Paul was seeing Chani in the visions during the first movie but slowly as his abilities were enhancing and he then even took the Water of Life, he saw the vision more accurately, that it was never Chani that encouraged him, but Lady Jessica-the blood on her hand probably indicates she instigated the massacre by planting the seeds for Paul to be Kwisatz Haderach and lead the Holy War, not Paul himself. Obviously we’ve seen Paul being consistently hesitant to go to the South because he knew South would mean the start of a path that’d end too many lives in the process. (Pardon any mid-explanations anywhere.)

I noticed this detail on my 4th rewatch of the movie and realized immediately that the following scene when he speaks to her about the visions becoming clear and that they're harkonens is all happening inside his and her minds. he couldn't wait until they're alone and have that exchange with her, he made it happen instantly by linking both their minds proof of that how the 2 reverent mothers had a telepathic conversation at the end of the movie, only difference is the 1st exchange was shown from the inside while the latter was shown from the outside.

This detail is impressive because the Sardaukar chosen to protect the Emperor not only have the highest loyalty to him, but are the most able warriors that their training can produce. In fact, later on in that same scene we're given an exact number of men that a *single* Fremen-specifically Paul's Fedaykin-can handle: between 20 and 30 of the Padishah Emperor's most elite Sardaukar.

I would refrain from asking him a direct correlation so he doesn't just agree with the fandom theories... as he probably knows his source material enough to sound more clever than he is! More hypothetical statements would be in your honor. Great compilation!

  • About Feyd's death, Paul made the same move as Feyd during his fight with the prisoner. This really shows that Paul can see the past of all men and women, as foretold in prophecy. Paul did see the past of Feyd. He saw his last fight with that prisoner.

  • 1:05 They do not attach the grapples to the worm's mouth. They attach it to the scales that cover the worm's breathing spiracles. Raising them up exposes the spiracles to irritating sand which causes the worm to not only avoid submerging, which would kill the rider, but also to raise the exposed scales a s high as possible, raising the rider above the sand wake. The director was careful to make sure that you can see the spiracles respiring under the raised scale.

  • Another interesting detail is the hooks actually pull up the scales of the sandworms, and it has small nostrils/holes. I think the hooks pulling the scales up is what keeps the sandworms from diving under the sand as well so they don't get sand in these holes.

    @jamesperez988@jamesperez988Ай бұрын
  • The grappling hooks don't go into the sandworm's mouth, they attach to a scale on the surface of the worm and lift it up. This causes sand to irritate the membrane underneath the scale (they added breathing holes in the film), making the worm stay above ground and rotate the opened scale as far from the sand as possible.

  • I think it's better to think Paul used Feyds move against him because he can read minds, so it's a subtle sign that even though feyd was a better fighter, this paranormal power Paul has carried him over and above feyd during the fight

  • 5:51 I don't think it is a continuity error since it isn't just the flag that is different but the amor they wear. It might be a case of a different time line is being played out or that being a future battle with better amor for the freemen.

    • The vision in Part 1 was I think alternate. Chani, Jamis, and Lanville(guy who fought Feyd-Rautha) were by Paul's side. Fedaykin were cheering in Caladan. In reality fremen flag has atreides symbol, but the color of the flag is red. Ateides uniforms were dark green. Jessica will I think forbid fedaykin to visit Caladan. Chani has left Paul( will return). Jamis and Lanville are dead. Paul has blue eyes though.

  • Hey I just wanted to point out how the movie explains how Jessica is Baaron’s daughter and Fade-Ratha as his nephew , and when Paul and Fade-Ratha fight , Paul calls him cousin even though he should be considered long uncle not cousin since Jessica and Fade-Ratha r cousins . Correct if I’m wrong .

    @adaminio-6695@adaminio-66959 күн бұрын
  • I think the thing with the flag is because it's been emphasized in the second movie that Paul will only be able to see the future with crystal clarity after he drinks the water, before that nothing is clear or what he thinks it is. Make sense the flag could be black before he drank the water. Also Chani is there in the first vision and leaves off as her not joining him after the water. As for burning the soldiers, could also be that Stilgar said their bodies are fully of chemicals, which makes the water dirty and only good for coolants and other machinery, not for terraforming the planet. Just my thoughts :)
